"DACA is over (in 6 months). Thoughts?"

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/trump-dreamers-daca-immigration-announcement-n798686

I know Sessions was bustin all kinds of nuts reading that statement this morning.

Do you know any DREAMers? Do you think Congress will pass something within 6 months to stop any kind of action (lol)?

I think its funny that during the muslim ban episode, the line was "the power of the president (on immigration) will not be questioned".
Now it's "there's nothing the president can do on this immigration issue. Unconstitutional"

Also, the rationale they are using to sell this as a good thing is that these 800,000 Dreamers are taking the jobs of black and hispanic American citizens. So you are racist if you are against this

this is a form of socio-economic warfare. the feds will probably try to march into schools and we'll have to move as a education community to respond. a huge population of my LA students are in this category and may see this nightmare come down on them. some could end up dead when dropped into a conflict zone down south. a student sobbed to me when she heard i'd be screening on great reality tv ep on immigration (30 days) and told me her dad has not been communicating at all for months after he was shipped out and they have no idea what has happened to him.

The GOP with Trump thinks that Latinos/Hispanics will sort of be "wishy washy" because Trump seemingly appeals to a segment of that population (the Marco Rubio's, etc.) who want to be with a "strong winner" (that's Trump's "front).

Trump won more Latino's than Romney did. So, something about Trump despite "rapists" and "building a wall" did appeal to Hispanics/Latinos in the election to some degree (more than Romney did in 2012).

So....

With this and the Sheriff Joe pardon, will any resentment really stop Latinos/Hispanics from liking the GOP?

There is a theory the more "raw" you are with somebody, the more they respect you. Trump seems to be betting on that with Latinos/Hispanics.

not saying there's only 2 types, but in general the ones I've met and know are:

1- military/cops/law and order: love the tough guy approach, lots of machismo, my way or the highway.
Big part of Latino culture, the caudillo (strongman) type of government (Think Putin, Chavez, Castro, etc).

Cuban-Americans hate Castro right? but he (and now Raul) are all they've ever known.
They know of no other form of government except the tough guy.
In Cuba they knew better than to fuck around.
Fidel is the father of Trump's style. Left/right wing? same bird.

Also Cubans could GAF about immigration and dreamers.
They got preferential treatment (green cards within a year of arrival and welfare) for 50 years until Obama (thankfully) put an end to that shit.

2- socially conservative (anti-abortion, anti-LGBT, evangelical/religious):

They've made the same pact with the devil that the GOP has. Ignore/forgive his fuck ups because he can advance their agenda. They're adamantly against abortion, gay marriage (gay anything actually), legal weed, and anything progressive.
This contingent is also the "I came here legally!" crowd.
Never mind that we're talking about kids who were brought here

Latinos in America are a nation within a nation
we got everything from hardcore alex jones nutjobs to bernie bros
This is why I laugh/cry everytime I hear "the latino vote"
THERE IS NO SUCH THING

because the democratic party doesn't have any voice at all in state government and democrats don't contend in most congressional districts.

at the moment if you don't live in a city of a million+ or the valley, you don't have options.

my congressional seat belonged to a tejano democrat but got gerrymandered after he lost it. the current district is basically designed to pack as many white people as possible in the center with some color around the edges. it was ruled unconstitutional last month, but alito pressed pause on the redrawing for 2018, soooo....

my state rep switched parties a few years ago, and even though he does check some of those rural sensibility/family values boxes, those are more fluid than i think most people realize.

abortion is a pretty hard line, but republicans don't have any standing at all when it comes to a lot of other issues for catholics and many other christian churches.

are here w/papers. either born here or emigrated and got citizenship.

plenty of them have no time for immigrants who are here w/o papers. lots of resentment. lots of resentment about immigration being branded as a Latino thing in the first place...b/c it ain't like Latinos are the ONLY ppl who emigrate here w/o papers. so it's easy for them to vote on those feelings. Trump was speaking their language. to them when he said 'they're rapists' the folks here w/papers knew he wasn't talking about them - he was talking about them other motherfuckers. and fuck those motherfuckers - they're fucking it up for the rest of us.

