A lot of the original school legends are grumpy, grouchy, and kinda bitter (often understandably so). And of those legends, Melle Mel is grumpier, grouchier, and more bitter than most.
And he’s ALWAYS been like this. He used to go Public Enemy shows in the clubs and boo them. He battled KRS back in like 87/88, by all accounts get waxed, but refused to concede, walking out of the spot like he was the undisputed champ. Method Man has said that Melle Mel has even refused to shake his hand.
(Here’s that clip. Stuff about Mel starts at around 4:30, but the whole thing is pretty Germaine to the convo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=todsxR3Pk8s)
For emcees like Mel, hip-hop has always been about completion. So I’m sure he saw this whole thing as an extension of that.
This kinda reminds me of the whole Control Remix drama 10 years ago, where every emcee from the emcee from the East Coast got into their feelings over Kendrick’s verse. Or another instance 10 years ago, where Casual wrote a whole ass 10-minute dis track towards Eminem because Em made “Rap God.” Problem is, with the nature of the Internet and social media, everyone takes everything so fucking literal, so now Mel feels the pressure to apologize for something that would have just gone away in a few weeks.
So yeah, this is another example of how times change.
