"when 2 inches of snow wreaks havoc on your city..."

so i'm in Baltimore and i'm disappointed in how we handling this little bit of snow. depending on where you are, you could have gotten as little as an inch and as much as maybe 4.

schools are shut down, jobs are giving people late openings and allowing liberal leave, and fools on the road are playing bumper cars. you got clowns driving 5 or 10 miles above the speed limit like aint nothin goin on. then on the opposite end of the extreme, you got fools driving only 5 or 10 miles an hour.

i thought we were better than that. i joked my friends in southern states for buggin out over a little snow and now we doin the same.

what's it like when it snows where you at?

We have two cars, a Hyundai Sonata and a Subaru Forester. My wife took the Forester to work at 7am, so I had to take my daughter to school, up a hill like that in the fucking Hyundai.

Long before we moved here. I bike or bus to work, so it's only ever used when I have to take my daughter to school and my wife has already left. I can't imagine buying a non 4WD/AWD vehicle in this town, though.

I have never driven in snow before and I would mash on the brakes just because of instinct. But is there anything you can do to stop the slide? Or do you just try and glide the car through it?

they're sliding backwards, due to the hill.

Brakes aren't going to do anything good, and maybe make the slide worse.

Your only chance there is to downshift and gas, but you're probably just fucked.

i still blame hip-hop.

Although, they'd get ice more than snow. Either way, it would cause a full city shutdown. It always amazed me how ill prepared the metroplex was, considering for the last few years there's been a snow/ice event every year.

it's always the same thing - ppl claim their gov't doesn't prepare for ice/snow b/c 'it doesn't snow here'. but then the ppl at issue have a recent story about 'the last time it snowed' - which says to me that it DOES snow there. and in many cases it snows 'there' if not every year then every other year. IMO a city should be prepared to handle ice/snow if it occurs annually or even bi-annually. the cost of ice/snow removal prep must be less than the cost of shutting down the metro area due to ice/snow. but maybe it's not - i'm not an expert and i'm only guessing based on layperson experience/knowledge.

'ice belt cities' like Dallas, **DC**, Atlanta, et al.

fuck you.

but you'd be wrong.

This city is especially a mess when we get a snowstorm because it's generally so sunny that our snow removal budget is absolute bullshit, because the plan is basically "meh, it'll be sunny tomorrow and that'll take care of it."

i still blame hip-hop.

I'm in ATL, so you know how that goes - they tried throwing last years shutdowns in the Governor's face in the November election (nice try but didn't work)

After living in Chicago and Columbus it's a joke but they aren't prepared down here (rightfully so since they rarely see it).

everything is mostly FLAT. If you're on a flat road and start sliding, you're not really gonna slide *that* far cuz there's still some friction at work that will slow/stop you. If you start sliding on a hill, you are straight fucked. Also, most roads in the city are straight, which also helps a lot.

snow removal is pretty reliable in the city b/c mayors fear the alleged Bilandic curse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Blizzard_of_1979

"The city's inadequate response to the blizzard was blamed primarily on mayor Michael Bilandic, who had assumed the post after the 1976 death of Richard J. Daley. Newspaper articles at the time blasted Bilandic; Jane Byrne, Bilandic's main political rival in the Democratic primary (who had previously worked with Bilandic in the Daley administration and been fired by Bilandic when the two could not get along), capitalized on this and went on to defeat Bilandic in the February 27 primary."

^ it's about that. i say that b/c snow removal isn't as reliably awesome outside the city. some of the burbs are tricky.

but that's no excuse.

*points to Denver*

i know the Colorado snow removal situation is a bit different b/c the snow there tends to melt fast plus life is slower and ppl don't have the same go-Go-GO! expectation that folks out east tend to have. but still...snow can be removed from hilly terrain.

again - the federal government has put men on the moon. they have sent roving vehicles to other planets and shit. it can remove snow from city streets in the seat of its governance.

fuck you.

where EVERYTHING goes nuts with three snowflakes.

I will never forget as long as I live. I went to DC via train to visit my dad in Northern Va. there was about 2-3 inches of snow. My dad said there would be abandoned cars on the roads, and I laughed at him. Sure enough, 28 cars abandoned on the side of the road - including one in the MIDDLE of the Cabin John bridge. It took 3 hours to make a 20 mile trip. LOL...SMH

It was also cold as hell last night so basically the little bit of snow that did fall, STUCK, and made it hard to drive.

I was on the road at 530 and I could barely see the lines on the highway and nearly spun out at a traffic circle on a side road.

