"I'm sorry but I'm not feelin Scarface"

Since Chris Rock listed him in his top 5 I decided to give him a try. He's the only top rated emcee that I haven't checked out so I gave The Diary a chance yesterday and the music just wasn't hitting the right spots. He sounds like someones grumpy uncle. The music is too depressing and I can't believe Scarface uses the SAME flow on every track.

My top 5 are:

KRS-One
Black Thought
Del the Funky Homosapien
Nas
Redman

Face, and houston rap from that era in general, derived heavily from the blues. Face talked about the humanity of gangsterism, what its like to see a man die, the paranoia of the dope man, the falling out with the family, the search for redemption. The great themes of western literature for real, the shit they tease out of moby dick & huck finn. Thats what Face is.

hes undoubtedly in the top 10, perhaps 5

It's the somewhat oddball persona he has at times, which I can understand being a polarizing aspect if someone isn't exposed to that in their music.

Personally, it is truly a shame how much he fell off though. His flow was so ill to me at one point in time.

also too many live shows where he just showed up all fucked up and fucked the whole thing off. not as bad as kool keith in that sense. i would still rank keith ahead of him by a nose, too. i feel like rappers from every sub-genre have stolen something from kool keith.

Del is one of the best at creating new signature flows -- that's his trademark. Now if you're talking about his voice, yes, he has the same nasal voice on tracks. When I first checked out Del, I found that very off-putting.

I see why ppl like him though..

they'll praise his "content" or character at his lack of lyricism, flow, wordplay, wit, etc. ya know, things we usually use to measure great rappers.

Its the same reason Tupac is worshipped. but let them tell it tho, I'm a "backpacker", so what do I know. lol

Large Pro and Green Eyed Bandit aren't good examples to make your point.

Ice Cube > Del
Red > Erick
Nas > Large P

You came in here trying to act like he was ridiculous for making his statement.

I don't believe he was trying to say Cube was better than Del because he put him one

He was saying you can't name Del before the guy who put him on because the guy who put him on is greater.

Matter of Opinion. Who am I to argue if your personal Top five has Large Pro and no Nas?
Aside from that, Del and Cube are two TOTALLY different types of emcees. Del's always
been more comical and had more extreme vocal inflections... duke's like a rapping cartoon.
If you like all of that, you might like Del more. *shrugs*

>I don't believe he was trying to say Cube was better than Del
>because he put him one
>
>He was saying you can't name Del before the guy who put him on
>because the guy who put him on is greater.

Then the fact that they're cousins and he put him on are irrelevant.

After reading 91, this is probably way off-base, considering the dude who said it would
put Curren$y and Devin The Dude over Scarface.

just as we would do fifty million times whenever we referenced del back in 93 or whatever
i copped del's albums just cause i liked his name
it was "different"
also Dr. Bombay was my shit

and i am saying Cube is waaaaaaay doper than Del
so how the hell you going to say Del but not Cube because if you're saying Del you MUST know that Cube is his cousin and put him on
and you MUST know that Oshay Jackson is waaaay doper than the dude you mentioned.

i just dont like scarface's voice man
i dont like much of his production neither
yes, i know Devin had similar producers but Devin's shit just hit harder to me and i like Devin's voice and lyrical content better
you notice the content of the two dudes i mentioned over Face?
they have similar styles/voices and their content is the same

i just dont fuck with face too hard
he has a few singles but as i said, his voice gets old for me

They both are unapologetic MCs that rely on their content and delivery more than their technical skill.

Both were the stand out member of great hip-hop groups.

in that he often references things from previous songs going all the way back to his Geto Boys days and if you don't know those songs it might go over your head.

if i didn't go out of my way to listen the classics on some hip-hop nerd shit i'd be in the same boat

i'm not surprised if a southern dude hasn't heard any DJ Quik or souls of mischief

when we DO fuck with southern rap it's usually the funky stuff like Eightball & MJG or UGK. We don't really fuck with Three 6 either.

A dude in The Lesson dissed Quik because of the way he looked on the cover of Rhythmalism. All I could do is smh and tell dude he missed out on some great music.

and I have Face in my top 5.

