Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapses after ship struck it, sending vehicles into

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, has collapsed after a large container boat collided with it early Tuesday morning.

Reports came in around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday that a large vessel crashed into a column in the central part of the bridge carrying north and southbound lanes of Interstate 695, catching on fire before causing multiple vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below.

At least seven vehicles, including at least one tractor-trailer-sized vehicle, fell into the water, Baltimore City Fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright told WTOP.

Rescuers were searching for at least seven people in the water.

“This is a dire emergency,” Cartwright, told The Associated Press. “Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people.”

He added that some cargo appeared to be dangling from the bridge, which spans the Patapsco River, a vital artery that along with the Port of Baltimore is a hub for shipping on the East Coast. Opened in 1977, the bridge is named for the writer of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Petty officer Matthew West from the Coast Guard in Baltimore told WTOP that a container ship flying under a Singapore flag crashed into the bridge. The vessel, called “Dali,” was headed through Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, as its final destination, according to Marine Traffic and Vessel Finder maps and data.

The Maryland Transportation Authority posted on X around 2 a.m. that all lanes were closed in both directions for an “incident” on the bridge, and later posted that traffic was being detoured to Interstate 95 and Interstate 895, the department said.

Baltimore Mayor Brendon Scott posted that he was aware of the situation and would be en route to the bridge with other city and state leaders.

“Emergency personnel are on scene, and efforts are underway,” he said in a post on X.

The Associated Press contributed to this report. This is a developing story. Stay with WTOP for the latest.

Could this happen to any bridge, or is this a regulatory mishap on the size of ships that are allowed to pass through those waterways? From what's been reported so far, it's a ship operator or mechanical error. Very scary situation. (DC adjacent)

Suspension bridges have their pillars way off to the sides (and are huge) so they are probably less likely.

The ones with the pillars in the middle of the water would probably go down if they were damaged enough. Like this bridge in New Jersey that has always weirded me out every time I cross it on my motorcycle: http://bridgestunnels.com/location/pulaski-skyway/

these cargo ships pass thru all the time

my question is if it was a mechanical failure or a computer failure caused by a cyber attack

got me thinking about the movie on netflix with the cyber attack that had planes and ships wrecking due to computer failures. Especially that cargo ship that kept coming towards the beach.

Ship lost power twice and they didn't have enough time to reset the utilities before hitting the pillar.

The first time I drove over it my trainer and I discussed what it'd be like to go over the edge at that height. I got more comfortable over time but never fully comfortable.

If you haven't been over that bridge (or seen Season 2 of The Wire), the video footage of the accident doesn't give a sense of the height and scale of the bridge.

Absolutely horrifying and the only positive is that this happened at nearly 2am or a terrible tragedy would be so much worse.

I used to have recurring nightmares that that there was road missing on a bridge and my car had to jump to make it. Sometimes i made it and other times i didnt.

To this day if the bridge has an upper or lower option i always take the lower....i always know when i cross the midpoint of the bridge so i know if im closer to the back or front.

This is insane

If you are lower wouldn’t everything fall on top of you?

not that there is really a good option but I want to be closest to the top of the water.

The water was probably freezing and it was dark too. I hope they can save those folks.

There's a big ass bridge that connects St Pete over to just north of Sarasota. It's called the Sunshine Skyway. It's a well known story in the area that it was hit by a boat back in 1980, similar to what happened today.

I'm not trying to scare folks so I'll warn y'all that the image at the top of this story is frightening.

https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida/2024/03/26/florida-sunshine-skyway-bridge-disaster-collapse/

My girl is scared to death of this bridge. She won't drive across it. She was an avid runner. They do an annual 10k across the bridge. She wouldn't go near it.

And now that you mention it I remember a friend of the friend I was visiting had been telling us a similar story about how he and his girl are both terrified of this bridge.

That picture is fucking *crazy*.

Moore: Dali lost power, issued ‘mayday’ that helped save lives

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the Dali lost power and issued an emergency call for help shortly before the freighter crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse.

The “mayday” distress call allowed officials to halt vehicle traffic headed over the bridge, Moore (D) said.

“By being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives,” he said.

It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Search and rescue efforts continue.

