did you recommend any songs/albums? i think it's important for us to introduce the good stuff to these younger musicians. my brother is ten years older, and he put me onto a lot of stuff i would've never heard on my own. he was never condescending about it, which is probably why i actually listened. not only did i get into a ton of great music, it's also a bond we share now that pretty much will never go away.

never even hearing of the dude??? c'mon.

The fact that he's a musician himself makes it worse.

This was one of my fav posts from last year describing how him being non-existent on the internet hurt him, even 15 chimed in to agree.

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2951107&mesg_id=2951107&listing_type=search

Because you figure a 20 year old, who probably got into music sometime in the last 10 years, was faced with a superstar who went to extremes to take down all his music from the web. Like when he was making people take down his Coachella cover of Radiohead's "Creep" until they complained, LOL.

http://www.stereogum.com/10102/prince_is_being_a_creep_radiohead_tell_him_hes_a_l/news/

This is going to change presumably with the estate taking charge. It's going to be interesting to see how he gets recognized.

Diamonds and Pearls was 4 years before he was born
the internet mp3 era popped off when he was 6, and Prince doesnt participate in that nor streaming. not even Youtube

there's almost no way he *should* know about Prince unless he was actively curious enough to hunt down the classics

Very possible
His parents are devout Christians and musicians
They grew up on Garth, Tim MCGraw and Shania Twain

They never really knew Prince like that nor were they going to intro their son to him.

That description fits 80% of my nieghbors

while I was in college between 1997 and 2002, and then during my young adult years, up through about 2005, or so. In no small part due to this website and the Lesson.

I remembered that he was a big star when I was a little boy, but by the time I started to get deep into music for myself (around 1995) his best days were in the past. And that was before the internet became as useful as it is today.

So I get why kids don't know much about him.

Hopefully his videos being shown all night last night on MTV/BET/and VH-1 Soul will kick budding music heads into overdrive to go find his stuff (difficult thought that may be).

Can't imagine a black parent with a kid born in 1979 not exposing said kid to Prince.
That's like saying you didn't know MJ (Jordan or Jackson)

Purple Rain and Little Red corvette were just too huge of songs to not know them in American grade school pre-1990

hits. Only knowing those doesn't really count, imo.

When I was digging into him in the late 90's and early 2000's it was the other stuff I was finding out about, Parade (other than Kiss), album cuts from 1999, the more obscure stuff he did for other people.

I'm talking about that stuff.

Like I said, I remembered him at the height of his dominance, when I was like 3, 4, 5 years old. And certain songs I vividly remembered as being big hits among "us" like Most Beautiful Girl In The World, when I was in middle school.

But I was wasn't a music head when I was 4 years old.

By the time I got to be a head, I had to go back and dig for that deeper level stuff.

So I don't "know" Prince then.
I only know the big radio hits and I can name about 2 dozen off the top of my head and sing word for word with each one if it came on right now.

If you 35+ you should know who Prince is.
If you under 21 I will give the pass that you don't know who he is.
Never even heard of him.
Lotta white folk didn't mess with dude like that and sheltered their kids from him.

Or a phenomenal producer.

Or that Shiela E was his drummer.

I wonder how many hip hop heads don't know Prince could give their favorite beatmaker work on an LM1.

People at the office yesterday were confused as to why he was such a big deal.

Talking about he was just some 80's singer and how the publicity level made sense when MJ died...but not Prince.

It was fucking weird.

The number of people who do not know or do not care to know that Prince is one of the greatest guitarists music has ever had is large and vast.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.

I think anyone who is our age and likes music knows Prince is a beast on guitar

not knowing his experience on drum machine and guest artist I can buy but who the he'll is our age and doesn't know Prince can shred?

We were raised during a time when it was Prince, MJ and Madonna and we all watched him play guitar. That was his claim to game IMO.

I have had way too many arguments with actively working rock musicians over the years that Prince was a better guitarist than whoever the technical hero du jour was at the time, to believe otherwise.

The rock establishment by and large leaves him wrongly out of the conversation, so until you pull out a shitload of receipts and point out that even the white canon guitar gods (eric Clapton etc) respected Prince's skills, your average rock listener has no fucking clue.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.

don't guitar players study and talk about
the great guitar players? Prince is one
of those, ya know.

I'm not saying it's impossible that his crew
or elders didn't mention Prince in that convo
(especially if he's white), but there's more
to the post than a 20 yr old not knowing who
Prince is... it's more shocking that a guitar
player has never HEARD of Prince.
Possible, but still a bit sad.

Nevertheless tho, I agree with those who say
give the kid a starting point.

Do any of yall live around racists?
I guess I've gotten used to their ways and can see how they have ZERO interaction or desire to with Black folk.

They could go on and on and on about Nikki Sixx but never not once mention Prince (I've seen it done PLENTY of times)

Best acknowledgement of Prince you'll get out of them is the Super Bowl

>I never heard him mentioned with the GOATS.

After his memorable Rock & Roll Hall of Fame performance people started to give it up for P in terms of being an elite guitarist...That's when the guitar heads started going back and listening to his live guitar work and some of his recordings on some OH SHIT...WE DIDN'T KNOW...

When Clapton calls u one of the best living guitarist (Eric LOVED Prince's playing) then it's pretty much game, set, match...

Fuck it...I'll let Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) handle this...

http://ultimateclassicrock.com/billy-gibbons-prince-guitar/

Billy Gibbons Discusses Prince’s ‘Sensational’ Guitar Playing
By Dave Lifton

Prince‘s guitar brilliance, as evidenced on hits like “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy” and “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” won him the admiration of many of his fellow axemen, including Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. In a new interview, Gibbons talked about his friendship with Prince and recalled a lenghty conversation where they talked shop.

“‘Sensational’ is about as close a description of Prince’s guitar playing as words might allow,” he told the Washington Post, “I believe that the feeling one was left with, if afforded the luxury of actually seeing Prince perform … we’d be looking for other superlatives. Because it’s almost got to the point of defying description.”

Gibbons and Prince, who died on Thursday at the age of 57, ran into each other at New York’s Tiger Bar in 2009 after the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concerts. For two hours, they sat at a corner table and “we really dove into the depth of his intent, interest and focus toward technique and tone. I left that evening even more mesmerized than I’d previously been, just knowing the sincerity that Prince kept toward his playing, his performing and his all-around showmanship.”

Despite “a legion of Brazilian carnival dancers” that began dancing on the bar, Prince’s focus was entirely on what Gibbons was saying. But as prodigious as Prince was on his instrument, he seemed at a loss when trying to explain where his talent came from.
“He said, ‘I’ve really enjoyed some of the work that showed up on that monster hit of yours, Eliminator, the sound of ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’’” He went on to cite a number of titles. I said, ‘Okay, I could give you some amplifier settings, I could give you some guitar strings.’ I said, ‘Why don’t you tell me about ‘When Doves Cry’? He just smiled. ‘That one gets me too.’”

The duo also commiserated on how their respective styles affected their ability to play. “He asked me, ‘Does your beard get in the way like some of my costumes?’ And I was stunned momentarily and I thought about it and said, ‘You know, perhaps so.’ But then he grabbed my arm and said, ‘Don’t get me wrong, I’m okay with it.’”
