"There needs to be a "where are they now" show for rappers"
Thu Dec-11-14 11:49 AM by double negative

Can we get VH1 to spearhead this one?

I was listening to Special Ed's 'got it made' last night and I tried to look up mr. Edward Archer and came up on goose eggs.

Seriously how weird/sad/interesting would it be to see what old and new rappers who have faded from center stage are up to post limelight?

I mean, I could just go down to the UPS distro center and start interviewing folks but I'm lazy

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I'm sure there's a grip that are still doing shows here and there of their old music or haven't come to terms that the limelight has faded and are "in the studio" working on music. But what about those that left rap altogether and moved on to other things? Like, what are the guys from South Central Cartel up to these days? Opening juice bars? Programming?

Streets won't let me chill.

But OKP completely disappointed me!!

Between all of us here, I feel like we could cover 50% of the artists out there....most of us know a few personally, or live in cities where we know what these "has been" types are up to.

Like...how the Asian dude from Smilez n Southstar became a big DJ in Orlando.

How Thrill Da Playa from 69 Boyz lives in Tallahassee and promotes clubs, while still making local semi-hits.

How AMG and 2nd II None still make new music and perform all the time at hood spots, still throwing shots at Quik.

How Casanova Rud is on Twitter and still makes new shit every week.

And I always wonder where most of these folks work, bc they HAVE TO have day jobs. They would be in jail like a lot of others if they were actually (still) in the drug game.

I remember him talking about releasing a book to accompany "Don't quit your day job" on him leaving rap, his cousin's continued success, and working a 9-5. I would have picked it up. But I think rapper's egos keep them from humbling themselves and being that honest. Like what will happen to Rich Homie Quan once he falls out of favor? With a name like that, if you're working the desk at SunTrust, you've painted yourself into a corner and can't help but be a bit embarrassed.

I think it's best to let folks fall into obscurity...

I mean it can't feel good to be like Skee-lo having a huge hit but working as a security guard at cedars...

for 90% of the folks who had something popping and aren't.. nothing they are doing now is probably noteworthy enough and I am sure rather depressing considering where they were..

Nah.. people still believe (That won't be me)

Maybe shit is personal for me because I (being very much in the second phase of my career) see where a lot of the older cats end up.

even that skee-lo article linked.. like man the come down is never fun..

I'd rather cats just do that in private

don't have much in the way of a formal education. If they don't leave the rap game with a mint, what type of jobs are they really qualified to do? Most of these stories are going to be pretty depressing. That's not even mentioning the ones who generated decent money, but signed really bad contracts.

I saw Meth and Red perform in Raleigh 2 weeks ago and they rocked it. His voice was clear and energy was strong. BReal performed too and killed his set.

Od course they said Blackout 3 is coming out in '15, but I ain't holding my breath.

The tour was pretty extensive so I'm glad they are able to command crowds like that.

"D-Nice's True Hip-Hop Stories." He interviewed rappers about one of their biggest tracks, and got the stories about how they created them/inspiration for the lyrics, etc. In almost every case, they also talked about what they were up to today.

Here's the youtube channel. Don't know if they're all still on there:

I remember I bumped into Books from Das EFX a couple years ago and I was asking where can I catch them in concert. He was telling us that they had just gotten back from Copenhagen and was about to head out to Germany in a few days and how they book plenty gigs overseas and only a few here and there here in the states.
