We've talked about this a bit when he was on hot97

but his model relies on having an big fanbase already... and constant engagement..

i don't think that is who he is targeting with it

i think he is targeting those folks who once had a deal and are still trying to get back on instead of leveraging what they already have

or the youtube star who goes with a deal instead of thinking about doing his/her own thing

or those already in a deal that could go this route instead like kweli

edit: i liked how in this video he addressed those artist still seeking the elusive deal

Yea I think for some it will work perfect... others not at all

It's also evolving. Ryan had no content on any other medium except his membership program and now that has changed a bit.

!llmind uses it (store side) for his drumkits and it works really well..

Ultimately I look at it as something that will work incredibly well for Ryan and errrr kinda ok for everyone else..

i also wonder what else will grow from this space

like i was put onto this last week: https://www.oz.com/

which has a similar direct to consumer/fans vibe

I do wonder...

What will happen as people see the individual purchase of music less of a necessity... and switch the streaming?

we are already there.

i think the one thing the labels still have is the ability to break artists through radio and pounding artists in our heads from repeat exposure

but what happens when ideas like tidal's "tidal rising" and apple "connect" really starts being able to break artists?

will the streaming service provider become the next label?

They already have...

Labels solidify radio which in turn builds ability to tour and get repeated exposure.. but

Bryson Tiller was helped by apple music... A lot of the overseas records that creep on US hot 100 charts are coming through spotify playlists.... so its a bit of both..

Apple & spotify are actively trying to break artists though.... per my recent convos with them..
