even if you didn't always like his style, he was an original with it and always seemed to enjoy what he was doing.

taking me back to like middle school seeing him on sportscenter in the morning

he was an original, the rest of 'em are copies.

He was an absolute professional, so well-respected and so hard-working. Four surgeries in seven days leading up to his ESPYs speech last year. Went on the air while undergoing chemo. Got himself in great shape during each remission. It's kind of inspiring and deflating at the same time, because after all that he is still gone at 49. But the 'isms will live on. I always thought one of his best calls was Vladi Dadi, who likes to party? He put so much hip hop into the previously lilly white, arena rock reference-laden Sportscenter.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

There's so many broadcasters who can be over the top at times with their catch phrases and all that. I think Stu just rubbed some people the wrong way cause he was the first to bring the "hip-hop" (for lack of a better term, and because it seems to be the way everyone describes him) style to ESPN and to sports broadcasting. And he did a fucking wonderful job of it.

Berman comes to mind as someone who is WAY over the top with his catch phrases and things like that, who I find to be way more blatant about it than Stu was. Berman has been great for a long time but I feel like he's a caricature now who lacks the substance he used to bring. Madden also got to that point eventually. Stu never lost the substance, which is why I always found him so enjoyable and genuine.

he gave us a voice and a entryway

but i dont like how he brought a lot of the coonery that came with it as well

he now has a buncha white sportscasters habitually line steppin with their slang
seems like too many of them try to put some "stank" on their delivery and the shit is just awful
it's like a mockery really.

i hate when they try to blend a current day rap lyric into Baseball Tonight highlights
they dont even do it right

now they have a complete show called "Where You At?"
seriously?
that bad ass fucked up ass english that came from only one demographic
that is AAVE all the way

Berman's catchphrases weren't so "ethnic"
he'd say shit like RumblinBumblinStumblin

but again, Stu was a beast for all the doors he opened for people of color at ESPN

and no shade, but I recall some dude on BET back in the day that used to do a hiphop orientated sports segment
but he would lay his shit over Mob Deep beats tho
LOL
giving Havoc much shine

it's nothing people didn't say (frequently) when he was alive.

Personally I didn't worry too much about it. He was doing his thing. Almost anything that is influential is going to have its proponents and detractors, and usually justly so.

a bad thing. It's my strong belief that it is necessary in the ongoing process of mending race relations in this country. The more afraid blacks or whites are of saying things that are considered exclusively a part of the other's culture, the longer the divide remains. It's the problem with stereotypes.

Now if you truly feel like some people are "mocking" it then I kinda get what you're saying, but still, I think we all need to be less afraid of blending the cultures if we ever want to truly get to a point where race relations are completely cordial in America. And I think sports is a great platform for all that.

Anyway this is a huge tangent but I just needed to air that out.

not so "intelligent"
yes they are cultural
but they are mindless and can be detrimental to the group as a whole
Tip Drill, Wacka Flocka, etc are "cultural" but they are also not very "educational" and can easily be detrimental to Blacks as a whole

now when a predominately white run TV program starts using AAVE like "where you is?" and "i bees over here my main man now give me some skin"
i just find that a mockery in 2015

and i'm all for meshing of the cultures
i got a story about a Black guy, a Korean and a Jew in Italy comparing and contrasting the JD's (J Dilla vs Jermaine Dupree) if you want to here it.

Much respect to Stu Scott who even has given us this medium to talk about such subjects

I was missing your point that you weren't happy about the "less intelligent" cultural things that were being spread, and thought you were just bothered that white people were integrating what is generally considered black culture into their lexicon.

But now that I understand, I can say I am in total agreement with what you're saying.

Man was the true meaning of fighter. Respected the love he openly displayed for his two daughters. May he rest easy.

I've cried several times today. This just hurt my heart. He was a staple in my home and he will truly be missed. I truly loved this man.

I said most of how I feel in post 29 but man - he will be missed and he was such a game changer for ESPN/sports broadcasting at large. Sad for his family. I was tearing up during the ESPN tribute to him this morning, the part about his daughters had me on edge like a motherfucker. I'm sure there will be way more tribute coverage to come, and there should be.

Goodwill is the monarch of this house, men
Unacquainted, enter, shake hands, exchange
Greetings and depart friends. Cordiality exist
Among all who abide within. I am the eminent
Expression of friendship. Character and
Temperament change under my dominant power.
Lives once touched by me become tuned and are
Thereafter amiable, kindly, fraternal.

I inspire the musician to play noble sentiments and
Assist the chemist to convert ungenerous
Personalities into individuals of great worth.
I destroy ignoble impulses. I constantly invoke
Principles which make for common brotherhood
And the echo resounds in all communities and
Princely men are thereby recognized. Education,
Health, music, encouragement, sympathy, laughter,
All these are species of interest given of self
Invested capital.

Tired moments find me a delightful treat, hours of
Sorrow, a shrine of understanding, at all times I am
Faithful to the creed of companionship, to a few,
I Am the castle of dreams, ambitious, successful,
Hopeful dreams. To many, I am the poetic place
Where human feeling is rhymed to celestial
Motives; to the great majority, I am the treasury of
Good fellowship.

In fact, I am the college of friendship; the
University of brotherly love; the school for the
Better making of men.

I AM ALPHA PHI ALPHA!!!

have been his future uncle-in-law. he challenged my son to a fight, and i joked that i'd have to kick his ass.

really really cool guy who cared deeply about his family and always had a kind word to say.

he was, of course, a pioneer, ushering in the new school of television sports journalism, as well as integrating the sensibilities of sportscasters. but he was way more than that, also.

rest in peace. and my prayers go out to his daughters and the rest of his family.

peace & blessings,

x.

Whole thing is great but the one line at the :36 second mark got me fucking good. Saw a clip during the ESPN tribute this morning of these two in the mid 90s when they both started that was pretty cool.

Lots of moments of silence and it's wild the breadth of people who have come forward with fond memories of him.
