I'm not ready for an electric car - hybrid is the I'm leaning.

Replacing a 2012 Honda Crosstour which is like a big-ass Accord that's also a few inches higher off the ground.
I'll probably get like $3k - $4k but maintenance cost keep going up every year now - seals in hard to reach places are breaking down. (https://www.kbb.com/honda/crosstour/2012/) Drives like a car. Bad gas mileage.

Love to keep the car around 40k or less if at all possible.

What to look at?
SUVs:
Honda CRV
Toyota RAV4
Toyota Venza
Lexus RX350
Hyundai Tucson

Cars:
Subaru Outback
Honda Accord
Toyota Crown (Expensive)
Toyota Prius (it's small)

It will not get the best mileage of the Hybrids but it drives well and the ride is so good. Space is good all around. I'm still using less gas than I was on my Elantra (up to half as much). I didn't test drive anything else on your list.

I kind of wish I went with the Touring version if only for wireless android auto. I don't know if the disconnects also happen with apple but it is annoying. I've had the same issues with different phones, cables and cars. Got a wireless android auto dongle, that disconnects too lol. I think the issues is on the usb connection on the car end. The dongle works well (although slow to connect) except for when I drive on lifted sections of the freeway. I can feel the bounce and it instantly starts disconnecting. Doesn't help that the cable is so short so the dongle just hangs from the port.

I hear it's loud on mountain roads because of the CVT.

It's still the closest thing to what I want because the MPG is great, it's roomy, it's comfortable, the stereo sounds good to me and while not "fun" to drive - it also isn't a drag.

I really wish I could rent one for a week or two - but no dealerships in town have it to rent - only Civics and Accords.

Not sure why USB does that in your, I'd definitely ask the dealer for help.

I drove a RAV4 this weekend and it's less roomy than the CR-V for sure.

I don't think it's horrible but it is noticeable.

Didn't think to ask the dealership about the USB. I just figured it's an Android thing since I have had the problem with different cars/cables/phones. Doesn't mean this port isn't bad.

In response to Reply # 15

I've never had a car with a digital fuel tank meter.

In my old cars I knew that even when the fuel meter got down to "0" I had 15 miles or 20 miles before I actually ran out of gas.

Yesterday I had the car tell me it needed gas and I put 12 gallons in it filled it up.

Edmunds says the fuel tank capacity is 14.0 gal.

Does it work that way with a digital meter too? Or do you have to believe it more?

More plastic-y, things more loose, noisier cabin, etc.

I know someone that upgraded (I *think* ~2014 to a ~2021) and that's one thing that jumped out immediately. Not sure if there are different CRV models or not. My pop also has an older CRV, but I'm not sure of the year. Still seems like a reliable Honda, however.

In response to Reply # 10

CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring SUV in color: Still Night Pearl

•Sticker price: $42,005
•Dealer discount: $2,500
•Selling price before dealer BS fees:$39,505

The dealer had added two packages for $995 each, or an addition $1990, which would have eatened that discount up.

I told them I wasn’t not interested in those packages, but if they could sell me an 8 year/120k mile extended Honda warranty for $2300 I’d do it.

Final selling price before taxes and fees was: $41,805,
($200 under MSRP and with a warranty until 2032.)

With tax, etc. etc, it was $45,583.20.

With the trade in value ($4500) and a down payment of %10 of the car value ($3,900) I ended up financing $37,183 with a 2.90% interest rate for 36 months with Honda Finance.

(And in my mind the selling price was not $41,805 but $40,490 because I’d have paid $1,315 this month to replace the tires and rotors on the Crosstour.)

I'm off to Youtube to watch demos on all the tech and settings!

>Curious how you arrived at those extended warranty figures in
>your negotiations?

(As as preface, the 2024 CRV Hybrid Sport Touring is in HUGE demand in San Diego right now, limited stock available and lots of buyers. Last year you couldn't get one for MSRP, at all - it was at least a $2k premium.)

