They targeted Cruise and Travolta not only for their fame, but the deep-seated insecurities and personal issues they held that could be used to entice them. The Travolta gay rumors seem to have legs and has reportedly been used to keep him in line, whereas Cruise is revered to a degree that places him a hair below Hubbard. Haven’t read much about Smith though.

I actually cut Scientology some slack as a religion... who am I to tell somebody else what to believe. As an organization though I tend to give a fair degree of credence to the horror stories, though the really awful stuff seems to be the experience of a minimal number participants.

My biggest client's a former Scientologist. He still feels like it helped him get through some tough times in his life, but I know he has regrets about it.

As far as celebrities go, Joe Boyd's book 'White Bicycles' has some pretty great insight into the change, good and bad, Scientology affected for the Incredible String Band (you know I love those guys), and his own somewhat bemused exploration of it following their conversion.

The really awful stuff is the experience of those with less money
to contribute, those who have displeased certain higher ups, and those who write or speak negatively about them publically. Shit, they're literally selling people salvation, making them work like crazy and paying them very little. You ever watch Malcolm In The Middle? You know when Frances gets to that logging camp and LaVernia works them to the bone and dude gets like a $7 check? Yeah, that shit's a real part of scientology. Not for everyone, but for many, and they make Comcast look like customer service rock stars in contrast when it comes to trying to leave.

They follow people, harass them, and sue like crazy. They’ve infiltrated multiple governments. People who have left report being followed and harassed, along with being punished by being denied access to family members. There’s a pretty deep rabbit hole with scientology and the awful stuff really isn’t relegated to a small handful of people.

Shit, their leaders own wife- who was also highly ranked in the organization- was most likely relegated to a work camp. This is unconfirmed but she’s been “missing” since 07 and their history leads to either that or murder as the likeliest conclusions. One guy climbed a bladed fence to escape.

As with anything, people have different experiences, but there's enough documented information to conclude that scientology definitely has more than a minimal amount of people who have experienced the ugly side of the organization.

i don't know enough. literally i don't know anyone that's remotely connected to scientology present or past. but when you take all of those stories in isolation it seems like there's a lot of them, but when you take the whole organization into account what percentage of their followers have those stories?

When you ask what percentage actually have those stories, the answer depends on how you look at it.

If you’re asking how many speak out, the answer is a lot. If you’re asking how many speak out that have a high profile, the answer is not many. The problem is simple: when I read a story about how they cram people into trailers until it’s full as a form of punishment, feed them minimally, made to work 16 hour days for ridiculously low, third world levels of pay and force them all to confess their “crimes”- which were then not accepted if the “crime” wasn’t severe or incriminating enough, forcing that person to come up with something bad enough that it would be accepted as a confession, I’m usually reading that from the perspective of a specific person who was there and spoke out.

The question then becomes, what about all those people who were there? Are we to assume that this was one event that happened one time and was simply an aberration? If everyone else who was there doesn’t write or interview about that experience, does that mean those stories do not exist or are invalid? Everyone in that particular trailer during the event being spoken of by one person has that story, but only a couple of people are speaking about it. The percentage of people who publicly spoke out doesn’t really line up with the number of people who had the experience, does it?

Then I read about how people who leave are forced to sign a confession of all their “crimes” and that their “crimes” will be altered into something more severe if the signed confession isn’t deemed incriminating enough.

It’s sort of like police brutality and corruption: Are we to assume that the only incidents are the ones being caught on camera and posted online? The ones where a lawsuit was filed, won, and publicized? No, the clear truth is that there is more than what we have on public record. “Going Clear”, “Beyond Belief”, and “Inside Scientology” aren’t the only books, but they form a pretty clear and consistent picture of the organization and it’s ills.

