"Have we discussed Black-ish?"

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5330293

Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Lawrence fishburne. The cast alone is compelling me to time in. But it looks funny and the subject matter appeals to my suburban-raised blackishness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Green Mile is a movie where the magical black man wrongly dies and the white man who let it happen lives forever.
It genuinely looks good, but it is a Black sitcom on network TV, and the only ones of those to find real ratings success (of the type that would keep them off the chopping block in 2014) deliberately played down Blackness on purpose.
This one goes in the exact opposite direction, on purpose and to good effect, but I have to wait and see how "the mainstream audience" takes it.
From the trailer I saw, it felt like it wasn't aimed at me. Most of the jokes & issues are things that folks my age have dealt with for decades. I'm afraid that it won't seem fresh or interesting.
The oldest girl just doesn't seem old enough to have that teenage dynamic that most family shows have.
The title. From the moment they announced it, I questioned why they thought that was a good title. I liked the premise (Still haven't seen the episode though), but thought the title will hold it back.
Played on that other failed show on BET and I officially just don't get the appeal of Anthony Anderson. I have tried several times over the years and I just don't get it
I wanna say maybe white ppl will find this funny but I love modern family and its lauded as being funny and it makes me crack up. I didn't laugh once watching this so I feel like this show is doomed
I'll stick around just cause I'm such a race man but it's really not good
she still got a nice ass....
but her acting is pretty much one single lane....
I never really was a fan of Anthony Anderson...but in retrospect, he's got a broad range of ability. I'm not suspecting that what's held him back more is the people he's paired with.....maybe?
They really need to de-bubble and de-sassify TER though.....
TV stays trying to give Anthony Anderson a show. I saw him on Food Network the other day, with a show.
And how is Larry Fishburne supposed to be his father? They're MAYBE 10 years apart in age.
man Larry Fishburne is coming UP on them checks...he's on black-ish, has a producer's role and is coming BACK to NBC's Hannibal for season three AND I hear he's a series regular still. So good for him...
I think the show has potential. I laughed at some parts, didn't in other parts.
I hope it gets better as the episodes progress.
it was very safe aside from the part where he tried to "keep it real" with the presentation and almost lost his job
kind of brilliant if the point of that scene was "black viewers would be most satisfied if our show was like this, but we're on ABC at 9:30 PM so we have to play the game"
It's like they're trying to explain our lives to white folks in hopes of improving race relations, but it wasnt very funny to me.
I only saw a few episodes of My Wife And Kids but I dug how it felt like I was watching a family of black folks and not a "black" family
the concept is wealthy black family cant escape being black no matter their quality of life
race is a touchy issue in this country, but this was a very safe show with numerous instances of white folks being insensitive and not called on it.
SXSW 2013 a random white woman asked me, MistaGoodbar and my folks if we knew where the weed was (making sure to make "black homie" hand signals). I said "why, because we're black?" and stunned her. this show seems like a lot of tongue holding and pride swallowing around Mr. Charlie, and while that's reality it could be taken by whites as exaggeration given it's a comedy
i felt it was about a wealthy black family that struggles with blackness when surrounded by nonblackness.
i didnt feel like they were all trying to escape or embrace blackness, but moreso just dealing with it.
i said it pushed the envelope bc i felt like there was more inside stuff than i expected...such as "africans dont even like us" and the rites of passage ceremony. this is shit that mostly only black ppl would relate to and it made the show seem somewhat unapologetic.
I meant they arent just seen as (well off) people, they're seen as black. the opening scene with the tourist bus driving past their house illustrated that, as did the snacks in the boardroom scene
he's always going to be seen as less than a human because of his race, and for it to a be safe show I think he's always going to refrain from confrontation
http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/09/25/abc-black-ish-ratings/
Black-ish had 10.8 million viewers and a 3.3 rating among adults 18-49 at 9:30 p.m. The big mitigating factor here is the size of its lead-in from Modern Family (10.9 million and a 3.7) — last year’s Super Fun Night, for instance, opened to a 3.2 in this slot and quickly faded. Yet ABC points out Black-ish had the highest retention of Modern Family viewers for a regular comedy debut in this slot ever.
