"Do you ever approach strangers about their parenting?"
I don't like doing it, but I had to speak to a young mother on the bus about giving her baby water. She didn't catch an attitude with me, but she did let the baby drink half of the bottle before mixing the formula in.

Also, no. If they aren't my friend or if I don't know them personally, I'm not saying anything to them...unless they are straight up abusing their child. this is how fights happen, speaking to people who didn't want your opinion.

both from immigrant families from different parts of the world was that we needed to give our babies water (we didn't want to give based on pediatrician recomendations).
Of course both my wife and I + all our siblings were given water, and were fine.
Never heard the liver and electrolytes thing. Our pediatrician just said it wasnt necessary because babies get all teh water content they need in breastmilk and/or in our daughters case formula. So basically giving them water just filled up their stomachs and left less room for the actual nutritious food.
Come to think of it.
How is it that water by itself is not okay for the liver, but when you just mix in formula it suddenly becomes easier for the liver to handle? There's still water content there. The formula doesnt dilute the water per se.

the same can happen with grown people but it takes more water (obviously). water itself isn't bad for the baby and i don't think it has much to do with the liver and electrolytes but just giving them too much water is a risk for water intoxication.
my doctor told us it was rare but it could happen. i breastfed the boy and he said that was enough so i just didn't give him any until he got to be about a year old. the doctor also told us it was really only newborns you have to worry about.

to be honest maybe by my luck i don't really encounter REALLY bad parenting when i'm out. like i've heard stories from other people and i honestly don't know HOW i'd respond if i witnessed it myself. i mean i've seen kids do the typical stuff like have tantrums or maybe being a lil too rough on the playground but nothing crazy that would warrant my feedback. i just remove myself and my child from the situation if a kid is being weird on the playground or in a common area out in public.

Now that I think of it, I only say something if the parent is being abusive or endangering the child. In every other situation, I mind my own business. I did say something to a parent on the playground the other day. Some boys were playing a little rough and a white dad said something out of pocket to the little black boy...almost threatening, and I had to check him.
