"High Maintenance"

it's not TV Tuesday but it's my latest obsession

It's about a weed delivery guy in NYC and his clients

Here are the free episodes:
http://www.helpingyoumaintain.com/episodes

The latest, longer episodes are on their vimeo page and are for pay but worth it.

It's funny how weed solved that couple's problem. It balanced them by making the wife more mellow and giving the husband more courage.

Easily the best webseries I've ever seen (which I guess isn't that big of an achievement). Also easily the best depiction of the Brooklyn that I live adjacent too (as a black person, I ain't really my world but it is the closest depiction of these folks I see all around me).

Cool thing is I don't have a favorite. They were so consistent in quality even though the story's were wildly different and you can see the production rise as the story went on (ok maybe the ep with the assholes was my favorite).

The strong quality consistency makes me thing they could easily do a tv series.

Maybe Hannibal's story was the weakest because it was the hardest to relate to (the normally chill easy going drug dealer character was uncharacteristically chatty and not very cool). Still funny ep though.

I loved the twist of the cross dressing ep.

Loved how they take simple premises (dating a guy who turns out to be in a loon), and can wrap an engage 15 minute story around it.

Loved seeing the crossover of characters appearing in different episodes.

You can almost tell the director was a casting agent because every ep was perfectly casts.

One question: What happened at the end of the ep with the doctor? didn't quite understand what was going on.

Thanks for the reco. YOu've got good taste.

And it was showing that after that reveal, he had eaten a spacecake. So he was going on call slightly asleep with the effects of the space cake.

I'm saying it didn't feel short (like a snack), instead, it felt like a full meal. Meaning I was full and satisfied.

Same quality (or Better)?

Any more black people?

BTW, I am thinking of doing a short like one of these. I think set at an open house. Microconflict between a moneyed prospective buyer and renter being forced out.

Dude buys a brownstone. All the tenants have to go.

One tenant is a long time renter and a hottie and they sort of hit it off. She moves out but they date a little. She notices that he changes something she loved about the place.

While their relationship is heating up she announces she is moving back home to Ohio because she can't afford to live in BK anymore. There is an awkward moment because they both know that he could let her stay in the place he was renting but he is renting it out for much more. Haven't dated long enough to serious entertain moving in.

And it just ends.

7 minutes. My cousin is moving out soon and I think I could shoot in her place.

They were good and enjoyed them but I think longer episodes don't necessarily make for better episodes.

I think black people are kind of a weak spot for them. First episode where it felt like they were using "Actors".

Didn't like the Stomp woman one. Too cartoonish.

Liked the Ditmas park one, teacher ep and the group trip episode.

Worth the 8 bucks.

I don't hate these at all. I like them a lot. But there was something magical about the 5-10 minute sweet spot of the early episodes.

I felt the dirmas park episode was too rambly. Coulda been 3 minutes shorter.

Also I love the retread characters BUT I don't wanna see them in back to back episodes. It's fine to weave them into different stories cause people are interconnected.

But I was a but disappointed with teacher ep then ditmas b2b.

Like I wouldn't have even minded if that was 5-6 eps later. I'm sure it's probably easier for production purposes but just my opinion. Another thing that made the show magical early in for me was all the different short stories.

Again not necessarily a critique cause I'm still highly recommending this. It's still an A in my book. I'm just getting my Asian dad meme on.

In response to Reply # 0

It could've been far better. But I like how they didn't make it a "Black" episode. Any ethnic couple could've played the black couple.

But I dunno, a black couple in Fort Greene? I think I would've prefer a "Black" episode where blacks are dealing with gentrification? or at least something not so far removed from a "Black" episode.

And I hated the nightmare scene. I would've preferred the episode stayed in the cam-docu style.

The thing is I worked for a survialist so I thought that aspect was kind of interesting, but I couldn't really picture a black survivalist.

It was the only episode where I felt like it was actors "acting".

I thought the kids would be wow'd by the asexual teacher' tricks and stunts, but instead it didn't have a happy ending. The ep showed how frustrating it is being an inner city teacher.

And lmao @ the female teacher laughing at the asexual teacher. Some teachers got it bad.

I just called it Flatbush/Church Ave. I spent a large part of my childhood over there.

It's funny how every few blocks in Brooklyn is called a neighborhood now. I only referenced major/big neighborhoods.

First story was pretty good. I fell asleep on the second story of the first episode. Maybe I was super tired rather than a commentary on teh quality of the episode. I could have done without the butt sex though.

It the second story was an interesting choice for a first episode. It kind of assumes folks saw the webseries and i don't think it would help to build a new following who had not seen the web series.