Mueller has to hurry up and get enough dirt to have Trump impeached. Acts like these are turning the American public against him gradually anyway so when the investigation ends the American people will slide with Mueller.

In response to Reply # 15

the ppl won't care.

the Congress won't impeach.

Mueller's investigation is for history.

and possibly for a NY state prosecution if it comes to that.

but it's mostly about creating a record of the Trump Admin's misdeeds and Congressional failure to act on what was known.

doubtful anything of consequence will happen to Trump b/c that's primarily a political question (impeachment is 100% political, not legal). Congress has not shown any backbone - largely b/c the ppl who voted for these GOP Congressfolks and the ones who voted for Trump don't give a damn how awful Trump is or what proof is put before them. they're supporting him for emotional reasons - not logical ones. if 'grab 'em by the pussy' didn't turn those folks off nothing else will.

so this is about how history will treat all of this more than it's about what's going to happen right now. IMO, at least. but hopefully i'm wrong and when ppl see proof of Trump and the admin's misdeeds they'll revolt. i just have no hope of that considering all that's already happened.

fuck you.

By ending Daca, Donald Trump has declared war on a diverse America
Carol Anderson

This latest move is part of the Trump administration’s effort to make the United States a white-dominated nation again
Carol Anderson is the author of White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of our Racial Divide
Donald Trump
‘His message is clear: in the United States, only few are welcome and even fewer are equal.’

Tuesday 5 September 2017 12.31 EDT Last modified on Tuesday 5 September 2017 14.08 EDT

Less than a year into his presidency, the evidence is undeniable. Donald Trump is an equal opportunity bigot. In addition to everything else he’s done, he is now dismantling the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (Daca) program. Doing so will kick out nearly 800,000 immigrants, who came to the United States as children and were promised amnesty and the ability to work and go to school.

Unfortunately, this is just the latest in his effort to ban, deport, disfranchise and criminalize every key demographic that did not fit into his constituency’s vision of a white-dominated nation.

Although his racism was easily visible on the campaign trail, many chose to write it off as some kind of political gimmick and convinced themselves that Trump’s core attribute was his business acumen. They were wrong.

While Trump has proved feckless, distracted, and bored with the intricacies of most policies, he has demonstrated a relentless focus on obliterating the political, legal, and cultural spaces required for an increasingly diverse America. His message is clear: in the United States, few are welcome and even fewer are equal.

Within the span of several months, Trump has laid out a policy and rhetorical agenda that 56% of Americans now recognize could tear the United States apart. In addition to White House efforts to roll back reproductive rights, equal pay for women, the citizenship rights of transgender Americans, and the voting rights of minorities and the poor, Trump has served up a steady stream of racial and ethnic bigotry to his hardcore supporters, further polarizing the nation.

When many recoiled at the spectacle of torch-bearing white nationalists screaming antisemitic epithets, Trump, to his constituency’s delight, saw “very fine people” marching with neo-Nazis and Klansmen in Charlottesville, Virginia.

While the nation reeled from a string of fatal shootings of black Americans by police, including that of pregnant Charleena Lyles, who was gunned down by the Seattle police department in front of her children, Trump actually encouraged law enforcement to engage in further acts of brutality and quit being “too nice” to suspects.

He followed up with an edict to funnel military-grade weaponry into local police departments, which would inevitably, as Amnesty International noted, transform cops into occupying armies in black and Hispanic neighborhoods.

The presidential pardon of the notorious Maricopa County, Arizona, sheriff Joe Arpaio follows many of the same patterns, especially in the way it was designed to “please his base”.

For decades, the sheriff targeted and arrested Latinos as if every last one of them were violent criminals illegally in the United States. Even when faced with a court order to cease and desist, Arpaio flaunted his disdain for the legal system, went after the trial judge like he was a “political enemy”, and continued to racially profile and jail Latinos at will.

