"Top 5: Producers Edition"

Rappers wouldn't be anything without production.
Many times, production actually MAKES the rapper.
Got me to thinking who would be the Top 5 producers in hip hop.

I'd go with:

(in no particular order)

Primo
Battlecat
Daz
Dre
Quik

I can easily name 15 more that could easily take the spot of one of these five.
Shit,
Kanye
Timbaland
Dilla
Missy
Large P
Rza
Diamond D
Prince Paul
Neptunes/Pharell

In no particular order of course!

BTW: Jermaine Dupri is hugely underrated! Niggas think it was Diddy, but I think JD ruled the Shiny Suit Era of Hip Hop.

And at least 3-4 of those spots are interchangeable...RZA, Q-Tip, Quik, Pete Rock, Marley Marl.

I personally just enjoy those fives beats more than Pete Rock...and I even prefer Larry over Marley, by a small small amount. That Whodini and DMC work was just....man.

I enjoy Dilla's overall sound more than Pete and even more than Premo's, but mainly the Jay Dee era...just that Soul-Funk feel and swing to it was sick.

Quik is a much better musician than Dre, but Dre is a way way better producer. And even with ghost producers...Quik surely had musicians like Kenneth Crouch, G-One, and Bacon in there on most of his best production...so it wasn't ALL on him either.

Like, I know Kanye and Dre might use ghost producers to "start the beat off" but then they will come in and just add layer upon layer and fine tune all types of things/sounds in the beat to make it PERFECT

kinda like a sous chef to an executive chef.
yeah you may chop all the veggies and get the water boiling
but that executive chef will come in and add juuust the right amount o this spice or that
and flambay that meat juuuuust so perfectly that brings out things in the dish that no one knew was there

perfect pot o' gumbo

it's already been stated that Dre and Kanye don't create 100% of their beats themselves so why the hate?

Dat Nygga still carried Tha Row for quite some time.

Daz left his mark on "west coast" hip hop and his sound was the embodiment of west coast hip hop for quite a few summers.

I think Dre helped both but I think Warren was way more individually talented than Daz was. And this is coming from someone who loves both and think both Daz and Warren did great work with and without Dre. I just think Daz's work went way further downhill after Dre than Warren's did. Warren is STILL putting in good work on album cuts for several people, very unheralded.

Though KRIT does rank higher than the others on his discography he hasn't had the chance to put out a real dud yet and it'd feel pretty wrong to throw him on a list before even mentioning Pimp C, but I do mark the fuck out for everything he does so I just felt it bore mentioning. I could have also included ?uestlove and Q-Tip if I were looking at things a little differently, and if it weren't for how much I disliked 808s at the time I reviewed it Kanye definitely would be in this list somewhere.

Top 5 lists stink man.

El-P
Prince Paul
DJ Paul & Juicy J
Kanye West
Exile

are the next five on my list, though Exile like KRIT doesn't really have the legs to warrant discussion, so after that Dr. Dre finally sneaks in with Black Milk right behind him.

Near my top 5 as well. Honorable mentions for sure.

El-P, Madlib and Just Blaze deserve mention, too.

Like someone above said, top 5 lists suck cause you always feel like you're excluding so many important people. Let's just say hip-hop has had a fucking plethora of talent on the boards and we've been lucky to live through the really good stuff.

That said, I feel pretty confident in my top 5 list being pretty well set in stone as far as my ears are concerned.

Erick Sermon
Pete Rock
Primo
DJ Quik
Ant Banks

Gotta fit the RZA somewhere in there... but that would mean a top 6.
