"Audio equipment question"
The wife bought me a Sony turntable a couple of years ago and since I've amassed a decent vinyl collection. It's one of those that allow you to convert vinyl to mp3 however I only use it for listening. As of now I have it connected to a cheap surround sound system but I'm ready to step it up a notch. That's where I need help...do I need to purchase an amp or can I get a nice set of book shelf speakers and connect them directly to the turntable? Also I need some brand suggestions

That plays a big part in what I'd advise you to get, as well as what sort of furniture you'd have in it already.

That makes a big difference on where you'd be wise to go. You can get good speakers at just about any price point, but you'd want to get as much for your buck as you can since it's going to be a place you'll spend tons of time in.
