The idea is: there's lots of black people in NYC ---->>> every non-black person must know some black people in NYC.

Sometimes when I'm walking around lower Manhattan, I realize I'm the only black person on the sidewalk. Certain trains running through Manhattan, I'll look around and not see any Black people.

Went to the generic tourst-trappy places (Gino's deep dish!, Goose Island Brewery! Hipster shit in Logan Square!) and was struck how little black faces I saw. Negros should enjoy played out generic nights out in their city too.

If you have traditional Black, Irish, Russian, Polish, Italian, Chinese neighborhoods, your city is going to be pretty segregated.

I do think that a few of these "highly segregated" cities have a very high level of social integration. Multiracial social circles seem more common in these more diverse, yet more segregated cities.

"Furthermore, most of the exceptions are cities like Sacramento that have large Hispanic or Asian populations. Cities with substantial black populations tend to be highly segregated."

^ the last sentence right there.

plus look @ that list of the most-integrated cities. none of them are particularly chocolate.

>I do think that a few of these "highly segregated" cities have
>a very high level of social integration.

what do you mean 'social integration'?

see also: Big Reg's reply.

here in Chicago i don't experience much social integration. meaning the various races ain't partying together here for the most part. we don't eat together. we don't shop together. we don't see movies together.

we don't even ride the same public transportation. when i first moved here i was tripped the fuck out seeing the racial divide on the L platforms in the Loop. i was @ Jackson on the Red Line waiting for a southbound train for my trip to Hyde Park and noticed that almost all of the ppl waiting for that train were black and Asian (Chinese). and almost all of the ppl waiting to go north were white. it was shocking. b/c upstairs at the street level i saw us all sharing the same sidewalks and going into the same buildings. then on the train i noticed that all of the Asian folks got off at Cermak/Chinatown. after that the train was full of nothing but us blacks. i'm used to it now - to the point where when i see a race outlier on the train i can predict at which stop they'll exit.

Multiracial social
>circles seem more common in these more diverse, yet more
>segregated cities.

maybe, but i doubt it. at least here in Chicago.

fuck you.

Those neighborhoods are just filled with GIs who have no attachment to the communities they inhabit. Te apt complex I lived in when I was in the army is probably the most diverse 3 sq blocks I've ever called home.

Like John Forte was saying above. Like the It 'white' restaurant is playing hip-hop w/ a couple of dudes from the bronx trying to show out and take their boos on a date.

Traditionally outside of stereotypical shit like hockey games it was hard to find truly strictly white places even in white neighborhoods.*

This is obviously changing with gentrification; there's some bars ive gone into in bed stuy and everyone inside is white, lol.

that's not much for 'social integration'. Hip-Hop stopped being a Black thing more than a dozen years ago. and one or two negros in a joint does not make for 'social integration'.

1 or 5 negros among 100 ain't 'social integration'.

yes, I understand 'MURRICA is super segregated

but the Midwestern version of it has its own nuances vs. the Northeast and the South

I see it in how the adults emerge from growing up in those environments more than anything else.

edit: SoWhat and BigReg just basically explained it out in their sub-thread

as an individual and terms of your racial group.

second Q, since many of the posters in here seem to be upwardly mobile people of color, do you live in a neighborhood with your own racial group or are you the brown face in the white area?

third Q, when you are looking for a place to live apartment or house, what do you value most in the area you are looking to stay?

I ask because these are def structural and systemic inequalities that shape and map these communities, but on a personal level you value or desire intergration

I have a multi-racial family so, yes.

There aren't a lot of black people in my neighborhood, BUT it borders a predominantly Black neighborhood so I see black people all the time. My daughter is in a black dance school. I walk 4 blocks to my black barbershop. Our neighborhood is actually 30% Asian. We walk my daughter to the Korean church where she takes Korean class on Saturdays. She plays with kids of all races at the playground

Walkability, amenities. There is nothing I need that I can't get on foot.

If you were to enter my exact address, the walkscore would go up to 93.

I do value integration, but I need to ability to retreat into blackness.

>as an individual and terms of your racial group.

yeah.

i don't want to live in an all-Black neighborhood. my favorite nabes have actual racial diversity - blacks, non-white Latinos, whites, Asians, et al.

>second Q, since many of the posters in here seem to be

it's actually diverse - one of the few in Chicago. so there are plenty blacks, non-white Latinos, whites and even Asians in my neighborhood.

relatively safe, conveniently located (for work and play).

fuck you.