Moore said at a news conference that the cargo ship was headed at the bridge at eight knots, which he called “a very, very rapid speed.”

ship lost power, regained power, lost it again, regained it again but it was too late. if you've ever watched a huge ship navigate, it takes a LONG time to move in any particular direction, even longer without tugboat assistance. it doesn't look like any tugs were attached nor would i assume they'd be at that point of leaving the harbor.

i'm not sure they will.

not only is the a horrible accident with probable deaths right now, this is going to be an ongoing issue for the city, and by extension, the country (maritime shipping and cross country movement of goods), for years.

i guess i'm not sure how you can avoid an accident like this though i assume that's a pretty old bridge and you could have made it "collision proof"?

i also saw something interesting about Maryland having a law where there are special pilots who pilot these ships through MD waterways - it's not the actual ship's captain.

-ship made a mayday call, which allowed authorities to stop traffic over the bridge, preventing more casualties

- although there were preventative devices in the water, the angle at which the ship approached played a major role. If it was more of a straight on hit, the ship may have been stopped.

If I remember correctly, they have/had escort services for that bridge due to drivers being afraid to cross.

Real talk, I feel bad for the loss of life AND the crew on that ship. I cannot fathom what it’s like to be part of such of horrible situation.

if so, how were there vehicles on the bridge during the collapse? i guess more will come out about that.

that said, watching the videos that are out there, you could see traffic crossing the bridge and at the time of impact there did appear to be very few, if any, vehicles crossing.

How to escape if your car goes underwater
Exiting the car in the first minute it begins to sink improves your chance of survival

By Andrea Sachs and Gabe Hiatt
March 26, 2024 at 1:48 p.m. EDT

A remaining section of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after it collapsed when a cargo ship hit a support structure. (Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post)

It’s a nightmare scenario for drivers: Your car leaves the road and plunges into water, transforming your vehicle into a sinking trap.
The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge into the Patapsco River early Tuesday may have stoked fears that you could encounter a similar catastrophe in your own car. Officials with the Baltimore fire department said sonar has detected vehicles submerged in the water, but it was unclear whether anyone was inside.
A distress call from the freighter that crashed into the bridge and caused the collapse gave officials time to halt more vehicle traffic over the bridge, said Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D). As of midday Tuesday, two workers had been rescued from a crew that was repairing potholes on the Key Bridge; six workers were still missing.
Story continues below advertisement

In the right conditions, drivers who stay calm have a chance to escape an underwater car. In 2013, a 22-year-old woman from Calvert County, Md., survived after her car went off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and fell 27 feet into the water.
One minute to get out
Thermal physiologist Gordon Giesbrecht, a retired University of Manitoba professor with an expertise in vehicle submersion and hypothermia, said passengers have one minute to rescue themselves from a sinking car. Once the vehicle becomes even partially submerged, the odds of survival are slim.
“A minute is kind of an average number,” Giesbrecht said. “So the windows will certainly work for 60 seconds, but if you know what you’re doing, you can open that window in 10 or 15 seconds.”
Story continues below advertisement

He said travelers should memorize the acronym SWOC:
Seat belts off.
Windows open.
Out immediately.
Children first.

“A lot of people think you should open the doors, which you shouldn’t,” Giesbrecht said. “The car is just going deeper and deeper, and once the water gets up against the window, then you won’t even be able to open the window. So you’ve got to get that window open as soon as you can.”
Giesbrecht said electric windows should still operate within a minute “because your ignition was on.”
When helping children, push the oldest out first so you can help the youngest passengers. Giesbrecht said it is easier to push than pull passengers out, so remain in the car until your dependents have safely evacuated.
Story continues below advertisement

Cars in deep water typically sink nose first, so you can buy a few more seconds by exiting out a back window. If there’s a release button in the front seat for a rear hatch, then you can escape through the back, but don’t waste time trying to locate it.

Once the car begins to sink nose down, the passengers will start to run out of air. Any air bubbles will escape out the back. In shallower water, a car might descend horizontally, so passengers could sustain themselves on a trapped air pocket, but Giesbrecht said this scenario is “very rare.”
Tools don’t work on laminated glass
According to Giesbrecht, smashing a car window is not feasible. Cars that have laminated windows instead of tempered glass are resistant to hard force; not one of the six tools tested in a AAA study were able to break through. A label on the bottom corner of a side window will identify tempered or laminated glass, but that helps only if you have it memorized.

