"what do you think non-strugglers get out of 'struggle music'?"

collectively listening to the same music, but hearing different things.

what's more important - the message or its interpretation?

and will listen to both music about the struggle and "music" that struggles to actually be music for that purpose. While driving around inside the new Volkswagen, of course.

But that's pretty opposite enjoying music for music's sake.

Waka Flocka would be considered music made from the struggle, whereas Talib would be "struggle music."

We cant answer the initial question cause "struggle music" sounds too broad yo.

'cause no matter where you are in life, no matter how much you've "made it", you can always find yourself back knee deep in the struggle in a heartbeat.

On this day last year I was making a nice cushy 6 figure salary, nearly 3000 sq/ft 4 bedroom crib with a fat ass pool out back, coupla Benzes and alladat.

6 weeks later I got laid off.
We foreclosed and had to vacate the house by the end of June.
Gave up a ride.
Ch13 saved the one car we have and keeps the bank and creditors off our ass.
Relying on unemployment and SNAP to get by.
6 of us living in a small ass 2 bedroom weekly (most of the time 5 of us 'cause my eldest is usually at her grandmother's crib which is much closer to her job)
Unemployment ran out with no extensions (thanks congress!)
Took a job paying $10/hr and doing odd shit to get by which really took the place of unemployment.
Barely afford clothes and shoes. Walk more than I drive 'cause it's cheaper

Sometimes you wind up back in a fucked up place even after you've made it out of the struggle. I'm on my way back having finally landed a client a few weeks ago and am now making money... Not nearly what I was making, but enough for us to live comfortably and get our life back on track.

I'll stay listening to struggle music.

wtf is struggle music?

like that's some universal term we all recognize as a thing and should be well-versed in it

is struggle rap the shit people post and promote on here as in...struggling to reach ears or struggle music as in content about struggling?

cause that's like 50% of music and shit

'struggle music' meaning something completely different to different people is a part of the conversation, actually.

i want all perspectives.

we are exploring.

we are NOT on a quest to prove someone wrong or right (are you preoccupied with reminding me of my shortcomings?).

im sort of disappointed in you - i hadn't realized you were this petty, astralblak.

music made by a 'representative' of a group of downtrodden peoples.

also. the music should reflect/address the state of downtrodden-ness.

or. there's a quality about the music that identifies to the listner that 'these people are struggling' (maybe buckets and pots instead drums?)

but this brings up the idea that is the insertion of 'struggle content' the same as 'struggle music'?

who is the audience?

is the struggling musician speaking to his fellow human strugglers, or is he sending out a message to the non-struggling masses to cause some sort of awareness and instigate help?

can 'struggling people' make happier, lighter, music. is that struggle music simply cause it's made by struggling peoples?

i don't know. it's just some shit to think about.

If one is able to emote feelings of struggle into their music, it can actually go a long way in helping people to connect to experiences they haven't had directly. People like to downplay it, but music is actually an important component garnering empathy, because the listener can be taken on a journey by the artist.

For instance, young struggle up there spits relatable bars but only to someone that's been there. I refuse to forget where I came from and struggle bars keep me grounded. It's easy to get out in this world and forget at times that they don't fuck with you, want you dead, hope you fail. This music reminds me it's not sweet however you think it is.

i was at a 4th of july jam with like the roots and ewf and so forth. roots were doing "just push on up" and this fat white chick next to us goes "i dont relate to this song at all as a middle class white person."

kinda blunt but honest, i guess.

i think at worst it's like the people who drive through the hood on some sort of ghetto safari, at best it's some real effort at empathy. personally i dont knock it, i mean you don't have to be sad to appreciate the blues. or do you?

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

45. "wait. so you're quick to extrapolate what struggle music is"
In response to Reply # 36

but not exactly what it isn't??

real talk. most music could be interpreted as struggle out of the effort that it gets to actually put one's self out there.

even iggy azalia(sp?) for example because technically she puts herself out there everytime. struggling probably with sexual, racial, and general fuckery aimed her way while she's trying to be an artist.

so in regards to the benefit of music, struggle or otherwise. it's a point of contact. a place where others can relate to the turmoil or the joys in the inner chambers of your heart. which isn't obtuse in the slightest. part of even why the oldest negro spirituals can bring a tear to your eye because you feel/hear the hurt and internalize it.

it's easier to get a point across when you got a hook or a dope beat.

it's one of the primary principles behind magazine publication, to present glamour in both content and advertising so that the reader feels like they are getting a slice of the good life for cheap.

someone at the low end fantasizing about the high end is not at all hard to understand.

Knowledge or understanding, but that's probably the exception to the rule.

struggle music, but music is not that important to everybody. most folks just roll with what's comfy and sounds good to them. couldn't care less about the struggle messages or the artist's personal fight.
