"How many people here have "grown up" and changed?"

How many people here have "grown up" and changed / modified their thinking or positions on alot of issues, to the point that they actually start understanding what some of their elders was harping on about certain issues? I have.

Someone I used to mess with & is way more of a friend than anything now, but we didn't start that way.
She saw I was in town and wanted to link up. It ate at me a bit. A couple years ago I brought my lady to Texas for the first time, it was my birthday and I invited pretty much everyone I knew.
She was one of the people that didn't show up but aimed to try to get us to divert plans to hang out with her. I don't really divert plans for other people, let alone on my birthday weekend.
Anyways, I passed on hanging out. I'll see her at an event with friends later this weekend. But aside from people that I've KNOWN for years, I'm not comfortable meeting up with women my lady hasn't met.

That did not at all used to be the case.

never, in my life, have i ever come to agree with
an adult was talking out their ass and then said "you'll understand it when you get older."

the times when ppl said that, i am still right about it.

adults only play that card when they're losing an argument.
i know that now.

even if it was true.

I see myself complaining about the music these days, the sagging pants, the kids with entitlement issues.

These were all things that I heard adults complaining about when I was young and I thought they were full of shit.

they bitched and whined about the way we wore our pants and we've turned out fine for the most part.

the kids will be alright. <-- that's the only 'right' answer to the questions posed by the hand-wringing over what the kids these days are doing.

fuck you.

you hate young ppl's music and fashion choices because you are old.
those entitled youth skip from job to job because the job market is terrible,
at least in part because of decisions made by the generation before us.

things adults told me:

"you need to know the Pythagorean Theorem. Not just for the test. You use it everyday life." (i have never in my life used the Pythagorean Theorem in
real life after leaving school. That was a lie.)"

"Once you get to the real world, you'll understand why it's important to go
to church. These are lessons you can't get any other place." (again, not true.)

etc.

i am not judging adults here.
they didn't have answers then and i don't have them now.

but some of the shit some adults said to me was wrong.
the adults i respected most would explain things they got and admit
when they didn't know.

the ppl that tried to get me to view the world in black and white
were wrong then, and they are wrong today.

Like stuff relating to interpersonal relationships (love, sex, friendship, office politics, etc).

I think you need a little bit of experience and maturity to understand things like that so "You'll understand when you're an adult" is sometimes appropriate.

Why are mom and dad always arguing?
Why don't cousin's dad and mom get married?
Why don't we hang out with grandma?

for example, i often had my crushes dismissed as "puppy love."
yes, love has many levels. some are beyond the comprehension of a child.

but infatuation IS very much a part of love,
and that doesn't go away as you get older.

i disagree when adults tell me that infatuation/ lust
is an insignificant part of love.

that don't make sense to me.

the why do mom and dad argue is a bit heavy, sure.
and i understand it more now.

so maybe there's something to that line sometimes.
but i never asked that question.

Some things are blatant "you bat shit crazy telling me that" but there are some things that you are like "you just skurred that's why you telling me that" but later on down the line, you see the wisdom in what they was instructing.

i think i trusted whatever adults said as true until i was in middle school.
i'm still undoing a lot of bullshit they said that i just believed.

think of it this way.

i am now the same age my mother was when she had me.
i, right now-- today, don't have answers.

but if i had a kid, sometimes I'd just have to come up with some answers.
i'd be making some shit up as i went along.

adulthood doesn't grant you some magical insight that you got on a kit
when you turn a certain age.

and sometimes, if a kid points out something that don't make sense,
adults get defensive.

just like i get defensive sometimes.

because humans are human, and nobody really gets what's going on or why.

just like my elders were less reasonable when i was a kid.

it's already happening and it'll just keep happening.

i will want those damned kids off my lawn. i used to not think it was a big deal for me to be on my elders' lawns.

and it wasn't a big deal.

and it's not a big deal now for kids to be on my lawn. they're just passing through. i need to chill.

my wife and I walked down to get some Starbucks.

My dad, uncle, and a cousin are sitting on the front porch smoking a joint and my aunt calls asking if I want some coffee.

I tell her I already got a frapaccino or some shit from Starbucks and she starts cracking up.

My cousin looks at me and says "damn, you done changed"

and we all fell out laughing. If I never left home I would prolly never step foot in a Starbucks. Eat Oysters and Clams and shit....

I also spent a night hanging out in NYC with my wife, our friend who we suspected was gay and 3 of his flaming ass friends.

I would have NEVER done no shit like that 10 years ago. It's not something I would strive to do but I didn't bounce like I would 10 or so years ago.