Giesbrecht said that, when you have only a minute to save yourself, it’s not worth the time to search for an instrument.
“Very few people could ever break a window in the first place,” he said. “Once the physics of the water changes, you can’t break the window anyway, even if you had a hammer.”
Once you’re in the water, Giesbrecht said, you need to control your breath, assess your surroundings and climb onto or cling to the vehicle while it is afloat.
“You can hang on to the vehicle as long as you can,” he said, “or until you determine the closest or easiest place you can get to.”
Hypothermia is not an immediate problem, Giesbrecht said, because it takes an hour for someone to become cold enough for the heart to stop. However, drowning is a real concern, especially if you panic or go into shock after plunging into the water.
Story continues below advertisement

“The first thing that will happen when you’re in cold water is a cold shock response, which is gasping and hyperventilating or heavy breathing,” he said. The cold could incapacitate your muscles and nerves, and you could lose your ability to swim.
“We have the 1-10-1 principle,” Giesbrecht added. “You have one minute to get your breathing under control. Ten minutes of meaningful movement. And about an hour before you become unconscious due to hypothermia.”
Make yourself visible
Andy Blair, director of the National Outdoor Leadership School Teton Valley, offered several survival tips for after you have escaped the car and are in the water. He said to keep your shoes on. They can be helpful when swimming in open water and scrambling on rocks or other sharp terrain.

“If they’re really big, heavy boots, they might be more of an impediment,” he said, “but once you get to shore, you’re going to want to have some shoes on.”
Blair said wearing street clothes in cold water that is moving downstream and not having a flotation device is “probably one of your worst-case situations.” However, he recommends securing any loose garments that could snag in the water. He said more form-fitting clothes will reduce your surface area and your exposure to the water.
If swimming to shore is not an option because of the distance or your stamina level, grab a piece of buoyant debris or hoist yourself up on a larger object if you can. Also, hold up an eye-catching item that could attract the attention of a search-and-rescue crew or a bystander.

“For the average person in that situation, their best bet is to find something they can stay afloat with and make themselves as visible as possible,” he said

In response to Reply # 0
Tue Mar-26-24 09:17 PM by shockvalue

Though it might not have saved these individuals, still a valuable skill to have: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drownproofing

In Drownproofing terminology, the great majority of people are "floaters". That is to say that, with the lungs fully inflated (or say at total lung capacity), they have slightly less specific gravity than water and will not start to sink until they exhale. An average floater has 3–4 lb (1.4–1.8 kg) of positive buoyancy in fresh water. "Sinkers" can also benefit from a modified technique, but will find it more difficult to learn and will probably need specialised coaching.

In the Drownproofing survival technique, the subject floats in a relaxed, near-vertical posture, with the top of the head just above the surface. Using the arms or legs to exert a downward pressure, the subject raises himself sufficiently so that the mouth is above the surface and a breath is taken, before dropping back into the relaxed float. This is done several times a minute (typically between 5 and 10), depending upon the needs of the individual. It is important to keep the lungs fully inflated for the maximum possible time and to exhale and inhale rapidly when a breath is taken. The technique is easy to learn and does not require arduous training or a high standard of physical fitness. With practice, it is possible to remain afloat in this way for a long time with minimal effort. Lanoue taught his students to perform the technique with hands and feet tied, thus demonstrating that it is possible to survive even when injured or otherwise disabled.

I appreciate this. I dunno what it is. I've always been strong, a decent athlete, and coachable. I can't swim to save my life. My wife can get in a pool and float like a candy wrapper fell on top of the water. I go down immediately. She's tried, patiently, to just teach me to tread water...unsuccessfully.

always been terrified of water...its my mom's fault.

On our honeymoon, my wife and i had a private shallow pool. I was literally in there with a life vest "training to snorkel". I probably spent 45 minutes getting comfortable floating with the vest, then putting my face under with the snorkel gear and then swimming with it. If anyone saw me in this little ass pool they would have died of laughter.

