"Science of dat 'cism (infograph) b/w The devil's in the comment section"

Infographic time - http://www.motherjones.com/files/Race_630_Racist2.jpg.jpeg

Whole piece is right here - http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2014/11/science-of-racism-prejudice

Plenty worth discussion there.

b/w

But man alive seriously, if you want to understand America you can pretty much click any fucking story, scroll down to the comments section and BAM!! There it is - America.

Whenever you have hope that maybe we can turn this bitch around, go find a lovely story on ABC, or CNN, or your local news, whatever, shit could be about how there's a storm coming tomorrow. Scroll down to the comments and sure enough you'll get some "The storm is god's answer to OBAMA!!"

Random tengential addendum: "The Audacity of Hope" - tongue in cheek or no?

I heard there is a ton of land in Maine for sale. Might run away to there. Interestingly enough-- how many scientists and psychologists are biased? This almost reads like "Science says it ok".

>This almost reads like "Science says

I think one of the things that it's lacking is the accounting for nurture. There's all of this effort to show the inherent nature of the phenomena but it doesn't really utilize how these ideas are reinforced by social factors.

This I think is the reason they have problems on the solution side of things because they can test isolated situations to get some decent results but you have to address the social aspect and recognize how that is actually preying on the psychological things at play.

6. "what?"

no.

this is exactly what we need.
not this article, per se.

but ppl need to be aware of the research because it lets us know what we are up against when we talk about racism.

right now, you can't mention racism without allies thinking you are making
a value judgment on them as a person.

this science says that the bias is unconscious,
that it can be changed with effort,
and that it doesn't come from your personal, conscious feeling about black ppl--
instead it comes from socialized implicit biases planted in you by a system
that was designed to perpetuate racism and keep it invisible.

we need to find ways to take race out of the way we talk about race, to some degree.
(why do you think Obama passed the ACA without mentioning how much it helped black folks?)

i like the angle of talking about a militarized police force instead of a
war on black life.

because anti-authority white ppl can relate to not wanting the swat team for cops.

at 13 percent of the population, we can't make changes
if ppl that could be allies get defensive when we mention the problem.

being aware of this research is critical.
it helps is understand how to frame a message and have it be heard.

>this science says that the bias is unconscious,
>that it can be changed with effort,

I don't think they actually showed they could make a lasting change. Remember there were what like 15 experiments and only one or two yielded some debatably positive results.

>and that it doesn't come from your personal, conscious feeling
>about black ppl--
>instead it comes from socialized implicit biases planted in

>that was designed to perpetuate racism and keep it invisible.

But they don't go here at all, rather say dat cism is in our natural makeup. I'd love to see a separate study on how elements of society play into that, psychologically reinforcing dat 'cism on a subconscious level.

i've read other articles and studies that suggested it was possible
to change your biases somewhat.

plus i've talked to a dude that's done research like this,
so some of my response was probably taking that stuff into account.

i didn't read it closely.

one interesting part was the section where they proved 'cism makes you stop thinking creatively.

but again it's like you appy that on a social scale and you end up with a creatively stagnant society because personal bias' are keeping us from realizing potential. now overlay that with the history of america and it becomes a really fascinating thing.
