"Did you hit your goals for 2014?"

I set fiver personal goals for 2014 and I nailed three of 'em, kinda hit the fourth and bombed on the fifth.

Here's how I did:
1.) Quit smoking (done)
2.) Get a raise/promotion at the gig (done)
3.) Raise the credit score (done)
4.) Cook more meals for my family (push)
5.) Hoop/Golf/do some physical activity at least once a week (FAIL)

All in all, I feel good about 2014. I definitely have room for improvement for 2015 in the areas of health and working out, I still got some financial things I need to get in order, and I gotta step up my dad game since the kid's getting older.

But I'm ready to set my goals for next year.

What about y'all? How did you do goals wise for 2014?

religiously sticking to a goal for a single year is like running a marathon without training. You are bound to hurt yourself and become deeply disappointed.

The year can be conveniently broken up into quarters and so I have a hierarchy of goals because of the way a year can break down.

1 year: satisfies major themes, large abstract concepts, think more abstract while being less specific (long distance)
3 months: attainable, potentially challenging tangible goals. this is where the work happens with making BIG goals happen (middle distance)
1 month: very short sprints (short distance)
Weeks: micro sprints.

Day by day stuff is kind of done while you live your life but an interesting thing happens when you have a quarter goal in place; you start to focus your daily energy into completing the goal.

So the nuts and bolts of it is that I have my life divided into a few preselected channels that I focus on currently my channels are:

*Previous Quarter reflection (what happened, what worked, what didn't work)

*Finance (money stuff, obvi)

*Home (status of the house I live in, is it stable? is it not? what big ticket items might I want? what needs work?)

*Social (just making sure I'm reaching out to old connections or building new ones)

*Organizational (work, work and work stuff, what do I want to accomplish? how will I accomplish it?)

*Enrichment (the mind, the body)

Up coming Quarter projection (where MIGHT I want to go after this quarter wraps up?)

At the start of every quarter I have a text document that is created where it is "living". When a fresh quarter begins I outline where I've been, what I am going to do in the quarter and where I might go with the next one.
I mention the "living" aspect of the document because it is an ongoing process of looking back and forward in time to make the most informed decision.

another aspect of this exercise is that it acts as a safe zone to try out potential moves/ideas/decisions because you are forced to think things through before doing them.

The written word is very very very powerful. I believe in it. Just about everything I have written HAS HAPPENED. It is so powerful that I have actually been a bit hesitant about putting the next phase in motion because Im having a good time being lazy. Once you start the process the ball just picks up speed quickly and before you know it you are doing things you never thought you would be doing.

first it started with a method I USED to do

which was based on the 3 by 5 index card

during the evening you pick just TWO MAJOR GOALS to take on the next day. by your door or where ever it is you place your keys place the index card right next to the keys. when you leave for the day read the card and put it in your back pocket, purse or book.

dont think about the card

however an interesting thing happens, you actually end up taking on the day in a different way.

the card is kind of a like a cheat card, when you dont know whats going on with the day you look at the card.

you can also list smaller goals on the other side or shopping lists, to-dos, just stuff you want to knock out of the way really.

the TWO MAJOR GOAL limit just comes from the fact that humans are not so great at context switching. have lots of other stuff going on, the two major goals should be very big things that move your life forward.

so, this system was expanded into what I do now.

well a version of this method...essentially I take the big goal and break it into smaller goals. and put time lines on those. for example.

2015: Finish my novel

Tasks to complete:
*outline
*synosis
*character breakdown
*chapter breakdown
*write chapters (each chapter is a goal)
*once finished, read and edit
*corrections

etc etc. then i put a timeline on each of those things. so if I say I have a month to finish the outline, if I finish it in two weeks, then those two weeks give me a jumpstart on the next goal.

its just makes you feel like you're doing more than just having a big goal like "Fix my credit" and are going everywhere to do it. when you can break it down to '

*request credit report from agency
*review, highlight discrepancies
*write letters

blah blah blah. people say it's not organic but for ppl who have procrastination or attention issues, it makes things *seem* easier to complete because it's more specific.

being organic put you in a not so great space to begin with
why not do the opposite of what you normally do and make a win happen?

and thanks for the response, breaking down goals into tangible chunks is where the magic happens.

outside of graduating, and i did that. i've done most of the stuff i planned to do...i don't think i thought of them as goals though. like, it was shit that HAD to happen, there was no room for me to not make it happen.

i suppose that's the kind of attitude i need to apply to other areas of my life. lol

Just because you go thru the classified on the dinner table, that don't make the kitchen a office.

Good try tho.

I did not go fishing this year and it is too late to fulfill that dream this late in the year. I do believe that I became a better person this year. I worked hard to become a more patient and tolerant person. 'picked up a lot of knowledge which hopefully, will help me make it through the new year. My niece and nephew have never been fishing, so we are making plans to go next year when the weather is right. I am going to be determined to take them on a nice, fishing & picnic type fishing trip this year !!!

I LUV ALL A' Y'ALL!!! !!!