The cost of the extended warranty from the dealer was $2800. I know that I could get the warranty for around $1400 from an out of state online dealer like Saccucci Honda and Hyannis Honda .

The dealer would NOT remove a $795 "security system" fee no matter what I did - so I offered to buy the extended warranty in it's place for $2100 (which is about what I could get the plan online + the security system fee that would not wave) so that he made the same profit and I didn't walk away from the deal and go through it all again somewhere else. PLUS I have bought the Honda Care locally at that dealer so maybe they treat me a tiny bit better when I get service.

They countered at $2,300 so I bit.

Plus they offered me HIGHER than the HIGH KBB trade-in for my car with 162,000 miles, some small body damage, that needs 4 new tires and needs brakes done NOW. Realistically they should have offered $3,500.

So, I said to myself "The cost of the car WITH 8years/120k mile warranty is under MSRP" PLUS the trade-in was good and the dealership is walking distance from my house, and a 2.90% rate -- plus my car shopping will be "done." and I bought it.

I have 60 days to cancel the warranty - I'll think about that in a few weeks when the paperwork comes in - I could get that money back (which probably hits the salesman in the pocket a bit) and recoup around $900 by buying the warranty online.

Other ways I could done better:
1)I could have waited for them to get one in stock that had non-premium paint - which would have saved $405.

2)I could have sold my car as is to a private party. Or realistically I needed to do the back brakes and rotors and then sale to maximize profit. That would have cost $500 out of pocket, and I might have netted $1,000 or $2,000 more at best. But advertising, showing the car, dealing with the buyers, etc. wasn't a priority for me.

I never feel great after buying a car - it's always really stressful.

I will never forget dude at Acura laughing at me when I told him cars will eventually start selling for less than MSRP again.

Still not quite where it used to be but thats a good deal you got. I was so split on what color to get, that was one I really considered. It basically came down to which one was arriving that week.

Enjoy it!

>if they could sell me an 8 year/120k mile extended Honda

I got a $2300 refund for the HondaCare since it had a $100 deductible and can be bought for much cheaper online.

Saccucci Honda has the 8 year, 120K with $0 deductible for $1,423, but they can't sell to CA. I could buy it and use my aunt's address in AZ. There's a dealer in CA that might do it for $1465, I have to contact them today.

So I got the car for $39,505 and as of right now my OTD price (taxes, fees, registration) is now $43,283.20.

For a hybrid with an MSRP of $42,005 I did "okay."

110. "Rebought Honda Care"
In response to Reply # 63

Got it from https://www.saccuccihondacare.com/

Same exact policy was $1423 instead of $2300.

Only issue you can't ship/buy if your mailing address is in California or Florida, so I had it sent to a relative's house in Arizona.

It works anywhere in the U.S. and doesn't matter where the car is registered.

These guys are just selling it at like $100 profit and not a $1000 profit and do volume.

23. "Anyone have thoughts on the Mitsubishi Outlander?"
In response to Reply # 1

I had an 07 that I got brand new and kept for 10 years. At the time it was a less expensive alternative to the CRV and Rav-4, but was a pretty similar vehicle and Mitsubishi had a much better warranty. So it was a good buy for me as I was just starting my career.

I know Mitsubishi seems to be a pretty obscure brand these days, but in looking for a new car this past fall, I got curious and looked them up - seems like it still offers good bang for your buck and looks really nice inside(I generally dislike the way all these crossover SUVs look on the outside).

Personally I was concerned with how these cars with all the new tech and turbo engines would hold up long term - I like to keep my vehicles as long as possible. So I went with more old school Toyota 4Runner partly for that reason - less tech that will break, a proven reliable engine, and a rep for going for 300,000+ miles.

I had a 14 Honda Accord. Great car, unfortunately rust started getting the best of it (I live in the snow belt and the salt they use on the roads is of the devil), and I moved on before it got bad. Shame, because it never had one issue in 7 years of driving it.

Still looking at a Hybrid car and an EV for our next 2 vehicles.

I rented a Santa Fe, that thing was niiiice. Really liked it.