DC's snow removal preparation is flat-out ridiculous.

it snows in DC - there's no reason to shut that city down over a few inches of snow. especially considering it's the seat of one of the most powerful governments in the world. that gov't has sent ppl to the moon but can't remove a few inches of snow from its streets and sidewalks so life can continue like normal?

it's stupid as shit. there is no excuse for it.

fuck you.

i think the DC metro governments don't do more about snow removal b/c the ppl don't demand it. they don't demand it b/c they LIKE the snow days. they like sitting/working at home when there's 2 inches of snow outside.

otherwise i don't get it.

the local governments there should prepare to handle the snow so it doesn't shut down the business of the metro area considering it snows there at least once per year.

to wit: WMATA has snow routes for its buses (http://www.wmata.com/getting_around/snow_bus_routes.cfm). that's acknowledgement that snow is a regular thing in DC. if the folks who run WMATA know this why don't the various departments that handle the streets know it? if they know why don't they do more about it?

fuck you.

The city population grows by 80% every day, more than any other American city. Federal government offices close in DC because alot of workers are come into DC from all over Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and even West Virginia and the snow removal in all of those areas is variable.

Plus winter temperatures in this area are often right at the line between snow and rain so every storm is a crapshoot as to what kind of preparation is really necessary.

Teleworking is becoming alot more common so the offices closing really isn't as big a deal as it once was.

Chicago's metro area is at least 2x the size of DC's in terms of population and land area and also includes 3 states. but the city doesn't shut down over 2 inches of snow. ppl from the outlying areas can get in and out - movement may slow down a bit but it doesn't stop b/c of a few inches of snow.

indeed, we received 3 inches of snow last night. i work in the suburbs and was able to get to work on a train w/o issue. and the air temp was like 5 degrees too, btw. my coworkers who drove said traffic was slow and most of them were a little late getting in. but they all got here. jurors have arrived for trials today - a little late but they're here. life is going on despite 3 inches of snow and single-digit temps.

>Plus winter temperatures in this area are often right at the
>line between snow and rain so every storm is a crapshoot as to
>what kind of preparation is really necessary.

meteorology is a thing. there are scientists who can reliably predict the weather and whether there'll be ice or snow w/in 24 to 48 hrs of the event. it doesn't take much more time than that to get prepared. and in both cases the prep is basically the same - rock salt or other ice melting substance on roadways. snow plows on roads. it's not difficult - it just takes the will to do it.

>Teleworking is becoming alot more common so the offices
>closing really isn't as big a deal as it once was.

if that were the case then we wouldn't have any offices at all and everyone would work from home all the time.

there is no good reason to shut down that metro area once or 2x every year due to a perfectly predictable and manageable weather event. it's dumb as hell.

fuck you.

add lower speeds due to precipitation and lil accidents and you could increase that commute by a multiple
not worth it
the problems in dc/atlanta are more about shitty infrastructure (beltways) than it is preparation

DC and other cities further south just have a higher proportion of people that can't drive in snow and ice. They don't do it often so they don't know how or just don't bother to adjust their driving to the conditions.

I'm sure people that can drive in northern cities in the winter can navigate southern cities in the winter... and southern drivers tend to struggle up north.

In response to Reply # 36

Like you said in another post, DC usually gets maybe 1 or 2 snow events a year... and that can vary from negligible some years to blizzards other years (seems like every 7 to me).

The local goverments are just not going to budget the same amount for snow removal as Chicago or other nothern cities which get snow more consistently and frequently.

Still, the local governments are prepared for SOME snow, just not alot. And they prepared appropriately for this storm though it did intensify inside of the 24-48 hour window you mentioned (totals got upgraded overnight, just before it hit and as some of the extreme commuters hit the road).

Unfortunately that doesn't protect you from the PEOPLE here who just aren't prepared for snow so that influences alot of the decisions. We drive in snow and ice 2-5 times a year and alot of people just don't know what they're doing out on the roads. I slowed down a little this morning but I saw some people going 5 mph on the highway, others going 80.

So when you hear that the federal government is closed, it's rarely because the roads in DC itself are impassable (DC local government and schools actually rarely close) ... it's because most of the workers who are coming from all over would be less of a danger to themselves or others if they just stayed home.

In regards to telework: it's nice but it's not consistently available to all workers and is explicitly forbidden for many others that deal with classified information.

