"dog day afternoon (OkayDogOwners): 12/11/14..."
Thu Dec-11-14 03:46 PM by CyrenYoung

{this series is dedicated to any questions/comments/concerns you might have about dogs}

*after today, this weekly series will be posted exclusively in the new Organix forum*

**please note** its imperative to include:

breed (if its mixed, please try to provide as much info as possible regarding)
age
sex
a brief history of your ownership (original owner, rescue, etc.)

along with general info, i'll try to offer at least 1 specific topic of discussion for each post in this series.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

*today's agenda: micro chip location

yesterday afternoon, i received a distress alert from a friend (and fellow okp) about a lost pup that escaped a gated yard. anyone who's ever lost a pet knows how agonizing and helpless this situation can be. after posting notices in their neighborhood (and on instagram), all they could really do was canvas the area, hoping someone might've seen the dog.

well, this morning they found him!

a neighbor saw the dog and took him in. unfortunately, the pup wasn't wearing a collar/tags. however, someone saw the owners posting up flyers this morning and alerted them. now that the family has been reunited, the 1st thing i mentioned to them was micro chipping their pup.

i actually encourage every responsible pet owner to strongly consider micro chipping. its a simple, inexpensive method of tracking your pet that can save you hours of stress.

microchipping your pet involves implanting a chip with your contact information in your pet’s shoulder area. the chip can be read by scanner at most animal shelters and is an excellent way to reunite lost pets with their families—as long as you keep providing the chip company with updated information.

the ASPCA strongly recommends that pet owners consider microchipping their pets as a permanent form of identification, in addition to a current dog license and identification tag. you may also wish to discuss microchipping with your local veterinarian.

visit the websites of the following companies that provide microchipping services:

or that its a post about helping pet owners?

1)why does my dog spin in circles before going up steps? is it to gain momentum?

2)why is my dog a cock block? If he hears me and my wife getting intimate, he'll start going buck. If I make a "uh" sexual noise, he will come running and barking. He hates the basement (bc that's where we keep him when we are not home) but if i'm down there and making an 'uh' noise he'll come running.

Last night me and my wife wear on the couch watching tv and he was on the floor a few feet from us when i love scene was on tv. Little guy started reacting to their noises...first he ran toward us but when he realized it wasn't us, he went searching around the room till he realized it was the tv.

whats up with that.

great post btw.

>1)why does my dog spin in circles before going up steps? is
>it to gain momentum?

the rounding ritual dates back to well before the domestication of dogs. typically done to mark territory/prep for bedding. however, this isn't normally associated with general task (like climbing stairs).

then again, we all develop habits (some, stranger than others). breed/age (also: are you the original owner)?

okay, this is hilarious (forgive me) put actually common.

dogs are territorial & protective by nature. its possible that he associates these "sounds" as a threat. sex is different in every household, and while avoiding the details of your sex life, its very possible that your dog is mistaking sounds of passion for sounds of distress.

its also fairly obvious that he now associates the basement with "punishment." confining him to the basement during sex might appear to be a quick fix, but it doesn't correct misbehavior.

you might want to refer to the basics of dog training:

routine
boundaries
commands
correction
reward
diet
safety

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=12663304&mesg_id=12663304&listing_type=search#12664191

correcting misbehavior takes time, effort, & discipline.

near amish town pa. I think he spent most out of their house so i don't think there were much steps. He was scared of steps when we first got him but eventually he conquered it.

as far as the sex stuff i agree that he may associate the sounds with distress/danger or overall roughness. As far as the basement my point was that he will never go in the basement on his own. Even if we are down there and he wants to be with us, he'll stay at the top and cry/whimper. Unless, he hears me go 'uh', then he'll come charging lol.

..who's still working on his fear of steps.

*is your basement stairwell open? if so, that might have something to do with his current aversion.

at least you know that his fears won't prevent him from protecting his family. sounds like a great pup.

regarding the basement steps yes, but he does the spinaround thing around any type of steps as long as there are more than a couple.

..i only ask because open staircases can often be a deterrent for people (and pets) with a fear of heights.

