I know he's used to getting in the dirt, but wtf? I don't think there was enough of a build of Frank "abandoning" him to justify this move (I mean from his character's perspective, I know nothing would justify that move from a normal person's perspective). I mean shit, he tried to get him a $220,000 job and he's THAT mad just cause it's not in the white house. The only time he said "I'm ready to come back to work" was when he clearly wasn't ready.

i guess i just thought THAT specifically was below him because it undoes his previous work. his reputation is that of a guy who can get his hands dirty for you, but i doubt he wants to gain the reputation of someone who will take out a previous employer using inside info alone. plus, he was supposed to get rid of it. that means he didn't do his job before when he's known for covering all his bases. what if he was still working for underwood and an opponent had raided his home (or wherever he kept it)?

When he went begging Frank for a job I thought the better play was for him to PROVE his worth instead of begging. He went to work for Dunbar bc he wanted to put himself in position to get invaluable intel that he could use as leverage to get his old job back. Or that he could to blackmail Frank if it came to that. The journal was part of it - offer it to her and then you see what happened. It totally worked.

fuck you.

I get that, but he still has to admit to Frank that he kept the journal. He doesn't know how Frank will react, and after Russo and the journalist my best guess is not great. Even after burning the evidence in front of him he's gotta sell Frank (and by proxy, Claire) on trusting him again. Shit, that's a tough enough sell after he's fallen off the wagon. The better play would be tell Dunbar some fake info (maybe with forged evidence if she's skeptical) that the Underwoods could easily disprove on the off-chance she tries to use it later.

at that point Stamper had nothing to lose. w/o that job he's nothing.

>I get that, but he still has to admit to Frank that he kept
>the journal. He doesn't know how Frank will react, and after
>Russo and the journalist my best guess is not great.

high risk - Frank would either kill him for threatening Frank's position or laud him for having the balls and the foresight to hold on to the journal for leverage. b/c Frank himself would've held on to the journal to use as Stamper used it.

game recognize.

Even
>after burning the evidence in front of him he's gotta sell
>Frank (and by proxy, Claire) on trusting him again.

he knows he can't trust Stamper completely. Frank and Claire are both smart enough to know that they cannot trust anyone totally. i think they can live w/that. i think Frank actually respects it. lol

Shit,
>that's a tough enough sell after he's fallen off the wagon.
>The better play would be tell Dunbar some fake info (maybe
>with forged evidence if she's skeptical) that the Underwoods
>could easily disprove on the off-chance she tries to use it

yes but that doesn't send the message to Frank - that he needs to bring Stamper back into the fold b/c he's dangerous. i like your plan but it could easily result in a pat on the back and a big 'thanks, pal!' from Frank and not a job. putting Frank in a weak position allowed Stamper to call his own shot.

fuck you.

Shit was nicely wrapped up.
All she had to do was pass the mic.

I don't understand.

character to this moment

I hated every bit of it

it's also really suspending the belief of fiction of the world. even as a mirror for contemporary politics I don't think a first lady would ever do what she did. i mean the consequences would be disasterous

they've made each other. both equal parts to their whole

it's pretty much been the subtext of the whole show. It's a semi-radical representation of partnership.

it's also the reason I hate the writers made her act that way. From Frank's affairs to Claire's, both playing a part in the murders of the journalist and the senator, and their constant quieting of activist or dissenters. Now all of a sudden because this man gives her the I won't bend in my beliefs speech and my marriage is a shame, Claire has an epiphany, fuck that.

not exactly
he really would not have gotten to where he is without her
period
no other partner
so yes her
only her
she made him

>it's pretty much been the subtext of the whole show. It's a
>semi-radical representation of partnership.

i guess
it may have been more interesting if they truly explored it
but it felt like a very side issues
couched in other things
almost like they were afraid to really go there and state thats what this season was about
so it became very very meh

>it's also the reason I hate the writers made her act that way.

i thin she's been had that problem
thats why she ran the first time
she had a glimpse of the road this was going down
go convinced back
and found herself in the same damn place
she knew
but really didn't because frank is all talk
but when it comes down to it
not bout it
and figured maybe for other people
but for her?
he real partner he would come through
and again and again
dude balked

REALLY bout it
politics and dealing with someone like frank in a marriage will fuck that head up
you lose touch with reality and what really matters

I appreciate that kind of realness. That 'you can do anything!' mantra is mostly a bullshit slogan that ignores realities for most of us. The best part of the talk was - it's fine to have dreams but not if they're fantasies. I strongly agreed with that.

I don't see where else and how long they can take this.

Season 1>Season 3>Season 2. This season is miles better than 2. With that said 2 had the best episode of the series thus far and that was the first episode of season 2.

