"House of Cards season 2 (SPOILERS)"
Sat Feb-15-14 12:08 PM by ZooTown74

This show really saved me after Breaking Bad ended. I am rewatching season 1 and catching mad shit I didn't the first go-round, especially all the foreshadowing.

If Netflix wanted to be really smart, they would "leak" the first episode a few days early and let the internet set itself ablaze. Then they would get additional coverage in a few days when the whole season drops. But they probably want to keep their business model wholly intact. This was, after all, the first show do drop all eps. of a season online at once, and a significant part of the "show's story" (not show's plotline.)

That's how to open the season and close the show. I hadn't really thought about Francis not addressing the audience before that. But how Spacey played it in the mirror was fantastic.

This shit better get Emmys this year, especially Kevin

they decided to circle back around and jump the dead sharks body with that death in episode 1.

It is like Frank is playing chess instead of checkers and when he gets checked he just pulls a gun to win the game, it makes the show less fun to watch. Every time Frank is in a jam he just kills his opponent rather than out maneuver and out smart them.

This show is getting silly.

Exactly. I think it was rather the dumb the way he went about it, but his arrogance makes him think he could get away with stuff like that. Also, I think he thought he was "right" because Peter was a suicidal mess anyway.

yeah, he definitely thought he was putting peter out of his misery the same way he was the dog. hence why he loses zero sleep over it.

"I'm willing to let that baby shrivel up and die inside you."

My wife and I have been debating "Who wears the pants" in the Underwood house.
That moment happened and she looked at me and said, "Pants."

While gangsta (cause we played that scene twice), I still think Frank wears the pants.

And IMO she handled her dirt much better than Frank. It was so precise. Didn't give ol girl the time to even piece it all together before she was forced to make the only decision she had. She gave ol girl the crash course in that ngo life, and now she gets it all to herself. LOL. Some cold shit.

the way they communicate without communicating, the fact that they ALWAYS have each other's backs no matter what's going on, how equal they are and how well they complement each other...the level of trust between them...it's so damn awesome to watch. not that i would want to live their lives but i would love to have that "kind" of relationship. they really are down for each other in the deepest way possible.

it was all but foreshadowed through the whole episode. Zoe kept asking all these questions and getting closer and closer to finding out what Frank did. Then listen to the convo with the BBQ guy when he told him about the best way to kill hogs, just BAM!!! and do it. Next scene is her meeting up with him on a subway platform. He made sure she deleted all connections to him off her phone, and then let her hang herself by asking all those stupid questions. As soon as she started walking over there to him I was like "bye Zoe....."

Claire: oh holy shit. Somehow this trauma is going to play out in some surprising ass ways for her, I know it will.

Lucas ain't going nowhere RIGHT with continuing his investigation. Even if he KNOWS Zoe went out the way she did, he ain't about that conspiracy theory/I'ma come for the man who murdered by side piece and take him out or die trying life...he's not.

Frank: still powerful, but clearly the chinks are slowly being seen in his armor.

I mean, damn, i'm on pins and needles trying to figure out where they're going to go from here...and I can't figure it out and I *FUCKING* LOVE THAT!!!!!!!!

Man, House of Cards, Helix, and Hannibal (coming February 28th): Like, all the H shows are giving me LIFE right now. Seriously, I'm happy as fuck right now.

But House of Cards is killing it...next to True Detective of course.

Trying to get those Emmy's. Last year I predicted Spacey would take it, but Walter White was too much. There's no chance Spacey gets it this year either. Bryan Cranston's last season of Breaking Bad is gonna win out. But right now, I don't see anyone beating Robin Wright.

>Freddie losin' his biz and money, shit broke my heart. he was

this was another one of my favorite moments out of this season -- the final scene between Freddy + Frank. when Freddy is the one that asserts himself first, says there's no reason to pretend their relationship was just business, his only purpose in life is pushing forward. I was struck by the fact that their friendship likely existed because they're both the same kind of man -- willful, direct, unencumbered by pettiness that serves no purpose. the difference is that Freddy is a black man from the hood and Frank is a white man with privilege. switch their two situations, and they might very well both end up in the same place. they're both killers, they both hold up survival as the prime motivation, they both harbor no illusions about sentimentality.

very ancillary little moment in the series, but I'm really glad they found a way to make time for it.

from their first scenes you could sense/read they were the same "type" of man from different sides of the track

and the way they were just brutally honest with each other at Freddy's table was a fantastic moment in the series

I did appreciate Frank was gunna go to bat for Freddie, before Freddy's son popped off

They are a model marriage. Their relationship is what drew me into the show. Because from the first scenes you could see a level of connection that was real. It was hard for em to watch the indiscretions but they were both just so real about it it's not even indescretion. They know each other well enough to know hot those things fit into the relationship. Ultimately they are both working for the team and in the end I think they know it's the only team that matters.