>Interview: 'Black-Ish' Creator Kenya Barris Talks Blackness in the Age of Obama and in the Shadow of Cosby (Premieres Tonight)
By Jai Tiggett | Shadow and Act
September 24, 2014 at 2:17PM
Leading up to the series premiere, show creator Kenya Barris made time to talk with Shadow And Act about 'Black-ish' and what he hopes to achieve with it.
Premiering tonight on ABC, "Black-ish" follows Andre Johnson, a successful advertising executive, husband, and father trying to establish a sense of cultural identity for his family in the age of Obama and post-racial dogma.
The series is loosely based on the life of show creator Kenya Barris, who leads a team of black executive producers including Larry Wilmore, Brian Dobbins, and Helen Sugland, as well as Anthony Anderson and Laurence Fishburne, who also star.
Leading up to the series premiere, Barris made time to talk with Shadow And Act about the show and what he hopes to achieve with it.
About the series title, "Black-ish":
KB: I looked at my kids and realized that they're growing up in a much different way than I did. I'm from Inglewood; my kids are not. And my understanding of what it was to be black growing up is not the world that they're living in. They have a filtered version of that; it's a little black-ish. They've taken a lot of different things from what Americana has become.
And at the same time I looked around at everyone else who was in an additive way a little black-ish. I say it in the pilot – Kim Kardashian, Justin Timberlake, everyone else who – it used to be called "co-opting," but now it's "an homage." And it's people sort of finally giving us credit for our contribution to the Zeitgeist of the world today. So I felt like the younger generation is living in this homogenized world that we've never really seen before, which is capped off by our President who is black and mixed race. I could have called it "The Johnsons," or "Keeping it Real" or "The Burbs," but I felt like I wanted to say something about this world.
On comparisons to "The Cosby Show":
KB: Cosby is one of my mentors and that show changed my life. It was groundbreaking, but it was about a family that happened to be black. I wanted to do a show about a family that is absolutely black. Because as Du Bois has shown, we do have to live a double consciousness every day in the world. We have to walk our path and walk the mainstream path, and there's never really been a show that's talked about what that's like.
To me ("Cosby") is one of the greatest shows ever created. Monetarily, it's proven to be one of the greatest shows ever created. I set out to tell my story, which is based on my family. Dr. Cosby told his story in "The Cosby Show." The comparisons stop there in terms of my creation of the show. We just both happen to have black fathers at the center of it.
Reflecting culture in the series:
KB: Our main character is a little flawed, and I think that works to the nature of single camera comedies. He understands his misgivings eventually, that's his journey each week, and we're going on it with him. From my perspective, I went through African rites of passage ceremonies, I did Jack and Jill, I did Links and so many things that were part of what the black experience was growing up. And I saw some of the hypocrisy of it. I tried to do Kwanzaa with my family and was like, 'This sucks. What am I doing this for?'
For me, I felt like I was doing it because I was trying to live up to someone else's idea of what black was. At the same time, my aunt does it and loves it and has a huge amount of passion for it. But the great thing about culture on our show is that we don't have to have one point of view. They are not the spokesmen for Black America. They are one black family, and hopefully people laugh and like them, and hopefully they shed some light and start some conversations.
On Tracee Ellis Ross' character, Rainbow:
KB: She's a little more liberal. She's mixed race and comes from a different socioeconomic and cultural background. She's figuring it out too, as she goes. This is very much a couple who are figuring themselves out, and figuring out parenting, and we're on that ride with them in a much broader sense than I think we saw on "The Cosby Show."
Dr. and Mrs. Huxtable were as close to perfection as we could see, and I feel like was something that we really needed at the time. This family is going to make a few more mistakes. But these characters have learned from watching "The Cosby Show." Their lives are influenced by the same things that my life was influenced by, so they're aware that they have a very Cosby-esque life and they want to live up to that, and they feel disappointed when they can't.
On casting Ross:
KB: We always knew we wanted Tracee, but the network had to go through its process. But the moment she walked in, there was no competition. We had worked together before on "Girlfriends" and we've been friends for over a decade. I think that her talent is boundless. The best part of the show, to me, is the cast. They gelled from day one and you see that on the screen. It feels like a real family and that's usually hard to build. I'm so happy that it came together, and hopefully people like it.
