"Poll question: Do AF-Ams tend to date their skin color?"
Thu Apr-03-14 10:31 AM by Buddy_Gilapagos

I am always kind of, for lack of a better word, taken aback when I see two very light skinned people together. It just doesn't look natural to me.

Generally it seems like my light skin friends tend to seek out darker skin SOs and my darker skin friends seek out light skin SOs.

The only time I see a trend of people dating the same skin color is when folks are sort of an even middle of the road brown skin. They tend to date folks their same complexion.

I had a theory that all black people will eventually end up a sort of a middle of the road brown with enough time (all people in fact given enough time).

Anyone else notice that or am I making it up?

I am just trying to do some non-scientific research to see if there are any observable trends in skin color dating.

On an unrelated (or is it?) note: Y'all seen #desusgate? Apparently there are a growing amount of people on twitter who thinks he is white. OKP know better but not black twitter.

if you see a lot of couples where the woman is lighteer, i thinlk it has more to do with men preferring to to date lighter, not women preferring to date darker.

Ever express any particular likes and dislikes about a man's physical appearance? Ever turned down a man who approached you for a date? Ever went out of your way to get a particular guy's attention? Ever decided not to have sex with a guy who you liked as a person, simply because you weren't attracted to him?

I saw picture of this light bright girl I went to HS with. She married a dude who was just as light as her. It looked weird for reasons I can't quite explain.

I always was truly more attracted to darker men. Because my dad is light as hell, and so are all the men in his family. So I went for the opposite. My mom's side of the family is full of caramel colors like me. I ended up marrying darker. He's at least 3 shades darker.

And people in NYC seem to think I'm light skinned. Where in Chicago I'd never be considered light. Light skinned in NYC just means Dominican.

but pecan or dark caramel is about right. Next to my husband I look much lighter like this picture: http://instagram.com/p/lUmqHAipIQ/
My HS years I was always really dark cause I played soccer in the sun almost every day.

1)i think in general Af Ams go a few shades lighter or darker depending

2) i think when ppl say two same complexion folks dont look good together its usually meaning two (really) lite skin ppl, i never really here that said about two darkskin folks together

3) some ppl also say someone really lite doesnt look good with someone really dark, so what are u gonna do

now myself, i dont really have any complexion preference except for im least likely to date a REALLY lite skin person or a REALLY dark skin person (they arent automatically disqualified tho)

my two official exes, one was dark skin and one was lite, no one ever said me and the dark skin one looked good together but a lot of ppl said me and the lite one did (we actually could pass for brothers and were asked that often lol)

i think i looked good with both of them tho

and on that Jack N Jill shit...
It's pretty much an unspoken rule in well off light skin families that you don't marry outside your complexion.....
I know MANY a southern Black folks that dated/married light skin exclusively because of this unspoken rule.

but i have meet light women who had issues with their complexion and only dated dark men. And dark men who had issues with their complexion and only dated light women.

I have not really seen dark women with complexion issues who only dated light... they would just go straight to white. And I don't have a generalization about light men... LOL!

You've summed up what I've seen. I thought this was a known cultural thing, but I maybe I'm just being Virginian

Light with dark
Medium medium
Never dark with dark
Rarely light with light

Not that it's a hard and fast rule or anything.

The only place I've seen light with light is in families in the south that have tried to "keep light" for generations by actively choosing light partners and family pressure, although even that is fading now.

As in, what is the source of that attraction? Where does it come from?
Is it subconscious or a conscious decision.

Every black woman I've dated has been significantly darker than me or biracial (I think I've said it before, but when I say lightskinned, I mean 2 black parents)

Probably because my family is pretty dark.

But it's odd because the litebrites love me, as is the case for nearly every outward physical quality of mine; I attract the opposite the opposite.

In other words, I have a fan club of lightskinned, short and slim dudes. It's always at least two of those qualities, LOL

In response to Reply # 0

i don't think 2 light-skinned people together is as unusual as we think in our heads. and 2 dark-skinned people together is typical and unremarkable.

i know a couple who could both pass for white (seriously -- i met them out one time and overlooked them in the restaurant a few times cuz i thought they were white people), i know a real light-skinned sister married to a white dude, a real light-skinned dude married to a white woman -- and in all 3 cases their kids look straight-up white -- and i know more than a few high yellow couples and high yellow-caramel pairings.

back in the day i think it was more "transgressive" for light-skinned women to date/marry dark-skinned men, but now that it's really not, people just go off personal preference, and personal preference will either be for the same, or for opposites attract.

sidenote: are jay-z & beyonce a "light-skinned" couple? i'm not sure if jay is light-skinned or not

Well the whole thing goes out the window when marrying white. That just doesn't register as anything peculiar. I am just talking within black folks. I do notice that bi-racials tend to seek each other out which to me is the most common non-south light brite on light brite couples.

black celebrity skin colors are notoriously difficult to pin down because of how they're lit. unless you're unquestionably dark or just light light bright, it all blends. i'm still not sure what color halle berry is.

