"Poll question: A comedy about killing a world leader? Did Sony have it coming? "
Tue Dec-16-14 07:34 PM by ndibs

I just can't see another country making a comedy about assassinating Obama and us finding that cute or humorous. I'm not saying all those ppl deserve to have their social security numbers released, but is the subject of assassinating world leaders really fair game for comedy?

There's no barriers to entry to becoming a hacker... you don't need uranium, you don't need billions to invest, you don't need allies and you don't even need to take full responsibility for it seeing as it's so easy to hide the source of attacks. You just need a spare human, a computer, an internet connection and a few years to learn the craft.

...plus there's an almost countless number of teenagers for hire if you don't want to go through the years of learning yourself.

where that is probably true. I don't think they have the talent. Or the ability to identify talent for such a task. It's basically asking if any person from 1962 could hack into a modern secure computer system.

I don't think the hacking is related to the movie. I think it's a convenient pretext for the hackers. But this was not a good idea from the jump. Why would Sony greenlight a movie about two people recruited by the CIA to kill a world leader? And play it for laughs? It would be different if it were a fictional country. But you can't go around making movies like this IMO. It was a bad misstep by Sony I think.

And now they are being gutless by canceling the press tour.

http://deadline.com/2014/12/the-interview-press-tour-canceled-seth-rogen-james-franco-1201327311/

If you think this movie is harmless and was a good idea, then stand by it. Continue with the press tour. You afraid of something happening on the set of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon? Seth and James are not in any danger.

This was a bad look for Sony.

In response to Reply # 5

It happens all the time. Sony's Playstation Network has been hacked twice the past couple of years. North Korea can't even feed their people. If they had the ability to pull off a massive hack like this, I think they would go after other governments rather than a movie studio.

This is based on my very limited knowledge of geopolitics. But whenever you see footage/images of North Korea, it seems like they're stuck in the 1980s infrastructure/technology wise. No doubt they are working on nuclear weapons. But how close are they really?

I think if they could do what they did to Sony, why haven't they done it to other large corporations or countries? You do hear about hacking attempts from time to time and it's usually China or Iran. So it's possible. I just don't think Sony would waste their talents on Sony. But then again, their leaders are certifiably insane. So the perceived insult might be enough for them to go off. I can't call it.

The government in China filters the internet regarding what people in China can see on the internet.

Are you saying the US Government filters the internet for people in the USA?

Because, to me, it is conceivable that someone in a country outside of the US could put something on the internet about North Korea.

In that situation, how could the US Govt stop me (or anyone else in the USA) from seeing that?

??

typical american thinking they always get the best

why do you think you get 1005 the internet has to offer?
you think you have access to every single IP address there is?

and there are certain IP addresses that if you visit them you will be paid a "visit" shortly thereafter

try it and see

Well, I wonder how 'us' in London, Madrid, Oklahoma City, Tokyo, Tel-Aviv or any of the hundreds of other cities that have been hit with attacks by terrorists (foreign and domestic) feel about this? Is there universal agreement that the movie is a bad idea? Is it not playing in any of those hundreds of cities? Will those millions of ppl all stop living life bc some randoms claim they plan shenanigans?

profitable film Sony put out last year (something we only learned from the leaks, ironically)

So Rogen was rewarded with the greenlight to make another movie with (what are supposed to be) ironic comedic references to real life.

And they knew it was dumb, because the Sony exchanges in Asia said "fuck you, we're not showing it. The end." Never mind that this is 2014 tho, and we live i na very small world nowadays. The shit woulda been fount out sooner or later.

The CEO of Sony - not the CEO of Sony of America, the CEO of the whole gotdamn company, the dude from Tokyo - was emailing Amy Pascal like "tell Seth Rogen to fix this shit so that it's not so offensive to North Korea". This dude is supposed to be spending his time selling TVs and bad CD Players, not worrying about a mid-level comedy made by two stoners in Hollywood.

ANd then Sony Pictures' dumb idea of "we'll take Sony's name off of it and just leave the Columbia woman. NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW." Do they think Koreans are too stupid to use Wikipedia (which has a Korean version) and look up "Columbia Pictures - Sony - yep, that's dem right dere."

Carmike Cinemas has decided not to show Sony's comedy The Interview, a source tells The Hollywood Reporter. Carmike's headquarters are in Columbus, Ga. and operates 278 theaters and 2,917 screens in 41 states.

Sony is moving forward with plans to release the film, and earlier in the day told exhibitors who had booked The Interview that they were free to not show the film.