My cousin just copped a Toyota Venza. Also nice, real nice lines on that one.

Also looking at the Grand Cherokee 4XE.

lastly, hate to admit it, the fam really loved that Chrysler Pacifica. Never thought we would want a minivan but we all loved that joint.

4. "This is my wife's first winter with her Model Y. "
In response to Reply # 2

We're in Michigan where temps have been super cold for the last couple weeks. She got a new Model Y last March, when we started getting spring temps so this is our first time dealing with winter.

There's a range decrease, but not significant. We'd been getting around 310-315 miles of range when charging to 100% (which we rarely do), and for the last month or so the full charge range is around 270-280 miles. The only time we noticed at all was two weekends ago when she did a couple back to back trips. We typically keep the charging limit at 80%, and after a couple back to back trips (From Ann Arbor to Detroit and back, and then from Ann Arbor to Livonia, MI and back) she was at 18% which is super low for our experience.

We haven't even installed level charging at our house because charging and range has been that much of a non-factor. The only times we've taken it to a super charger has been in cases like this, because trickle-charging at home from 18% to 80% would take like 36-48 hours. So I took it to the super charger and went up to 90%, that took like 30 minutes or so.

So the one takeaway I have for winter battery drain is that on Friday night before the weekend when she's more likely to do a longer trip to increase the charging limit from 80 up to 90 or so. You can actually automatically do that from the app on a schedule. It does also give us a reason to go ahead and have an electrician install a NEMA outlet so we can have level 2 charging at home.

As a disclaimer, we have a garage so her car isn't being parked in the complete cold at night. That might cause more of a battery drain for people who live in apartments or don't have room for their cars in their garage.

3. "literally went to dealerships this weekend"
In response to Reply # 0

My car is a 2010 and it's basically on its last leg, so I wanted to price the cars I was looking at just in case this POS broke down. I want a hybrid, so it was between the Camry, Prius, and Elantra (with the Camry initially being my preference). Only accessory I want is a sun roof, so unfortunately that's forcing me to get the more premium models although I would be ok with a base model.

Approximate prices out the door:

Elantra = $33.5k
Camry = $35k
Prius = $36.5k

Approximate delivery times:

Elantra = Immediate to two weeks
Camry = 4-6 months
Prius = 9-12 months

Company promo interest rates:

Elantra = 4.99%
Camry = 5.99%
Prius = none (so average rates, which seem to be 6.5% to 7.5%)

So I walked in thinking that I wanted the Camry and not really paying attention to the others, but I walked out really really liking the Prius.

My hesitation is the loooonnng delivery time, and my fear my car will die before it gets delivered. I'd have to put down a $500 deposit, and I'd hate to lose it if I end up having to buy something else. Additionally, if my car does die, my best option would be the Elantra, and honestly it's kind of ugly imo though their warranty is better than Toyota. If I can't get the Toyota hybrids, then I am pretty sure I would just get a regular gas car, cause I can't go without a car. I'm still trying to decide how to proceed.

Although this model year may not be impacted by the issue with the anti theft debacle, it may not stop someone from trying to steal it thinking it can be easily boosted. I’ve heard some insurers may increase rates or not insure it at all.

Funnily enough I called my insurance agent today to see what it would cost to insure the Prius ($70 more a month), but I didn't even think about the other cars. Lol, I'm pretty set on Prius I think.

That Elantra was just so unattractive in real life it kind of turned me off.

In response to Reply # 3

The Prius looked like a good option but I was impatient and the size wasn't really gonna work for me.

I think you mentioned before your current is an Elantra which I could see how it would be comparable in size to the Prius. I would say move on the Prius if it works for you and just hope it all works out.

The Camry is kind of a boat compared to older Elantra's and Prius. It was one I considered getting.

I wanted a sunroof/moonroof but honestly I keep that shade closed all the time.

Elantra is the best value but the built quality really does improve when you jump to Honda or Toyota. I'm split on the looks of it. I kind of like it but I feel it wont age well.

Best of luck.