And I was hoping for a different ending.

I don't think you had to watch the web series to get it. The assholes stand alone as characters. Obviously if you saw the web series you get more context but it was far from necessary.

What I liked about that storyline was they made the guy the connection but showed he doesn't have to be in an episode. It's less about him and his deliveries and more about the stories of the people who use him

One of my least favorite episodes of the series and a really confusing choice for the first HBO episode. No idea why they chose to focus the story on the two most deplorable characters of the show. It would have been better following the dealer around for a few deals. If this was the first episode I watched I'm not sure I'd be back for the second.

Hoping the next episode is better. When this show focuses on the right characters with interesting storylines it's very entertaining.

I was referring to the gay guy and his female friend. They're such horrible people, which clearly is part of the joke, but I just can't stand them for 20 minutes straight. Out of all the interesting characters shown during the web series, I was disappointed the premiere focused so heavily on those two.

But the more he went, the more he realized that he didn't have to be the bundle of stereotypes that he was, and that he didn't WANT to be a drunken, druggy asshole anymore.

That monologue was real. And then his codependent had to go and fuck it up.

Decent story, I just question the whole format they are going with now of having these characters as recurring characters.

I was a big fan of the weed dealer being the primary character and having recurring characters only to the extent that a character introduced in one episode will later have a full episode later.

The idea of limiting the series to mainly only the folks they've introduced so far sounds like it will get old quick. I loved the assholes the first episodes but I really didn't need their backstory or an update on how they are doing now.

Not sure how this series is going to turn out.

While the original web series def. got dark, that was probably the darkest the show's ever gotten with the second story and they pulled it off. Shit almost felt like a Twilight Zone episode. While I understand how it was off tonally from the rest of the show (and would be jarring as a new viewer), I thought it was great television.

The first story also had a great twist to help make the entire proceedings not entire all doom and gloom.

I remember it was this post over more than a year ago that sparked the idea of doing my own web series. Funny to see that my very first idea for this was one of the episodes I stuck with and shot.

Hope to get to #60 in a few weeks.

We aren't ready to go public yet...but Check out the sizzle.

My girlfriend and I were both pretty close to bailing on it during the opening scene, but once he left and they dropped their charade we were hooked and immediately queued up episode 2. first half reminded me of an episode of the original UK version of Skins, which was awesome, and the second half we were laughing hysterically throughout.

we were a little caught off guard that weed had so little to do with it, from the trailer we thought it was going to be some lighthearted weed delivery comedy that might get into some Half Baked sobering up territory but this show is totally different.

she said it reminds her a bit of how she feels when she watches Girls, except that it's actually interested in addressing an entire era of a section of the city rather than four girls' insular lives with each other.

It has a past character but man they told so many stories well in a short amount of time. The authenticity of the characters and dialogue both in English and Chinese....

This ep made me believe why they got paid the HBO money and how they can use that bigger budgets to tel awesome stories.

That ep had a bit of everything for me

i gotta watch04 again but how did they get those stories told with so much depth in that short time span? I feel like this season they've experimented with several tropes on how to do the show and episode 4 really works.

A good amount of scenes with the guy to this things together but then 2 seemingly disparate stories with a similar theme (parent/child relationships) tied together by some random NY thing. It also seamlessly combined new and old characters.

It just all of a sudden feels like a random collection of New York stories without the narrative glue of the weed guy and not the humor of the early episodes.

episode 4 seemed like a weird handoff between the Asian folks story (which I wanted to see more of) and the old raver (which I wasn't so interested in) by using the smartphone class instead of the weed guy (did the Asian people story have any weed connection?)

I don't know if the show changed or if it's the nature of anthology series but it kind of feels like no matter how good any individual story is, there isn't a strong compelling reason to tune back in next week.

well, as someone who only became aware of this show through HBO, I find this assessment a little odd. When we don't have time to watch a full show of anything we've been grinding through the web series shorts and I think this is exactly the show they were trying to make on Youtube, they just didn't have the budget.

I'm not as hype on Episode 4 as others though, I thought it was a really fun episode (honestly this show is quickly becoming my favorite on TV) but I agree that the handoff between the two stories was roughshod and made the theme of the episode a little vague. But overall I find the writing to be as clever as Lena Dunham imagines her writing is and the character work to be exceptional week in and week out.

This show strikes a really inspiring balance between being deeply emotional and profoundly funny that I'm pretty fucking bummed out tonight is already the last episode of the season.

Thats what it always was -- a random collection of NY stories. The weed guy still is the glue.