The news comes on the heels of the latest threat from the hacker group, who call themselves Guardians of Peace. The group, which has released tens of thousands of Sony employees' private emails and files, seemed to make its first threat towards theaters in the newest note. The letter mentioned The Interview, the Seth Rogen and James Franco-starring comedy that centers on an assassination attempt on North Korea's leader, and promised more files would be released as "a Christmas gift" if the film hit theaters as scheduled.

"We will clearly show to you at the very time and places 'The Interview' be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to," it read.

The note then mentioned the September 11, 2001, attacks, and stated that the "world would be full of fear."

"Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made. The world will be full of fear. Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time. (If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)"

Or an inside job. Sony Pictures had just happened to have had layoffs in their IT department mere weeks before all this happened.

Like Rogen or hate Rogen, his last two films are far outside of the box of the usual studio-produced comedy. He's taking the monetary opportunities given to him and launching INSANE projects as a result. Good for him.

And if somebody in Korea made a movie about how two bumbling idiot Koreans were constantly fucking up an Obama assassination attempt because they're too fucking stupid to figure out how to do it, no one would care here. Why? Because it makes the assassins look like the inept buffoons. Also, because it's Korea.

w/o having seen the movie i expect the plot to turn on the idea that the 2 lead characters are so stupid they can't get the job done. and the comedy ensues from their bungled attempt(s). i don't expect them to be successful. i expect the joke to be on them more than it's on N. Korea or the Dear Leader. though i do expect jokes on North Korea and Kim Jung Whatsit.

In response to Reply # 0

Team America was *properly* offensive to Kim Jong Il... even had a borderline racist song making him out to be a tragic little loner... before he's impaled and revealed to be an alien.

South Park: BLU not only had a at-the-time-current world leader eaten by wild boars, he was depicted living in Hell as a masochistic, homosexual deviant even Satan found a bit too evil.

This doesn't strike me as really being about a reason, it's about discovering the ability to do something and then grafting any available reason onto the back of it.

In response to Reply # 65

making it less likely for the awareness of them to spread worldwide until just before or after the fact (N. Korea did ask the Czech Republic to ban "Team America"). "South Park" in particular was released in 1999, when the Internet was still fairly primitive. N. Korea's been pissed about "The Interview" all year.

Both of those films also lack live actors as well.

It could also simply point to differences of taste/tolerance between Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un and /or those they surround themselves with.

Pretty much how South Park is able to get away with everything they do, They go in on EVERYTHING - religions, races, politicians, everything.

South Park has history on its side.....They are a spoofing machine...

Plus people are underestimating the new power of social media...When those South Park movies/shows were released Twitter, Instangram, ect were not heavy in the game....The world has become a much smaller place now...That matters when you release a film in which the only premise is to kill the leader of any country....

That said, threatening to kill people in a movie theater for seeing a film is bat shit evil....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

as being a movie about the US assassinating a sitting head of state. Especially when described to people in that country. They aren't gonna care about the nuance of slapstick comedy vs. a serious pic, and if it's banned they won't be able to see it to make that distinction.

To be clear, I don't have any problem with them doing the movie. I actually think it'll be funny as heck and plan on seeing it. It's not like I'm clutching pearls looking at the trailer or that I'm offended myself. But yeah - I was shocked that Sony, an Asian company, would green light a movie that may seem as offensive to an entire Asian country.

it's a F'n movie

I don't know if there are any film geeks here

had a dream about him becoming president starting a nuclear war. That's not what the OP was talking about AT ALL.

The OP said we wouldn't be cool with another country making a movie about killing Obama. A real president, currently in office. Made by another country.

Yeah I'm sure there are plenty of movies about killing heads of state, but about a real life, sitting head of state?

If you aren't seeing the difference then...

i think that cartoon shouldn't have been published not b/c of the terror threat but b/c French Muslims are so stepped on over there in Europe that it's wrong, morally wrong, for Charlie to add to their oppression w/those puerile cartoons. the publishing of the cartoons sickened me for that reason. i see the publishing as part of the nakedly passive aggressive effort to make life so miserable for the Muslims that they'll agree to leave. we've seen that kind of treatment of immigrants before - like here in the USA back in the day where laws have been used to basically criminalize the immigrants' way of life so that they're miserable and will just leave.

i have not ever said that the cartoons shouldn't have published due to the threat of violence. other ppl said that, not me.

I don't see why a paper that tries to offend just about everyone equally should be held to account for only one of those groups simply because they happen to live in a country that doesn't treat that group fairly.

Muslims aren't held out for special attention while other faiths are ignored, so I'm not sure what the basis is for saying that the publishing as part of the nakedly passive aggressive effort to make life so miserable for the Muslims that they'll agree to leave.

