"Twitter is the next MySpace"

not because they're oversaturated and not picking up new users
or because they can't even find a buyer

But just like MySpace, it's overhyped and being destroyed by their own users
MySpace died slowly as it went from social network to online brothel and awful user experience (Facebook was the nail in the coffin)
Twitter is also dying slowly as it goes from megaphone news source to troll heaven and racial/sexist abuse platform

Remember this post in 3 years when Twitter gets bought by Justin Timberlake and "rebranded"

The worst part for me is after talking so much ish about the platform I finally got around to liking it and using it often.

It's salavagable, but it needs some drastic changes in my humble.

Serious question. Cause I love Twitter and think it's insanely useful as a minute-to-minute news source, etc. I know it's failing (though I'll never really understand why) but I'm really not sure what changes could be made the salvage it ?

Twitter can't figure out how to monetize itself. They're just hoping to cash out and get acquired at this point.

They have revenue problems (tied to growth), but they make money. Lots of it.

and to get any features developed at-scale, they have to use huge capital expenditures to push stuff through (God only knows how much it costs them in data dollars to show nfl games)

Facebook fixed this early when they let MSFT grab a piece of the pie in exchange for access to all those beefy data centers around the world.

I think the GUI can be tweaked to be more user-friendly and track conversations and back and forths better.

Folks be like check out these two people arguing on twitter and I click over and can't follow what's going on.

IG and FB are easy enough to follow conversations. Heck even OKP it's easy enough to have a dialogue. But twitter makes it way harder than it has to be.

Right now twitter will exist because there is only ONE twitter. While the story is more about how they've dropped the ball so many times, imho the bigger interesting part is how they have NO competitors, lol.

A lot of what appears to be non sequiturs. Emojis that don't always load (I get the rectangle) or I have no idea what they mean. Memes, and I can't turn images off. Inside jokes.

If someone uses it all the time then they might know their way around, but as a casual user the signal-to-noise ratio is VERY bad.

The Myspace update that killed all usability came around 2010. NO ONE was able to use it successfully. All types of complaints about how incredibly slow it was and instead of rolling it back they stuck with it. Back then I was on a dual quad core Xeon processor machine and it STILL took well over a minute just to log in and get to my homepage. The shit would lock up the browser HARD for a minute or two straight just trying to render. It became useless and all those people just said "fuck this" and defected to Facebook if they didn't already have an FB account.

but smartphones, broadband and assorted hardware becoming cheaper and faster = no more growth for a blog-only platform anyway.

how can they not convince someone of the value of it?
ALL the news is now is literally shit that was trending on twitter at the beginning of the day
twitter is first on everything
by the time it gets to facebook, shit is like days old
and everybody in their late 30s writing a long ass post about some shit that's been over
i'm sure there's more to no being able to sell it than that but the value of having a social media site that is such a primary source of news/entertainment/comedy has to be obvious to anyone who understands the way the trends flow

It's just a vehicle and it can be replaced when a new twitter comes out and does the same thing slightly better.

The valuation has to be the amount of subscribers it has...

I remember when twitter first started and I laughed because I knew it wouldn't work. Jokes on me but I wonder how much of the twitter push was actually due to twitter or just aggressive marketing.

They need to cash out soon IMO.

TMZ ain't breaking no rumors over snapchat.
You aren't going to be able to argue with Kanye over Facebook.

Instagram is probably the closet you can get for simplicity/ease/immediacy. Like ive seen stories that start in twitter move onto instagram. But since its primarily a visual medium it still doesn't have the same immediacy of information as twitter.

The thing that twitter does best, sending instant mini-messages across the entire swath of the internet where anyone can reply...nobody comes close.

render other platforms redundant.

Facebook is way more of breaking news and video feed then it was 5 years ago.

Twitter might get desperate with plateauing at 300M users and try to make itself more like the easier to use IG and alienate core users without really challenging IG.

Folks might get tired of posting to 5 different platforms and one of those platforms might get left out in the cold.

It's quick, clear, and concise

That type of communication isn't nearly as rewarded/useful on any other platform.

a post under 140 characters and no images/video on Facebook is a waste of effort since it rewards fuller content. Instagram is twitter for images. Snap is twitter for video/animation.

None of them fill the type of soapbox Twitter is.

These platforms aren't different tools to do the same thing, each one has a specific use. The way you communicate on each one is very different, and the way people consume that content is very different.
