"OKPOLITICOS: Rand Paul"

What do y'all think? He's making some ACTUAL real arguments here. Have you been paying attention? If he wasn't going up against Hilary I MIGHT actually be thinking about him.

Thoughts?

People show you who they are when they think no one's listening.

When people _are_ listening, sure they'll tell you what you want to hear.

This man said the Civil Rights Act was unconstitutional because he felt that private businesses should be around to discriminate, with the idea that the "free market" would prevent racist private businesses from being profitable. Bwa ha ha.

He would have to do A LOT to atone for all of that before I'd even consider even considering him a legitimate human being, let alone a political candidate.

Yea...I know some folk are impressed with what he has to say...

I'm wary on him right now.

I'm not siked about the prospect of another Clinton era (Hillary) and I love Elizabeth Warren, but something tells me the Democratic party with marginalize her/force her aside if and when Hillary announces she's going to run for President because Hillary is the Dems Golden Girl and Warren isn't that...

So we'll see...

vote for him for president. he still ushers the righties into power with him. we will see plenty of warped (and racist) shit proliferate. but i like him where he is because he is influential and *some* of his ideas are things that wouldn't otherwise be in the political mainstream.

i get the temptation of going for someone who seems at least sort of principled over hillary clinton, but nah. for me it doesn't matter, i usually just cast a vote for a third party or SPM anyway

low information voter talk, c'mon you are better than that

still waiting for the anger that Pres. Obama is no different than Pres. Bush when it comes to foreign policy, he is a neo-con.

I'm no Republican but why aren't Dems out protesting about what he has done? It's a carbon copy of Bush/Cheney

He extended the Patriot Act, he didn't close Guantanamo, he signed off on the NDAA, started an undeclared war against Libya, etc....

where is the anger?

Liz wants to regulate the banks big business and student loans. Protect consumers. Regulate businesses.

Rand wants everyone to basically be totally responsible for themselves.

There's a lot of overlap there. Sorry if y'all dnt see it.

Liz Warren + Cory Booker in 2016 = my dream ticket

But if they don't get in for whatever reason? And Rand keeps speaking that truth to power that he has been? Barring a Palinesque running mate, I'm in.

Reparations? Neither is going to support that

Legalizing weed? Rands with it. Liz maybe

Doing something abt student loans? Both agree it needs reform

Tax code? Both agree it needs reform

Gay people getting married? Liz is with it. Rand needs some work.

Mexicans want to treat the border like it doesn't exist? Rand says let's not do it piecemeal, legalize everything and hamstring the narcoterroritsts so people don't want to come here because it's better at home. Liz isn't there yet and needs work.

Etc etc

In other words, not that I have to explain shit to you mouth breathing misanthropes but on everything I think matters, ie actual progress not the same bullshit rhetorical word games...Liz Warren is by far the most progressive on the left and Rand is by far the most progressive on the right. Literally no other major candidate on either side comes close

So if Liz isn't running, I'm rolling with rand. Because I'd rather wholesale major change then the bullshit milquetoast be patient shit I've been force fed for 40 yrs

Best case scenario Liz + Cory or Julian Castro v. Rand + Marco Rubio and let's really get it poppington

one believes the market can solve all of our problems, if government would just get out of the way. the other believes the unchecked market is the reason things are as fucked up as they are as it is, and that government (as dysfunctional as it may be) is the only safeguard we have.

to say they both want to reform the tax code is about as general as it gets. their versions of reform won't be remotely similar. not to mention, every politician says that shit

barring some (possible) overlap in a couple social issues, they're polar opposites

she is relatively conservative but not what i would consider an old-school conservative or an eisenhower republican. i might like her more if she were.

Most "liberals" consider themselves to be progressive and
if you ask them about how they feel about a range of issues -
from government surveillance to civil liberties to engaging
(and furthering) wars abroad - they will align with Rand Paul's
philosophy (and voting record) quite demonstrably...

Yet you bring up the name Rand Paul and what you will hear is
"haha that looney? fuck him!"

Yes, that looney who happens to share your political ideologies.

note: i won't vote for Rand Paul - in fact, I won't vote for any of these candidates. But if a gun was to my head, I'd vote for him in an instant over the status-quo champion Hillary Clinton.

Because people are so concerned with red team, blue team nonsense and lack critical thinking skills on the issues at hand

My question is does a Democratic candidate even need to sell his ideas to the black community? They will vote for him or her anyway.

Same as burnt out Mining towns, hardcore Christian fundamentalists, etc will vote establishment Republican without a second thought. Jesus could run as a Dem with these folks and not get elected.

If I'm a Dem candidate with limited hours and time, I choose the Latino community to go hard in the paint with to win votes and take the Black community for granted

It's not like there's any threat of lost votes.

It's sad, but it's true and already happening.

Plus after the last election, both the asshole DNC and RNC have closed off any opportunities for a third party for the people. Can't continue to sell an increasing similar shit sandwich any other way.

If Hilary is the nominee then right now on his trajectory I think he beats her.

By 2008, we felt the awful backlash of an acolyte of Ayn Rand's hand on public policy -- in this case, Alan Greenspan. His tenure at The Fed was prefaced by very vocal support of Objectivism and free market with very little regulation. The underlying premise was that markets regulate themselves, that self-interest is inherently moral and reflects itself in human behavior, mitigating any abuses that might arise from lack of regulation or overarching authority.

Ayn Rand's philosophy was of debatable value even at the height of her popularity. That she was a relative elite in Russia (or as elite as Russia allowed Jews to be), and watched her family wealth confiscated by populist Communism essentially molded Objectivism as a radical mirror image of that philosophy, and as with most radical philosophies, is large untenable when scaled upward to large-scale society. Alan Greenspan proved just how untenable when he put those ideals into practice.

Beyond that, Paul Rand has very few actual original ideas. Dialing back the social contract to the Victorian Era is hardly a novel platform in 2015. In addition, we've seen the practical effects of 'hands off' administrations under duress. We could discuss the Hoovervilles of a Depression that dragged on for the better part of a decade, or we could look further back at the cyclical boom-bust Recessions that happened every few years in America prior to that. We could discuss the damage Ronald Reagan's administration did by retracting the regulatory hand of government: decades of stagnant wage growth, predatory lending, the strangulation of public services, unbridled growth of a military-industrial complex drunk on its own bloodmoney.

But really you have not much further to look back than 2008.

Isolationism, laissez faire economics, and reduction of government are not new.

Herbert Hoover ran on the same platform.

Can we say that we learned the lesson from the Bush Administration when his brother is a front runner who is being advised by the same folks who lead us into Iraq?

Despite the fiasco of a foreign policy under bush in the mid east folks are actively agitating that we go into Syria and Libya. Folks want to blow up peaceful talks with Iran.

If folks are that forgetful about matters of life and death they will certainly be so regarding economic policies.

...I think Rand Paul has the right lineage and rhetoric to convince people that he's got genuinely new ideas to tackle America's woes in 2016, when all he's armed himself with is the kind of minimalist faux-libertarian bullshit that gives White men erections,

That said, as vehemently as I disagree with him and many of his supporters, he clearly appeals to a demographic of voters, and democracy selects more for popularity than reason. After Netanyahu, I've given up on people making smart decisions.