It was an understated line maybe not form this ep but

"Let me know what I can do for you."

"You can come visit me in jail."

They play it real through and through. And man it's great to watch.

son.....more breasts and salaciousness than almost any episode of the series.

I'm surprised Stamper didn't whip it out in the bushes and wack one out right there at the window.

And the Underwoods might be DA' REALEST couple on television. Fuck someone else? Meh, it's cool, just don't fuck up the future. Sex scandal? Meh, baby have a cigarette.

Secret service guy has a drink or two off duty? Meh, guest dick in the bedroom for you and me!

And the next morning is normal as fuck.

Think about it from his pespective. Wasn't he just a beat cop when he met Frank? Frank got him a promotion THEN got him in the Secret Service on a COVETED detail. That's a MAJOR come up. Shit, if someone took me from accountant, to Contoller to CFO all in a lil' more than a year, I might have to let them smash too.

how Meacham was the one that initiated. He started caressing Frank's hand. I was like "o_O Word Meacham? Talk about "secret" service!" We all know that Claire and Frank have an open relationship. I was expecting it to be Meacham hits Claire. But then they were sitting at the table when Frank got home, so then I thought, maybe it was gonna be the cuckold situation. But nope, Meacham was down for some aksion.

with meachum. Can't see how this Stamper mental health stuff will play out. I just think he might murder rachel.

I knew Frank was setting up the Prez to take him down. They will do it by dividing first lady and prez. Oh and I'm glad they conviniently ditched Peter's old secretary/gf. Her plot was going nowhere, her presence was too contrived, and there were too many uninteresting characters taking away screen time from Frank and Clare (including that drawn out reporter dude and his cyber crime.

Last two episodes were perfection.

There was definitely some hedging about Season 3 in 2013. Not that it wasn't going to happen, but just that it wasn't a given due to the schedules and desires of the cast.

it was a jumbled mess. It got real soap opera-ey for me. Like so much shit happening and of course more lies and more deceit. The President was just a fucking moron to be following for Frank's bullshit. Like this fool just got picked to be your VP and every decision he has made has turned into a mess. But you still go to him? Come on the President cant be that stupid. Just when you think okay enough with the 100 different story lines then you got the new whip fucking Remy, oh yeah lets give Freddy some more screen time, oh yeah lets turn Doug into a creep and give him more screen time that makes absolutely no sense. Oh shit how do I forget the threesome? You knew something was going to happen there. What the fuck was the point of that? Way to much going on. But the performances were on point.

***SPOILERS I GUESS***

but the last bit where frank was successfully convincing any and everyone of his good intentions despite his betrayals in the past (+ the recent past at that) started to take me out of the show. there are some big logical leaps taken by some characters that i just didn't buy (linda resigning, president garret malleable buying into everything frank says, jackie siding with frank at the last minute, etc.). it kind of ruins any sense of frank getting caught or punished because he's just going to use his maxed out "persuade" skill to get what he wants. i guess there is a challenge in writing dialogue like that but it's moot in a way: i know frank is going to talk his way out of everything so the threat may as well not be there. it's all mechanical at a point, if that makes sense

that said, this show is supremely well-made. i literally can't think of a single technical thing wrong with it. it looks amazing, all the acting is on point, and most of the writing is excellent. it's very hard to tear yourself away from, even if you believe a character isn't acting in line with their past actions

i did like the few moments of regret frank and claire displayed. finally some humanization for these genuinely terrible and unlikable people. i think the last time either of them were humanized was the season 1 episode where frank visited his alma mater. it's interesting that frank didn't bat an eye at the idea and act of murdering someone but had an real soft spot for freddy (or just his ribs, i couldn't tell)

also this season got super shakespearean at times. when frank met feng in the grave site of frank's ancestor i was half expecting a ghost to pop up and issue ill omens

I agree that the manipulation of the president in this season stretched the limits of believability, but I kept reminding myself that our real VP started a war to secure a government contract for his old company and it made it all go down a little easier

ya know, but the ring was still a nice touch.

first season felt more mamet which was good in its own way but i really liked the shakespearean aspect of this season. it started with the 'you didn't foget about me did you" after that it was shakespearean predictable in how it would unfold. but like shakespeare knowing what's going to happen doesn't take away from the thrill of it.

if we understand Francis as a man solely motivated by the desire for power, what motivates him once he's reached the most powerful position available?

