"let's all think of the children. "

i have been accused of hating children.
the truth is, i don't.

i actually like kids.

what i DO hate, though, is the way out society conceptualizes children.
and society is very schizophrenic about kids, generally.

on one level, the children are seen as innocent.
uncorrupted, innocent beings that represent all that was good about humanity
before we allegedly fell from God's grace.

children represent a world before the evils of sex.
a world before the dangers of drugs.
a world that is completely detached from the evils of the adult world.

then again, we-- as a society-- hate children.
hate them.

because they are out here in the streets.
they're cussing before they even get to college.
they hang out together and form gangs.
they listen to subversive music.

and we really need to get them under control
because all will be lost if we don't punish them harshly and severely
for moving too soon in the adult world.

kid smokes pot?
lock them up, throw them away.

kid talks back to a teacher?
put them in special classes.

kid won't pull up their pants?
well it's no wonder they get harnessed by cops.
these kids deserve that.

the truth is "the children" are neither infaliable nor evil.
they are people. super dumb little people.
they fuck up sometimes, and they get some things right.

and rest assured, they had some inchoate thoughts about sex before they saw it on TV.
because humans generally are preoccupied with sex.

rest assured, some kids had interest in drugs.
not most of them. but some of them.

putting the kid in prison won't make that go away.

please don't lock this post because i am talking about a broader point here.

the way we think of the children is ridiculous,
and the people that suffer most because of our draconian methods of protecting them are, ironically, children.

how many bad ideas can we justify in the name we of the children?

any law with a cloying name that was passed because a white girl died?
artistic censorship?
oppressing gay ppl?
the war on drugs?

none of this stuff is helping the children.
I don't care how many pictures of "crack babies" you show me,
it can't justify this.

I don't care how many pictures of kids wearing matching clothes for
gang colors, it can't justify this.

seriously, every time i hear somebody say "think of the children,"
i almost think that i hate kids.

but i don't.

the kids are alright.

i just hate the ppl that claim to think about them when they want to
get their dumb laws passed.

"think of the children" is just as grating as "support the troops."

the phrase helps no one.

age bracket wise.
I submit....once you become a teen...you are NOT a child.
You are a teen...
And I detest when people refer to teens as children.
They aren't.
stop that.

litterally, your brain cannot weigh cause and effect that well when you are young.
that's why I was running up credit card bills when i was in college
and i can keep a budget and pay an insurance bill on time now that i am like 31.

but for the sake of argument, since we are talking about legal shit,
let's say 18.

if you are below 18, you should not be treated by the system as an adult.
because you aren't.

not legally. not neurologically. not at all.

>It's a real thing. They are not children.

get arrested for smoking pot at 15?
have fun explaining that to future employers when you are 30.

kids do dumb shit.
which makes sense. adult ppl are stupid and kids are stupider versions of adults.

so we really need to reevaluate how we treat our children.
we should want to provide environments where they can make mistakes
and not pay for them for the rest of their adult lives.

if we are really thinking about "the children,"
that's what we'd do.

but ppl care about "the children" the same way ppl care about "the troops."

which is to say, they don't-- unless they are trying to score
cheap points in a political argument.

getting mad every time "the children" see something that
reminds them that gay ppl exist.

going on tirades about the bad fashion choices of children.

hand wringing about how vulgar music is "these days."

and let me be clear.

when ppl say "the children,"
they usually mean white children-- who get to do things with
"youthful indiscretion until 5 yrs after college.

negros have to be adults right away.
you see the result.

this post is rambling but i am dead serious.

"think of the children" needs to stop being a way to shut down an argument.
the ppl that say it ain't thinking of the children.

you are either old and forgot what being a kid was like,
or you were lame as shit as a kid and are jealous of kids doing what you wanted to do but never had the guts to do.

here's a partial list of things all kids have always tried to do since kids have been a thing:

use English in a way that irritates old ppl.
try to get up on some hoes.
listen to music old ppl hate.
cuss.
drink and get high or hang out with ppl that do.
talk back to adults.
fight.

if you cite and of these reasons as a rationale for why we need
a law or a new policy, the law you are talking about is probably stupid
and should be publicly ridiculed.

I had this debate at the office. with a guy younger than me and another older than me. both basically saying 'we' were different. I said no, we weren't.

people tend to use their own limited experience to say how life was for their entire generation. they gotta see the flows in that.

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

i know this ain't about kids but fuck it, i'm ranting now.

ATTN OLD PPL:

millennials don't hop from job to job because they are unfocused.
they hop from job to job because the job market is terrible.

they don't rack up student load debt because they are scatterbrained.
it's because they need a college degree and a job.

they aren't working multiple fast food jobs because they are lazy.
they have to make rent, and no one job is letting them do that.

the only reason YOU were able to go to the ford plant and retire from that job
was because there was a time when you COULD do that and live a life.

adults from back in the day aren't better than adults now.
humans haven't changed-- our society did.

help them or shut the fuck up.
millinieals are trying to make it do what it do.

the negro teen is a menace that must be dealt with quickly.

that is part of the problem for sure.
but it wasn't the entire point of my post.

our society reveres and at the same time hates its children.
which one you do at the moment depends on which political angle your pushing at the time.

either way, anybody talking about "the children" is usually full of shit.
their ideas should be shouted out of the public discourse.

A bunch of black kids doing the exact same shit in Florida to a white star whose white wife (Ray’s wife is half white, but favors her Latina side if I recall correctly) was home with their white children and there’s no fucking way they wind up in some diversion program as a slap on the wrist. Further, the public outrage would have been considerably different. They’d have been all manner of thugs and gangbangers and troublemakers.

Their identities would have been plastered everywhere, social media accounts scrutinized to death, and their harsher punishments justified by every pundit Faux News had on staff.

There’s an awful lot of denial about the way these situations are dealt with along racial lines, but I think you’re dead on.

there was a girl that was killed on the south side of Chicago last week.
do you even know her name?

you don't, do you?
but i do.

i looked it up before i did this interview.

maybe if black ppl would be more concerned about the innocent children dying
instead of the thug children we keep killing or locking up,
they wouldn't have these problems.

post-racial.
pull up your pants.
Obama is a socialist.

our time is up.

thanks for coming on the program.

and that's pretty much how it goes if you mention racial disparities
in the criminal justice system.