I was able to do the snorkel excursion though so it was worth it.

i'm sure we have some in our area, probably at our local community center.

our son took them there, and it was only $100 for the whole session which lasted 8 weeks.

oddly enough, i learned via voluntary life or death (it was the 80s, LOL). i was about 9 years old and me and my friends rode our bikes to the beach on a summer day when our parents were at work and went in. they could all swim and i couldn't. i just walked out until i couldn't touch bottom. they said they'd all help me if i needed it but luckily my natural instincts or whatever kicked in and from that day i could swim like 2nd nature.

Although I float on my back...

Much easier to start off in saltwater if you have a chance - you're much more buoyant (although you then need to get comfortable with the occasional wave).

The description is exactly what I do - definitely work on keeping as much air in as possible for as long as possible, and then just focusing on relaxation.

which is saying alot. I can't count know how many 'blame DEI for this' things I saw today which I guess isn't technically a conspiracy theory as much as it's just (even if you try to exclude the blatant racism for a second to find a connection), fucking submoronic.

conspricists in general have gotten so much worse. not dying of covid has done wonders for their brand

(unfortunately i saw a bunch of stupid ass conspiracy tik toks too)

...one guy who used to work on those exact model of ships explained how the shipping companies who run them work around u.s. laws and the u.s. allows it cuz...MONEY! and how a lot of them are maintained at minimum levls, etc. so the fact that there were mechanical issues is not SUPER surprising...and what those issues might have been and what they'd have done to the ship. he said depending on speed and other conditions, it can take those ships up to a mile to stop WITH everything working, so stopping the ship when you're having power issues? no chance.

i also saw a guy break it down in physics terms: that the force of the ship hitting the bridge support (which btw are made to support weight from above not from the sides) was 18 times the force that one of the planes hit the World Trade Center with on 9/11.

All above the above also mean that the person is CLEARLY not qualified no matter what their (non-white) color is.

Nothing maritime about it - same clearly racist shit with new words.

They say this evidence-free, racist bullshit and yet ignore the mountains of evidence that the failures, unsurprisingly and as always, come from the top because of deregulation and greedy capitalists.

‘They Don’t Have The Courage To Say The N-Word’—Baltimore Mayor Condemns ‘DEI’ Attacks
https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityaray/2024/03/28/they-dont-have-the-courage-to-say-the-n-word-baltimore-mayor-condemns-dei-attacks-following-bridge-collapse/?sh=4764cd8d1031

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said Wednesday critics who called him a “DEI Mayor” after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge earlier this week didn’t have the “courage to say the N-word,” pushing back against racist attacks by online right-wing figures who have attempted to blame him for the incident.

While being interviewed by MSNBC host Joy Ann Reid on Wednesday night, Scott responded to the right-wing social media chatter, saying Black men “have been the bogeyman for those who are racist and think that only straight, wealthy White men should have a say in anything.”

Earlier this week, a widely followed right-wing X user—whose posts attacking diversity initiatives have been liked and replied to by Elon Musk in the past—referred to Scott as “Baltimore’s DEI Mayor” in a post that has received over 25 million views.

Anthony Sabatini, a Republican primary candidate from Florida who previously served in the state’s House, also reacted to the incident by tweeting: “DEI did this,” while another far-right influencer attempted to place the blame on the ship’s operator Synergy Marine Group, saying it “promotes DEI” and is “anti-white.”

Commenting on this, Scott said: “We know what they want to say, but they don’t have the courage to say the N-word.”

Pointing out he was the “duly elected incumbent,” the Baltimore mayor added: “The fact that I don’t believe in their untruthful and wrong ideology…scares them.”

When asked about Fox News host Maria Bartiromo’s attempts to link the disaster to immigration, Scott talked about the immigrant workers who lost their lives in the collapse, saying they “came to this country to fulfill the American dream” and they were “filling potholes in the middle of the night so all of us can use that bridge.”

CRUCIAL QUOTE
Scott added: “We’re ignoring all the conspiracy theorists, everyone who’s playing bridge engineer at home…and understanding that what this is about is showing the world once and again that Baltimore can’t be broken.”