>episode 4 seemed like a weird handoff between the Asian folks

>I wasn't so interested in) by using the smartphone class
>instead of the weed guy (did the Asian people story have any

They didnt have any weed connection in terms of smoking weed. But early in the episode weed guy bumps into them as they are collecting the recycling from the couple's apartment--after he takes out the trash. That was the same trash that they asked him to take out that contains the tick they were so upset about. So the story connected there and again at the Iphone class hand off. To me that was awesome. I caught the first connection right away and the iphone class one wasnt as obvious. I think cause I was interrupted around that time when watching the first time.

So it seems like the formula they are experimenting with to some extent is
half comedic/half dramatic, half old characters/half new. they are using different set ups to achieve this.

I love how the wife in this episode was the uptight assistant from episode 1 of the web series, and now you see her as the uptight boss.

>

I dont know if there ever was a compelling reason to tune back next week in the web series and you liked the stories. The nature of the web series --especially since most people caught onto it later was different. You didnt have to wait for weekly episodes. You could watch all these short vignettes at your leisure and early on..some of them were really short.

I think theyre doing a great job of telling NY stories which is the heart of the show, with a heart and without too much pretentiousness, which is hard to do.

Some obvious hipster stories and some not so obvious ones like this Chinese family and the Muslim girl. Some of the nuances of that Chinese (or any immigrant) family they captured so well. I think thats why I loved it. It really reminded me There are small details in that episode that a lot of other shows wouldve missed, that they noted in 15 minutes.

One of the other small nuances when girl is texting with her dad and you see her typing and erasing stuff and changing it. That to me was really cool to se that subtlety of texting. Its been done before but often times people get lazy with texting on screen and just have the messages pop up, they included that nuance of a make up via text that I really appreciated.

its trying to rationalize why I don't enjoy it as much.

Anthologies are super tricky. If the only thing that brings you back are the qaulities of the stories then eventually the quality inevitable runs out or becomes spotty.

Like I liked Key & Peele alot. But as sketched comedy I didn't have to watch each week. I just waited for the sketches people talked about and went and watched those.

Meanwhile The Walking Dead had long periods of bad episodes but I had to keep tuning back just because I wanted to keep up with the story and see how the story progressed.

I did love alot of little notes of High Maintanence HBO (like you mentioned the texting, with the erasing and re-writing) but it never gelled for me as TV I had to see.

I felt that way about the web series but alot of that was trying to figure out what the series really was. There use to be alot of surprises with the series. Now I can see the format.

BTW, I will admit that I am over analyzing the format because I am working on an anthology and I am really starting to feel the limitations of the format.

and I don't care at all how closely it's sticking to the format or formula or not

prevalence of the guy could be whatever

that's not it

but something about its voice, or the audience it's presenting for, or something

imma still watch of course, cause it's "good" and I'm reluctantly a TV guy

but idk it's not sticking for me

but i loved the dog ep and not tick lol so clearly i'm in the minority anyway

It's my favorite of the HBO version so far. Hope the rest of the season is just as dope.

First episode lived up to it. Pretty good.

I didnt realize Ben abd Katja had broken up. I read some article that kinda blamed the breakup for the darkness or weirdness of season 1 HBO.

I had a similar day. I fell asleep early at like 9Pm putting my daughter to sleep thinking Hilary had it in the bag. Woke up at 2am on some "Oh shit" and the next day at work was a bit of a dreammy blur.

I think there was some kind of uncertainty about all of that. I mean life just went on, but people kinda wondered will my therapist be in, should I show up to work, will things be open? Maybe it was a liberal NYC thing, but for a lot of people it seemed to feel like the end of the world.

Of course the way they wrote and filmed the episode the beauty of it -- is that it could be anything and not just the trump election.

It was okay but didn't really blow me away.

Anthologies are hard to maintain momentum. Hard to be glued to a program if I not trying to follow characters.

The second part also seems like it was headed towards a retread of the first time we met those two women who were dealing with an unwanted animal.

I don't know. Enjoyable but not must see tv.

Ive really enjoyed this season.

I still like the regular format of storytelling rather than the 2 episodes we had about "the guy". It was interesting to see how they told their own story through the 1st guy episode.

I still havent seen last week's but yea-- still some of the tightest storytelling on TV

They worked their divorce into the show.

I had the subtitles on and Beth called The Guy "Ben", so I guess that's his name.

Also, really sad that The Guy is forever lonely. Beth is getting her shit together and just as things are looking up for him, the RV breaks down.

And the lyrics to the song over the credits makes it sadder.
