Pittsburgh is part of the "Ohio Valley"
Jun 24th 2015
114
That's because of the Ohio River. The Mississippi runs through MN too

Pittsburgh is also NOT the east coast.
Jun 24th 2015
124
it has much more in common with Cincy, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester..
Jun 24th 2015
127
                               agreed.
Jun 24th 2015
128
How about this: Pittsburgh is in the Northeast
Jun 24th 2015
130
that's even more absurd than calling it Mid-Atlantic.
Jun 24th 2015

why would you look at lesser cities tonprove your point?
Jun 25th 2015
157
It's about size. Pittsburgh is a city of 300k
Jun 25th 2015

DC is technically southWEST of Philly. Very much so, in fact. You can drive from DC to Harrisburg faster than Philly to Harrisburg. So the 4 hours between DC and Pittsburgh makes sense.

EDIT - I just remembered that when I did that drive with my father, he was doing 55 the whole way, which is why it took us that long.

You're still in the eastern OH/western PA area, so it's midwest. But you're definitely in the Appalachian subregion. I don't think a lot of folks realize that Appalachia includes a large chunk of SE & eastern Ohio, western PA and most (if not all) of WV, including the part smashed between OH & PA.

since they're both wihin driiving of the coast and coastal cities and nowhere near the middle part of the country. 20 hours driving from places like witchita/omaha/kc (longer than omaha to vegas).

ohio and pittsburg are both smack dab in the middle of the the eastern time zone.

http://miami-water.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/USA-Time-Zones3.gif

only reason ohio is considered midwest is because it was the western frontier for 200 years before the us bought the real midwest from the french.

i couldn't follow your point in part b/c no one w/any sense would argue that LV = Midwest.

LV and Pittsburgh are both border cities as related to the point at issue in that they straddle a couple different regions. in LV's case those regions are SW and Rockies, but NOT MW. which is why you lost me w/that point.

i put LV in the SW, btw.

Look, it's an eastern city, period. It was part of the original 13 colonies. The midwest is is the first part of America's western expansion. Pittsburgh happens to border the fringe of the Midwest. The city is far more similar to Hartford or Baltimore than it is to Iowa City or Madison. It sits in the mountains. The midwest is flat as fuck.

Just like Buffalo and Rochester. I think the word "Coast" Is the sticking point for some people.

FWIW, the government doesn't consider it the Midwest: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/99/Census_Regions_and_Divisions.PNG

And as far as it being different from other parts of the state, you could say the same for California

Because Pittsburgh isn't like NY, DC, Boston or Philly, it must be midwestern. In reality, if you look at lesser East Coast cities like Hartford, Springfield, MA or any of the Upstate NY cities, you'd see that Pittsburgh is far more similar to them than it is to Indianapolis, Des Moines or Kansas City.

Metro SA between 2009 and 2010 were the New York City (1,050 in-migrants) ,
Philadelphia (956 in-migrants) and Washington DC (903 in-migrants) Metro SAs.

The largest gross flows of migration affecting the Pittsburgh Metro SA result from
exchanges of population with the Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York City Metro
SAs. Smaller but significant migration flows are generated between Pittsburgh and nearby
Micro SAs, including New Castle (Lawrence County), PA, Youngstown, OH, and Indiana,
PA.

Table 2 shows the CBSAs with the largest in-migration and out-migration flows impacting
the Pittsburgh Metro SA. The Philadelphia and New York Metro SAs and the Indiana, PA
Micro SA, respectively, were the originations of the largest flows of migration into the
Pittsburgh region between 2009 and 2010. The Washington, Philadelphia and New York
Metro SAs attracted the largest outflows of migrants leaving Pittsburgh between 2009 and
2010. Figures 4 and 5 show the pattern of these migration flows for all CBSAs across the
continental United States.

While I disagree, it's something. But the "culturally midwestern" shit is bs. Population flows into and out of East Coast cities, not Midwestern cities.

Boston and Baltimore are twice as big. Philly as 4 times as big and NYC might as well be an order of magnitude larger. It has to be compared to second tier northeastern cities.

I'd venture that Pittsbrgh has the same white ethnic breakdown as Bmore. Both cities' Black folk came from VA, The Carolinas, GA during The Great Migration, as opposed to the Midwest, which drew most of it's black population from the central south.

And then there's the archetecture:

while the Midwest technichally starts at Ohio, Pittsburgh is right up against it.

Growing up we got Ohio and WV TV stations. I'm sorry but that ain't Easy Coast at all.

As a youth I wanted to be Easy Coast but it was so obvious we weren't when I went to Philly, Jersey and Brooklyn. Shit was night and day.

Check a map. It's an east coast city that goes back to the 1700s like the rest of the east coast and back when the french owned the Midwest. It's an industrial rust belt east coast city that has nothing to with the mid west. Ohios inclusion is generous and it's only included bc it was west back in the 16-17-early 1800s.

Even if the cultural argument is sound (and it's not), it's like saying Denver is Pacific Northwest cause they're all granola crunchy outdoorsy and liberal.

In Philly apparently I'm not from the east coast even though i'm from a state that is actually on the coast unlike PA. For some reason east coast means north east even though new england and the south are all on the same coastline.

None of this makes any sense to me

I meant Atlantic coast as in a region. Kinda like the midwest isn't technically the middle of the west but it's the name of a certain region.

Would Charlotte or the Raleigh/Durham area fall strictly under the south or could they be Atlantic coast cities too?

I'd say Buffalo is more Midwest than Mid-Atlantic/East Coast. Being from Erie, PA (90 miles west of Buffalo), I always tried to deny any Midwest affiliation but in my old age, I've admitted defeat and am more accepting of Erie's "Midwesterness".

Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh...they're all pretty much the same mentality wise. Are we making the Rust Belt a region?

White people are more heavily Catholic in the Eastern Rustbelt cities vs protestant in the midwest. During the Great Migration, The Eastern rustbelt drew more black people from VA and the Carolinas than AL, MS, TN and LA. There are more row-house neighborhoods, etc.

largely from the west - various cities in Ohio, Detroit and, of course, Chicago. they tend to connect to Philly and NYC.

if Pittsburgh were an Eastern city there'd be better, more direct rail connections w/the rest of the East.

we can check the roads too - better connections w/various cities in Ohio and Pennsylvania than w/Eastern cities.

of course, almost all of this can be blamed on the mountains to the east.

fuck you.

the point remains - Pittsburgh's rail and road connections to the Midwest cities to the west help explain why the city is so Midwestern even though it's located in a state typically considered East Coast.

midwest/west.

I remember when the D.O.C. dropped his debut album and it was called a West Coast album. It wasn't until Scarface The Diary dropped that I ever heard Texas as being South.

Hell I remember in 1986, Atlanta was called East Coast music. It wasn't until 2 Live Crew dropped Banned in The Usa that I ever even heard of Southern Rap.

so it made sense. Same way people saw Lady of Rage and Boss as being "West Coast rappers" although they came from Farmville, VA, and Detroit. Hell, Xzibit too.

I figure that DOC came out before anyone was even counting "South Rap," so they just grouped him into the West.
