"Okp, check out my new music video... for a Mac Dre cover band"
I'm a working bassist out in the Bay Area, and I got a call to play with a band that would cover Mac Dre songs. My first instinct: WTF? Second thought: Does it pay or have potential to be a thing? As a musician I'm constantly making judgments about what projects to invest my time into. And then they dropped the drummer's name and told me anyone in the band ad to be Bay Area born and raised, and I was in. The drummer is Thomas Pridgen, one of the dopest drummers out there who I've been following for a long time (since high school)... He was in the Mars Volta and Suicidal Tendencies and was the youngest person ever (13) to win the guitar center drum-off.
Anyway, we recorded our version of Mac Dre's Genie of the Lamp, and then threw together a lil video. What do y'all think?

The keyboard player was with bayonics from the jump.
When I recorded my track they had me do 5 takes that were laid back I'm the pocket, like I would for most recordings. Then they asked me for 2 takes of me just playing fills and feeling it. They mostly used the last 2. The lushness is really about how we could try to make a pretty repetitive monotonous beat into something live. ... and we're all jazz heads.

of my boys. My boy was in the band as a DJ for a minute
But I always dug what they did with genres, latin music in general and their sound overall. Never got to see them live, unfortunately, but I heard their shows were fun.
regarding the fullness and variation of the sounds, I dig the approach. Seems like a bay area thing, when I saw jazz at Yoshi's it seemed like everybody was all about giving each other a TON of room to breathe and jam out.
I've been hustling out here and have a hard time finding projects that I can just really get down with on many levels. This is one of those. I'll keep yall posted (there'll be live shows as soon as our drummer gets back from touring with a different group in eastern europe)