Finally, in July 2017, the sheriff was convicted of contempt. But just as with the white supremacists in Charlottesville, Trump didn’t see a criminal. He saw a kindred spirit, who was a “great American patriot” who had “done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration”. Trump therefore relished pardoning the disgraced sheriff and timed it just as Hurricane Harvey slammed into Houston, Texas, to get better ratings.

The message was obvious: nationwide racial profiling had now been blessed from on high, and Latinos, in echoes of the infamous Dred Scott decision, had no rights that a white man was bound to respect. Carlos Garcia, director of Puente, an immigrant rights group, said: “Now, he’s just spitting in their face, disregarding their pain and how they suffered in the hands of Arpaio.”

Even in the midst of a record-breaking hurricane that dropped 50in of rain on the fourth-largest city in the US, one of Trump’s first thoughts was not to deal with the collapsing infrastructure that exacerbated the disaster, nor to comfort the thousands who lost their homes and possessions, but, rather, to raise the specter of a horde of Mexican immigrants crossing the US border.

His morning tweet that day was all about “Mexican criminals” and building “the wall”. This unhinged fixation had already led Trump to threaten to shut down the federal government if he couldn’t get funding to erect his 2,000-mile prophylactic barrier along the US-Mexico border.

But it’s not just about the insanity of keeping immigrants from entering “a nation of immigrants”. Under the shroud of expelling so-called dangerous criminals,
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has gone on a deportation tear that has ripped parents away from their children, yanked hard-working productive members of society out of their communities, and terrorized many from accessing desperately needed services – including being able to flee a deadly hurricane.

And now there’s Trump’s latest decision to remove the protections and promises of Daca and push immigrants, who have lived in the United States since they were children, out of the country.

Trump’s torrent of policies and executive orders has come as fast and as brutal as the firehoses in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963 that slammed black protesters up against brick walls. At that time, Eugene “Bull” Connor, the city’s commissioner of public safety, thought the force of the water and the cold, calculated way in which it was delivered would be more than enough to silence the cries for citizenship and equality. He was wrong then. Just as Donald Trump is wrong now.

Yes, I know lots of DACA recipients. I've helped many fill out their forms and get their paperwork in order.
Everything about this is bullshit.

but w/the land acquisitions needed to secure property on which to build the wall...the shit will be tied up in multiple courts for years...maybe decades. and the logistics of actually building it? insane. it just...i don't see it happening no matter how much $ is thrown at it. they'd build a piece of it. and that would likely be more like a fence than a wall.

and then after it's built it's gotta be maintained. and staffed. i don't see many future allocations for it. if it goes up i bet it comes down.

the whole thing is stupid.

fuck you.

Will it be enforced? There were local governments and local police defying orders during the Muslim ban. Could we see more of that? I honestly think it could come down to this. His approval ratings are so low and centrists have abandoned him. I was very pleased to see the reaction to the muslim ban. Mayors offering their offices as places of refuge. Police chiefs offering police headquarters as places of refuge. Not sure how that would look in this context though. The stage is set for the local governments to basically ignore any policy that comes from the top.

Immigration can be a controversial topic. We all want safe, secure borders and a dynamic economy, and people of goodwill can have legitimate disagreements about how to fix our immigration system so that everybody plays by the rules.

But that's not what the action that the White House took today is about. This is about young people who grew up in America -- kids who study in our schools, young adults who are starting careers, patriots who pledge allegiance to our flag. These Dreamers are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper. They were brought to this country by their parents, sometimes even as infants. They may not know a country besides ours. They may not even know a language besides English. They often have no idea they're undocumented until they apply for a job, or college, or a driver's license.

Over the years, politicians of both parties have worked together to write legislation that would have told these young people -- our young people -- that if your parents brought you here as a child, if you've been here a certain number of years, and if you're willing to go to college or serve in our military, then you'll get a chance to stay and earn your citizenship. And for years while I was President, I asked Congress to send me such a bill.

