Women now as big as men were in the 1960s

June 16, 2015 | Filed in: ajc-digpres.
COMMENTS 10

If you’ve been exposed to a Nicki Minaj video, you may have theorized clothing is getting smaller, women are getting larger and singers don’t really sing anymore.

FILE - In this Aug. 24, 2014 file photo, Nicki Minaj performs at the MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. (Photo by Matt Sayles/Invision/AP, File)
Nicki Minaj, in 2012, looks better than Mama Cass from the 1960s, but doesn’t sing nearly as well. (Photo by Matt Sayles/Invision/AP, File)

At least one of those theories is correct, according to new data from Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control, which says women are now as big as men were in the 1960s.

Men have grown too, and now weigh as much as 1.5 women from the 1960s (think Emma Peel of the 1960s Avengers TV series).

The CDC says Americans have grown up about an inch, which accounts for some of the weight gain, but we’ve really grown out.

The average American woman now tips the scales at 166, about what a man weighed in the 1960s, for a 18.5 percent increase.

Men have gained an average of 30 pounds to tip the scales at 195 pounds (a 17.6 percent increase).

The average waist size of women is now 37.5 inches; men 39.7 inches.

Despite what you may see on television, almost everyone is overweight. The CDC says 69 percent of adult Americans are either overweight or obese. More than a third, 35 percent, are considered obese.

It probably doesn’t help that Coca-Cola paid nutrition experts to suggest soda is a healthy snack.

I don’t know what you are having for lunch, but I may skip the loaded Dogzilla and tots at Manuel’s.

82% of black women in the US are overweight with 56.6% being obese

Its out of control, fools thinking they can be overweight and healthy.. Too many are under the delusion that exercise can stave off the weight gain when in reality what you eat is 80% of your weight control. Takes an hour of exercise to burn off 300 calories, most folks aren't coming close to that. Shit diets are killing us!

and this whole "body shaming" bullshit we're now being forced to deal with is only going to make it worse.

Telling someone that they might wanna lose a few pounds turns into you an evil vile unfeeling asshole victimizing that poor gelatinous hock goblin because they're a little... "fluffy".

The whole fat shaming beat down anyone received for saying someone is overweight or obese shut most people up.

Peoples perception is very skewed bc they are constantly seeing overweight people. I'm 5'7 140lbs 34,25,37 holding near 20% body fat and people call me skinny. I am in no way, shape, form or fashion skinny. Those #'s will never equal skinny.

America's food choices and intake are fucked up. You do not need to exercise to lose weight. You need a caloric deficit.

I eat EVERYTHING in moderation. Except shellfish bc I don't like shell fish.

That's another excuse. Well if yall all eating the same things...why would you look any different from your family.

Being big doesn't run in your family, a poor diet runs in your family.

It is very difficult to change bad habits. I recognize this. A person has to be ready to take the steps to make lasting change and get control of their weight. IT aint easy at all.

I never say these things to people. I just listen. If someone is truly interested in making change I will help them but I don't hold hands. You either tap into an inner discipline or your don't.

if so, why?

women's activity levels have likely increased in comparison to men's which probably leveled out (or even decreased) within the last 20-30 years

pregnancy leads to a closing of the weight gap between men and women?

i guess that makes sense...

but women have always been able to do so...i'm not so sure that explains it but i guess it could be related

Pregnancy is more related to weight gain moreso than closing the gap.

In response to Reply # 22

and muscle mass helps you burn calories.

plus we NEED more fat than men do for reproductive purposes so its more a part of our makeup.

and then there's pregnancy.

69.1% are either obese, overweight combined. Cut the sugar in your diet, quickest way to drop the weight. Avoid processed foods, eat more vegetables, lean meats. The sugar is the main culprit.

All those low fat products have increased sugar and salt levels to compensate for the fat reduction.

Avoid drinking calories ie; soda pop, juice, Starbucks style dessert coffees some of which contain in excess of 40grams of sugar which is the equivalent to eating two Twinkies, 3 tablespoons.

'cause artificial sweeteners destroy your body in other ways.

Sugar ain't really the problem. Over consumption of sugar is the problem. It's ok to have a drink once in a while, but what we've become used to here in the US is constantly drinking pop and shit. What used to be a treat on the weekends (pop) is now a staple with every meal. On top of that shit like HFCS has replaced regular sugar pretty much across the board and is found in places you simply wouldn't think of (like bread).

she likes to go out and think she's eating healthy with her meal, but then proceeds to have 3 cups of soda or juice with her meal which in the end adds about 600 calories to her already 800 calorie meal. But yeah, it's just the over consumption of sugary drinks I was talking about as well. It's ok to have something besides water here and there but the primary drink most folk should get use to is just plain ol water. No additions.

When I'm cutting, I'm doing about 1800 a day. When I'm not, I stay about 2200-2400 per day. I'll enter dinner time having consumed less than 1000 calories to that point. But HER on the other hand... lol. I guess that's the point of the original post and that whole CDC article.

Because sugar is in everything like you mentioned bread. Its out of control. Without question moderate consumption isnt a problem though for many sugar is addictive, it can be a slippery as hell slope.

In response to Reply # 49

Like I said, HFCS is everywhere it didn't used to be. I think we over consume it because we're being conditioned to ever increasing portions of food and drink. Where a small pop from your average fast food chain used to be 8oz in the late 70's/early 80's, it's now 16oz or larger. The idea of a double quarter pounder was absurd back inna day, but now we have not only doubles, but triples and Hardee's/Carl's Jr have 1/3lb and double 1/3rd pound joints.

Our overeating is being conditioned by the companies that are forced to increase profits year after year. You can't satisfy shareholders by selling the same amount of your product year after year; eventually you're gonna have to sell way more.

You might be right about that.. Plus sugar causes endorphins to be released, more sugar you eat the more you need to get that endorphin rush.

Even at the grocery store. Stop buying food in a box. Go to the produce section. That should account for 50% of what you eat. i see families fill a shopping cart up without ONE item from the produce section. Reheating frozen chicken wings isn't much better than Mcdonalds.
