I learned a lot of hard lessons from my previous Kickstarter, when I attempted to launch the first campaign without building a solid fan base one year ago. In that time I have become an artist capable of illustrating my own work and I've built a loyal following through publishing regularly at Reality Sandwich and Disinfo.com.
I've already completed about 12 of the 24 projected pages, so the March 2015 release is a conservative estimate considering I am doing the equivalent of a 5 person job, and I intend to finish before then.

But check out the reward levels on the sidebar. I've found that to be the trick to a successful kickstarter. You're basically letting them preorder your first run of whatever project it is you're working on. I've ordered art (posters), toys (custom pieces so you can use legos, k'nex, and hot wheels tracks together), board games and other shit like this. Its how i support independent creators first.
Here're examples of some of the more successful ones I've backed that weren't comic related. Look at his goal and look at what he actually got.

I've done a lot of research too and i've noticed that a lot of people with multiple crowdfund projects dont meet their goals the first time...so i didnt exactly go into this with high hopes but i know i can only do my best.
as far as building a solid fan base, i think the campaign is helping me do that. it's not just about raising the money. with my project, i know i needed some sort of hype before i publish my first chapter on jan 1.
i did tweak some of the perks based on your feedback. (at the $5 level, i added a pdf of each chapter and for the $10 level, i added a poster.) i think things will pick up the closer i get to the initial launch date and when i start publishing more sequential work. and i'm going to extend the campaign another 30 days so i will have 2 chapters published during the campaign. lol this is for real starting from the bottom.

i was getting likes and followers from day 1 based on that. i've been doing it a few weeks and should hit 300 followers soon... it's much easier to get attention from that if the thing your'e doing is visually based vs text based like twitter.
Yeah, I use GIMP for editing my photos into comic images, I mainly bought Manga Studio just to put things into comic panels/rows and add Text. However trying to size my imported images into the panels is working the way I need it to.

feeling super blessed because i've gotten so much help, support and feedback and things are coming along.
The cameos really are a trip. It's fun to use pictures that show a person's personality and fit it into the story. It makes me feel like the story belongs to other people rather than just from my head TO other people. Plus, I love drawing people.

back when i wrote that version, i didn't know how easy it was to just not use a condom. i thought it made more sense for a woman to deliberately get preggers than to just be irresponsible, lol.
