No swipe because it's mostly email screencaps. But here's the tl;dr version. It's basically a case study of let it slide (c) Chris Rock. Dude tarnished his reputation and publicly embarrassed himself all over 4 bucks

This Harvard business professor got overcharged $4 due to an outdated website. The mom and pop Chinese restaurant apologizes and offers to refund him the $4.
Professor goes from 0-100 real quick. Demands $12 and reports them to the authorities.
Restaurant basically says fuck you, do what you gotta do bitch. They post the emails, and the internet gets busy trying to dig up dirt. Come to find out, dude has a pattern of doing this type of stuff.

http://www.boston.com/food-dining/restaurants/2014/12/10/there-more-edelman-did-this-before-and-worse/00mTW39jcyXb3VNHZoXEYN/story.html#comments

Feeling that the heat was about to be on, he apologized and acknowledged his dumbness:

"Many people have seen my emails with Ran Duan of Sichuan Garden restaurant in Brookline.

Having reflected on my interaction with Ran, including what I said and how I said it, it’s clear that I was very much out of line. I aspire to act with great respect and humility in dealing with others, no matter what the situation. Clearly I failed to do so. I am sorry, and I intend to do better in the future.

I have reached out to Ran and will apologize to him personally as well. "

then you would understand that the prices on the website are likely out of date. This is a fairly common occurrence, and the restaurant owner apologized and thanked him for contacting the authorities. Edelman suggested a resolution that isn't even provided for in the law and tried to bully the restaurant to honoring the non-legally binding resolution. He was petty and acted in bad faith.

Also, there is another element here that may be lost on people who do not hold professional positions within a community, but people should really behave in a professional and courteous manner when interacting with local businesses, and Edelman has learned that important lesson. This restaruant has been around for awhile and in a cutthroat culinary environment like Boston, that means that the community appreciates their food and service (as evidenced by the outpour of support for the restaurant: http://www.boston.com/food-dining/restaurants/2014/12/10/sichuan-garden-overwhelmed-outpouring-support/C3EF1swmLDlWAzAb1StLlO/story.html?p1=trending_article_page_4.) Considering that, he could have raised his grievance with the restaurant in a much more courteous fashion, but he decided to be a bully over $4, and while you may find this behavior appealing, most people with a sense of class and decorum will not.

The business apologised and offered to make amends in a reasonable fashion. They acted with class and decorum, he did not. Birds of a feather will flock together when taking his side on this one. Them and racists.

And as long as the owner is prepared to adjust the bill at the counter and fix the menu I don't see the problem.

We have a law in NZ around this called the Fair Trading Act, and it doesn't get into anything punitive for something as small as this.

Just IMO though.

I was an Executive Escalation Manager at a company and one of the issues that we made sure was always correct was the information that we presented on our Website. And if there was any issues I made sure that the E-Commerce Group and Web Group rectified the matter quickly and made sure that the customer was satisfied above and beyond their expectations.

That Restaurant was knowingly operating a site with out of date information and still charging customer's even though they knew the prices were wrong.

You would not allow a store, price an item for $4.00, and let them charge you $6.00 when you get to the register. Or let them say "Oh sorry that price is wrong, we have not changed the stickers yet."

GTHOH. The restaurant owner was stealing from customers and he knew that fact.

The rising prices of food has nothing to do with the matter. If you run a business then you need to run it with quality checks and be on top of your game.

When you do pricing, you have to plan and that means that you update menus and your website at the same time.

What kind of nonsense is this.

When confronted with the mistake, the owner apologised and offered to make restitution in a reasonable fashion with a polite manner. It doesn't take the compassion of Jesus to be able to forgive and let go from there.

And the fact that you cite your insignificant work experience demonstrates that you don't appreciate the broader issue of cultivating community relations. The restaurant owner agreed that the prices should be up to date and stated that he will await further notice from the appropriate authorities. The owner obviously cares, and he maintained a courteous tone throughout all of the emails, even when Edelman suggested resolutions that are not mandated by law. That's why people support the restaurant, and that is why Edelman had to issue a public apology and back off the issue. You completely misread this situation, and frankly, your ignorance on this point is embarrassing.

>embarrassing.

People who are ignorant of the challenges of being a small business owner just won't get it. It's a shame they'll speak from that place of ignorance to try to bring punitive consequences on situations they don't understand at all. When an apology and restitution aren't enough there's something terribly wrong with the spirit behind the criticism.

Just IMO though.

by updating the website. But Prof didn't care. He wanted to punish them.

The restaurant was in the wrong no doubt
I doubt the restaurant was purposely skimming a few dollars per order. They are simply a small biz that overlooked something pretty small. And it seemed like this Guy wanted to shut them down over it

Quality Service would have dictated that the business would have admitted the issue, reimburse the customer the correct amount from the beginning. No, the business still tried short the customer $1 (should have been $4 and not $3).

And the the restaurant owner tried to lie about the locations and pricing differences, and a disclaimer that didn't exist.

That restaurant knew that it was cheating people for years. And a customer caught them in the act. So why is the customer being made out to be the bad guy?

They did a whole episode on her finding out a pizza shop they'd been going to for years was automatically charging a gratuity and she'd been double-tipping the entire time. She went on a rampage and boycotted the place while the family just wanted to let it go so they could get back to enjoying their favorite pizza.

My grandfather had a lawyer for a neighbor, he was always asking for help with something around his house and my grandfather is pretty handy so he'd always lend a hand. One time my grandmother had a short convo with him and asked a him a couple of simple legal questions, a week later he sent her a bill.