On my fathers side. My grandma had 10 kids so I probably have 100 light skin cousins on that side. My cousins kids have light skinned kids.

I think it's a generational thing

50s earlier yeah I think ppl married their color. The color privilige thing was accepted. Light was considered more beautiful and ppl were unapologetic about it.

70s ppl were on that black and proud, black is beautiful so dating black women with brown or dark skin was okay by then. This was my father and his brother.

By the 90s the ppl preferring light skinned folk were dating/marrying white and Asian in addition to light skinned the exception is well off black ppl who expect their kids marry black so they have to go with the lightest woman possible bc a white woman would be shameful.

There are a lot of exceptions. But overall men tend to date lighter unless they're so light they can't find anyone lighter.

I'm a shade or two lighter than what would be considered dark-skinned around here (I'm medium-dark, lol), and I attract a lot of women with light and medium complexions. I used to joke that I was too dark for dark-skinned women to take me seriously. Also, I've even had light-skinned jawns tell me explicitly that they aren't attracted to light dudes.

the weirdest thing is two lightskinned people tho.
typically they'll both go for extremes.

two darkskinned people is regular.

the only time you see two lightskinned people
together is if they're puerto rican.

their first daughter was a beautiful dark brown-skinned sista though. their subsequent 3 kids were all the color of their parents. the daughter married a light-skinned dude and the sons both married brown-skinned women.

and the parents of one of my friends from HS were both light. he married a brown-skinned woman though.

b/c in the midwest & west there's a whole lot of christopher
williams-esque lightness, that's not necessarily mixty in any
direct sense.

those ppl tend to date each other, and it doesn't seem all that
strange.

when i was in atlanta, it was nothing for the deep purplest black
dude to be w/a lightskinned chick, and they were both looking
for greatness in each other.

in new york pretty much the same is true, except dark on dark
isn't so weird, whereas light on light does make you double take.

i can say that the vast majority of any 'real' hollers i get where
ppl are actually putting in some kind of work, and not just
out here for sport, seem to come from lightskinned dudes,
esp. of the spanish variety.

but conversely, i've had darkskinned dudes approach me like
'i bet you don't like darkskinned dudes, BUT---'

just leading w/defeat. which is sad yet interesting.

yep and those are exactly the folks i was describing in my response. real old people too, in their 60s and 70s. i think generation matters, too, per my original comment in this thread.

yea in my mind i think that sort of "complementarity" is more "normal" for light-skinned folks. specifically among caribbean men, my understanding is that it's almost typical for a light-skinned dude to seek out dark-skinned women.

>but conversely, i've had darkskinned dudes approach me like
>'i bet you don't like darkskinned dudes, BUT---'
>
>just leading w/defeat. which is sad yet interesting.

i think they might have experienced dark-skinned women who compensate for their color complex by chasing light men, or who process it by being on that "being mary jane"-niece thing and wanting a light-skinned dude so they'll have lighter babies.

Some of these women that were fucking with me at the time, some were just friends or acquaintances. I think it's just not PC for a Black man to prefer lite-skinned women.

Edit: Yeah, it's kinda wack tho to be a dark dude with a chick that watches movies just to oogle dudes like the Rock and Vin Diesel.

light-skinned women" all the time. And it's not like it started with them, that preference is something that's been part of African-American culture for a long time. Maybe it's frowned upon for an college educated adult male to express it explicitly, but really that doesn't change anything.

he kinda killed their movement and all of the kids for the most part have either dated/married darker or dated/married other races

so seeing lights together wasn't unusual for me but most people i know don't date their skin color.

ive heard that line damn near everytime without fail...ironically only from dark chicks tho.

the light ones never brought it up or either straight up told me they prefer lightskinned.

on the other hand I've never heard a dark skin woman flat out 'say' she preferred light skin dudes, even if thats what she mostly dates

Being real, I don't even know if I am light skinned or Dark skinned. Plus, I don't look at skin color as a plus or minus in my book. No scale. Most women who try to get at me tend to focus on my height more than color

we keep it moving,

One thing Inhave noticed in my environment(very important) is that I do not see many very light skinned Blacks with very dark skinned Blacks. I do not see it! I may see a light skinned Black with a medium brown skinned person and, in some cases, dark brown person, but someone who is super dark? Nope!! On some real shit, I see more super dark skinned men(and in rare occasions women) with non-Blacks than I see SDS (wo)men with SLK (wo)men. For the record, I am not suggesting said extremes does not exist, but not to the point were it is considered commonplace. My opinion is that as much some Black folks like t dismiss colorist, I think it still exists where people on both ends of the spectrum have their limitations.