In response to Reply # 12

Both the Camry and the Elantra were bigger than I thought, and I kind of took it for granted how small my current car is and the ease of being able to park in small spaces.

Ultimately I really really really want the Prius, but I just can't bet on waiting a year for it to be delivered plus it's the most expensive car on my list. I wanted to get a hybrid, but unfortunately due to the wait and the lack of (cute) yet reasonably priced sedans (too scared to drive a SUV or truck 😬) I am going to get a VW Jetta.

Went over it with my divorced parents and they separately both emphasized that this is the most practical choice, and if my car dies before the Prius is delivered how fucked I would be without a car. Plus it being 10k less with the options I want is a big deal, and VW is having a promotion with 1.9% financing. And just as important, it has one of the best gas powered mpg out, 29/42. Imma test drive it this weekend, but I'm 95% sure it's what I'm going to get.

Its the reason why I didn't consider the Accord hybrid because I was surprised that their mpg was so low.

Then when I was looking for gas powered car, I just liked the Jetta and it's very good mileage plus the price.

In response to Reply # 16

I say this as a VW fan who has a 2011 CC and loved the idea of a VW. My wife will not let me buy another one due to the timing chain issue.

My timing chain went out and I had to buy a whole new/used engine. I did get that money back and then some in a lawsuit but my brother didn’t have suck luck. His son’s passatt kicked the can on his graduation night.. smh.

If you buy one PLEASE find a Euro mechanic. You will save time, money and all types of stress. VW are expensive once they are out of warranty. Dont get the extended warranty, its a scam. VW uses plastic parts to make the car lighter. Euro garages use beefier parts that last longer.

My engine light comes on much less often now. When I used the dealership my car was always going back to the shop.

My sister has a Volvo and she had problems with her engine. I found her a Sweedish mechanic and she is much happier. The dealership mechanics are ass.

In response to Reply # 18

One of the main criticisms I saw of VWs is the high rate of mechanical failures, so I considering getting it just to be safe. I'm really hoping I wont encounter too much of that with it being a new car, but we know how these companies are nowadays.

The tip about Euro mechanic is good advice, but I don't know how much luck I would have finding one being here in Appalachia, but I'll definitely keep an eye out.

but I’ve always been mad about the extended warranty because you can only use it at the dealership I believe..

and IMO they aren’t the best. They keep you coming back.

better to save money over the life of the loan and use that for the Euro mechanic. Start looking now if you really want the VW. These cars run great once you find one.

In response to Reply # 20

with any used car that is out of the factory basic and powertrain warranties...but especially with a VW. I can't speak to which extended warranty Legs purchased, but there are MANY out there. Some dealerships only sell one brand, and some sell multiple ones...but I work in the industry and administer claims for an extended warranty company and I have never seen one that requires you to go back to the selling dealer...or even a dealership. But, yeah...just too many issues to be paying out of pocket. Look out for any VW with the 2.0l turbocharged joint. That engine is a grenade with the pin already pulled. It's in a TON of VWs and Audis. Other than that, electrical issues will be the biggest bugaboos. Look into a CPO (certified pre-owned) one if possible. At the very least, the manufacturer has some skin in the game, because they are declaring that even though this vehicle is used...we vouch (sorta) for its roadworthiness. Good luck!

In response to Reply # 32

I brought new, and I ended up turning down the warranty mainly because I am a lower milage driver, and I honestly don't think I am going to keep this car for more than five or six years (really wanted a hybrid). I feel like the factory warranty should be ok for the level of driving I do.

I was thinking about maybe getting an aftermarket warranty just to be on the safe side, but it's aggravating to think even a new car will have issues major enough to warrant having to get a policy.

I thought you were buying used. With a new vehicle...most brands you are going to have 3 years/36k for basic warranty and 5 years/60k for powertrain...there are some outliers that are longer like Kia/Hyundai. If you don't drive much, you are likely to reach the time, before the miles. In the case of new, though, you are right for holding off on the extended warranty because it's only going to participate once you are out of the factory warranty and you've basically paid for something you either never use or only get a small part of.

