"Grand jury clears HPD officer in suspect's shooting death"
HOUSTON -- A Harris County grand jury on Tuesday cleared an HPD officer in the shooting death of Jordan Baker, 26, last January.
Baker's family was anxiously awaiting the decision along with a handful of protesters. On Sunday night, they held a rally and candlelight vigil where Baker was killed.
When the shooting occurred, Baker was at a northwest Houston strip center at 5700 W. Tidwell that reportedly had a lot of break-ins. The Houston Police Department said Baker was looking in windows when veteran Officer Juventino Castro approached.
Baker, an HCC college student, struggled, ran away, and then allegedly put his hands in his waistband and charged toward Officer Castro. That's when Castro shot and killed him.
Baker was later determined to be unarmed.
Castro was working an extra job as a security officer at the time and was in his HPD uniform.
"Justice for Jordan that's all my mind and heart can focus on right now," said Janet Baker, the victim's mother at Sunday night's rally.
