Tycoon's ex rejects $975 million divorce check
By Katie Lobosco @KatieLobosco January 6, 2015: 7:59 PM ET
NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Not everyone gets to see a check for $975 million with their name on it. But after a highly contentious divorce, Sue Ann Arnall is looking for more.

She rejected the check her ex-husband Harold Hamm sent her Monday, according to his attorneys.

Hamm agreed to pay the nearly $1 billion back in November. He's somewhat of a legend in the oil business, having built Continental Resources (CLR) from the ground up and led the development of North Dakota's Bakken oil field.

But Arnall, an economist and a lawyer who held executive positions in the company, has said she is entitled to more. She filed for an appeal, claiming that the fortune was due to both her work and his.

Arnall's attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

To make things even messier, Hamm himself filed for an appeal as well. He claims that with the dramatic drop in oil prices, his company's value has taken a hit, along with his wealth.

Despite writing the check, Hamm will move forward with his appeal, his attorney Craig Box said.

I think she had been awarded 700 mil by the courts. Said she wanted a billion and the husband was like okay.... 975 mil. She's just wasting time and being bitter at this point. I can see why he said whatever take what you want and be gone. I'm sure he has business issues to attend to and she's got nothing better to do than go to court.

you notice some shit about ppl who have a ton of money? they all want a lot more.

i mean if he is worth $17B, i bet she can get more than $1B.

so the question isn't how she can leave $1B on the table by rejecting the check, but how she can leave xB (or xxB) on the table by accepting it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If he gave yall $975 million dollars, you wouldn't just take the money and run? That's more money you and your kids will ever need. Like why not just take the money and stop wasting a second of your life on this issue? This gives you the opportunity to start living the life you want right now.

I see the other argument but still . . . that's $975 million though. Like how do you say no to that?

the court will give her more thats why, what she needs versus what she deserves is two different things, nobody needs that much money that doesnt mean she shouldnt get it.

shame on him for trying to play her, she isnt the bad guy here.

So, essentially, she would have netted a settlement in excess of $1b.

Angry divorcée refuses $974M check from billionaire oil tycoon

Published January 07, 2015
New York Post

Now that’s rich!

A jaw-dropping photo reveals the handwritten $974.8 million divorce settlement check rejected as too skimpy by the ex-wife of a billionaire oil tycoon.

Sue Ann Arnall, 56, scoffed at the jackpot-size payout from former hubby Harold Hamm — CEO of the energy company Continental Resources — demanding more money because he was allowed to keep the bulk of his $13.5 billion fortune.

The check, penned in bubbly handwriting, was made out for a mind-numbing $974,790,317.77 on Monday. The couple was married for 26 years.

An angry divorcée refused this check for $974 million http://t.co/5So472Sa5K pic.twitter.com/daCvYj6NUY
— New York Post (@nypost) January 7, 2015

The sky-high sum was delivered to Arnall’s legal team on Tuesday, but was promptly turned away, according to Hamm’s lawyer, Michael Burrage.

“Ms. Arnall, through her counsel, stated that they were rejecting the . . . payment because Ms. Arnall did not want to risk the dismissal of her appeal by acceptance of the benefits,” Burrage said in a statement on Tuesday.

Arnall plans to appeal a November divorce court ruling that granted her $995 million, along with other assets worth tens of millions more, such as a California ranch and an Oklahoma home, her legal team said at the time.

Take the 975 mill and keep it moving.

Anything can happen if she continues to pursue this matter.
