"Scarface Kept It 100 Bout The Decline Of Rap-A-Lot And J. Prince "

http://m.noisey.vice.com/blog/rank-your-records-scarface-geto-boys

•"J Prince wanted to Master P the game," Scarface says. "I was like, 'Wow like we fucked up so bad trying to do Master P when we should’ve just continued to do us.' I feel like that was the fall of Rap-A-Lot Records to me. A lot of people may not see it like that, and some people might have gotten paid but from a creative stand point, trying be like Master P and put out albums every six or seven minutes fucked up our brand. I think greed fucked up the brand."

• "He put my name on My Homies 2," Scarface says of J. Prince. "If anything, I feel like he was trying to ruin my career with cut-away material that never ever made the album. Just a totally disrespectful dude when it came to your shit. J didn’t give a fuck about you. He gave a fuck about him. He didn’t give a fuck about your family. He gave a fuck about his. He didn’t give a fuck who you fed. He only fed his people. That’s real shit. I'm not making this shit up."

• "There isn’t a Geto Boys album that I like," he says. "I didn’t learn anything from it, and it was a bad time in life for me too. With the label, with life, whatever… it’s a point in my life where I was the most miserable. Everybody else was happy but I wasn’t. I did all of this shit for everybody else and nothing for me."

It's always refreshing to hear someone like Scarface who seems honest and from the heart instead of being on the typical industry politics bull numerous artists are on.

It really did get to the point where Caine from "Menace to Society" was going to drop an album on Rap-A-Lot. Big Mike got ruined over there. The had Tela, they had Yukmouth, Hussein Fatal, Z-Ro, Do or Die, Bun-B... J-Prince just refused to invest in promoting the projects.

Rapalot did a truckload of promo for their artists they just never broke past their region for a variety of reasons. Houston rappers consistently talked abt both the good and the bad of street life, in the blues tradition...west coast and east coast kept it focused on the street and partying, cats like face, zro, ugk, etc *always* clearly said along with the money and hoes...comes the penitentiary and graveyard. Name a jayz song about being in jail or having suicidal thoughts because you had to kill your friend over dope etc

And it's real and artistic but not the material a young club hungry audience wants to hear

Imagine a Kendrick Lamar for example or a j cole making hand of the dead body or something. They can't. It's too real.

That's always been the downfall of Houston rappers, they are too real

The promo didn't reach the East. Everybody loves street dudes who can really rap. But if you drop records at a No Limit pace, with little national promo, we're just gonna assume those artists are novelty artists.

..i know bin reps houston for life, but face literally called out the negative aspect of j prince (and the area) for not making the right moves to promote and support the art/artist. this isn't the typical 'artist complaining about lack of support from their label' spin. this is recognizing the game for what it truly is: big business. you can't cut corners at every turn and expect everyone to eat from profits/revenue. j prince was looking out for himself.

people will sit in denial, but he's speaking the truth from all sides. he LIVED that life. he talks about his own mistakes AND those of his partners. his words speak volumes.

finally, can't wait. nice read, I'm surprised he had last of a dying breed ranked so low. I would probably put it somewhere close to the middle.

Some of my favorite Face shit is on last of a dying breed. I always laugh when rappers rank their own shit because it's always very different from my rankings.

great album. 'I actually put The Fix towards the middle of the stack. Its a great album but I put it behind Made and Emeritus.

#1 goes to Mr. Scarface is Back....that album is a movie in music form. In my opinion is the 2nd most complete rap album behind Snoop's Doggystyle.

That album was pretty thorough and got largely overlooked, despite the fact that there was a lot of shit casseroles being dropped at the time.

I feel like a lot of the hate from that album came from people who were upset it was on Def Jam and claimed it wasn't true to his sound.

Fact is, the album is flawless from top to bottom.
