Luke Grimes Left “True Blood” Because He Refused To Play Gay

The actor who played James on True Blood left abruptly in December amid concerns about his character’s “creative direction.” BuzzFeed has confirmed that Grimes’ major objection was a same-sex pairing with gay character Lafayette.

As True Blood enters its seventh and final season, there’s almost too much going on to notice the recasting of James, the hunky vampire boyfriend Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) got paired with at the end of Season 6. When Luke Grimes suddenly left the show in December, HBO attributed his decision to “the creative direction of the character.” But now that James’ Season 7 storyline is becoming clear — a budding romance with Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) — a source close to the show confirms that Grimes left because he was uncomfortable playing a gay character.

To be clear, James, who is now played by Bunheads’ Nathan Parsons, hasn’t yet done the deed with Lafayette. But there were heavy hints in the June 22 season premiere, and the storyline is headed in that direction. According to the source, Grimes objected to the first few scripts he received, once it became clear that his character would become romantically involved with Lafayette. He countered that he would be willing to play the role if Lafayette were attracted to him, but not if the attraction was mutual. He also did not want to do any same-sex kissing or sex scenes. The writers were unwilling to change the scripts on his behalf.

Grimes’ publicist, Craig Schneider, says the actor’s exit from True Blood was always a matter of scheduling. In an email to BuzzFeed, he wrote, “Luke always had an out clause as a means of pursuing other opportunities which arose in the form of features beginning with The Shangri-La Suite, followed by Fifty Shades of Grey, and most recently, Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper with Bradley Cooper.” In a subsequent phone call, Schneider continued, “It had nothing to do with storylines, which he had not been privy to at the time of that posting,” referring to the Dec. 30 TVLine story.

Reached on Wednesday, a representative for HBO said their original statement about why Grimes’ exited the show has not changed.

According to the source close to True Blood, writers and cast members were baffled and angered by Grimes’ reluctance to take James in a same-sex direction, especially since True Blood has always been an overtly sexual show with heavy LGBT undertones. Despite the scramble to recast the part, the writers and cast are pleased with Parsons’ performance, and believe he’s a good fit for the role of James.

On the plus side, if James does end up with Lafayette, that frees up Jessica for a happily ever after ending with Jason (Ryan Kwanten) before the series finale, set to air Aug. 24.

from what I gathered, dude knew about the character change (his character going from dating women to dating man) in advance....and balked when his family and church, etc. got wind of it.

people have balked before at playing characters that they don't agree with (Actor Neal McDonough balked at playing a character who had nude scenes in an ABC midseason show called Scoundrels because he's Catholic and objected to his character's lack of morality etc., yet his card got pulled because he did Desperate Housewives where he was in all kinds of stages of undress and it was pulled magnificently)....

it happens but given that he knew about the character change before the show started shooting (don't believe the hype that he wasn't informed...), i can't rock with this....

then again, I've got no skin in the game because True Blood has been complete SHIT since forever...

An actual search on his name and the word gay without your formatting yields absolutely nothing, at least on the first page.

I'm not exactly his biggest fan but you're not presenting this in a fair or just light. He's clearly preoccupied, but 1. this particular topic is a fair one, and 2. your very specific formatting manipulated the google results in order to sensationalize things to a much greater degree than they actually are. i admit that some of those hits come from
folks mentioning Case in a post.

but case asked us to search his name.
he talks about the gay agenda quite a bit.
more than he talks about that other stuff he mentioned, actually.

He challenged you to search his name, not his name+the word gay.

She presented it as a mere google search+his name+the word gay=10 pages of material.

Well, that search turns up nothing.

A google search of OKP+gay narrowed those terms down in a major way, and that’s how she got the results she claimed she got from simply searching his name and gay.

Further, he said “search my name”

NOT

“search my name and the word gay”

Sorry, but you guys are out for blood *and* a pound of flesh here and while I’m no fan of his, you could have actually presented a more effective portrait of his posts by using unbiased search results.

Not only was it presented in an unnecessarily sensational way with the false claim that simply searching his name and the word gay in google turned up all these results as though he posted so much that he was allllll over google instead of just alllll over OKP, the search was NOT done in the way his challenge was presented.

His challenge to search his name was to show all the other things he speaks about, but confining the search specifically to the term gay turned up skewed and biased results. Conversely, removing the term “gay” from that search turned up 29 pages.

Clearly he- like many church goers- is disproportionately concerned with all things gay as compared to, oh, I dunno, fucking ANYTHING else. I mean, there’s about a thousand more important things Christians should point their attention toward, and yet Adam & Steve completely dominate their agenda. So, I’m with you on that. Case is obsessed with the ghey……

….and that’s my point. Rather than manipulate and sensationalize the results, an honest search with honest results tells us that the ghey dominates his posts to the tune of 33% of what google could crawl. Instead of letting the real results stand on their own and opting to present it in a clearly biased way casts you guys in a worse light than it does him, because it perfectly displays how willing you guys are to not only overly and unnecessarily sensationalize something to fuel a dogpile, but that you value such sensationalism much more than an accurate and neutral portrayal of the person you’re ganging up on.

To me it makes you guys look worse than it does him, and kind of turns him into a martyr on this one. IMO it’s telling that even when unskewed, unbiased results already told the tale, you guys would rather stack the deck in an attempt to make it look worse than it is.

The bottom line is an *honest* approach instead of an intentionally malicious search would have told the story just as well, but since you’re so eager to pile onto a guy who is roundly disliked as it is and is reminded of that fact on a daily basis, you’re perfectly fine with a dishonest approach to yielding the same result.

Yeah, that makes you just as bad in my book. It’s not as though he doesn’t know everyone strongly dislikes him, and it’s not as though the same story couldn’t have been told with a more stand-up approach. You’re willing to accept skewed results that were designed to achieve the worst possible portrait to begin with, as opposed to taking an honest look at his overall output. Since an honest approach yielded the same result, that’s proof enough to me that an honest approach was never even attempted.

At the very least, a fair and objective look should be given. As I’ve stated, I’m no fan of his. I strongly disagree with damn near everything he posts, but this is ridiculous.

Fair is fair, and you’re on the wrong side of that coin. If you’re cool with that, it ‘s a strong implication that you’d be just as willing to accept the original search even if a broader search revealed a different story.

Basically, I’d rather see a guy judged guilty based on an honest presentation of the facts as opposed to manipulated and skewed facts.

I'm not a fan of Case, yet I AM a fan of Sara. I even like you and agree with your general stance regarding Case.

The issue is that the actor was uncomfortable with the direction / expectation of the role. The writers could have removed the sex-scene and kissing if the actor was uncomfortable. He shouldn't have had to leave the show.