Just got a 4Runner a few months ago and couldn’t wait to drive it in the snow. We finally got a big storm a couple weekends ago and I was the only car at Dunkin’ on a Sunday morning. That thing is a beast in the snow. Of course, I’ll always be worried about the other vehicles sliding into me, but it’s nice to know I can get where I need to get even in bad conditions.

I put every feature available to the test and she showed out. Crazy how intuitive the Jeep responds.

In response to Reply # 0

Brought my Dad’s 1999 Honda Valkyrie Interstate home after he passed. I’ve really been thinking about letting it go and getting something much smaller. He and I never had exactly the same taste in motorcycles; he was old school cruiser touring type and rode Goldwings and the Valkyrie. I was exclusively BMW Sport Touring until I stopped riding 11 years ago when our 1st daughter was born.

Now I’m really feeling the new Honda Transalp and I think it’s an excellent fit for my riding style these days.

I didn’t like the new, square body style but it’s grown on me. With that said, I ain’t buying a damn thang. Unless my wife needs a car, which will likely happen before I need one.

What are your insurance rates doing lately? added my daughter to my policy and it more than doubled my rate. So I went shopping and found something much better. House rate went t down with the new policy too.

I drove the 3 row version. I can see that being too much.
if I get one, it'll be the 2 row as we don't need that 3rd row. my current jeep is also 2 rows.

I had a pathfinder before getting this car. kids were smaller and I thought the extra row made sense. turns out we really didn't need it and didn't get much use out of it.

47. "Is there an age limit for buying rims?"
In response to Reply # 0

and is $1500 too much money for said rims?

My car is dark grey and I think black rims would look nice on it, but $1500 seems so excessive for something that's purely there for aesthetics.

The problem is that I really really want them, but it just seems so colossally wasteful to spend that much money on something that doesn't add functionality to the car.

In response to Reply # 47

if you're buying the latest, trendy style or big ass rims, save that for the youngin's.

if they're tasteful and not doing too much, get'em!

I got rims not long ago. had the same thoughts about age. what helped decide was the rims I wanted actually come on different versions of my car. so having them on my car wouldn't look outta pocket or after market.

for pricing, check other options like fb marketplace. that's where I got mine. 900 for rims and tires. I think I got lucky though. the stuff I got came from a 2022 vehicle. they were basically brand new.

In response to Reply # 47

I put new wheels on my car like a month after I bought it and I’d do it with the next one. I think it’s whatever you like. My MIL boyfriend is 72 and dude bought a slightly used Chrysler 300, last summer…had the dealer throw some factory, chrome wheels on it. I dunno enough about the wheels to say if $1500 is excessive…the type of wheel, brand and size all matter. Also…if that’s just the wheels or a wheel and tire package. I bought my wheels on EBay for about $900 and had a local shop swap my tires over and mount and balance the new joints. You know what they say….it ain’t trickin if you got it. I say do some shopping, but at the end of the day if you like them and can afford them…go for it.

In response to Reply # 52

I had 2 charges, careless driving and driving 31 over the limit. After talking with the prosecutor, she removed the careless driving charge and reduced the 31 over the limit charge to 25 (guess that's a different tier?). As long as I go to traffic school, that charge will be removed too. Lastly I had to pay $147 in court fees.

Most importantly, no points on my license. I had been debating on whether or not to get a lawyer, but I'm ok with how everything ended without getting one.

we also were not a fan of the RAV4 or CR-V stylings at the time. she had a 2010 Honda Pilot before that, although I convinced her she didn't really need that much vehicle.

it's cool. compact SUV so unless you get the turbo, it's not going to have the power of something bigger. but the upside is you get great gas mileage. she doesn't drive on the highway much so it works for her.

we bought certified pre-owned and the price was right ($23k after taxes and fees). my wife doesn't want a regular sedan or car but I'm not into spending $40k on a vehicle no matter what (I have a Civic, of course).

no real issues at 50k miles right now, although there is a service bulletin about a lifter tick that almost sounds like rod knock. common with many Mazda's that use the Skyactiv engines from that era. we had the dealer look at it and also replace the tensioner last year and the noise has gone away for the most part. just got to keep up with the oil changes, more frequently than you think.

