"So I didn't get the job because of my hair... Lol "

Sigh, like I'm just really disappointed. I interviewed with a company about a month and a half ago. A friend of mine had actually told me to contact her friend because they needed to fill a manager's position at her company.

I interviewed with that friend and it went extremely well. I wound up interviewing three more times at their head quarters with the Vice President, and president of the company. Every interview had gone better than the previous. Everyone loved me! The president of the company had even asked and wrote down my salary requirements.

They said they'd contact me within the week. Never heard from anyone, and no one responded to my e-mails.

Now fast forward to yesterday. I finally hear from my friend who referred me. Well turns out there was quite a fuss up there about me. Now this is just what I was told but I totally believe it. She says that when her friend had asked what happened with hiring me, they told her that I had dreads and that did not fit with the company's image or dress code policy. She says she took the matter up with HR. Who knows?
I believe this only because the second time I was called to come to their corporate office, the lady literally asked me two questions, and asked me did I have any questions for her. I said to myself then, that bitch just wanted to see me because there was no other reason to have me come up there!!

My hair the exact day of my second interview http://i62.tinypic.com/2hy8o4o.jpg . I was very polished and poised.
I'm still interviewing and I have recently taken my braids out. I guess I'll wait before putting some back in. It is what it is but it still sucks to hear that. All because of my hair?
I was more than qualified for the position and got a long well with everyone. Left every interview laughing and smiling. Now I'm wondering if that could've been the reason I didn't get another job in which I applied to but met the same fate with. Multiple interviews, everyone loved me but again I never heard anything back?

It's a dirty game. Any other women go through this? What's funny is my friend who referred me actually suggested I get my hair braided or wear a wig to the interview because at the time I was rocking my fro... The irony. Should've gone with the wig!

Somebody's lying...

i was told by my old boss (who had short sister locs) to bun my hair up. and that's what i did and that's what I do now. put it in a tight bun. I'm so shocked this is still happening in NYC. its' so eclectic and full of diversity here...my hair currently is in the same style as in your pic and my boss (white male obgyn) loves it...the only ppl who ever said anything to me about my hair being unprofessional has, ironically, been black women.

It could be the hair, but no matter what, it's related to being Black.

I've gone on many an interview where phone screenings went excellent, even the group phone interview. I've been told many times I was the candidate they wanted and were ready to hire but just wanted to meet face-to-face as a formality. When we meet, shit changes. The atmosphere is a bit tense, I can sense something is amiss from the time they get off the elevator and shake my hand to the time I leave. I even had one that came out into the lobby looking for me, where I was the only person in the lobby, and had them walk past me several times before finally asking me if I was who the were looking for... Needless to say I didn't get that job; they decided to search for other candidates despite the fact that I was hand picked by the manager, interviewed well on the phone, and scored the highest on the skills assessment test they had the recruiter give everyone.

Like you, I've had interviews where I was supposed to be the best candidate and interviewed face to face with everyone from the manager I would be reporting to all the way up to the president, and in one case the CEO. Everyone assured me I would get the job but somehow it never happened.

The only reason for any of this would be the color of my skin.

I was talking to my brother and his friend talking about corporate america and I didn't have the heart to tell one of the young brothers that his dreads and beard my be a hindrance in getting a job at an accounting firm. He had just finished telling us how long it took him to grow his hair to a length where they started to look good.

Damn maybe I need to have that convo with him.

She's trying to climb the corporate ladder with her company but it's not going like it should. I think some of everyone has told her she needs to lose the dreads. I understand that she's reluctant to do that 'cause she's been growing them since the late 90's, but this is a white man's country and they ain't too keen on having so much blackness on display the higher you go.

One of my boys back in the late 90's had to chop his off in order to rise through the ranks at the company we both worked at.

Shit... even I cut my hair for the same reason. It took forever for my hair to grow down just past my ears, but when I saw it was going to be a liability, I cut it.

now i am SO SORRY that this happened to you

i have blond locs
but when I interview they go in a bun
and I wear just studs
and maybe a pearl necklace

it is a dirty game
however when you are in upper management,
we sometimes have to play the role
just to get in the door

it's their loss though
dont be discouraged
but next time,
definitely wear a bun

We could argue whether the employer morally right or wrong but we know that employers sometimes based hiring decisions on less. I wouldn't wear a brown suit to an interview. A person can get a job because they are a jets fan as oppose to a eagles fan.

Most of that is in the legal rights of companies unless they discriminate based on a protected class.