"'Cosby'... was groundbreaking, but it was about a family that happened to be black. I wanted to do a show about a family that is absolutely black."
Bringing the show to ABC:
KB: We were really lucky. We showed it to ABC because of Paul Lee. They were the place that we thought would really get behind us and at the same time, let us do an honest version of what we thought the show should be. Honestly it's been a dream scenario.
On the pressures of representation:
KB: We want a show that we feel is true to our experiences. I think sometimes there's an unfair bias, especially amongst our people, that one thing has to be this pandemic cure-all for everything. And to me that's not fair.
This isn't a political show. It may express the political viewpoints of the characters, which are funneled through myself, my partners, and the writers. But it doesn't have pundits on either side. It's a reflection of my world, and Anthony's, and Laurence's, and Larry's world. We wanted to bring an honest reflection of our aggregate experiences, and just tell an honest story. That's all that any creative endeavor can hope to do, is just try and bring an honest version of their experience.
On audience expectations:
KB: I understand the reticence and some of the reactions to the title. I feel like as a black person in this country we've had the wool pulled over our eyes, we've had so much placed upon us, I get it. And I think that most of the response is out of context because they haven't actually seen the show. So I understand, and all I ask is that maybe it draws people to actually look at it and give it a chance and form their opinion from there.
If the show isn't for you, but it has something that may be for someone else, some support of the show still goes a long way. Because if it works, there might be three other shows behind it and one of those might speak to exactly what you're looking for. I'm not for having to support everything that's black, because I definitely don't. But I do feel like it is imperative for us to see that we are not a monolithic people. There are a lot of different things that we will embrace, and a more unilateral approach to some of those things may help us in the long run.
Thanks to Kenya Barris for the time.
Show creator, Kenya Barry, defines Black-ish in an August interview with the Huffington Post, here:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/29/black-ish-kenya-barris-critics-_n_5737966.html
Asked to describe the meaning of Black-ish, he responds:
I think it's a really inclusive word much less than an exclusionary word, in terms of it really speaks towards the homogenized society we're living in today...
...And so the ideology of what he saw, growing up, to be black, there's a little bit of a filtered, subtracted, watered-down version of that...
But then at the same time, he looks around and sees that there's an additive version when he looks and sees a lot of the cultural impact that black culture has had on what America is today, has spread beyond our particular race. He sees, Kim Kardashian is "black-ish." Dirk Nowitzki has a "black-ish" style of playing basketball. And he looks and feels like culture, in general, is at a place where it reached this sort of convergence, where it's all become sort of this one thing, and we've all sort of merged into this big homogenized pot of where we're from each other. And everyone else, in his eyes, has become a little bit more "black-ish."
My issue with that--
The mimickry and "integration" of Black culture into some "homogenized cultural pot" where we're all "borrowing" and merging into one another isn't a neutral or positive phenomena that "just happens" and we all woke up one day and realized we were a little *less* Black-ish and everyone else became a little *more* Black-ish, as some trade-off for stewing in that pot.
Lol. I stay woke. I'm not "less" anything.
Cultural theft and ransacking? Not new. Neither is the world assuming that their elements of ludicrous MIMICKRY and representation *is* Black culture.
Black bodies have long been a problematic vehicle for those who identify, regardless of race and ethnicity, with the troubling assumptions and desires of the White gaze.
What bothers me is when my own people get lost in those shenanigans and look at ourselves with that gaze (no matter how multi-cultural, homogenized, liberal, "new," and "nuanced," the position and framing of Black folks and culture may be in the "intelligent" light of it).
The show was like watching Black folks perform an unconscious type of upper-middle class blackface. Others still engage in "nuanced" forms of blackface-- in an attempt to "integrate" and meld into the pot, why not us, too?
on a cable channel like FX executing the same premise.
I loved that dude got the promotion (which they were telegraphing that he wouldn't get) but it was SVP of Urban.
I hated the repeated use of "keeping it real". No one uses that term anymore.
I hated the African Ceremony (too broad) loved the "They don't even like us joke.
Loved the use of Dead Prez.
Loved the mockery of field hockey.
Loved Obama the first president joke.
Thought it was funny boy wanted a bah mitzvah.