I grew up on East Coast back pack all day tho. He always killed every collab with lyrical miracle rappers and he has been in the game since the late 80's.

Still not trying to sit thru a whole album.

it's the truth though.

I wasn't really trying to be smart because I tend to lose sight of the younger generations on the internet that I don't converse with in real life all the time.

It's reasonable to think a 17 year old has never heard a Face album before but I just never have that interaction in real life so I find it odd.

But there are so many albums i havent heard in my life. MANY, and I have been consuming rap since i was a little kid.

And i have listened to more rap music than 95% of the general population

I'm not like folk on here who claim to have listened to every album ever, because they think it gives them some authority over others.

I always admit joints, artist, and what not, that were before my time, or i just missed.

Even though I've loved Minds Playin Tricks on Me and Never Seen A Man Cry or his verses with Pac and Gang Starr just never went to the store to buy a Face album. Too busy listening to Tribe, Cypress, Wu, Redman etc

And I've listened to every Drake album

Sorry your masculinity and hip hop identity are so tied to hating beige gawd

thinking you're some sort of authority.

so we hit you with that to put in perspective how silly it is.

if you've listened to EVERY. SINGLE. "Important" RAP. RELEASE. FROM 1986-2001 you deserve a plaque.

I haven't and couldn't do that shit if I tried. I also listen to hella other types of music.

And you can give me a plaque.

But if you read my post I acknowledged that I sometimes hold people to unfair standards due to the fact I forget I'm older than the majority of the people that are now on this site.

With that said, with that age comes experience so stop catching feelings and thinking people are trying to be an authority on hip-hop and learn something.

We all have different musical tastes and likes. I grew up on East Coast rap but Ice Cube is an artist I would consider to be in my top five but not Biggie. And I'm sure I won't convince somebody why that is but it is.

With that said my top five is
Ice Cube
2Pac
Nas
Jay-Z
Outkast

also brad jordan is my favorite rapper so I've stayed away from this post. i will say that people critiquing his technical ability is odd as hell, but to each their own. been listening to face since 93 hard pressed to find another mc as consistent, fresh, and honest since then... I would tell the op to read the lyrics to Look Me in My Eyes. Scarface is the black southern experience for many of us. "how can we all sit suspended in space, just spinning in place and not be covered in Faith....man wait..."

whenever a top 5 discussion comes up, you hear certain names. which i find reasonable.

but what if you were having this debate and some clown named the pudgy chinese rapper from 2 Live Crew in their top five? that's complete nonsense.

sure it's their opinion but i think opinions can be wrong. or if wrong aint the word, i'll say some opinions are just way off-base...

So when I heard Never Seen A Man Cry, I was all in.

And let's not act like those artists he named don't have a different more organic hip-hop sound than some of the bullshit that comes out of the south.

That song alone should make anyone a Scarface fan.

To be fair I can only recall like 3 Scarface songs getting airplay in NYC ("Seen a Man Die", "Smile" and "Guess Who's Back"). It's understandable for New Yorkers to be oblivious to Scarface.

75. "Diary of A Mad Man"
In response to Reply # 73

Death Certificate and Mr. Scarface is Back are two of my favorite rap albums. They are the first albums I learned in their entirety front to back. When I heard Diary of a Mad Man I was hooked and I was like 11 or 12 at the time.

Dear Diary, I'm having a little problem
I can't make it by myself maybe you can help me solve em
I'm confused and I don't know what to do
I'm hoping you can help me cause there's no one else to talk to
I want to die, but it ain't for me
I try to talk to my dad, but my old man ignores me
He says I'm delirious
And I drink too much, so he doesn't take me serious
But little does he know I'm really losing it
I got a head, but ain't no screws in it
I be thinking deep
That's one of the reasons at night I can't sleep
I thought it would change when I was older
But even now I'm still peeping over my shoulder.

Mainly I love Geto Boys but some of his solo shit knocks, too.

No one rapper is for everybody. Anybody who sticks around long enough to make Top 5s is going to have their detractors and (valid) critiques.

