"Songs where the radio version is the "official" version "

The uncensored version of Eminem - My Name Is came on my playlist this morning, and I was so confused. I'm singing along in my head and nothing was matching up.

The album version is terrible compared to the radio version. It should be erased from history

Where the single mix is what everyone knows but a different version is on the album. I like both versions of Crossroads.

Other examples:
California Love
Buddy
Bag Lady
Fire It Up

I'm blanking but I'm planning to make a playlist of these so add on lol

songs blowing up off MTV/BET which would be the radio edit versions of songs.

For me growing up in a STRICT household where I wasn’t allowed to buy albums with the Explicit tag on them, those radio/video versions were all I knew. I still remember one of the worst times I got in trouble as a kid was my dad finding the unedited cassette single for Hit ‘Em Up which had the unedited version of How Do You Want It as the B side. He made me sit down and listen to both songs with him. He was PISSED.

Given that I remember being shocked when I went to college and started buying albums from the early 90’s and hearing the actual unedited versions of songs I thought I knew…

My parents saw the album title and it didn't register with them at first so they bought it for me. I was 8.

Shortly thereafter, I'll never forget, we were at a family reunion on the lake and my mom and uncle found my tapes laying around, and were reading the song titles of the Onyx album. They got to "Black Vagina Finda" and about fell out of their seats laughing. Never saw that tape again.

I tried in vain to convince them Parental Advisory albums were OK for the next few years but had no luck. Literally had them sit down with me to watch music videos (which were heavily edited !) and they still wouldn't budge lol. I think one of the videos was the Let Me Ride video. They prolly noticed things I wouldn't have picked up on at that age. Also the "edited" versions of Death Row songs were still hella vulgar lol.

Whole tape was comedy with the edits.

Also remember this religious dude (was old enough to drive, so we were in our late teens) had the dirty tape versions of some albums, but he knew where the curses were so he'd tap the FFWD button on the car's tape deck to skip over them

levels of edits because the album versions were just so explicitly explicit lol…to the point that the radio edit versions were still too vulgar for MTV/BET so they’d have an even heavier edit for the video. Also some of their edits were hilarious with the sound effects inserted in and the slang words that replaced the original cuss words with even more foul meaning, but they’d get away with it because the replacement slang wasn’t mainstream enough to be known by the censors lol…

>Also the "edited" versions of Death Row songs were still hella vulgar lol.

Growing up, I caught the video for K-9 Posse's "This Beat Is Military" on either Yo! or Rap City and loved it. (It was like 1989) Ran out and bought the album that weekend, and was crushed to hear that the version on it was completely different.

Like 15-20 years later, I found the 12" in a used record shop, with the video version, and got amped. Threw it on the turntable listening station and.... wooooooooooooo that shit was wack AF. Then I played the album version that I'd initially disliked, and discovered that it aged a lot better.

That era was horrible when it came to that practice. Many a pissed off disappointed fan was made from acts who (to paraphrase KRS One) made a wack album then remixed it for their single. We can’t count how many times cats got burned because the far superior radio/video version, that wasn’t labeled as such, had prompted them to go cop the album only to be met up with the trash album version.

Since 1976

Hov even plays his 2nd (radio) verse live

Legend has it Bun and Pimp C so thoroughly fried Jay that he felt compelled to go back and do another verse. Which, fine…but Jay’s 2nd verse is awesome and isn’t on the album. It’s irritating

this song was homophobic because Punks = gay and the verse about "fuck up a faggot". but the clean version doesn't have the faggot part so there was a huge argument about this...

but the clean version does say sissy...

edit again to say, i just listened to the album version and he does say he is not down with gays... and this is not on the clean verson.... so yeah, it's homophobic... I guess the professor was right... but the class mainly argued that "punks" did refer to gay men and this song wasn't about beating up gay men... which is what the professor was saying the song it about...

so I was thrown when I heard the original. Seemed like its all they played early on that summer in NYC in 1993.

I thought the original was a remix.. lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDYVKz2EsHg

it was so smooth I thought the original was clunky at first. First one is still dope too. Especially when you hear the sample break down at the beginning of this video.

Cuz, to me, this remix sounds clunky lol. I just keep hoping to hear the original beat kick in but it doesn't.

I think they did have a video for the album the album version but the remix was more popular.

Some of the cursing sounds forced. The single sounds more natural, as if it’s the real song.

I THINK they aren't asking about remixes as in having a different beat. It's more about songs where the edited version is actually better than the explicit one. I think something like Big Pimpin would qualify with the addition of the second verse but something like Bag Lady is a different question. Could just be any song where the single is different than the album version though.

when I got it home it said "edited version" on the tape, but when I played it it was the uncensored version. I don't know how often that happened though

On the way to spring break. We were doing a road trip from MA to FL senior year in college. We listened to that album, the edited version, front to back, all the way to, and all the way back from Florida. It was funny at first.

version would get heard WAY more than the album version. Because unless you specifically bought that album, you were hearing the radio/video edited version. And hearing it again and again. When I was a kid I might buy 2-3 albums a month. That’s a lot of albums not getting bought and a lot of singles that I only knew the edited version of.

So then when you’re hearing the album version 20-30 years later, but your nostalgic memory is the edit, there’s a disconnect on what you might enjoy more.

It's a nostalgia thing for sure. And also, the radio edits got the artists the exposure, so they are (or, were) important on a number of levels.

Greg Street used to use it for this contest called “Don’t Say Ahhh” (because of how Erick Sermon started the song) where you had to speak on a topic for 60 seconds without saying “uhhhhhh”.

The edits are so crazy, I had no idea what the real song was saying until I downloaded it from AudioGalaxy.(RIP)