I grew up in Hemet and San Jacinto. Lived there until 2010, in fact. Gold Base is in San Jacinto. I’ve heard quite a few firsthand accounts of experiences over the years and heard a lot of rumors. Some (like Golden Era Productions being a porn studio) were untrue, while others (that they owned Kirby apartments) were half true (they had several members living there in groups of 6, but to my knowledge they didn’t own the place) and others turned out to be absolutely true (they use parts of Gold Base for harsh punishments and something of a work camp).

When I read a multiple books that were released in the last few years and those stories match up with rumors I’d heard from others in the area from the early nineties through the mid 2000’s, that’s validation of those rumors in my eyes.

The quantity of people with these stories and the quantity of people who speak out don’t need to align. For every one who escapes and tells their story there are ten more who don’t escape at all. There are those who leave under certain circumstances and do not wish to endanger their family and/or endanger any visiting or communication privileges they might have. It’s a very simplistic perspective to say that only a few people (percentage wise) have these stories.

as I said, I rend to lend some credence to the rumors - but they're still rumors; if they were proven true, a lot of them would cause criminal action to be brought against the organization, and to the best of my knowledge that hasn't happened yet, at least not en masse*. You obviously have a lot more proximity to the organization than I do, however, and I appreciate your insight.


*there've been plenty of criminal convictions of Scientologists, but as far as I can tell not for the kinds of things you're alleging, though there have been civil cases.

haven't read any books and honestly don't want to delve too much futher because while i don't consider myself gullible to all for it i'm one not to leave well enough alone. i went into the church giftshop here in nyc one day with a friend when i was younger planning to just clown on some joker hit. there were teenaagers working there and they straight scared the fuck out of me. that's as close as i ever want to come to any of it, but can't pretend like the whole shit doesn't fascinate the fuck out of me.

In the early 90's, my aunt, some cousins, and her husbands family went hiking in the SJ mountains and apparently wandered into a wash on the way back down that was on their property. They said a bunch of scientologist guys rolled up on quads with guns who said they were trespassing and would shoot on sight if they ever came back.

I thought they were exaggerating at first but over the years I came to believe them word for word. between that,other stories and limited interactions through the years I just kind of developed this interest in the organization. Going Clear is a fantastic read and once you start learning about Hubbard in particular there are so many WHAT THE FUCK? details that you just sort of burn through it trying to get to the next WTF! situation.

while I'm sure the methodology has been refined since 1969, and the exploratory late-hippy mindset was different than our own, it's a pretty captivating glance. (And interestingly, the changes were perceived as very positive at first.)

Sp pretty much explained a typical recruitment effort. They tried some recruiting in the 90’s and I’ll be damned if the process wasn’t virtually identical. They even had a small bus waiting at the mall for anyone who wanted to go, with promises of “no commitment required!”.

For the most part, people are drawn in for the same reasons as they are drawn in to Christianity or any other religion. Part of what leads some into the organization is that they prey on common insecurities and issues we all have, and some people are just marks for that sort of thing.

Depressed? Confused? Dissatisfied with your lot in life? It’s not you and your choices. It’s not your circumstances. It’s not a psychological issue or any other illness. In fact, those choices, circumstances, illnesses are due to…. THATANS!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only can Scientology free you from the evil thatans (you’re also a thatan, by the way), scientology can grant you magical powers and allow you to ascend into higher levels of consciousness and universal understanding! You’ll remember all your past lives! If you’re fourteen years old, you might even be selected for the SeaOrg priesthood! You can become a “pre-clear”, creating your own universes! You can walk on other planets! You’re basically en route to becoming a god with super awesome abilities.

Others are romanced by the perception cultivated by high-profile celebrity members while claiming those successes as coming on the back of Scientology.

Once you’re firmly in, however, they look for hooks they can use to keep you in, including any family or friends who are in the organization, to say nothing of keeping a record of your “crime” confessions.

It’s incredibly dense with fucked up stories, shit that just makes you say to yourself “NO!!!!!....No fucking way…. Seriously? Wtf?” but the thing that gets me is how great Wright is at notating stories with differing versions, where things are unconfirmed, where certain elements are questionable or inconsistent.