I got into rap 93-94, slightly after his reign and just never could get into him. I don't dispute his Goatness as he was a pioneer and all that, just don't feel like listening to him and I tried.

Rakim I can listen to any day, but not KRS. Im not big on Scarface either but do like The Diary and The Fix a lot.

thought is the hank aaron of rap, remarkably talented and even more remarkably consistent.

rakim IS the best emcee pre-1990, point-blank, period, and it's still people stealing his shit today despite the scene but unrecognizable from what it was then. like the otis redding of hip hop.

krs has a certain dedication and energy that i think is tough to match. he was never really a favorite of mine but i saw him a couple times and really enjoyed that, plus i had to respect his commitment to his craft.

40 fonzarelli is a dude who definitely leaves his mark on a track. very distinct sound. at his best he rips it, at his worst he sounds totally ridiculous though.

go to a roots show and everybody looks like you
niggas in harlem dont bump the roots
again, the roots sale out shows abroad because they do "duets" with Zero7 and Greg Porter

im sayin the roots make great music and i've been to their shows

but they dont have that mass appeal

they are a "niche" rap band
they are a band
a fucking BAND

and they are on late night talk show every night
what young kid watches johnny carson type shows?
are those under 25 really checking for them shits?
Letterman?
Conan Obrien?

tell me where does "hip hop" fit in with them shows and that demographic?
again, it's for some blended art gallery type rappers
they've already been shown to have been heavily censored and muted with that Sarah Palin shit

they make good music and sell out shows so that's all that matters

but you notice how in the movie Chris Rock said "the roots" was in his Top5 but it's only one nigga actually rappin in the roots
could Black Thought stand alone and be Top5 with ?uest on drums?
or interchange any one of them niggas thats on keys, tuba or trombone or sax?

The Roots are palatable for the white audience and gave them enough gravitas to cross over and venture into other forms of rap

and it's a BUNCHA rappers that sell out shows in Europe and Japan but dont do SHIT in the states
them farners like what they like i guess

lmao and how many have u been to? are they all over hot 97? obviously not. but you're stretching this to be way more polar than it is. i did hear about the roots right around 96 through a college funk station. and who did i see at the show? none other than rick james! there is no black attendee of a concert, anywhere, ever.

>im sayin the roots make great music and i've been to their

yeah but they are a hip hop band. this isn't like talking about zach de la rocha (or worse), i mean thought is definitely an emcee. and i dont consider mass appeal to be a big plus, i'd say of my top ten some have it and some don't. that's true of most people, i think.

>and they are on late night talk show every night

skipping past this goalpost-moving shit about demographics (and the laughable notion that hip hip is an "under 25" thing in 2015), uh, i dunno man the roots have only had TWO consistent members. thought has rocked with a lot of different personnel. that point was extremely unconvincing.

oh ok so they are not selling out shows in the states? and who are these other acts with the same "gravitas?" foh, dude, come on i have heard this schtick before in person lol

left eem in the driveway
soakin wet sold the six foe
couldnt keep it no moe that muthafucka was filthy
moe dead bodies been in that trunk than a cemetary and a mortuary"

of course you'd think differently because this IZ a black thought-centric site
but cali niggas between 25 and 45 would agree with me
the average cali niggga
not them mynoriti type niggas

lol

or what about this skit...

I got me a
9 millimeter
foady-foe
AR15
thirty odd six with a scope nigga
Ithaca 37 12gauge shotgun with a 5 pound slide nigga
we all the way nice nigga
streetsweeper and shit
pistol grip pump you know

Low-Kee gave me the whole hook up

now that i think about it
yall is HORRIBLY wrong if you think Black Thought can come anywhere NEAR lynch

black thought aint even the best member of his "band"
when ppl think of the roots they dont think of BT
they think of "the fat nygga on drums with the afro"

yeah the roots get love but ask general ppl what their fave roots tracks are and they'd be like uhhhhh
the roots tour well and got a gig on the johnny carson show
so they won, i guess

again, THEY won
not BT but THEY
BT is eating but only cause the fat nygga carried him on his back
he carries the whole team actually

tell you every album
meaning no body knows him and he don't really get local support like other local acts
a whole swarth of "rap fans" just aren't checking for the roots and an even larger group ain't checking for black thought specifically
nothing wrong with that
they probably have WAY more money than who ever the flavor of the month is now
so that's a testament to them understanding and working the industry game and doing it their way

you could replace Black Thought with MF Doom or Jay Electronica and still get the same response

In response to Reply # 0

to go back and listen again, only to come up perplexed.