Need Larry to be more ornery. He needs to be saying sh*t that would get white people mad (a la George jefferson).
Hated that they ended up having a Bro Mitzvah. Seemed like a cave in. Just have a diddy style sweet sixteen.
Too safe and white audience geared in my opinion.
C+ in my opinion.
concept executed on cable. Maybe even FX.
Network sitcoms are broad because they have to appeal to six times as many people as a cable show does. Therefore, they have to play it safer and wider.
In response to Reply # 0
If this was the year 2000, then maybe it might've been patronizing.
But, (in 2014) its a slightly cute, mostly cliche primetime sitcom on ABC.
Ofcourse, the children act indifferent.
They don't need to care. Its not their faults. They were born too late.
Ofcourse, the father begrudgingly accomodates White America.
How else can he afford the suburban lifestyle for his upper-middle class family?
Honestly, I'm still not sure how I feel about this show.
I used to watch re-runs of Good Times, which was written by White people.
Kids today think The Cosby Show is corny (and boring).
Yeah, I get it: Why we gotta be "Black-ish"?
Why do we have to (still) say "keepin it real" (in 2014)?
People of Okayplayer: you will not see Nat Turner on ABC/NBC/CBS.
Just be glad they played a Dead Prez song.
Or don't.
ABC's black-ish Casts Jenifer Lewis as Anthony Anderson's Mother
By Michael Slezak / September 30 2014, 10:58 AM PDT
19
You can’t spell “smother” without “mother” — a lesson that will be abundantly clear now that Jenifer Lewis (Meet the Browns, Strong Medicine) has boarded black-ish in the recurring role of Dre’s (Anthony Anderson) overbearing mom.
Lewis’ character Ruby is described as follows: “She smothers pork chops with gravy, Dre with love, and would like to flat out smother Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), who feels the same way about her.”
RELATED black-ish Premiere: Did You Fall for ABC’s Newest Modern Family?
Lewis will make her first appearance later this season, according to the network.
RELATED Mistresses Renewed for Season 3
In its series premiere last Wednesday, black-ish drew 11 million total viewers and a 3.3 rating, demonstrating 96 and 85 percent retention out of Modern Family. For comparison’s sake, Super Fun Night (which led out of Modern Family‘s season premiere in fall 2013) only managed 75 percent retention.
Excited about Lewis’ joining black-ish? Sound off in the comments!
i HATE lil kids acting too damn grown on tv
older daughter played her minimal role perfectly
i liked charlie murphy's s-curl
i get they stole that successful father-son-cool grandfather at the dinner table vibe from Marty Kaan and House of Lies
and i think that's good
it's much funnier than i expected
the kids are better than i expected but so much of the focus is the oldest boy but i can see why so far...he's actually pretty funny
some of the scenes in last night ep were randomly funny...it's usually the shit non-race-related that is the most funny...
like dude coming to dinner with fast food...the bus stop scene...lil homie telegraphing his pass
it picks and chooses when to be heavy-handed and it somehow works with the overall pacing of the show...
the flawedness of AA on the show is interesting too...
there are some scenes that miss and even that i think is ok...the meeting with the fake Links group didn't connect but overall...this show has a lot of potential and as is...is still pretty fucking funny
I was dying when Anyhony dropped the project right before the credits because he was so mad.
Also when the kid was like "You are?" When he said they were good through a divorce crushed me.
And is it me or was Tracee's look when her daughter said she wanted to be a doctor because you can't tell if a doctor was responsible for death a look of horror?
Especially since it covers the same ground as the pilot with Anthony Anderson worrying about his oldest son not being Black. The head nod, the scrunched up face, and wanting his son to have Black friends rang more true to me than his son wanting a bar mitzvah and Anthony Anderson having a bro mitzvah instead. Plus, this episode was just flat out funny.
Way more relatable in terms of what black parents go through in the burbs.
Now the question is how many different ways they can milk this theme before getting tired.