This blog charts the number of times the Federal government has closed in the last 10 years and the amount of snow fall received at one weather station in city limits.

http://dcist.com/2014/03/chart_how_often_the_federal_governm.php

The 2012-13 season appears to be the one year where the perception might fit but the snow total is only for DC proper. It tends to be lower in DC than the burbs (heat island blah blah blah)

>note: '2 inches' was an exaggeration. the point is i've heard
>of DC shutting down over relatively small amounts of snow on a
>seemingly regular basis.

The whole perception is an exagerration. THe Federal government has closed 11days due to snow in the last 10 years and 10 of those days happened in years we get 30 and 55 inches of snow, respectively. That much snow may not seem like a lot but we average 10-12 so that's extreme and unlikely for us.

I think any metro area would shut down when they get 3-5 times what they're used to getting and prepared to handle.

all of these days w/'unscheduled leave' due to snow - that's what i'm talking about.

so i misspoke when i characterized the city as 'shutting down' b/c that has a specific meaning there.

the bullshit i'm talking about are these days where there's not a total shut down but limited operations. it seems to happen at least once per year due to relatively low amounts of snow. that's too often, IMO. like this:

http://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/snow-dismissal-procedures/status-archives/05/12/9/Delayed-ArrivalUnscheduled-Leave_125/

Snow & Dismissal Procedures Archived Status
Federal Government Archived Operating Status in the Washington, DC, Area

the following message applies only to Friday, December 9, 2005

Status - Delayed Arrival
Status - Unscheduled Leave Federal agencies in the Washington, DC, area are OPEN under a DELAYED ARRIVAL/UNSCHEDULED LEAVE policy. Employees should plan to arrive for work no more than 2 hours later than they would normally arrive, and employees who cannot report for work may take unscheduled leave.
This Means . . .

Employees should plan their commutes so that they arrive for work no more than later than they would normally arrive. Employees who arrive for work more than {hours} later than their normal arrival time will be charged annual leave or leave without pay for the additional period of absence from work.
Employees who cannot report for work may request unscheduled leave for their entire scheduled workday.
Telework employees are expected to report for work on time.
Emergency employees are expected to report for work on time.

1. weather predictions. You either buy in or not. this leads to the city...

2. under preparing or over preparing. they also think about the overall snow budget for the year. In most cases if they get into the the predictions and they prepare, they often are over prepared. When they don't take heed, that's when we get slammed. There was snow prep by the city yesterday FYI. They did all that shit this morning. So did the S.H.A. Thus the traffic was fucked up this morning. Nothing had a chance to work yet.

Very few of the roads were treated with anything, so when the snow did set up it was a mess. First time in a very long time I saw the traffic map in DC practically all red everywhere.

Add to the fact that in the DC area we have a good number of transplanted people from different areas that never drive in the snow, which absolutely does not help. They freak out at the first tire slip and start overcompensating by driving 4 mph everywhere

windchills have to be -40 to guarantee a school shut down. Not lying. They might close at -30, might not.

Snow... we'd need a lot. The official line for schools is more than 6 inches in 12 hours. But any who lives here knows that's not enough to shut down anything. Realistically 12 inches in 12 hours, probably would not do it. We'd have delays and shitty freeways but... life goes on around here.

just this morning on my way to work I was thinking about where I could move to.

Other than Chicago (which is only a little better), I don't know where else I would really wanna live.
Mom lives in Dallas, but I hate it there.
The rest of my fam lives here.
I have lots of relationships here that are incredibly important to me.
If not for that, I'd be out.

I'm not so good with strangers.

I'm sooo glad I don't have to do 695 to work anymore since I moved to AA County.

The snow wasn't even that bad. People gotta learn to not drive like assholes and the scared folks need to learn to keep a certain without freaking out and slamming on breaks every couple of seconds.

but when I lived in PA it was business as usual.

The biggest problem is the "expert" snow drivers.. they always get in wrecks and ruin it for everyone else. I have no problem with people who drive slow as shit in snow.

It's SNOW.. respect it.

being let out of work early would be cool and all but all the traffic from people who aren't used to the weather would kill me. if i moved to a warmer climate it'd have to be somewhere where it doesn't snow at all...ever.

My normal 15 minute drive turned into 45 minute one this morning. As a contractor though, I don't get paid if i don't come to work. So, I jumped in the Xdrive and hauled my ass in.

I did laugh when my daughter sent that good text saying that Baltimore County schools were on a two hour delay. About 10 minutes later, it was a follow-up to say that the County was shutting it down for the day.

I haven't seen snowfall since GWB's first term in office. It snows out here in the high country, but not many places other than that.