"His lyrics are too real and gritty for a lot of people"
-His tales don't sound any "realer" than say 2pac, any grittier than dozens of other cats out there

"He's like a hard liquor. Its hard to go down, very rough, burns a lot, but once you get past it, its real good"
-I could see using this to describe Tarantino or Eminem or even Ghostface in a different way. But if you can handle Kill Bill or Em's first 2 albums, I don't hear a damn thing Scarface is saying that's so much harder to down.

"He's not 'super-lyrical-miracle' but he's POETIC in a simple but poignant way"
- reeeally tho? I love stuff like that, so i go back and liate and all I ever seem to hear when I listen is a shit ton of overused cliches and platitudes with like 20 "motherfuckers" per verse for no creative reason, just because space is uncomfortable I guess and so more filler is needed.

You'd think listening to Scarface must be like hearing an old Cuban cigar smuggler recite a forgotten Norman MacCaig version of Moby Dick, striking in its consice punch and verbal economy, rejected for the harsh raw depictions of the way wooden peg rubbing against bone feels.

Instead, because the person praising Scarface is almost always someone whose taste you respect, you go back to listen, excited to hear this and instead this is what you hear

"A new day, brings a new problem to a brother
And all I gots ta say is thank god for my mother
Cause without my mommy dear my life would've been joke
Either locked up playin' dead and still slangin' dope but nope
The lord he had a plan for me
And with his help, my mother made a man of me..."

Hmmmm...skip ahead:

"I seen my homies go and come
And judgement day is just somethin we can't run from
So I know my number's comin' up
So I gotta protect myself from suckers who be runnin' up"

Hmmm...maybe another song:

"Now when you're rollin' through yo' muthafuckin' hood
Tell me what you see? Some muthafuckin' G's
Roamin' in my muthafuckin' hood and thangs
Seems to me my mutherfuckin' hood done changed
Cause ni**as used to kick it with the rival gangs
But now we gots to deal with them survival thangs"

... Fastforward:

"So get yo' muthafuckin' boys together
I represent S.A., nigga, and we makin' noise forever
And gettin' paid at the same time
So you respect a muthafucka when a muthafucka claim mine
Cause if you disrespect, you ass out"

...*scratches head*...maybe another song:

"It's the return of the real nigga wit real shit
And when the smoke dies down its still a nigga left to deal wit
This mutha fucker standin one deep solo
Exercising parts of the game Bo don't know
I bring it to a mutha fucker full throttle..."

...don't skip ahead so quick, try to ride it out this time:

"...
Nigga I'm straight killa slash for sure drama
And every mutha fucker involved gon' face trauma
Punk I ain't no mutha fucka rappin a song
You bust your caps when you rap
But I bust back at your dome bitch
And this is always all day killa"

...lol OK maybe another song:

"It's on, and once again I bring niggas the rough
Fuckin with us, that get you motherfuckers touched
Hit in the darkest alleys, where the super sports Rally
Beatin up the block, leavin these motherfuckers shot"

fuck...another track:

"Lord I know that I've been wrong
They say a man is lost without a prayer, without a song
So I'm singing on my knees cause I believe you'll keep me strong
Until it's time for me to bring it home
But until it's time for me to bring it home
I'll be out in these streets, hanging in the hood
Even gangsters need to pray, cause when I pray it's understood"

...i feel like im on Facebook and my friend's little nephew is giving poetry a try. Next:

"Look me in my eyes, tell me what you see
Do you think I'm crazy?
Sometimes I wanna die, maybe I'll be free
Free from all this bullshit that's constantly surroundin me"

...next:

"It's like this, y'all niggas been invadin my turf
Ignore examples I've set while ya play the dirt
It's only one thing to do now, and that's to set it -
Off, and show you motherfuckers who's boss
I don't play games, I just cock the thang
Squeeze the trigger twice and I'll blow out ya brains
I'm pissed, y'all niggas shouldn'ta fucked with this"

Next:

"Hopeless again, and the more I stick around the shit get more fucked up
That's why I'm back on Holloway gettin' fucked up
Thinkin' back on how it used to be when it was all good
We wasn't trippin', this was our hood
I had your motherfuckin back
And when it was time to go to war, it was like "where these niggas at?"
Fuck rackets, we ain't never been the type to hold out
Or, let a motherfucker show out"

Next:

"Fears weightless, I fear none in the physical form
Let us face, nigga, you can't do me no harm
Up here shakin, wishin me well, but deep in you heart
You wantin me close to make sure I dont ease in the dark
And squeeze wit thought, and leave you with the hole in your head
For wantin me dead, but I come to watch you suffer instead"

FFWD:

"I'm a nervous wreck, I walk with stress
I used to walk around with a tech, but nowadays I be like fuck it dawg
You fuck wit me I gots to fuck wit yall
And revenge is just another word for payback
Payin you back today for this grudge that I had for you way back
You niggas knew I wouldn't play that"

FFWD again:

" See, I pimp the game like its a prostitute
And I won't stop until I clock the loot
Misunderstand me and I cock and shoot
Plus, I done learned what to do and what not to do"

...never mind, back to my trusty Pharoahe Monch, Andre 3000, Ghostface, Jean Grae, Redman, Nas, Brother Ali, Lupe Fiasco, Rakim, L-Boogie, Big Daddy Kane, Sonny Cheeba, Geechie Suede, Black Thought, Action Bronson, Killer Mike, Big Boi, Raekwon, Mos Def, Common, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, KRS, Slick Rick, Gza, Rza, Jigga, Biggie, Kool G Rap, Baatin, T3, Elzhi, Royce, Em, Canibus, Fat lip, Slimkid, Ladybug, Ish, Cee-Lo, Posdnous, Trugoy, Aesop Rock, Del, Aceyalone, Myka 9, Rugged Man, Mr Lif, Akro, Immortal Technique, etc

If I want some "I feel like I'm about to die, dear Lord in the sky tell my momma don't cry" I'll pop in some 2pac.

In response to Reply # 100

Jamar has a larger position/agenda that he uses his examples to back up. "White rappers lack soul. Here's proof." Ideally he'd like to persuade others of this.

I'm not firmly behind the argument Scarface is wack and then trying to prove it. I'm describing what the actual experience of repeatedly trying to get into him is like. I didn't say he's not poetic or not all these things fans say about him. I'm saying I remain open but this is all i seem to get when y'all send me back to the guy.

I don't want to persuade people Scarface is wack. I hope for 2 kinds of responses:

1. People who have the same experience being like "you have that too" lol

2. People who like Scarface seeing "ah I see what's happening, try listening for this or that".

Scarface is one of those enigmas because he's an artist who tends to really be big with a lot of heads whose opinions I really respect and tastes I share. Yet he sounds like Jabba the Hut spitting mock Tupac rhymes in DMX patterns. I love his voice though.

Moby Dick...
Man... just smh.
Face knows who he's communicating with, and it obviously isn't you. I don't know
how you could show us any clearer that you just don't have the perspective and
experience to appreciate the man's work.

You obviously can't. Immortal Technique (lyrics and voice), Eminem (lyrics and voice), rza (voice), Ghostface (lyrics and voice), Tarantino (visuals) are all far harder pills for newbies to swallow or digest than anything Scarface is saying

No. I never said he didn't have soul. But there are a boatload of second rate rappers, convicts-turned-rappers, and 2pac types that say the same thing with the same amount of feeling and nobody is putting them in top 5 and top 10 lists.

In fact, my experience, many of the people who praise Scarface are ultra dismissive of tupac for all the same kind of reasons (cliches, recycled rhymes, etc). I've always been a Pac fan. I don't dislike Scarface (like I said earlier, I bought the Fix when it came out and still like it), but I don't see where this top 5 top 10 angle is coming from.