KEY BACKGROUND
The tweet calling Scott a “DEI mayor” has been appended with a community note pointing out that he won 70% of the vote in the city’s mayoral election. The post has also come under sharp criticism from several lawmakers and journalists. White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates condemned the post: “You’re attacking the mayor of a city suffering a tragedy for saying, ‘We have to first and foremost pray for all of those who are impacted’ and ‘pray for our first responders and thank them.’...How on Earth could you possibly take issue with this?”

TANGENT
While the federal and local authorities have said they found no evidence of the incident being a deliberate act or a terrorist attack, conspiracy theories about this have continued to propagate online. According to the Associated Press, security footage of an explosion at the Kerch Strait bridge in the Russian-annexed territory of Crimea in 2022 was widely shared on social media and falsely labeled as footage from the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident. On the day of the collapse, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted about it on X and asked: “Is this an intentional attack or an accident?”

so yeah, she likely leaned somewhat right but tried to keep it professional. I also remember seeing some people being skeptical of her putting extra on her assault. Not denying it happened but to the degree she said it did. It's impossible to know, especially given some of the looney shit she says now, but one way or another, its likely what broke her. I don't think she's trolling for clicks as much as shes just mentally screwed up

Only thing I found was there were 23 crew members on board including the captain, and that the captain and or someone else decided to take a different route to avoid issues off the coast of Yemen.

also, as i pointed out, i was hearing from people in the know, online, and the way these operations are set up, they are basically ALLOWED to skirt U.S. regulations because...CAPITALISM!...and part of that is shady overseas registrations and poorly paid crews of international origins.

None of these sources give solid info on the crew except how many were aboard. Was the captain or crew drunk/high? What’s the background on the crew? Did any have a bone to pick with the US or anyone on the ship? Did the ship have any code violations?

If you can find articles answering any of these questions, share.

everything you asked in your original reply is out there and readily available. Some of the things you are asking now, it's simply too early know.

Crew was 22 Indian Nationals, including 2 pilots
A senior pilot with over 10 years experience was driving and was the one who called to have traffic stopped on the bridge
The ship is owned by Grace Ocean Private LTD, but is being chartered by Maersk
It was carrying 4700 containers, with 56 containing hazardous materials (flammables, corrosives and lithium ion batteries)

Of whats to come, but I do know that had this been a car accident with as many deaths the news w/out hesitation would’ve given info of the driver, intoxication, their state of mind and prior mugshot if already in the system.

I know this because after finding my brother’s body in the joliet river they quickly put up his mugshot and prior arrest info which has nothing to do with his murder. So yeah maybe I am looking at this from a different angle, we all should.

I also question how we’ve become lackadaisical to the news using our image as a switcharoo from the main issue. Right now people are more up in arms(verbally) about the mayor of Baltimore being mentioned as a diversity hire, and the news continues to kee kee that storyline.

The focus should NOT JUST be on the 8 construction crew members but also wtf was manning the ship, and for the sake of something…perhaps shock and/or to play on our collective forgetfulness the news has chosen not to reveal any information about the cargo crew.

If I’m overlooking information that’s already been stated, the post the link. And keep in mind I have yet to type anything negative about any of you. Return the sentiment.

Legal responsibility to protect their employees' identities in the event of an accident?

I don't know anything about the specific laws but I can assume after a little bit of googling that the police and press can't obtain and divulge employees' names and toxicology reports during an ongoing investigation, if at all.

We know about the company, we know about the ships contents and history, but to reveal private details about the workers on the Dali I'm sure you can imagine would not be a good precedent.

Sad thing is that because corporations are afforded more rights than citizens, regular people going about their business in the world can't enjoy the same right to privacy. But ONLY because of the liabilities facing the company, not because of some nefarious agenda or because of special characteristics of the employees.

I literally typed for anyone to post a link to information on the crew.

Actually your response reminds me of a mixed Croation guy who I went on a “date” with. He blabbed on and on about his Croation roots and said something about being able to play an instrument. When I ask the name of the instrument he said ‘there’s no need for me to tell you because you dont know what it is anyway.’

So I’ll type again, if you have a link that gives detail about the cargo crew, paste the link.