But I don't get too philosophical about it. It ain't that deep to me because it's only hair and the question comes down to do you value your hair more than the job?

You gotta play the game. Normally, my hair is in a crown twist because I'm lazy and hate straightening it.

But I always wear my hair straight for interviews (I wear my hair straight on a semi-regular basis, so it's not a big deal to me).

Black women having to straighten their hair or wear a wig for interviews is just like black men having to shave for interviews. Shit is wack, but we all know who cuts the checks. Wigs can come off and beards can grow back.

After I get through orientation though, the makeup comes off and the hair goes back to its normal state.

And I don't think its you.

Very weird that you friend's friend would tell your friend that because if it came back to her that could potentially put her job in jeopardy, if it were true.

Sounds like she just made up some BS knowing you wouldnt challenge it becssue how could you if you aren't a part of the company (I mean you could sue but you won't).

Anyways these folks saying "you dont need to work there" I mean true and all but sometimes you have to play the game to change the game.

In fact, from what I've read and heard (on NPR), there's quite a bit of resentment towards Africans that are in France, many illegally (like Mexicans here in the States).

>I never been to France so I have no idea

france isn't some place that is clamoring for tourism $ so they choose to be obsequious to priveleged foreigners.

if anything they had a bad rep at one point for being extremely rude to non french speaking foreigners. to the point the first time i went there on a day trip, i literally spoke to NO ONE. nyc subways are way harder to navigate than the metro so i had my map and didn't ask for directions.

subsequent times i've been i had a great time and talked to people and had fun.

they were nice to me in the street and off.

again, africans do not have it easy but i can't say i know an american who has been out there and been treated as badly.

and i don't know any whites or blacks who work for a french firm presently. i knew one girl who did but she was african so *shrug*

They're not "corporate" friendly. But that really sucks, it's like you have to wait until you actually get the job to start doing rocking the " non traditional " hair styles.

You should report it. Burn them. If true, this is flat out discrimination.

https://www.change.org/p/the-thurgood-marshall-college-fund-end-the-dreadlocks-discriminatory-policy-of-the-thurgood-marshall-college-fund

As an MBA student at the University of the District of Columbia, I have maximized every opportunity to advance my academic and professional career by remaining active in almost every facet of the campus experience. I currently serve as the President of the Graduate Student Government Association and participate in several judicial committees governing the University. As a student leader, I strive to represent the voices of all students to affect positive change in the University. At this point, however, I must represent myself, and possibly hundreds of other Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCUs) students across the United States who have been unfairly discriminated against.

On October 7th, I was accepted to attend the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) – Leadership Institute. The conference, comprised of approximately 500 of the brightest students from the 47 HBCUs, is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. November 9-13, 2014. The goal of this conference is to provide students with leadership training and job and internship opportunities with many of the nations Fortune 500 companies. Based on my academic, extracurricular activities, leadership roles and strong professional decorum, I was deemed qualified to attend the conference. After my acceptance, I was then informed that I had been disqualified based on my physical appearance. I was informed that The Thurgood Marshall College Fund has instituted a ban of “Dreadlocks” for male participants of the conference. Thus, my invitation to attend the conference would be contingent upon the removal of my hair. Given that I wear my hair in the same manner as my father - serving as a representation of my cultural identity, heritage, and spirit, I feel it is highly discriminatory and sexist to make such a ruling.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund is a non-profit, whose primary goal is to serve as a voice that advocates for students that attend the 47 public HBCUs. It troubles me greatly that TMCF would make this decision without engaging the external stakeholders and 47 member schools. The organization desperately needs this input in order to better understand the ramification of such an antiquated ideology. Furthermore, TMCF is not honoring the legacy of the late Justice Thurgood Marshall who stood for equality and educational advocacy. TMCF holds a prime position to challenge the narrative that students of color with a strong cultural identity are ill suited for employment. In essence, TMCF is perpetuating a woefully narrow image of black male leaders.

Please join me in asking the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to end this discriminatory practice and realign itself with its core mission of supporting and empowering the students that attend the public HBCUs across the United States by signing the petition below. Together we can end this form of discrimination.

it was a contract job. i interviewed with my hair flair ironed. i came with havana twists on the first day and they told me not to come back. second day I was there!

i knew people that worked there, and asked WTF the deal was and what I could have possibly done wrong. The word going around was that my boss let me go because of my appearance

My boss told the agency "her persona was not the same as when she interviewed"