Em is not a hard pill to swallow. You're either annoyed by him or
not. The rape jokes, the gay slurs and murder of his baby's mother
gets boring after a while.

They seemed to be the most popular rappers by far in the mid 90's around here, as they both conveyed a certain "realness", relatability and emoting style that made them similarly endearing. So I'm actually surprised to read your experience regarding the two.

Pac and face seem to offer much the same appeal (great voice, genuine passion, emotive songs, cliche-ridden recycled lyrics that a 15 year old might write in a diary)

It just seems like the general m.o. among "serious" Hip-Hop aficionados is that Pac is kinda wack/overrated and Scarface is one of the great lyricists/poets of our time. And they basically pull from the same boilerplate.

examples I posted already. Most of those lines and phrases are shit pac and a couple hundred other cats have probably said a thousand times. That same old stuff heads make fun of tupac for. You know, "if I die, ask the lord in the sky to tell my mom don't cry, this life got me stuck, motherfuckers better duck, this is how it feeeels to be a motherfucking killer, when you try to survive and nothing could be realer, the old heads tried to raise me, but I was too crazy, raised by the streets, gettin blazed in a daze G"

Etcetera etcetera

Face predates Pac so not sure why you're so hell bent on comparing the two. Plus most cats shittin' on Pac are east coast cats still bitter about the way he went at their city. They started clowin Pac once he went the Hennessy/enemies route with his wordplay. Wasn't always the case though. No, he's not the lyrical, miracle, metaphor/simile flipping emcee but he's effective.

a beautiful thing. For example, i listed ladybug and ish who are the furthest thing from lyrical miracle, yet there's something i find really unique and delectable within their simplicity. Its efficient yet crafty. Its their own.

And that Hennessey/enemies shit pac gets clowned for is the same type of shit scarface fills his songs with (not that particular pair of words, but same idea of boilerplate phrases on shuffle)

always find the things his fans point to describe his appeal (often centered around his supposed exquisite and uncanny writing style) puzzling whenever I go back and listen for that stuff. I get it if you say its his voice and his soul and his passion.

I can probably name 100 emcees that I genuinely enjoy on some level. Maybe more. Scarface is prolly somewhere in the middle of that list, while all these other heads who love what I love are like top 10. I'm not hating, I'm just mystified. A lot of those same cats totally dismiss a Pac

what about i dunno...any verse from Faith?

'Deep in the mind that wide opens
Right here we stand alive, we live focused
We open-minded, still we die hopeless
With our pride broken and bullet holes covered where we stay at
And everybody's playing for keeps, most people pray that
We all make it up out this godforsaken place that we've been all faced with
We take our chances but they all wasted
And once again you see me (marching, mobbing)
But how long must I continue to see my homies dodgin these marksmen
The whole nine put on the line but never in mind to become the head sergeant
We all targets, the votes are in, but they ain't ours
We got these politicians running their game to regain power
While our whole black community sours
Crime rate towers, plagued by white powders
And they claim to helping us to clean up our community
But ain't no open opportunities, impunity
Is what these demons use to regulate
We keep in mind we can run but we can't hide cause the streets we walk are never safe
Still all my shattered hopes and dreams remain scattered
Broken into thousands of pieces, smashed and tattered
But it don't matter, hipocrisy in your democracy
Is stopping me, so I'm retaliating properly
Theologically, society has got me pressured by the hate
And Heaven knows I have faith, I have faith"

I can get why some folks don't get it with him but he's solid, can stick to a concept, can talk his sh*t, can flow to any beat, can take your through the motions. I don't know, Face is just great to me.

In fact, his LP Untouchable is one of the rare LPs in my collection that I can play all the way through. Even played out ass "Smile" doesn't get skipped. The dude is a Blues artist that raps. Now I'm about to rock all the face I can.

Like how can anyone here this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c6cYLHNCz4

-- and not feel like this is exactly what you want from a 40-plus year-old man who has seen and done it all in this industry?

Not gonna berate a man for his choice tho.