In response to Reply # 0

last week, wife and I went to Texas to visit our daughter. One of the maintenance guys that she works with, his wife runs the loaner car program for a local dealership. She hooked us up with a rental for $30 a day. The Joint was a 23 RAV4 XLE. I'm the long haul driver of the two of us. My wife is good for 2 or 3 hours, then she's done. It's a 10-hour drive. I took over with about 7 hours left. First of all...this thing feels like a TANK. It is SOLID. It feels very secure and connected to the road, even when I got a little heavy-footed in corners. I loved the screen. Huge screen. I connected my phone and had my Google Maps up....that whole interface is lovely. One thing that caught me off guard (and to be fair, maybe I would have known about this had this been a car I was actually in the market for and had been researching) was this...I'm a big cruise control guy when on road trips. I'm not trying to be the fastest and switching up lanes and shit. When things are clear, I lock in and enjoy the ride. I was set at 75 and a little ways up, was another car...out of nowhere, the car jerked and slowed down. I thought I was tripping, but it happened again in a different situation and that's when I realized that it kicks off cruise control if there is a vehicle ahead of you. The thing is...it does it when the vehicle is FAR ahead of you. Maybe it's something I could get used to and I didn't investigate to see if that could be de-activated. I didn't love it, though. It felt super heavy-handed.

On my CRV there's a setting for how close you want to tail behind someone -it's Adaptive Cruise Control. And there's a Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) too.

So you can set the tailing distance for "slose" and setting the front collision warning to "close" and you'll be able to get closer.

You can turn front Collison off entirely too.

Info on it for the CRV:

You can set it for distance or turn it off. Usually has 3 distances.

I hate turning cruise control on and off so this helps

what I don’t like is the steering lane option.. but I adjusted to it as well. Steering wheel is always moving to keep you in the center which feels weird. Then again, found myself not griping the wheel so tight on turns after a while

Caught me off guard the first time too.

You can adjust the distance you have to be from the car in front of you for it to kick in. I tried that for awhile and it was better.

Ultimately I want to drive my car, not have the car drive me so I turned that feature all the way off. I don’t have a tailgating problem, so I feel like I’ll continue to do just fine without that feature.

Always found it interesting that most people seem to stick to gray, black or white.

I've had green, blue (2x), black, red and gray. I think all pretty muted except for the red.

Red - 86 Cavalier Z24 (hit on highway after one month)

Maroon - 88 Toronado Trofeo FE3 (rust underside at 236K miles)

Orange - 04 Mazda 3 Hatch (single guy purchase, eventually having a family with road trips meant selling before her time @ 342K issue free miles)

Dark Green - 14 Tesla Model S (237K miles and counting, I really hate Tesla doesn't offer unusual colors anymore)

Inlaws always have some wild color Toyotas.
Mazda's red is the best out.

you can see from the picture I posted they're sitting right next to each other

and that is not the difference in size

if the comparison picture in that article were true, then the wheels of a new f-150 would be bigger than the wheel well of the old one and even in your mind you can know that is wrong.

the link in the article explaining that pickups have grown in weight links to a study about EVs and I don't see the data they're referencing (I might just be missing it but I looked and couldn't figure it out)

and most of what they're talking about is how cab size has grown and beds have shrunk which isn't exactly what anyone is talking about?

the problem is that the truck in the picture is an F-150, and it's not to scale.

that's why I mentioned it.

