""Dear White People" the flick, anyone see it, thoughts? Nukkepdia signal"

B. Touch

I couldn't find the other post here. And the one in PTP is long as hell (for my iPhone 4).

Saw it last night. Theater was full of white people. Like, FULL. On a Wednesday.

I thought it was much more School Daze than Do the Right Thing.

Funny, but I'm not sure if its a movie for black people that are aware of what time it is

IN THE SENSE

that if you know what time it is then none of the topics are new

and the same time, it goes over a lot of tough and difficult situations/interactions/thoughts

i held my breath for about 85% of the film.

I'm glad I went, but this is kind of like 12 years a slave for me...amazing to see but I am probably never going to see it again.

that said,

I loved all of the spike lee references throughout the film

Surprisingly well put together film. It had some flaws (third act was kind of limp, too many characters lead to an uneven focus on some). But what it got right, was very surprising:

the 'bad' guys and 'good' guys were multidementional. The sellout negro had valid points, and the pro-black ones were assholes in their own right. And the arguments were pretty complex.

It was funny as shit; the jokes came in a mile a second.

Overall the plotting/directing/acting, very well done.

Solid B.

And it felt like a window into college (didn't end up being true). Sex everywhere, queer culture normalized. I felt like I was getting a glimpse into a college life that felt more authentic than my own. People trying to find themselves rather than just trying to get a job.

Act three is a jumble.

For a movie that jumps out the gate screaming "message!" It manages to be more relatable as it makes humans out of its characters. I also noticed the mirror motif borrowed from "Imitation of Life" (as the characters lie or become dishonest to themselves).

Tessa Thompson is cute (very cute) and funny...not sure how I feel about her dramatic scenes. Tyler Williams as cinema's first realistic gay black nerd (dead animal on head aside)? Cool. Everyone else was ok, though (by its nature) a lot of the white characters were a touch too Gargamelish.

What happened to Sophie (the white girl)?

How is B. Scott gonna feel about Coco taking his catchphrases?

I think Tyler woulda did a better job with this idea. I couldn't get through the trailer I hated all the characters, the plot isn't good. Black folks lets do something creative. If this is the smart edgy side of black Hollywood were fucked.

Reggie's character definitely needed a bit more fleshing out...

the whole riding her coattails to his desired end result plotline was dropped a lil too unceremoniously...

Lionel was one of the more interesting characters but i felt like he was really the only one who resolved anything concretely

the end wasn't as clean as some folks are going to like but i think that's the most realistic outcome...

I couldn't figure out just how to react to the dean's son though...especially at the end...i expected him to crack under the pressure but in the end nepotism usually wins

1) How pitiful that Lionel was so down on himself that he'd let this racist white dude festishize him? "I could eat you up like a hershey"...gah

2) Why ain't Lionel fight back? Him and Kurt look the same weight, and even if he didn't know how to fight, couldn't he have rolled to one side and flipped him over? Convenient writing?

3) So, Sam's dad is a white man named Mr. White? LMAO

4) Are Ivy league schools' dining halls built directly into the individual dorms like that?

-that really resonated with me. I've had that happen before with a white lesbian. She's flirting with me heavy. I was feeling intrigued and kind of feeling it even though i dont usually go for white girls. Then she said some insane, fetishy comment that caused a record scratch. I'm sure there were signs i may have missed, but it still caught me by surprise and was disappointing.

As an outsider, that guy seemed predatory to me from the get go, but Lionel was probably pretty hard up and didn't have the insight to pick up on it.

Lots of that in this movie. lol

I think this may be a bigger school thing. I went to a small, private pwi and we definitely only had one main dining hall. But i think I remember UT having separate dining halls in the dorms.

he was so desperate for attention, intimacy, anyone giving a fuck that he was sooooo close to overlooking it for ol boy

i didnt even see ol boy as being that bad (race-wise) but just overall being typical journalistically opportunistic...it wasn't really until the party that i was full-blown upset with dude...he wanted his story, he thought he found a source and had multiple ways to motivate him too

i feel like that was a misguided move plot-wise too...the only properly race aware person can't be the TA that's boning his mulatto student lol

i feel like some of the white characters were mishandled a bit but other than that...i thought the majority of the characters were complex enough and the lack of a tidy resolution was apt

Oh naw...he said something on the phone to the advisor from the NYT about how he didn't understand "those people" and their need to be "different" and Lionel heard it all. That's why he gave that loud-ass knock.

And in the same scene he lets him kiss him.

Not always. I know at Columbia, they didn't. Students went to the main dining hall and the various other dining halls on campus

as for my alma mater, Oberlin College (technically given "Little Ivy" status though to date, we don't want it...), we DID have dining halls attached to dorms in addition to traditional dining halls.

Lord and Saunders Halls, the black student dorms on campus, are connected by one dining hall.

I believe Asia House (mostly all Asian students), had a dining hall at one point.

Hebrew House (Jewish student house), I don't think they had a dining hall but they had access to a kitchen and they had a co-op type situation...

same with Keep Co-Op, Baldwin/Third World House Co-Op, and other smaller co-ops on campus - they had their own dining hall set up...
