academia?

This is not a purely academic demographic query. The project that my son is working on centers around student productivity.

- If you are a student, how much time do you spend per week or day studying?

- How do you stay on top of your assignments?

- If you work (or have some other heavy time commitment, like playing a sport or being in a band), how do you juggle your schedule?

If you're a professor or grad assistant, recent student or parent, your insights would be appreciated as well.

I was never a studier though. Never took notes.

With the kids we do project based stuff so its not really studying per se. They get involved in a project (or projects really) and will commit as much time during the day as their interest can manage. Deadlines are really self imposed (unless its an outside thing) and so they could be dedicating days on end to something sunrise to sunset, or just working on it a little at a time, some days not at all.

doing an MA f/t, but I also work p/t and work on other projects here & there (writing, radio, consulting)

I am only in official lectures/seminars about 10hrs a week but I go to as many additional lectures/events as possible. Then say another 10hrs a week doing official studying (set texts, etc), but at least as much time immersed in additional reading/researching. I only just started though so I know the workload will get heavier.

as a former adjunct and possibly going back...it wasn't easy managing both class teaching and working a full time job (because we all know adjuncts don't get paid much at all)....

For me, I treated it like I did when I was a full time public school teacher: I worked on lessons/my course(s) daily, at least a few hours a day minimum.

Since I taught as an adjunct once a week, usually on the weekends, once I got into the a manageable schedule with the full time teaching and adjunct work, it wasn't so bad.

being an adjunct sounds very cool. at the same time, seems like a lot of work and responsibility to pick up.

I spend about 25-30 hours per week reading for my own classes, reading stuff related to my dissertation or discipline, and materials for my classes/grading papers/meeting with students.

>- How do you stay on top of your assignments?

I create a reading/writing schedule for each semester and stick to it. No excuses. I also work closely with one my classmates. We'll read a text every week and then talk on the phone about it prior to that weeks class. It helps flesh out ideas. We also take turns outlining the readings for each other.

I do most of my work early in the morning and late at night. My husband is great. He fixes the kids breakfast and gets the off to school so I can work. I also use my office hours to get a lot of my own work done.

>If you're a professor or grad assistant, recent student or

The main problem I see with my students is that they have poor study and time management skills. They also don't use their resources like office hours, campus writing center, the library, and study groups.

did you have a mentor or someone who prepped you on how to balance being student AND teacher?

that's cool that y'all have that kind of working relationship. it sounds like it is very helpful. also, i admire your discipline. i have a lot of innate proclivities but that, plus my professional career have led me, alas, somewhat hardwired to be interrupt-driven.

consistency in any type of regimen is really hard for me.

that's dope. having an understanding and helpful S.O. has got to be a major success factor.

:-D

that's something we're trying to address.

what, in your opinion, gets students to 'get it' in terms of availing themselves of those additional resources? being in trouble? constant reminders? or is it pretty cut and dry that some will and some won't, regardless of external motivations?

Grad Student-2 classes a week, study the off days perhaps 3 hours. I take notes from the reading because I am a heavy visual learner and I also take advantage of office hours.

Its just my husband and I so thats not a huge load but my volunteering has been cut back tremendously (I miss my R.O.P girls)

As a sometime instructor at a community college and a part of a admin. team at small charter institution, the biggest issue I see facing students (children and adults) are poor organization and time management, lack of preparation in previous institutions and disinterest.

Even thought it's nothing new, to see it all laid out out like that in detail is so sad.

Ugh just makes me think about the years I spent wondering where I had gone wrong because my first university experience was unsuccessful, and didn't realise the support systems that were in place for my peers. Despite the fact that I feel enormously privileged in many ways, I simply didn't understand how to navigate the system. And so much more difficult for many people I grew up with, it's just no wonder really.

Yes multi hued highlighters/markers are my friends. I have a huge dry erase calendar in my home office (did I mention I have a bizness but its dribbles here and there LOL) and I track due dates assignments meetings etc. I also have a fancy ass smart phone that syncs with my google calendar.

I havent taught in a while (just no time) but when I did, my deadlines had a little bit of wiggle room but not much. My syllabus I had bold face type for important items and I used the 2 and 2 method. 2 weeks before due and 2 days before due. I wrote things on the board and sent out reminder emails. I probably was coddling them because of BLACK reasons LOL.

Some really appreciated it some didnt at their grade reflected as such. I got called a bitch a few times but meh...

- I definitely spent more time studying in grad school than undergrad. I just didn't really care much about gpa or grades and was a huge procrastinator. Also was involved in a few on campus clubs. Grad school I was in the library every night sometimes until close while working FT and then doing more work/studying at home.

- Stayed on top of assignments with a planner. I'm sure kids now moreso use their phone calendars but I prefer to write things down.