*it sounds like his rounding is habitual (possibly comforting). no cause for alarm, but certainly something to keep an eye on. there are cases of dogs with abnormal rounding behavior that becomes a negative situation for them & their families.

also: does he circle before going downstairs as well?

and when we first got him, he had to conquer each set of stairs individually. like he conquered the main steps first but was scared of the backyard steps...which were only 4 steps but steeper and no riser. Then when he was fine with that, he was scared of the basement stpes also with no riser. Then he had to conquer the backyard steps that lead to the basement riser, but steep. Still does the spinning routine on our steps and any other steps he encounters.

He also does the rounding like you mentioned before, when he's about to lay down.

No, not when he goes downstairs...only upstairs.

every species on this planet is effected by magnetism. some studies have shown that some (not all) dogs prefer to poop with at least one end facing north/south.

circling/rounding is something completely different. it allows the dog to not only stamp his chosen territory, but to prep the area for comfort. *its also common for dogs to scrape that particular area (they do this in the wild to fluff/prepare/soften the ground).

*happy to hear your pup is microchipped!

this is a prime example of why its a bad idea to yell at your dog. we all make mistakes (including our pets). since they are people pleasers, its easy to guilt them into submission by raising our voice. unfortunately, they won't always be able to discern between different emotional outburst. it appears that you've conditioned your dog to associate yelling with his bad behavior. the best thing you can do for you AND your dog is to avoid yelling at him.

corrective behavior doesn't have to involve yelling. time, effort, discipline, & patience will do wonders for you and your dog.

in the meantime, you might wanna take it easy while watchin' your favorite teams LOL.

..humans are prone to yelling (esp when excited).

dogs are sensitive and most are natural people pleasers. as such, they are acutely aware of our emotional outburst.

when i yell while watching sports, my dog doesn't cower or worry that he's in trouble because i never yell at him in response to bad behavior.

Trying to teach my dog how to fetch.

I know in the past that I've had dogs who I've just resigned myself to saying "he doesn't fetch."

But I feel like there *must* be a way to communicate to your dog, "Go get this thing, bring it back, and I'll give you a treat." Right? Maybe I'm just imposing the way the human brain works to the way the dog brain works. But I've taught him some other things that he initially adamantly refused to do (taking the stairs), so I can't imagine that fetch is completely impossible to old dogs unfamiliar with the game, despite the old saying.

Anyone have any experience with this? Or with training older dogs in general? Mr. D has responded to most training, and we're still working on certain things pertaining to fear he carries from his past (a different post), but I could always use pointers from owners familiar with adopting older dogs.

find something the dog likes, treat/chew toy, etc, and use that as motivation to get him to do what you want. patience is the big thing. my dog might it right this this, but the next few, he doesn't. I try to make sure I'm call with each mess up.

*i should've stated that its imperative to list certain specifics about your dog:

breed (if its a mix, please try to provide as much bkgrd as possible)
age
sex

the truth is: some dogs don't fetch.

every dog has a unique personality. while most dogs truly enjoy fetching, its not uncommon to find dogs that don't. while age & health can be can be deterrents, its very possible that your dog simply doesn't enjoy fetching.

you mentioned a bit of stubbornness on his part, due to his past. if you can share a bit more, that would help (feel free to hit my inbox if its private).

... it's a long story, but the short of it is we don't know anything. We know he wasn't taken care of, and it's manifested itself in a number of ways that I can get into when I'm not posting on my phone, lol. He's improving and his confidence is growing, thanks to a ton of hard work over the past year... but we're still not to total confidence and comfort yet. We're in it for the long haul though. He needs us.

The fetch thing is mostly just a way to try to give him more games to play with us, lol.

49. "Introducing a new dog to your current one"
In response to Reply # 0
Thu Dec-11-14 03:29 PM by Boogiedwn

One of our dogs passed away about two months ago and my wife is thinking about getting another dog.

Is there a good way to introduce a new dog to your current one?

When we first got my dog there were clear jealousy issues from both (our original dog and the new one). Couldn't pet one without having to pet the other (the older one would start a fight).

It eventually got better with time but still felt like sibling rivalry on a dogs level.

Now since there is only one dog, he seems to bask in all the extra attention.

