and i'd love to be wrong about that, but the way the Trump campaign is going they are fucking teflon for some dumb ass reason.

i JUST saw a CNN piece where some CNN lady was talking to a black woman guest (didn't catch her name) and mentioning to her that there are people saying "if Michelle had done this in 2008 would it have been judged as harshly (of course - way more harshly)."

they are already trying to make excuses for this.

She's not the candidate, not a politician, she was wronged by the speechwriter and all that.

It would have been a MUCH bigger deal if this happened in Trump's speech.

Still, it feeds into the existing narrative that Trump is a fraud and he can't even manage a campaign, let alone a presidency.

And even as pessimistic as I usually am about these things, I think the vast majority of people will realize that if this had happened to Michelle then she, herself, would have been raked over the coals for it. She would NEVER escape the shadow of it.

The concept is ancient (it appears in the Bible, and is probably common in many cultures) but the exact phrase "word is bond" or "my word is my bond" was a 5%er thing that infiltrated Hip-Hop. I grew up up just thinking of it as a basic expression I heard from alot of people, especially New Yorkers. In fact, for years I thought LL Cool J was saying "word is born", like, his word is so fecant and alive that is takes flight.

I don't know what the motive is. But there's not even a proper motivation to plagerize this speech in the first place. It would be incredibly easy to simply write another generic 'wife speech'. And the words that were plagerized were pretty generic. So why?

I can only guess that this is bait. It HAS to be. Just like all of the other 'mistakes' of the Trump campaign which are not actually mistakes. So play it out like a chess-player anticipating eventual moves in response to this. Those who would be outraged....they point out the obvious plagerism. Then what?

Melania had some chick named McIvar help her edit it... She's close to the Trumps worked on some of Trump's books. But she likely added Michelle Obama's text, adjusted it somewhat... after that it probably was only cleared by Ivanca's husband, and Manafort..who would have no reason to know those words were Obama's.... and off they went.

This isn't a professional campaign they are running...not at all.

There was no ulterior motive to this ....just laziness...unprofessional..no checks and balances....

the motivation of McIvar or whomever actually got the Obama text...and who knew about it ... whose to say... We're dealing with a campaign...a party...a voting base..that has expressed disrespect and insults towards all things Obama...why would we expect someone to think it was wrong to use her words uncredited?

the real explanation here is that melania trump doesn't have a college degree and has no idea how plagiarism checking (or the internet) works.

the only person she trusted to write most of the speech has little experience in speechwriting....guess what happens.

Not sure how it addresses my point. Which is that what are perceived to be political mistakes by Trump have proven to NOT hurt him politically. Time and time again. How many examples do we need?

The one that turned me was in the fall of the last year. He said of John Mccain....'I care about the vets who didn't get captured'. I thought that was it. That's the type of statement that destroys an entire campaign. But, to my horror, his polls went UP the day after saying that. That's when I realized this was serious. And I predicted....to the ridicule of almost every single person on this board....that he would win the nomination. Because I had seen this before with Rob Ford.

Lo and behold and all that. For close to a year....the political pundits and experts have been pointing out what they perceive to be mistakes by Trump. Except NONE of them have actually hurt him. In fact, his so-called 'mistakes' have seen him gain momentum in the polls. If you think this is an accident and/or coincidence...I don't know what to tell you.

Whether you want to call it genuis or not....it is very clear that Trump is baiting his political opponents with what would normally be seen as 'political mistakes' but ultimately rising in poll numbers in the aftermath. That is a fact.

I have watched american politics since i was 11 years old. I have NEVER seen a convention night as limp and inadequate as last night and the night before. I can't account for it. He's supposed to be the media specialist. Television conventions should be his lane. I'm convinced that his strategy is above my head. Maybe he realizes that live television doesn't matter anymore. I don't know.

What I DO know....is that there is no benefit to his campaign in plagerizing those words from Michelle's speech. And nobody would even think they could get away with it even if there WAS a benefit in doing so. It's possible that there's mechanisms of speech writing that I'm not aware that can offer an explanation for it. What we've seen the past couple of days is the Trump campaign play the victim. Maybe the bait was set with the end goal of making the other side look petty and aggressive. And maybe this is exacerbated by the fact that she is a woman and speaks english as a second language. Maybe Trump thinks that he needs Hillary's campaign to attack a woman for the optical advantages it may provide. I can't call it.

And white privilege does not explain Trump's success. There are more than a hundred million white people in America. There is only one white person who was won the GOP nomination.

Cleveland (CNN)Donald Trump's campaign finally moved Wednesday to shut down the distracting controversy over Melania Trump's plagiarized speech by identifying the writer who worked on the speech.

After spending more than 36 hours directly dismissing charges of plagiarism, the campaign pivoted to acknowledge that passages had been taken from Michelle Obama's 2008 speech to the Democratic National Convention, in what was framed as an innocent mistake.

Meredith McIver, a family friend and writer for the Trump organization, identified herself in a statement as the person responsible for lifting phrases for Melania's Trump convention speech. She apologized and said she had offered her resignation -- but added that Donald and Melania Trump did not accept it.
McIver explained that during a phone conversation, Melania Trump read passages from Michelle Obama's speech as examples of the kind of tone she wanted to strike because she admired the first lady.
"I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama's speeches. This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant."
McIver said Donald Trump told her that "people make innocent mistakes and that we learn and grow from these experiences."
Defensive crouch
Until McIver released her statement, the Trump campaign had once again found itself off message and in a defensive crouch. The long delay by the campaign to offer an explanation of what happened essentially wasted 36 hours of Trump's convention -- a rare moment in a bruising campaign to present Trump in the best light. The messages of speeches on Monday and Tuesday were overshadowed by questions surrounding the incident.
As the campaign publicly dismissed the controversy and blamed both Hillary Clinton and the media, sources said that behind the scenes, Donald Trump was furious.

Donald Trump was furious. Melania Trump was humiliated. And the campaign, which had appeared to be on the path to becoming a more organized, disciplined operation, was back on its heels, dealing with swirling accusations and internal finger-pointing that yielded no real answers about what happened.

But whatever not the goofy part.) This person on Twitter found a page on corecontour.com of an exercise instructor named Regina Bellora. The Twitter account only had 7 tweets and they were from yesterday and today. In this same Twitter thread, some folks are saying that some of "McIver" or whoever's random tweets - https://twitter.com/MrDeeky/status/755854108301471744 -, yes, out of the 7, are taken from 50 Shades of Gray and Twilight.

I simply thought this plagiarism shit was funny and trotted to KIM, but this shit keeps pulling me back in.

Short version: Maybe. Melanie McIver describes herself as a writer for the Trump Organization. The apology letter was issued on Trump Organization letterhead. As in, Trump's corporate organization, not his campaign. Using corporate resources to write a political speech is not kosher.