- In undergrad I had FT classes, worked a PT job (on campus) and volunteered with our athletics dept. Just a lot of late nights but it was easy b/c everybody was up late doing the same thing.

- Grad school I worked FT, took 2-3 classes a semester, & my internship (which was about 15-20 hours a week). My weekends weren't much of my own and again, lots and lots of library time. Sorry study wise if I got out of class at like 7 I'd be in the library til midnight 2-3 nights a week)

**from what I see now with students time management is even worse than when I finished. Like with everything, not just academics, but being involved in student orgs I'd say MAYBE 20% of things are well planned out and I'm saying 2 weeks or more. A huge part of it is deadlines being extended, even with financial aid or adding/dropping classes, there's just no sense of urgency

I use an actual planner, and an app on my phone

By taking my laptop everywhere with me lol
and designating certain subjects
for certain days, weekends are for catching up on
anything i missed for work during the week.
my job schedule is very flexible, so that helps

Student productivity is fun in this new era so let's talk about it.

>- If you are a student, how much time do you spend per week or

Roughly 28 hours a week.
>
>- How do you stay on top of your assignments?

I've got automated Gmail reminders through IFTTT. As a matter of fact IFTTT is my go to for productivity automation.

I instantly set up reminders for all assignments after getting the syllabus. All projects are broken two deadlines: early deadline and procrastination. I use 20 reminders for each spread throughout the week. It's my way of annoying myself into doing the work.

I do two hours of studying in the morning and two before or after work.

These new students have NO EXCUSES other being lazy as shit, no offense. I take notes in class and send them to myself in an email. IFTTT then notices the email meets certain criteria and makes new google document with the class title and date of the notes. I then take those notes and record them out loud, sync that to the cloud/smartphones and listen to them before bed.

I wish I had the option of syncing my hand notes to the cloud so I wouldn't have to carry about notebooks. Fuck writing by hand by the way as a student. Ditto for taking notes in lectures when you can record the audio and have it to sync to the cloud. I wish we had ebooks that allowed us to annotate them and avoid carrying a book to class.

Here are some useful recipes to start off most people:

http://recombu.com/mobile/article/best-ifttt-recipes-ios-android-simplify-your-life_M20501.html

http://alliworthington.com/productivity-ifttt/

I use one recipe that logs my study/work hours to a google spreadsheet in order to track productivity across weeks. If I'm in a library and don't feel like checking out a book but need useful info I'll scan the text into my phone and have it send that to evernote.

All of this is done in the background. The service has a channel for Android so y'all can take advantage of that.

very cool. i used IFTTT too, but not for this.

there are a lot of potential solutions out there. from my research (and my son's) you have to kind of cobble together different things together. but you're right. if you do the work and fully utilize the stuff that everyone has available to them, upfront, it should be very possible for ppl to stay up on all of this.

interesting view. that would be dope to auto sync handwritten notes. (there's a pen that does this, somewhat). this is where we start to diverge, however, because some folks prefer the handwriting aspect as 'encoding' for their brain and it helps them retain more. i'm perfectly fine w/ typing all my notes (in a business setting as i'm not in school, but if i have important client meetings or, every once in a while, taking a class or something).

but there are apparently still a lot of profs who don't like technology in the rooms.

peace & blessings,

because i didn't have a traditional work load, i had to make it work around my life and what our schedule was. we also only had one car so it was pretty tricky the first year.

i basically stacked all my classes so that they were grouped up on the same days, like two m/w classes and one friday class, and then i'd use t/th/f to have the entire day in my studio. you really have to be self directed in the studio. in order to keep from being distracted, i tried to do everything in my studio. ate lunch, read books, studied, slept, etc.

i would do all of this btw the hours of 8:30/9 - 6/7 (when he got off work and could pick me up)

this routine really helped me accomplish a lot without letting my personal life suffer. i still try to maintain that now, esp since i currently have a studio. it helps with juggling the little one. i can't really work at home, too many distractions. when he goes to sleep i can sometimes squeeze in a bit of work.

like 1 to 4 hrs per day depending upon what was needed

>

my memory.
but i also jot down notes about whatever the prof said in class about the assignments.
being a math major most assignments needed to be turned around in a couple days so it wasn't like i had weeks to forget about them.

>- If you work (or have some other heavy time commitment, like

>schedule?

prioritize:
1. whichever client pays the most
2. which deadline is due first
3. which task is easiest

i usually get to pick two of the three

my life now is a continual masters degree thesis
i essentially write thesises all day

The learning in college takes place in the classroom. When I went to college it helped me tremendously to have a dialogue with a professor. Having come from a catholic school background it was so amazing to be able to preset my side and hear a professor's take on it. It helped my development as a student and it is an approach that I use with the students I work with now.