I couldn't help but be struck by the way in which the show carefully shows Francis standing for nothing -- he's nominally a Democrat, but his major domestic policy pushes are eliminating collective bargaining for teachers and raising the entitlement age, decidedly conservative maneuvers. just when you think his wife might be the principled faction of the Underwood administration, Claire cynically defangs the sexual assault reform in order to further her husband's agenda. throughout two seasons, the show is careful to show that the sole motivation for Mr. Underwood is the quest for more power, then on the close of season 2 he finally reaches the pinnacle of power he's wanted for so long.

so what now? that's the question that interests me following the closing scene. does he continue to accumulate more power, in the same way that rich people never stop getting richer? does he finally reveal some humanity as he wields his power for a purpose beyond advancement? is the ruthless, inhuman power-monger secretly the person we wish would run the world, because American interests would be better served with a man like that in charge?

I don't care about dead fucking Stamper (sadly trying to re-create his own power lab in his father, Underwood's, image -- Stamper got what he deserved), a scandal like that would be a blip for the newly seated Underwood. of all outcomes, it was possibly the best (and big time shout out to the "I never give a person a third chance" line where it wasn't immediately clear whether Underwood was addressing us, the audience, of Stamper in the room -- truly making the gears turn within this drama), the only thing I care about is the answer to the question "what next?"

Let us not forget.... ALL OF THIS happened because he got passed over for the Sec of State position he was promised. It's like he went on a slow playout of Lord Frey's Red Wedding for breaking an oath. And he systematically made every single person involved pay.

So now that he's on top? I imagine he's going to use that power to keep that power.

I guess I just assumed all along that the Secretary of State position was the best place to be for him in order to make a run for President, but then again that was pretty early on and given everything Underwood did since then, pretty silly to think he wanted that position just to bide time and stay above the fray in Congress.

I guess I also never considered his run to the Oval Office as a revenge mission, but it does boil down to that in the end, doesn't it? I've just been watching through the lens of the will to power. I don't even really understand what would give Frank satisfaction besides more power, so that's why the Presidency seems like a very interesting place for him to be.

Because I totally have watched it the other way. He played team player. Helped get this President elected with the understanding that for his work, he'd get that Sec State position. They pulled that football away from him when he was ready to kick the fuck out of it, and he's been doing nothing but getting revenge. First against the guy they tapped over him. Then he systematically removed everyone else who played a part in his getting fucked over. Linda (the Chief of Staff). Tusk. And the President. I don't think he coveted the position as much as he ended up with it after leveling everybody who fucked him over.

but a dead Stamper could lead to Rachel Posner (she has his car) which could lead to uncovering Frank's involvement in Russo's murder which gives Goodwin's story credibility (hence why Liam McPoyle... i mean Jimmi Simpson is still around at the season finale.)

but Gavin (Jimmy Simpson) knows that Goodwin was set up, and he knows about Doug and Rachel.

We know he can get access to phone records and tell exactly when a contact was deleted from the phone...

So Gavin's gotta get the Zoe treatment soon or, to paraphrase Vonnegut, the excrement will come into violent contact with the air conditioning unit in Rachel Posner's apartment.

too easy to deny -- she's a hooker, Stamper is an addict

and any serious allegations are coming from a reporter in jail for pleading guilty to cyber-terrorism charges. any other corroborating evidence would be coming from a hacker working as an FBI asset due to a criminal past, and the corroborating evidence would be illegally stolen cell phone records from an amazingly intricate hacking scheme. it would be way too easy to discredit the people bringing the allegations, and the allegations remain entirely circumstantial (Posner, a professional escort, stayed at the same hotel as a politician, Russo, during a fundraiser -- so circumstantial it proves nothing but grasping at straws). even if Posner decides to talk to someone, she doesn't know enough about any further details besides being arrested with Russo and then playing him into a relapse later.

and besides all that, like other reply says -- you can always just blame it on the dead man who can't defend himself. obviously Stamper was fucking up, Underwood just has to wash his hands of him. Posner killing Stamper was probably the best thing that could have happened to Underwood as far as the hacker holding the keys to further allegations, now Underwood has a patsy that can't defend himself.

Yes he has the power but he wasn't elected to the office. He'll probably pardon Tusk, still potential issues with Remy, and the Republicans still have a shot at taking lots of seats in the House. Even when Frank reached the office of VP, he still was fully involved with the runnings of the House. So the next season can focus on reelection and keeping the Republicans from taking the House. Or they might take the House and run into a bunch of issues like our current president.

Frank has to makje sure the Dems keep the House, Remy is still out there (he pulled out from testifying after his "boss" ratted out the POTUS in the hearing), Doug's death has to be handled...I'm assuming Seth will take Doug's old job and Remy might get brought on to fill Doug's old role. The question is, who becomes VP? Does the majority whip get it to reward her for whipping impeachment votes? How does that look politically?

Burch was also Tusk's boy, Frank will be looking to take him out. Lots of stuff for S3 to sort out, for sure.

I get Frank was playing a gambit, but I don't think he could've convinced the POTUS so easily, although they did establish early on, he was a bit gullible and easily influenced.