I understand you want to have a good point, the problem is that the source you're using is talking about some shit that's not relevant and also isn't backed up by facts

however, article after article talks about the size changes and it's not just about the cab.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/americas-cars-trucks-are-getting-bigger-are-front-blind-zones-children-rcna52109

“They’re heavy, and they keep getting taller and heavier,” Stockburger said. A tall, square hood is particularly difficult to see around, regardless of the driver’s height.

https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-safety/the-hidden-danger-of-big-pickup-trucks-a9662450602/

"A CR analysis of industry data shows that the hood height of passenger trucks has increased by an average of at least 11 percent since 2000 and that new pickups grew 24 percent heavier on average from 2000 to 2018."

even if the argument is they're not much bigger, they're still bigger and much heavier.

none of those are talking about the same issue

if you want to talk about more people buying bigger trucks so the average truck on the road is bigger, yep

an anecdotal quote based on no data is nothing. you get an analyst to say what you want to say so that you don't have to say it yourself, ask me how I know

that old truck also had a big square hood from the drivers' perspective.

In response to Reply # 0

Apparently he’s a car guy and loves VW’s, and every time he sees me he wants to talk about what features I have, the engine, the charging, range, my APR on the financing, you name it.

I’m not a car guy so I don’t know shit and don’t really care about a lot of the questions he asks about it. I keep telling him, yeah I don’t really know what a dual motor is and don’t know if it has one.

It’s been a cool conversation piece since I got it because everyone wants to know about it and I’ve never had that experience with a car, but he’s extra with it. I keep trying to steer the convo in other directions but nope, he wants to know all about my ID4.

Another coworker has a Tesla and he’s actually thinking of switching to the ID4 and that was a trip. But yeah this thing draws more attention than expected.

My son loves the hell out of it because, in his words it looks, feels and sounds like a spaceship.

Charging stations are wild because you typically have two camps from what I’ve seen:

-people who are super helpful and social about it, and I’ve done my beat to reciprocate that spirit

-people who are aggressive. Today a lady was parked off to the side of the charing station at an angle, and while I noticed it, she was far enough that I definitely wouldn’t count her as being “in line”, so thought nothing of it, especially since there was an empty space at the far, complete opposite end, and so I pulled into that spot.

This lady comes walking up and says, “I’ve been sitting there waiting for a long time, so regardless of whether the car next to you pulls out first, I’m still parking there and using it first”

Now, had she had a different approach. I *may* have been cool about it and understood.

Maybe.

But with that approach? Nah.

I told her, “you should have pulled in then”.

She starts saying something in response and I just rolled the window up on her.

My boy was on speaker with me and started cracking up.

She lucked out and a different car pulled out next to the one next to me, but dude next to me pulled out right after. It worked out for both of us. But she really tried to flex on me on some “this is how it’s gonna be”.

In response to Reply # 0

but I’m not sure there is anything I like that isn’t wild expensive.

I’ve only driven a Model Y and while I grew to like it, fuck Elon

another part of me is leaning hybrid simply because I don’t really like the sparse interior of most EV’s.

Won’t have to make this decision for a while hopefully but looking at cars for the wife got me going.

So... I've got some younger millennial kids gravitating around my wife and my Gen X orbit. Makes me happy and wary at the same time. Whatever. One of the young ladies has a '16 Camry and wants to do some upgrades to the sound. Half of me wants to regale her with tales of swapping the entire audio from our '96 Saturn SL2, '87 Grand National, and numerous Hondas, Acuras, and Chevys. But, while the mechanics are the same, the tech is vastly different. Between the integration most modern cars have where you stand to lose a ton if you remove the head unit, you also have to figure the best way to incorporate the features they want in a system (CarPlay/Android Auto, GPS, video playback, etc.) and keep the native controls they have (steering wheel buttons, rear camera, etc.) working. The lazy part of me would recommend a knockoff Android based unit that hacks into most of the onboard systems. But, knowing many run an older, forked version of Android, there may workarounds that they may not want to deal with. Name brand setups will cost more and may have fewer options, but should be more reliable. Hard to say what direction to steer the youth toward, especially since I do NOT want to do IT/tech support.

All that said, I'm going to upgrade to Sync3 in my Fusion and rock Android Auto with upgrades speakers in all the doors and keep stepping...

In response to Reply # 111

crutchfield worked for me. all the controls work from the head unit. there's a learning curve because everything is in a different place from the stock radio.