I feel what every one is saying about how many times can they go to the "Blackness" well, I think if they work hard, they can do it multiple times but in subtle ways. It's a matter of how well, the writers develop.
ive tried to like this show, but i just dont think its funny.
i hate that tracy ellis ross character's name is rainbow. lol
the kids are not great imo, the younger kids are adorable but not really bringing anything to the roles
i do like the older son though, i think he's playing his part well
i did laugh a few times at the latest ep (head nods) but i feel like im forcing myself to watch hoping it gets better
And I could not get into it. It was cliched from top to bottom with jokes and scenarios that have been recycled from every black family television show within the past four decades dealing with "black-ish" issues. Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson (both great actors who are actually funny) couldn't even save the show for me.
Next......
If you are referring to black issues of racial stereotypes, identity crisis, idealizations (within the black community), preserving black culture in a white society (pro-blackness) and self-actualization in the midst of struggle? Plenty. The show's premise is just not that original. It had a couple of funny moments, but I tuned out afterwards. It wasn't interesting.
I'm not talking about JUST the latest episode. I'm talking about the overall theme of the show. You seem to take this personally (even though it's my opinion) and you're starting a senseless debate which confounds me. You act as though I made a repulsive 'yo mama' joke. The show is lackadaisical. I don't like it. It could be better than what it is. Get over yourself. There are other issues going on in the world besides the fact that I refuse to ride the bandwagon and give a nod to the show. Nice try, though. And yes I will give you references of black shows dealing with/ or similar to "black-ish". Hell, I throw in cartoons (and shows that received poor ratings) in the mix!
Starting from the 1970's on................
Good Times (A black family living in the ghetto, constantly facing social hurdles. Do I need to explain further?)
The Jeffersons (An upper class African American family that still dealt with issues of race)
Roc (Another show about a black family just barely surviving in the ghetto and coming to terms with being black in America)
Family Matters (The show's premise went downhill towards slapstick comedy, but there was one episode that explored discrimination when Laura's locker was spray painted with the N word. Also, there was an episode when Eddie was assaulted by a police officer because he was black)
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (Explored MANY race issues)
Everybody Hates Chris
The Parent Hood
The Cleveland Show
I'm pretty sure there are or will be plenty more Black sitcoms to emerge that will explore "black-ish" themes.
https://tv.yahoo.com/news/black-ish-away-murder-full-004400728.html
"As for "Black-ish," the Anthony Anderson comedy got a full back-nine
order and will air 22 episodes this season.
The "Black-ish" pick-up comes after the show's third episode drew
8.28 million viewers and a 2.9 rating among adults 18-49, up from the
previous week. "Black-ish" had had more consistent retention of
its "Modern Family" lead-in than any comedy in recent memory. "
also slightly referenced "the itis" with the shot of him sleeping at the table after lunch during the vote flashback. Pretty clever how they slipped that in.
wrong.
I'll admit that.
the show is great. It's funny and Larry Fishburne is now the reason I watch it. I didn't think he'd be a good fit possibly because I couldn't see him being anything but Furious--but naw, he's the glue to the show.
I kinda wish for humor sake they'd bring Cuba Gooding jr onto the show as Anthony Anderson's brother and make some BoyzNDaHood references
not the writing, that's taking me a while to warm up to.
I had it on mute for a while with closed captioning on (i was making dinner) and the jokes i saw in written form were actually pretty hilarious. I went back and watched it with audio and the jokes didn't hit as hard as i thought they would, especially the ones delivered by the kids and Tracy. Her character just isn't clicking for me yet.
I'mma keep watching though.
I know they didn't pay. I just thought it was a little obvious they stole the exact same bit. They could have changed it up a bit with the set up.
This show has really grown on me. I hated the first ep but now look forward to it. I like AA on it, still feel theres no chemistry between him and Tracee Ellis Ross, but the writing is good enough. the kids and the grandparents are the highlights to me
In response to Reply # 295
would have gone for 'grey grimace' because of the alliteration. that ni&&a do look hella grimacey, doe.
that snap been used before in my circles. that's a classic.
my kids was laughin at that shit when junior was going in on his pops and i hit them wit the 'Y'ALL DO KNOW that if you tried that it would be thermonuclear war up in here, right? i would oblitrate y'all on the spot'.
overall, the ep was a nice spin on the mfers who be teachin they kids karate to do self defense, and they end up beating ni&&as down.
i'm mad they let the bully go upside his head at the end.