That bill never came. And because it made no sense to expel talented, driven, patriotic young people from the only country they know solely because of the actions of their parents, my administration acted to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people, so that they could continue to contribute to our communities and our country. We did so based on the well-established legal principle of prosecutorial discretion, deployed by Democratic and Republican presidents alike, because our immigration enforcement agencies have limited resources, and it makes sense to focus those resources on those who come illegally to this country to do us harm. Deportations of criminals went up. Some 800,000 young people stepped forward, met rigorous requirements, and went through background checks. And America grew stronger as a result.

But today, that shadow has been cast over some of our best and brightest young people once again. To target these young people is wrong -- because they have done nothing wrong. It is self-defeating -- because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel. What if our kid's science teacher, or our friendly neighbor turns out to be a Dreamer? Where are we supposed to send her? To a country she doesn't know or remember, with a language she may not even speak?

Let's be clear: the action taken today isn't required legally. It's a political decision, and a moral question. Whatever concerns or complaints Americans may have about immigration in general, we shouldn't threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own, who pose no threat, who are not taking away anything from the rest of us. They are that pitcher on our kid's softball team, that first responder who helps out his community after a disaster, that cadet in ROTC who wants nothing more than to wear the uniform of the country that gave him a chance. Kicking them out won't lower the unemployment rate, or lighten anyone's taxes, or raise anybody's wages.

It is precisely because this action is contrary to our spirit, and to common sense, that business leaders, faith leaders, economists, and Americans of all political stripes called on the administration not to do what it did today. And now that the White House has shifted its responsibility for these young people to Congress, it's up to Members of Congress to protect these young people and our future. I'm heartened by those who've suggested that they should. And I join my voice with the majority of Americans who hope they step up and do it with a sense of moral urgency that matches the urgency these young people feel.

Ultimately, this is about basic decency. This is about whether we are a people who kick hopeful young strivers out of America, or whether we treat them the way we'd want our own kids to be treated. It's about who we are as a people -- and who we want to be.

What makes us American is not a question of what we look like, or where our names come from, or the way we pray. What makes us American is our fidelity to a set of ideals -- that all of us are created equal; that all of us deserve the chance to make of our lives what we will; that all of us share an obligation to stand up, speak out, and secure our most cherished values for the next generation. That's how America has traveled this far. That's how, if we keep at it, we will ultimately reach that more perfect union.

Here fucking here.

Let's see what happens when enforcement officials are asked to round up dreamers who've been going to their kid's birthday parties for more than a decade. I have faith in Americans.

But I definitely don't think this is gonna manifest. From the mixed signals coming from Trump...it could be a disgusting, stomach-churning bargaining chip for some other issue. But even if they DO try to actually round up close to a million people....I just can't see Americans allowing for that to happen. There are already several mayors and police departments across the country saying they will protect the dreamers as their fellow citizens.

I remember we all talked about this during Trump's campaign with his threats of deportations. I truly think local institutions will break the law in standing up to this type of policy. Speaking for myself...I'm far from a leftist activist or antifa or anything like that. But even I would get involved in civil disobedience if a worse case scenario developed. It wouldn't just be activists anymore. It would be almost everyone. Especially in the urban areas where most of the dreamers live. Moderate conservatives, centrists, neo-liberals, libertarians (along with the usual far-left activist types).....I think people will be surprised that almost EVERYONE in the major cities will fight back together. It could be a moment of unity that society is probably desperate for right now and EVERYONE should be voicing support for them. Human barricades....hiding neighbors in your home....physically overtaking immigration holding cells and transportation vehicles. I'm talking extreme shit that common people will be down for.

That being said. I also understand it's a hella of alot easier for me to say 'don't worry, this won't happen' because I'm not amongst those targeted. We should call this what it is. Psychological terrorism. 'Prepare to leave the United States'. I am so fucking angry that dreamers have to read that shit. They are Americans by every measure of the word and everyone should be ashamed that they are getting treated this way.

I'm not a religious person...but the best way I can describe Trump and Sessions (without resorting to less effective cursewords) is that they are absolutely Godless. Jesus wept.