Initial thoughts - started off good and I loved how throughout the season Remy told Frank people are loyal but don't burn bridges with them even if they disagree with you.I was glad to see Freddie pop back up too!

Still sitting with this....

- thought the season was great overall. i was glad to see Frank struggle and have to really dig out of some shit

- loved Petrov, the russian president. obviously modeled after Putin.

- was glad rachel got killed. that shit needed to die anyway

- happy that doug got back in the fold. like i was legit geeked to the point where i go to my wife 'ah sheeeit, doug is back on the team!'

- claire leaving seemed like a forced story to me, so we'll see where it goes. like, as much shit as they've been thru like oh, murdering people and stuff, and THIS is why you're leaving? i think they are too symbiotic and they'll be back together near the end of season 4. a president can't be going through a divorce.

I didn't mind it being toned down a tad from the previous seasons because the writing was still good. Episodes 3 & 6 were the best, most intense. I liked the dynamic between Frank & Petrov. Dunbar as an opponent was a cake walk. Needed more drama & edge in some of these episodes. Amped for season 4, tho.

Bc they're all up in this reply.

This was Claire's season. She got that Frank Underwood treatment all season and finally had enough! What was it all for? To get him to the WH. And what about her? To be a trophy? An assistant? Wtf? I feel her. After Frank so casually threw her under the bus more than once but especially with Petrov in the desert it's like - why? He clearly didn't value her work - blaming her for decisions he made after he failed to vet her intel bc she's his wife - and he wasn't going to help her as she'd supported him. And he couldn't even fuck her while looking at her. Plus he's clearly gay or whatever (I knew he was gonna try it with that writer and that Meachum would be jealous) so what does HE offer HER?? Why stay? And have her biggest secret nearly exposed. Then he hires the traitor who threatened to expose it? Without even talking to her. Why stay? She's the one with the money anyway - her family has money. So why? Fuck all of that.

fuck you.

They were great to watch together...no couple is more interesting than them when they have each other's backs...but by the end of that ep I was with her on this. She had to go. Can't wait to see how it all plays out next season.

I totally missed Meachun's hate for the author as being jealousy...that's brilliant. Nice touch by the writers.

loved the fighting between him and Petrov. God, that was great. Every time Petrov was on the screen I was locked in. I liked that Underwood's marriage and staff were falling apart, but too much of the season focused on the back-and-forth of AmWorks. It seems unlikely that he could rebound from lower approval ratings than Walker (meaning less than 8%, has any real president had ratings that low?) given everything that went wrong for him here. Presumably it was the hope of the AmWorks program that helped him recover, but even that was a bit of a stretch (even for this show). Both foreign and domestic policy were going wrong. Sometimes the show gets a little too clever for its own good before, but for some reason I thought it was more believable in previous seasons.

Stamper's storyline was all over the place, but I'm glad he decided to kill Rachel. Didn't want to see that storyline go on. His keeping of the journal made no sense to me. I get that he'd feel slighted and would do something to gain Dunbar's trust, but it seemed too risky to hang on to it in any capacity. Even if Dunbar would never use that info, it still has a chance to leak the second he tells her. He's too thorough for all that.

also, the sex scenes in this show are ridiculous. namely their music choices during said scenes. i giggle every time

The OG House of Cards ended when Francis became Prime Minister.

To take it even further Francis got popped in the book.

So it's all up in the air as to when/how/if the House of Cards will come tumbling down.

I don't like what they did with Claire's character.
people don't change that easily. this is the same woman that threatened to kill an unborn child. I was barely moved by anything that happened in that jail. So why was Claire so shook?
So shook that she would break diplomatic protocol after campaigning to show would make a good ambassador.

beautifully illustrated in the contrast between two interactions:
1)Remy with eager black cop
2)Remy with rib shack chef turned groundskeeper
they made sure to have the characters call each other brother in both interactions

black "kinship" amongst black men is a double edge sword. the familiarity can be endearing. other times it breeds contempt.

the acting, composition of scenes, the set design, the wardrobe, the colors/tone, and quite a few of the dialogues and quotes are worth the price of admission

BUT, sorry I'm with the folk who just do not believe Claire's turn. SoWhat did a decent outline of "why", but I still don't buy it. this woman has participated and advocated all kinds of ill shit and now she wants to waver. I mean what was her motivation to be US ambassador? Why?

Dunbar was a terrible choice as an antagonist. None of us believed she had the will to power like frank

Stamper, i glad he's back on his game, and so glad the ended the plotline with Rachel (honestly should've deaded it with Stampers "death" last season), but the way the wrote it had many flaws pretentious_username brought up above

the Writer, Thomas(?), was borderline corny, acting like this pseudo therapist when he oozed creep the whole time. I wanted Meachum to knuckle him up on a few occasions, smug lil bitch.