My sentiments exactly. I'm a huge Face fan and it has nothing to do with me being from the South. I think in terms of subject matter he has evolved greatly throughout his career. He has the ability to touch on many topics through his music. Mr. Scarface is Back sounds nothing like The World Is Yours and Made sounds nothing like Untouchable. It's like he went from being the murdering dope dealer to being the reflective hustler that made it out the game and now uses his experiences to coach the current players of the game from the sidelines. People like what they like though and I respect opinions but to me Face is the epitome of musical evolution in terms of subject matter, content and how he chooses to present them to his audience.

He's literally gotten better/more advanced every year while maturing. And the quality of work has remained largely consistent.

Appreciate it man. "Who Do You Believe In" off of MADE is a great song. It poses questions. It's like Jada's "Why" on steroids.

"Got mama crying because she know deep down he's needing her help but he's a dead man walking still she prays for his health. Why did Corey have to die young I'm losing my friends, fought a war against Cancer but he lost in the end, fuck"

TOP FIVE means your entire body of work spread out over at LEAST a decade is just phenominal

dont put out 3 albums in 2 years and expect to be Top 5

We can't be stopped and Mr Scarface Is Back dropped the same year. Same year!!! He dropped four dope solo LPs in the 90s and then gave y'all east coast niccas The Fix in 2002. Face put out dope material post 2000 while most of your favorite artist can't even string together several good songs in a decade. Face definitely has longevity

clearly spoken meditations on life, using words anyone can understand

you need that super duper convoluted rhyme pattern and think complexity makes it art

we disagree...if you can get across solid truths abt life in a succinct compact easily digested way...thats literature put to music

no other rapper could have made a national hit out of a elegy like Face did w/ Pac. i lost a peer...young. & that song verbalized shit for me that i simply did not have the words for

you wilding if you say Face isnt an artist & easily one of the great musicians not just rappers...but lyricists & musicians of all time

does it really matter?

Actually, surprisingly, its not bad at all. The only Springerspaniel song I've ever actually enjoyed. Read the lyrics too as I was listening and IMO that's a perfect example of dope original lyricism using plain words.

I also listened to The Untouchable a bit last night, since that and the Fix are my two favorite albums of his, and, like pac, he can even make the most recycled phrases sound dope. I disagree totally with the critique that his flow is always the same. Oh and, like pac, he does have his original moments as a writer. Mary Jane is a great example of that. I never smoked and I always loved that song. But in between the gems, he does use a lot of rehashed filler.

>clearly spoken meditations on life, using words anyone can
>understand
:
its not about words people can or can't understand. its about having a grab-bag of a handful of phrases and just shuffling them around each time.

its about boilerplate vs original thought. Like pac, dude has had about 10 original thoughts and created 10,000 songs by mix and matching them. And that's fine, but then people call him this great mount rushmore writer of our time and i get perplexed.

>you need that super duper convoluted rhyme pattern and think
>complexity makes it art
:
ladybug and ish are super duper convoluted complex?

>we disagree...if you can get across solid truths abt life in a
>succinct compact easily digested way...thats literature put to
>music
:
absolutely. that's different than having "tell mom don't cry, i hope the God in the sky can forgive me if i die" in one song and then having "time to die, but if i gotta go/ tell momma don't cry, only God knows" in another song, rinse and repeat over and over again.

>no other rapper could have made a national hit out of a elegy
>like Face did w/ Pac. i lost a peer...young. & that song
>verbalized shit for me that i simply did not have the words
>for
:
i can't front on that. my condolences. but let's be clear, i never said i don't like Scarface or can't enjoy him. I'm also a pac fan.

