It seemed like a dude in a Dr Seuss hat doing Boy George while fronting a Stevie Wonder cover band.

Culture Club had some songs though, despite being at least fifteen years older cuts like "Time" and "Miss Me Blind" hold up today at a level that "Virtual Insanity" or "Cosmic Girl" don't.

I feel the same way about those hits as I do the Boy George hits. I will rock hard to cosmic girl and virtual insanity the same way or more so than Karma Karmelion and Time.

They had strong songs and a fairly unique voice/message for the time. Boy George has had his hand in interesting music for the whole of his career... his taste in electronica doesn't exactly match mine, but I more than give him his due.

Jamiroquai, however, is one of the most embarrassing examples of a trustafarian wanker getting famous for wearing a silly hat that looks like it came from a souvenir stall at a reggae outreach festival in Chichester and singing vacuous lyrics over cut-and-paste coffee-table grooves.

I fucking hated Jamiroqui when I was a kid.

This video of Jay Kay being headbutted is ALWAYS satisfying, mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRKc_AgAniI

Best thing he was ever involved in.

You don't hear that ill bass on the first two albums? Then someone will say oh he sounds like a fake ass Stevie Wonder then I reply... Okay I don't hear Stevie but if he does he that's a great choice for a person to bite off of. Bottom line is the band is nice and Jay does a decent enough job on the vocals. Culture Club is good but I only dig a hand full of songs.

But they were elevated to #1 single status. They're simply not good enough to be as famous as they are.

If a friend of mine was in the band, I'd congratulate him and say "Hey, you might even have a chance of making something out of this" - but enough to pimp around London in a McClaren F1? For cut-and-paste filler funk? In 1996?

Fuck off.

Don't fall for it.

Most people that were into Jamiroquai at the time over here had to admit it was at the very least a "guilty pleasure" - he was kind of a cross between Jools Holland, the "Jazz" bloke from The Fast Show and that guy who's always in the corner of a houseparty boring everyone about strains of dope. He was never really "cool", but he managed to project an image of an alternative mainstream or something... like you could claim to yourself you were being alternative by listening to a ginger bloke in a floppy hat faux-scatting through a 16 year old pothead's diary... but your friends would be laughing at you behind your back so you'd never actually mention it out loud.

I was pretty amazed when I realised ten years later that he'd managed to sell the same weak shit all round the world, espcially to countries that really should have known better.

No wonder he's got such a nice garage. He really does have a lovely garage. That always struck me as incongruous with his designer crusty image too. Dude looks like he should be chaining himself to trees to stop roads being built, but he spent most of the 90s and 00s hooning around London in a McLaren F1.

I've made myself all angry just by thinking about him.

except those awful floppy hats.

Jamiroquai stuff didn't really move me back when it was popular - not if i put any thought into the lyrics or the music. on a very superficial level some of it was good. and now when i hear it i like some snatches of some songs but overall i am bored by their stuff.

fuck you.

They were much more aligned to my existing musical tastes than Culture Club. I remember seeing Jamiroquai on either The Tube or Old Grey Whistle Test (I can't remember now which one) and feeling like they were a breath of fresh air, as there wasn't a lot moving me soundwise in the 90s.

Although Culture Club did have good songs, they just didn't do it musically for me.

Never came across as gimicky to me.
Sure the lead singer had questionable fashion sense, who cares.
Never mentioned in the pantheon of white soul but they are up there.
The first time I heard Return of the Space Cowboy was at this girl's dorm and I thought she was the coolest chick this side of venus.

Have nothing against Culture Club but I can count on one hand the songs I have heard that I liked.

Well it was just me, my older brother and, oddly, the biggest bully on our Bus who was at least 3 years older than my brother (and my brother is 4 years older than me).

Anyway we would congregate at the back of the bus and talk about how much we loved culture club. Of course we were mocked but having the biggest bully down with us kind of muted that.

So then we decided we were going to get t-shirt or something made. We ponyed up our money and gave it to the bully to get the t-shirts. He stole the money and that was the end of our Culture Club.

George being so flamboyant I'd say they had the bigger music impact

But they were more on the pop side of the aisle

I lean towards Jamiroquai because I personally prefer his catalogue over CC

Jamirquai's music was more soulful and plays well for a club setting

He's got a bunch of songs I dig...but these shits right here...

Culture Club had better pop songs tho... more impact as well but that was because there wasn't youtube, internet, 400 channels on TV, etc to compete with..

Edit: Internets wasn't around for Jamiroquai's first 2 or 3 albums...

damn I'm old.

Boy George's single produced by Teddy Riley. That was a nice little song.

I voted Culture Club but I can admit that my Jamiroquoi knowledge is severely limited. The little bit that I heard from them was cool though.

and yet another horrible comparison. these two bands have little to do with each other. a better comparison would be Brand New Heavies or maybe Incognito.

but jamiroquai all day, with or without jay kay's antics (although i've always had a soft spot for charming dickheads)

they still made some great tunes in later years