I figured the point of his character is that he is a wholly self-interested parasite, eager to latch on to the biggest shark he can. he doesn't just want to do press work, he wants to do press work for the biggest fish in the pond.

so comms guy works with Tusk / Remy, right up until he sees an opportunity to align with Frank. Frank recognizes his ruthless nature and allows him to play the game with him. comms guy holds up, because he sees that political power like Frank's can outlast money.

as far as the drama goes, it does move the plot like you said, but I also think it helps reveal a side of Stamper -- the possessive side.

In response to Reply # 160

near the end there?

there wasn't any real reference to it afterward either, it was just this weird power broker scene where a bit player is standing off to the side, stealing all the scenery while doing barely anything because he seems so out of place. Seemed like they were going for a pretty classic "knight leaves a pawn to die so he can get closer to the opposing king" type situation, but there was really no precedent for seeing him in that room.

..its not everyday that you find a series with this much consistancy

again, robin wright penn continues to own every ounce of her screen time.

as a matter of fact, my only gripe with this series is that kevin spacey still doesn't have a worthy adversary.

..key word being worthy

while he's faced plenty opposition along his route to the presidency, none of them are actually in his weight class.

*tusk was merely a money man, who uses that money to gain political ties/favors.

everyone in this series is less than (with the his wife being the lone exception).

hopefully that changes in the next season.

and I'm not quite sure I completely agree. Tusk had dude on the ropes. Frank was shook for a while. Only when he decided to "launch the missile" and put everyone's business out there did Frank start to swing the momentum back his way. Even then, it was touch and go until he sent that letter to the President.

..he was the face of frank's angst regarding president walker

he had plenty of room to maneuver, and all the means to entertain. truth is, he was never really an adversary because he holds no rank in government. he has money, but even that is limited (and subject to policy).

Chapter 17 (episode 4) puts her right back in the Emmy race

And as far as I could tell, the only "implausibility" was the way Underwood killed off Zoe, which was really shitty and telegraphed and obvious and dumb and howlingly stupid

But ultimately, who cares? The shock of it was the point

I don't know/care how accurate the cyberterrorist shit was

I don't know/care how accurate the political maneuvering was

I was entertained for about 9 of the season's 13 episodes, and that was enough for me

Though it shole woulda been nice to see the black man get some on-camera action

Black man obviously sleeping with a white chick, fine. Black man fingering a white chick (with her order to finish)? Eh, going to the edge, but ok. Black man beating the white pussy up? Not gonna happen outside Bangbros.

Still, good to see Remy get some. I hate he had to go out, but that shit was inevitable from S1. I'm more mad how Freddy had to go out (though I was happy he got some run this season)

I just wanted to know why Frank saw him as such a great friend -it couldn't have only have been the ribs..lol. With all of Frank's sociopathic behavior there was that mutual respect that he had for Freddy on a friend level that he didn't have in the political arena for obvious reasons..lol.

But I'm guessing he saw Freddy as his consiglerie in a sense maybe.

Not saying it couldn't be good. But some shit is just better left alone. I mena you can already tell that this is the natural end. The things that are left are so trivial you can tell it's just dangling carrots to go into a next season.

Go make another series like this. Don't just keep making this, cause eventually it's inevitable you'll ruin it.

Though, I kinda think the hacker guy is going to release all of his ATT phone records, indicting Frank in Zoe's death, which could be interesting.

I think the hacker could play a big role in season 3. Now that Doug is dead and can't offer the protection he and the hacker discussed, I can see him going off the deep end and trying to ruin everyone before he's killed or jailed.

At least, I hope Willimon is thinking that way. Frank's been unstoppable so far, but now that he has what he was gunning for it'd be perfect to see everything fall apart around him now. If Community could go dark on season 3, House of Cards can go pitch black.

1. A character is in a zone of comfort,
2. But they want something.
3. They enter an unfamiliar situation,
4. Adapt to it,
5. Get what they wanted,
----------you are HERE-----------
6. Pay a heavy price for it,
7. Then return to their familiar situation,
8. Having changed.

Wait until more people have finished up (and I have time to break everything down). As with anything, it wasn't perfect, and there are more than a few things that I have a gripe with. None of that stopped my from loving this season.

And I'll put the last 4 minutes of Ep.1 and Ep. 13 against almost anything. Whether there's a soliloquy (ep 1) or silence (ep 13) Spacey OWNED it.

His goal is not to help people, it's to advance himself, by any means necessary.

If he has to do evil things to people - directly or indirectly - it's 'ok' in his book.

Any 'good' thing he touches - like education legislation - is just a by-product of his ultimate intent.

Which is self-fulfillment, pure and simple.

To me, that's why he's not right.

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.
