"Can we name all the times Luther ever said "girl" in a song?"

I always talk about how Luther simply sang about love in a universal way, because I
could recall very few times (if any) that he said "girl".
I was listening to "Give Me The Reason" today tho, and he says "To Love You, Girl" over and over
at the end of the song.
Part of me thinks that's because he's basically saying "I ain't fuckin wit'chu no more" in
his classy Lutherized way.
Of course the elephant in the room is that there were the rumors that he was gay...
not that that matters concerning his genius, but it would add a tiny amount of merit to
the previous speculation.
ANYWAY! What examples do yall have? Can you think of any off-top?

in his song lyrics.

b/c he didn't.

we can read 'Your Secret Love' as being about a closeted relationship.

but it's not.

Luther was a songwriter who cut his teeth in the era before lyricists were expected to draw inspiration solely from their own life experience. so most of the lyrics to his songs aren't autobiographical. he didn't 'keep it real' w/his lyrics.

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/luthervandross/yoursecretlove.html

Oh, yes
A kiss in the dark
A certain time I can call you
A letter of love
But no name did you sign
Pretending to all
That we were just friends when I saw you
I didn't know that you wanted me to be
I didn't know that you wanted me for your
(For your) To be

- Your secret love
Why can't we tell somebody
'Cause secret loves
Never last as long
Your secret love
Will never be your true love
I can't be no secret baby
It's breakin' my heart
(You're breaking my heart)

You should've let me know, from the first time baby
That you were not, were not free to love
How could you wait so long
Oh, what a waste of love, baby
I should known that you wanted me to be
I should known
That you wanted me for your (for your) to be

I won't be you secret love
'Cause it's just a waste of my love
I'm tellin' you from the start
I won't be the one who gives you love
When your other guy ain't givin' you none

Don't come now, wait for awhile
Let's meet at the place downtown
It's a shame it has to be like this
But I really miss you baby

fuck you.

He writes about looking in mirrors.
Lyrics overall way too visual for a dude that can't see beyond formless shapes

I'm glad for songwriters not keeping it too real.
Would've been a waste of their creative talents.

his tendency for cliches makes him call that love "the apple of his eye."
he knows that leaves "turn to brown when autum comes around" because he was told it was so and had no choice but to believe it was so.

Stevie's blindness makes him hyper-aware of the leaps of faith most of us
take without thinking about it.

that's what gives him mystical innervisions even though he has no sight.

then add on the fact that stevie believes he is the peer of anybody that can read this,
and he has an oddball sense of humor, and bam.

stevie sings about about moments of reflection by looking in the mirror.

^ i can't take credit for that. it's shamelessly plagiarized from Robert Christgau.

"Everything She Wants" in particular was my favorite Wham! song when I was younger.
I think I said before that I didn't listen to alotta Luther because I considered him "old folks music".
I fux with him now that I'm old tho.

father figure is about a woman with daddy issues.
i want your sex is about being in the "friend zone."

they speak more to issues pertaining to dealing with women, not men.

"faith" could be about either gender.
"freedom 90" might be about being gay but i dunno-- it's probably about fame.

his 90s hits were about being gay (fastlove, outside, etc).

Because i would really, really love to stick around

Heaven knows i was just a young boy
Didn't know what i wanted to be
I was every little hungry schoolgirls pride and joy
And i guess it was enough for me
To win the race? A prettier face!
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll tv
But today the way i play the game is not the same
No way
Think i'm gonna get me some happy
I think there's something you should know
I think it's time i told you so
There's something deep inside of me
There's someone else i've got to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Take back your singing in the rain
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

All we have to do now
Is take these ties and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that i don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me
Freedom
You've gotta give for what you rake
Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take
Heaven knows we sure had some fun boy

What a kick just a buddy and me
We had every big-shot goodtime band on the run boy
We were living in a fantasy
We won the race
Got out of the place
I went back home got a brand new face
For the boys on mtv
But today the way i play the game has got to change
Oh yeah
Now i'm gonna get myself happy

^^ those lyrics are pretty specifically about George leaving his Wham image behind. he doesn't want to be a Pop act - he wants to be someone else.

is that someone else gay? the lyrics don't require that reading but they lend themselves to it.

fuck you.

>>father figure is about a woman with daddy issues.

yes. ppl have been cruel to the object of his affection in their past,
and he wants that person to view him as the good father figure they never had.

i ain't never heard of gay dudes talk to men that way.
but plenty of dudes that get laid in the regular have spoken on it.
"women w/ daddy issues" is something straight men become aware of
as soon as they start getting trim on the regular.

>>i want your sex is about being in the "friend zone."

i have never in my life heard of a gay man complaining that
a dude he liked wasn't giving up the drawls because he was in the "friend zone."

gay dudes cite lots of reasons for not getting laid.
that's not one of them. that's something that straight dudes say, in my experience.

>>they speak more to issues pertaining to dealing with women,
>>not men.

>>"faith" could be about either gender.

it's about being afraid to put your heart out there to get stepped on.
that's universal.

>>"freedom 90" might be about being gay but i dunno-- it's

some of the lyrics sound like they are about wanting to come out as gay,
but taken as a whole, the lyrics are about dealing with the public and the label
and wanting to get away from his Wham! image.

do straight dudes typically let women blow them in their car
because they just needed to take their mind off of heartbreak?

is it that easy for straight men to find quick sex?
or is that more like a cruising experience that only gay men experience?

i am speaking anecdotally.

I don't know.

but these are reasonable interpretations of these lyrics.
i didn't talk to George Michael, but I can listen good
and that's my interpretation of the lyrics.

why do you disagree?

So you're saying they're aren't any older gay dudes getting it in with younger dudes and playing a "father figure" role at the same time?

lyrics the same, referring a male/boy?

I thought I was hearing it wrong, but someone in my class pointed it out too..back in the 90's. He remade a song, and the lyrics were on some "ooooh boy I love you so" and he kept them the same.

plus when Al B. Sure sang the song he feminized the pronouns which may have confused ppl into thinking the lyrics are about the protagonist listening to his or her lover 'killing softly' by singing details from the protagonist's personal life.

read up, folks:

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him
To listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
A stranger to my eyes

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I felt all flushed with fever
Embarassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters
And read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

He sang as if he knew me
In all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me
As if I wasn't there
And he just kept on singing
Singing clear and strong

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me

He was strumming my pain
Yeah, he was singing my life
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly
With his song

fuck you.

it included 'Killing Me Softly' where he sang using male pronouns.

it also included 'All the Woman I Need' also known as 'All the Man I Need'. but Luther sang it w/the feminized noun and pronouns.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_%28Luther_Vandross_album%29

...but maybe the song you heard is on there. i dunno.

I knew Killing me softly, especially with it being fresh off the Fugees remake.

I noticed it, and then remember my homegirl who sings catching it and talking about it at school. I definitely can't remember what it was at all though, that's why I was asking here to see if anyone else could remember.
