"Did we get duped into asking for police body cameras? "

Yeah.. I'm that guy. The conspiracy guy.

Look back at 9/11 and how eager we were to give up ALL of your privacy. Now we are asking for police body cameras like a camera actually brought justice to Eric Garner.

What are police cameras gonna do? How much you wanna bet they start a live stream channel online so you can watch cops fucking us up in the next 5 years.

The police are always going to get away with whatever they do, cameras or not. What should be the main agenda is arming police with guns that fire rubber bullets. If there is no crime committed by deadly force, then deadly force by an officer should not be allowed or they should face criminal charges.

but not nearly like it should be.

In some cases, even if a person has fired on officers, killing that person is not the answer

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/20-hour-standoff-at-montreal-area-home-ends-in-arrest/article13523537/

^^^ Like in that case. You have a man with dementia that fired a round at cops and was ultimately taken down by rubber bullets. He's alive and can continue getting treatment he needs for his condition.

I'm all for it

down here they make cops who get a lot of complaints wear them and I know for a fact bit makes a difference

this past summer me and the homie were testing out this paintball gun off on this side street firing it into a field

cop showed up

he hopped out the car all aggressive but calmed down when he approached us

just told us we can't shoot in a residential area and we needed to kick rocks

I noticed he had a body camera on him

I'm convinced that ish would've went a total different direction if he wasn't wearing one

but im banned tho.

more than likely he hopped out all amped up then realized it was a paint gun.

I've seen plenty cops hop out the car ready for action but when we didn't run or act terrified they calmed down.

I'm skeptical because it seems like the idea was pushed by the media.

but its being marketed as something that will solve the problem of police brutality.
they'll get body cams city by city and the protests etc will slow down and nothing will be solved.
that's if everybody falls for the okie doke.
you can fool all people sometimes but you can't fool all the people all the time ©, though
so while it may pacify many the public is a bit too woke at this juncture

"take my privacy please" and see it used against us.
Now when the police want to defame you or discredit you they'll have their own personal videos to leak made by them, maybe not even from the incident involved, maybe from 3 years ago when you got mouthy with a cop from a ticket. When they come in your home, a private space, now they'll be recording inside your home, something they couldn't do before without a warrant or your permission. Domestic violence situations, rape situations... victims faces will now be on video for the world to see. I love how people don't trust the cops not to shoot you but somehow they trust the cops to record hours and hours of video of people in vulnerable situations, private spaces and use it ethically. You see how they leak shit now when ever they wanna paint pictures and stories. Wait until they have a tera after terabyte to leak. This will turn the cops into TMZ and Cointelpro all at the same time.

I mean we see how they used the surveillance of mike brown in that corner store to prove that he did all types of shit that is impossible and defame his character. There are no rules to govern data management let alone prosecute people that leak it.

Every time a cop walks into your home with a camera you've provided them with a recording they can go back to 6 months later and review for "probably cause" to get a warrant to go back and search again. This is bad!!!! We're about to give away the protection from illegal search and seizure like it's a candy bar... without so much as a thought.

Now, imagine when your next governor elect, mayor or attorney general campaigns to pass legislation that the police don't like. Release a little footage and campaign over, careers over, even if a crime was not actually committed. You see how the NYPD and St. Louis police are already threatening to leave people unprotected in retaliation for calls for reforms and prosecution. Demanding apologies from foot ball players etc. Now imagine they've got hours and hours of video of every citizen that ever had contact with them at their finger tips. Now they'll say, "oh, the data will never get leaked and we have this protection and that protection to prevent it" but um... do you trust the same guys that are literally threatening the public because they want them to stop murdering people are going to hold true to that?
I don't...

You see that we don't prosecute even when there is video... yet some how video is the solution.

While some of ur concerns r legit ur ignoring the more legitimate ones that could be solved by their use

they've been using em for awhile in my city

and the most important stat that has dropped is use of violent force

I understand the privacy concerns and I believe a middle ground can be legislated.

there are "regulations" which is not the same as legislation. Stuff gets leaked all the time from police departments with no consequences at all for the officers involved.
The two police officers that leaked this...http://cdn2.crushable.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Rihanna-after-Chris-Brown-beat-her-in-2009.jpg
did not face any charges!

Also, how are you going to legislate data protection and prosecute police departments for leaking the video they collect from body cameras when you can't prosecute them for murdering people on tape? How does is that going to work? It won't.

After Snowden do we really think that privacy matters are anything to sneeze at? We can't go into expanding mass surveillance as naively like we did after 9/11.

They can only access it for investigations and they're monitored and routine audits r performed

I also believe footage not used in an ongoing investigation is deleted after 190 days

The question is, if someone gets caught not following the rules was is the punishment? That's how it relates to Rihanna. Is there punishment? Are they doing jail time? If not we're back to where we started. Cops commit crimes and don't go to jail.

With this video collection I don't trust the cops to audit themselves, regulate themselves, administer regulations, limit their access to data and protect our privacy when it's not in their best interest.
They really haven't shown the propensity toward that, funny enough which is why we want to record them in the first place.
What are the penalties if they don't follow these "regulations"?

They set precedents for better or worse. Once your privacy rights go you're not getting them back, ever. Local, state and federal governments keep coming up with ways to convince us to giving up our privacy and we keep falling for it. I say lets not fall for it this time.

Has never gone out of style. All it will do is create ratings and buzz i.e. money. If the police could actually be held accountable for what's captured then sure, but we all saw Rodney (rip) catch one and all those copper cowards walked. Truth be told cops will just turn off the camera and do their dirt then give some bullshit story which all the gang members will support and that'll be that.

as evidence against defendants. civilian defendants.

but still, if the ppl want cameras - if they'll increase confidence in policing then ultimately they may be good. but they can definitely backfire too.

fuck you.

normally it's used against defendants. sometimes i've been able to use it to my clients' benefit too though. but more often it hurts us in DUI cases - the defendants' driving is often captured as is their conduct during the traffic stop including field sobriety testing.

fuck you.

how i'd behave differently at work. Factor in if you are in some sort of customer service field too? lol

It should cut down on bs complaints against cops as well as police brutality. Not saying that a cop doing something on camera will get him punished fairly, but there will be a percentage of cops that curtail their behavior bc they are being recorded.

CAn't wait to hear the first 'camera malfunction' or 'battery died' plea cop (pun intended)

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.