I was worried about losing features/functions, but it's all there and works as expected. the proper adapter and new face plate make it all happen. it was kinda pricey.

the sound from it, particularly android auto, is way better than I expected. it's amazing how much difference a head unit can make. thought about getting speakers, but don't want to do put much effort into it. so I'll live with the stock speakers. they're good enough for what I need.

you probably already know this, but definitely check crutchfield to see if the '16 camry can be upgraded. my cuzin recently got a car, not a toyota, but it can't be changed out.

Only place my dad would get car stereo equipment from. To this day they still send catalogs to his house.

Reminds me of an install we did. My buddy was obsessed with Acura. Copped an early gen Legend. Bose system. PITA to get around (though early Bose weren't too difficult to get around). We ordered the stereo, amp, subs, speakers all from Crutchfield. But, once we got the door panels off, the speakers didn't match. Apparently Honda had a mid year switch that wasn't completely documented. We were on the line with Crutchfield going over VIN numbers and production dates. They arranged to exchange the speakers for the ones in the car, and we sent them photos of the interior so they could update their master sheets (this was like '99-'01, so it took some effort to get those digital pics over)

Still the first place I shop and recommend.

114. "bought a Chevy Bolt EUV Premier in November"
In response to Reply # 0

Wish I had done it sooner. I have zero complaints though there is a small learning curve. Charging stations are interesting because it's completely different wherever you go. Some places have tons of chargers (Atlanta), some have a moderate amount (Charlotte), and some have little to no chargers. Once I got a level 2 charger at home (free with GM electric vehicles) I have not had to go a public charger since.

My only issue is that the Bolt does not fast charge, even at level 3 chargers. That’d be the main reason to switch to something else in the future, but like I said I'm not going to public chargers on the daily anymore so it's minor. My previous car was an Equinox so I am looking at those EVs once they finally come out because they are very similarly priced and I would like to have a bit more size and space.

I have similar experiences as a previous poster who mentioned people having tons of questions. It’s pretty interesting. I always get, "So it's FULLY electric? No hybrid at all?" or some variation of that convo. Some seemed genuinely shocked that other EVs exist that aren't Tesla and that it's not crazy expensive.

I'm also starting to see a divide between the Tesla vs non-Tesla crowd. Starting to be iPhone v Android all over again, but I guess this was inevitable. Whenever I would be at an Electrify America station for instance and run into a Mach-E owner, EV6, Ford F-150 Lightning, Mercedes EQE/EQS, etc. ... they would always be mad friendly and what to strike up a convo wanting to know about your car and experiences and whatnot. Whenever I would run into Tesla owners slumming it at a non-Tesla Supercharger, they would usually be the less friendly ones. Of course this is just my observations.

its the only EV I’ve rented so not sure if its much better or worse than the others but that dude has gone above and beyond to let me know he is a POS.

this would be the city car but it needs to fit 4 comfortably.

we just got a hybrid for long trips.

In response to Reply # 115

Even before Elon became a full on white supremacist weirdo, a lot of people didn't mess with Tesla because it was a little too out there for most. Too different from a "regular" car. Now you can get an EV from Chevy, Ford, VW, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, you name it. Even Honda finally getting on board. So if there's a brand you already rock with, chances are you'll be able to find something from them. That more than anything seems to be what's moving the needle for a lot of people. Most are pretty moderately priced too, unless you're going for a luxury brand.

I've been keeping an eye on what I see in the neighborhood and I'm starting to see more people going for non-Tesla EVs for sure.

In response to Reply # 0

but then it stoped coming on after a few days.

I got lazy and went to the place up the street because the Euro place is a 15 minute drive and is only open weekdays.

They think its the oil and filter that did it.

Hope that fixes things.

As much as I talk about new cars I dont want the new payment that comes with it.

In response to Reply # 117

how much money and how often are the fixes vs being locked into a payment for years.

I gave up my pathfinder in 2018 when problems started getting more frequent and in some cases would cost more than the car was worth.

hopefully your issue is an easy, cheap fix.