I hope Remy comes back in the fold some how I don't want him on the periphery. He's easily one of my favorites on the show. glad Freddie was back as well

Seth actually became a favorite of mine too this season, for as little on screen time as he had.

this show needs a dope ass woman of color in the fold. Dunbar's assistant wasn't enough.

lastly, I'm with Bwood. Season four should be the end and it should be with a bullet to Frank. They low-key trying to build the whole tyrant angle anyway

The new Claire has now. And she kept wondering what it was all for? They/she were at the summit and she wasn't satisfied. Bc clearly being Francis's rock wasn't enough for her. And she was so tied to him that she felt she couldn't make any moves of her own on her own. Even the ambassador position - that came thru him. He gave it and then took it away. The WH is his - the Oval only had one chair. The old Claire wouldn't have blinked at Corrigan's story but the old Claire still had getting to the WH as a goal. New Claire is in the WH and sees it ain't worth what she'd done to get it. Not for HER at least.

i think she was really affected by what Corrigan said about his partner - who was doting and affectionate and loving on the outside, but inside the story was different.

and i think she was moved by his conviction - that he was willing to die for something he believed. does she have that much conviction? does Frank? they're both willing to kill for what they want but that's not the same thing.

but it's just very bad characterization is terms of change and growth within the scope of the show. It's not bad, just the wrong notes IMO

she had other opportunities to have this moment and chose to power over others with the same conviction gay dude in the Russian jail had.

Claire had been a "radical" inversion of what women are typically represented to be in the popular imaginary. She was not emotional, or purely out for social capital, or material gain. Most of Claire's previous choices were tactical, cerebral, in accordance with the will to power. She cheated and was done with it. She threatened to ruin a woman's career and kill her baby and was done with it. She asked her man to handle his side piece and when he did she was "good let's move on". She was with Frank and Stamper in the scheme to kill the Senator and Rachel. She bamboozled the former first lady and that woman who was sexually assaulted...

this "just isn't enough" angle is wack because it colors her into the typical corner of the "woman are just never satisfied," that gets written over and over.

the Claire that was established in the first two seasons would've acknowledged that trying to be ambassador was the wrong move for various reasons. Would've never have had Frank forced into those decisions. Claire would've buried Dunbar and Jackie her fucn self.

this that shit I don't like. But where they've painted into her now, it's cool that she's leaving him, because it's what she should do, but also what Frank is doing is hella wack and dumb and I had to suspend my belief a lot cause in "our world" he doesn't even beat stank face Dunbar with that short track record.

all this to say the writing just got lazy IMO

>this "just isn't enough" angle is wack because it colors her

naw.

i think it's the opposite - she's not satisfied w/being First Lady and being able to say she 'made the President'. maybe she thought that was enough for her and has found it's not. she wants more. and she's w/a man who is not interested in helping her achieve it - at least not as interested as she was in helping him achieve his goal. and she's clear now that getting him to the WH was HIS goal she was there to service it. i dunno if she'd fooled herself before into thinking som'n else was going on or that the goal was enough for both of them. but now that she's there w/him it's clear to her that it's not enough.

that's not the typical 'women are never satisfied' motif. this woman is particularly ambitious - in a way women aren't typically portrayed.

>the Claire that was established in the first two seasons

yeah, if she were still trying to get Frank in the WH. but now he's there. and keeping him there ain't enough FOR HER. b/c she has more ambition than that. than to be his rock. to be the woman behind the man. or even the woman next to the man. that's not her. or it's not all she is. and Frank doesn't see it and as long as she's in his shadow no one else will see it either.

it became really clear when she was like okay ambassador

her aim is also politics she said it that was the deal
when she said her age i was like oh snap she's right she has to lay the foundation now

meanwhile frank hemmed
on some what about me
hawed
on some what about me

serious sideeye there

yeah he did it
then she realized everything she is doing
dude is STILL on some what about me shit
nigga i MADE you wtf
what about you?! you there! what about ME

yeah she really really realized again
cause that running away in seasons 1 she was like maybe i'm not about this life
it hit her again
and then suicidal dude
she's like
i'm really not bout it
HE is bout it

you right killing someone is not the same as suicide for a cause
frank stands for himself
she stands for frank to further her causes
and she's realizing its all being subsumed for francis

she does want a political position for herself. and that Iowa woman saying she'd vote for Claire coupled w/her being the reason Frank won Iowa probably stoked that fire in her.

she asked Francis what it's all for and he said it's for the WH - but it was clear it was for HIS TIME in the WH. he wasn't working to get HER there. and i think she wants it for herself. and now sees that Francis won't help her get it. and if he did help her get it it would just be tainted by an asterisk. she wants it w/o being in his shadow. w/o needing his approval. w/o him being in control of it.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 0

And Claire leaving Frank at season's end was pretty much telegraphed from episode 1, that is when the episode wasn't fixated on Doug, which was like 54 of its 57-minute running time.