If you're saying that these cartoons would be acceptable in a context where Muslims aren't so oppressed, I don't know how those cartoons are therefore wrong. It's different to the f word for gays or the n word. Me saying either of those words is wrong no matter the context. However, if a cartoon is only wrong for me to publish if it happens to affect vulnerable people in one country even though it addresses worldwide issues, then the slope becomes slippery.

I found this article interesting and it did make me think again about my viewpoint.

Just IMO though.

Sony Cancels December Release of ‘The Interview’
Posted on Wednesday, December 17th, 2014 by Russ Fischer
The Interview pulled

Yesterday, the hackers that exposed Sony’s internal workings went a step further and issued a big threat, invoking 9/11 in a statement that promised action against theaters showing The Interview. But the Department of Homeland Security — a group that really doesn’t mess around when it comes to this sort of thing — said there was no credible information to indicate an actual threat. Sony was fairly magnanimous about the situation, saying it would allow theaters to make the decision to show the film or not, even if bookings had already been locked in.

Last night Carmike Cinemas and Bow Tie Cinemas pulled the film, and today in a precedent-setting move, the five major theater chains in the US and Canada all dropped The Interview.

Update: Sony is now considering a VOD release of the film; more info below.

Update #2: Sony has canceled the December theatrical release of The Interview. Full statement below.

The Interview Pulled From US Theater Chains
As of press time, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark, Cineplex and AMC Theatres will no longer show The Interview. The Wrap says that Arclight Cinemas will also pull the film. (Earlier this morning, the chain tweeted that no decision had yet been made about the film.)

We haven’t confirmed that the Alamo Drafthouse will continue with plans to show the film, but one primary Drafthouse employee said plans had not changed, and I can’t imagine Tim League backing down now:

Tickets are still on sale for Drafthouse theaters in Austin.

It doesn’t need to be explained that this is a terrible move. Top US officials have said there is no real threat. Now there is a precedent showing that major companies will back down in the face of even an insubstantial threat. (Did lawyers for the theater chains make this call, based on the idea that there would be culpability on the theater side in the outlandish event something did happen?)

What ramifications will this have on future films that might have political content? Don’t expect Sony to follow through on calls to release The Interview online, even though that would ensure that whoever wants to see it can do so, and simultaneously push back against the theater chains that caved today.

Update: While the idea to just throw The Interview on the internet isn’t likely to happen, Sony is now reportedly considering a “premium VOD” release plan, per Variety, which would possibly be day-and-date with the planned theatrical release. What that premium tag means for pricing is unknown at this point.

Update #2: Here’s Sony’s statement on the scrapped December release of The Interview. Given that all major theater chains in the US had already pulled the film, this was all but inevitable.

In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners’ decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers.

Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails, and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale – all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like. We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public. We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome.

165. "And it was criticized"
In response to Reply # 164

"The central conceit of Death of a President was much criticised by those who believed it exploited the subject of presidential assassination, and that by doing so, was in bad taste. Gretchen Esell of the Texas Republican Party described the subject matter saying, "I find this shocking, I find it disturbing. I don't know if there are many people in America who would want to watch something like that." Hillary Clinton, then junior United States Senator from New York, told The Journal News of Rockland, Westchester, and Putnam counties at the annual New Castle Community Day in Chappaqua that, "I think it's despicable. I think it's absolutely outrageous. That anyone would even attempt to profit on such a horrible scenario makes me sick."

Simon Finch, the co-screenwriter, replied saying that Clinton had not seen the film when she commented. The Bush administration did not comment about the film; as White House spokesperson Emily Lawrimore remarked, "We are not commenting because it doesn't dignify a response."Two U.S. cinema chains, Regal and Cinemark, refused to screen Death of a President, which was distributed by Newmarket Films in the United States. CNN and NPR also refused to broadcast advertisements for the film."

168. "your point?"
In response to Reply # 165

Was it released? Were there threats made?

The OP made a correlation drawing it to what if there was a film about assassinating a sitting US president. There was.

This isn't about people being critical. This is about an empty threat stopping the release of a film. This is a horrible precident to set. Religious groups, gun nuts... Shit anyone who disagrees with any film now know that if you say "9/11" you can conceivably shut down anything you want. Because the studios are fucking cowards.

In response to Reply # 168

They warned they were going to do it this summer and then did.

And the state dept viewed the movie and gave sony the ok to release the movie bc they decided the threats weren't credible.

That was during the summer.

So understandably now sony is taking what North Korea is saying more seriously vs what the us govt is saying...