Not sure if there's anyway around it but figured I'd ask.

..unfortunately, most pet owners fail to ask pertinent questions when introducing a new dog to the home they already share with a family pet.

*the following passage is from www.aspca.org.

i highly recommend that you follow this TO THE LETTER:

Introductions

Leave your current dog at home when you pick up your new dog. One of the worst things you can do is to just throw the two of them together in your car and hope for the best!
Introduce your dogs on neutral territory, like on a short walk through your neighborhood, in a nearby park or in a friend’s yard. Have two people, one to handle each dog, while keeping the dogs on leashes.
To minimize tension, try to keep the dogs’ leashes loose so that they’re not choking or feeling pressure on their throats.
Don’t force any interaction between the dogs. If the dogs ignore each other at first, or if one dog seems reluctant to interact with the other, that’s okay. Give both dogs time to get comfortable. They’ll interact when they’re ready.
Make the introduction positive and light-hearted. As the dogs sniff and get acquainted, encourage them in a happy tone of voice. At first, allow just a few seconds of sniffing. Then gently pull the dogs away from each other and let them walk around with their handlers. After a minute or two, you can lead the dogs back together and allow another several seconds of sniffing. These brief greetings help keep the dogs’ interactions calm and prevent escalation to threats or aggression. You can also interrupt their interactions with simple obedience. After a brief sniff, lead the dogs apart, ask them to sit or lie down, and then reward them with treats.
Closely observe the dogs’ body language. Their postures can help you understand what they’re feeling and whether things are going well or not. Loose body movements and muscles, relaxed open mouths, and play bows (when a dog puts his elbows on the ground and his hind end in the air) are all good signs that the two dogs feel comfortable. Stiff, slow body movements, tensed mouths or teeth-baring, growls and prolonged staring are all signs that a dog feels threatened or aggressive. If you see this type of body language, quickly lead the dogs apart to give them more distance from each other. Again, practice simple obedience with them individually for treats, and then let them interact again—but this time more briefly. Please see our Canine Body Language article for illustrations of dogs showing what various feelings look like in dog body language.
Once the dogs’ greeting behaviors have tapered off and they appear to be tolerating each other without fearful or threatening behavior, you’re ready to take them home. Before you take them inside, walk them together around your house or apartment building.
Be patient. Bringing a new dog home requires that everyone make some adjustments, especially your current pets. And it will take time for your dogs to build a comfortable relationship.

The First Couple of Weeks at Home

It’s crucial to avoid squabbles during the early stages of your dogs’ new relationship. Pick up all toys, chews, food bowls and your current dog’s favorite items. When dogs are first forming a relationship, these things can cause rivalry. These items can be reintroduced after a couple of weeks, once the dogs have started to develop a good relationship.
Give each dog his own water and food bowls, bed and toys. For the first few weeks, only give the dogs toys or chews when they’re separated in their crates or confinement areas.
Feed the dogs in completely separate areas. Pick up bowls when feeding time is over. (Some dogs will compete over bowls that recently contained food.)
Keep the dogs’ playtime and interactions brief to avoid overstimulation and overarousal, which can lead to fighting.
Confine the dogs in separate areas of your home whenever you’re away or can’t supervise their interactions.
Give your new dog his own confinement area. When the dogs are separated, it might be a good idea to let them get to know each other through a barrier, like a baby gate. Your new dog should be gated in his confinement area, and your current dog should be free to move around and visit when he wants to.
When the dogs are interacting, interrupt any growling or bullying behavior with a phrase like “Too bad,” and then quickly separate them for several minutes. Then allow them to be together again. If your dogs seem to react poorly to each other often, don’t hesitate to contact a professional who can help you, such as a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB), a board-certified veterinary behaviorist (Dip ACVB) or a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) who’s experienced in treating problems between dogs. Please see our article, Finding Professional Help, to locate a professional in your area.
Be sure to sincerely praise your dogs when they are interacting nicely.
Spend time individually with each dog. Give each of them training time with you and playtime with other dogs outside your home.
If your dogs are very different in age or energy level, be sure to give the older or less energetic one his own private space where he can enjoy rest and down time.