>you wilding if you say Face isnt an artist & easily one of the
>great musicians not just rappers...but lyricists & musicians
>of all time
:
one of the greatest lyricists of all time is a pretty astronomic standard tho

i still say Diddy has been more of an influence on HipHop than J Dilla

when you think about a TOP5 you think about ICONIC rappers
those that have left INDELIBLE marks on hip hop's history

we can say that E-40 has left terminology (he brought that Bay Slang to the masses) on hiphop
E-40 brought that fast ass flow to hiphop
E-40 is STILL on Top40 bangers that be bumped in the club TODAY

you riding for Black Thought but he don't have no club banger
name one person in a Top5 that don't have no club bangers or mass appeal?

if you want to severely limit it to backpacker rappers then he MIGHT get a Top10 but I can see Aceyalone, Q-Tip, Guru and a handful of other rappers that will beast him.

and fuck what ya heard but JD will will always = Jermaine Dupree

i mean i suppose that could proven with some OE-ish logic but i think diddy's stuff actually sounds absurdly dated and i dont see him doing shit today. the more time passes, the more a difficult comparison doesn't seem so difficult imo.

dude his shit is pretty esoteric, i dont hear people anywhere (even in the bay anymore) saying the weird ass shit he says on his records. like it was some people from the east bay talking that way 15-20 years ago, but i wouldnt say he was shaping the american lexicon or anything.

lmao club bangers and mass appeal? and we are talking about e-40? sorry did i miss where "baller blockin!" went to no. 1 on the charts?

do white people say "don't be no captain!"
meaning "dont be saving these hoes"
where did that saying come from?
E-40 has a track called CAPTAIN SAVE A HOE
which defines a man just doing dumb doodoo dumb shit to win a broad over
that term "don't save em" is all throughout fucking hip hop
Master P stole the term and ran with it
even Project Pat got a track called "don't save her, she dont wanna be saved"
now the term is shortened to "you all cap'n ass nigga"

another term or slang E-40 brought to hip hop was all that "for shizzle muh nizzle"
ppl think Snoop dog brought it out
but really it was EARL STEVENS was the one who brought it to the masses

how bout this one

zap board beneath the ashtray
woofers in the back
water in the duals make loud glasspacks
gold tippy toes without a LICK of chrome
bought a set of vogues and left the stickers on
seven grand worth of bump for the trunks
paid CAAAAASSSSSHHHHH
all ones!!!!

who was saying "bubble" on rap albums before E-40?
as in "i'm bout to bubble and get my paper up!"

sorry man.
but Black Thought aint left no marks on hip hop
nowhere did he write "black thought wuz here"

old heads from the East say certain old rappers are the GOAT. Its a nostalgic/pioneer rapper thing. Its just something they say that isnt totally based on skills and catalog.

One that basically makes the need to think about the concept itself a nonfactor in your own mind? You could've at least went with something more original and substantial than "old heads like old shit because it's old."

Thats what it is. When old heads make up their top rappers list its based on skills, discog, nostalgic and pioneer reasons. the last two can outweigh the others tho for older people. History outweighs logic for a lot of people when they are comparing things from sports athletes past and present to movies past and present.

and for the sake of argument I'm basing my question off you being correct in your assessment (which you're not, but for the sake of argument you are).
How is nostalgia and being the first to innovate something worth less than things like contemporary status or popular opinion?
Keep in mind I'm asking this because you can take modern-era artists and swap out those two from the last two you named, and have a similar argument.

but just because you were the first to do something doesnt mean that it was done the best lol and thats my point. BUT that is logic behind most older peoples assessment on music past and present. So and so is better because he was here first is one of the most ridiculous arguments ever. I can sit here and ask u the same question, why is it because it was done first makes it better than who is doing it currently? The logicaly answer would be that yeah that person innovated something but generations to come are gonna keep making it better. So give respect to the innovator but their peak came and gone and they could only do so much with it.

You're taking a lot of liberty with your merits, especially since you're trying to make an example out of me that doesn't apply, but you still haven't answered my question. Fair enough.

just doesnt offer anything special to me...

similar to pac worship

pac just had more charisma and passion...

but neither impressed me with their words...and i didn't really care that much about their stories...maybe bc it was so mundane to me...

i always wanted to hear and see things bigger and different from what i saw everyday...

i do like the blues-like aspect of some of his songs and that's what drew me to any of his shit i like...but shit, gimme bun b over face just for the simple fact it didn't necessarily matter what was said he impressed me with how he said it

pac and face have broad appeal so there's obviously an audience for that...but they don't have the individual impact on me
