"What do you consider "walking distance""
Mon Dec-08-14 10:54 AM by John Forte

In blocks, miles or minutes

I think there's a Target within walking distance of our house. My wife disagrees. It's .8 miles away or about 10 blocks. 15 blocks or less is walking distance (although I understand not wanting to walk it every day). Basically, if it takes you longer to wait for and ride the bus or train, it's walking distance.

i.e. i'm not paying bus fare just to go 3 stops when that's only a 10 min walk.

But generally I'd say up to 30 mins.

I don't do much walking like that in the summer. In the summer, I'm gonna be sweating within 5-10 minutes of walking. But this time of year, I can go a good ways with no problem.

Cold usually if it's heavy rain or snow
Then it's too much and I'll barely walk a block
Otherwise I'm fine with cold
A mile or two in 30/40 degree
I warm up while walking

But heat?
Heat can suck a big one
Walking distance is a block for heat if it's 80 or above

In warm weather, walking distance is 15 minutes. In the cold, it is 4 minutes or less (and preferably less -- I detest walking in the cold more than anything else in life). I currently live 2 blocks away from the subway, and during the winter, it feels like 2 blocks too many.

The scraping of the ice, the waiting for the car to warm up, the shoveling, the driving on icy roads. It was miserable and the process took much longer than my current 4-minute walk to the subway.

I prefer living in a city with comprehensive public transportation, for sure. But my dream is to live in a city with no winters at all. I wish could bring the MTA to Miami or New Orleans

I became a walker when I traded the countryside for the city and sold my car... pretty much walk everywhere unless I'm going to work (that extra 30 minutes in bed is tooooo valuable) or the city's threatening to go Atlantis on me.

Humans were built to walk a LOT.

that's the average. Anything over that I can do but that's not a typical walking trip, that's exercise lol.

Anything under a mile automatically is walking distance, a mile is a 15 min walk on average (can be shorter but I like to lollygag). At my old place I walked to Target all the time and it was about a little less than one mile (.75 or so).

Anything farther that 3 miles means I pull out the bike, because it's much faster than walking.