I'm exaggerating but you know what I mean.

Even Frank's grand plans and schemes came up short and not thrilling at all. I was hoping that Frank would have found a way to have the biographer offed, because he annoyed me.

On the plus side, I liked most of the campaign trail stuff, and it was cool to see Remy get some action, even if his police stop scene was a little contrived, and the shit with him and Jackie wasn't interesting in the slightest. I was also eager to see what Doug would do once he finally tracked down Rachel, but even the payoff for that was like... just there.

As far as the leads go, I guess the idea was that if there are two ruthless people who plot and scheme to get to the top of the mountain, then there's nowhere else for them to turn but on each other. And while I dig the idea of seeing more pressure and tension leading to what appears to be the end of the Underwood marriage, ultimately the season as a whole just didn't come together for me.

I'll probably check for S4, but this show (which has ALWAYS been pretty goofy) was just too damn much at times.

That and I couldn't bring myself to care as much about Doug as the show requires.

YES SPOILERS

I'M WARNING YOU

******************************

Appreciated there being slightly less Machiavellian scheming (as appealing as it is for drama, I have trouble fully buying into the covered up murders) and a much deeper dive into the motivations of all the characters... I REALLY liked Remy's crisis of confidence (I hope he's not done though..) and the relationship between Petrov and Frank was handled brilliantly.

I was saying it all season, so I'm not going to stop just because she says she's leaving him for an end of season cliffhanger... by the time they get to polling day, it'll be an Underwood/Underwood ticket fueled by the book coming out one way or another and the US public falling for them as a team.

Stamper's journey this season was fucking amazing.

Claire airing Petrov out at his own press conference was fucking amazing.

"Go fuck yourself" was fucking amazing.

The Mandala was fucking amazing.

The composition and lighting in every god damn scene was FUCKING AMAZING.

In response to Reply # 148

To me.

Season 2 was a big ridiculous soap opera. Which has its appeal to a lot of people. But I'm not watching HOC to see Scandal.

They still haven't quite found the same chemistry they did in S1, though.

Over acted, written in excess, poorly paced (there's often whole episodes where NOTHING happens)...

This show is as tedious as it gets. There's no clear protagonist, who should I watch this for? It sucks. Through three seasons it's regressed dramatically by the year, to the point I won't check for season 4 with enthusiasm. I'm done with it. It's not very good and everyone knows it.

I think there is.

Again, it's certainly a goofy show (for better and worse,) but is Frank not the protagonist?

...I liked season 3 better than season 2, because I felt like I got more Claire on screen. And because I felt like I got more context about Frank and Claire's relationship.

Loved that one of the final scenes of the season took place in the Oval office, where Frank and Claire fight one another for power.
Loved that the scene opened with Claire sitting in Frank's chair in the OVAL OFFICE, right where she should be. I think Claire will run/aim for president...

LOL. And typically, Frank, in the power struggle with Claire pulls the shameless "but I'm physically stronger than you"/"you're a woman" gut punch.

I think, the Claire we've seen, so far, is a Claire that's been HOLDING BACK. Can't wait for Season 4.

It's definitely Claire's turn. And really, what should her mistakes/liablities or not w/ the UN position have to do with a damn thing? MAKE IT WORK, Frank. Knock some knees. Get Claire what she wants. Because they sure as hell have made it work for him. It's not like Frank can't make it work. It's that he WON'T and will fix his mouth to call it a risk. Won't help Claire willingly because really it doesn't help HIM as much as it helps HER.

Doug's subterranean weirdness really creeps me out. I didn't like the Doug focus of the season. I can't with Doug. It's like...the show is made up of a cast full of unlikable, bad, people...and then Doug. Ugh.

As others have said...this is Claire's season....

From everybody who has said why would they break up now....realize that the entire goal was to get into the White House. If there was ever a woman ill suited to be a trophy...it's Claire Underwood.

I personally think she has herself to blame for pushing the issue on the UN Ambassador deal...but if she didn't Frank would have left her on the sidelines for the duration.

Doug is back. YESSSSS!!!!

That Debate, nigga?!? Whoooooooooo!!!

Nice Be Black moment w/Remy and Freddie. Another dope moment with Freddie and his grandson.

I fucked with this season heavy.
