"The Leftovers (HBO)"

Man I'm still a sucker for James Blake

http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/04/25/the-leftovers-new-date/

The Rapture is coming…a little bit later than expected.
HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel The Leftovers will now premiere on Sunday, June 29 at 10 p.m. ET, instead of June 15 as originally announced. The series follows a group of people who are left behind after what appears to be the global Rapture.
The cast includes Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Charlie Carver, Max Carver, Carrie Coon, Ann Dowd, Michael Gaston, Emily Meade, Annie Q, Margaret Qualley, Amanda Warren, and Chris Zylka. Damon Lindelof (Lost) is the series showrunner.
The first trailer will premiere this Sunday, April 27 at 9 p.m. ET before the new episode of Game of Thrones on HBO.

Read the book but didn't love it. Interesting concept with uneven execution. And this is one of those cases where I won't care if the show wildly diverges from what was written.

a lot of shitting to be done on it. The writer of the book, Tom Perotta, is also involved with the show.

And all I know is the book hit me where I live when I read it a few months ago, so

dude let it go. LMAO like you need to get over the Lindelof hate...LOST was in trouble even before it ended. Remember he *AND* Carlton Cuse ran that show after JJ bounced. they both deserve the blame and i'd lay it more at Cuse's feet because he was more senior than Lindelof and didn't reign him in.

Also, he *AND* Jon Spaihts both wrote Prometheus. The movie as a whole had serious faults that SHOULD have been corrected, but Ridley chose not to do it. Lindelof did the heavy lifting on Prometheus but Spaihts and Scott deserve equal share of the blame.

I feel like this concept has legs and he'll know how to properly do something with it it depending on how far it goes.

Plus, HBO doesn't play if a show isn't performing, they'll end it and they don't give naaan a fuck about who's running it (i.e NBC needs to grow a pair and end REVOLUTION. But, it's JJ Abrams and they're probably STILL popping champagne bottles because they got him to do a show for them...)

Thought it was on point.

Intriguing and somewhat subtle. Interested to see where this goes.

Sure this show will get the haterade flowing, but I like the tone they set. Acting is strong as well. I'm just hoping this doesn't get watered down as the mystery unravels.

Kind of reminiscent to Six Feet Under.

I like the subtle playing out of the main family dynamic and how it played out with the wife. I think its even more tragic that the wife was not one of the ones disappeared but she chose to join that smoking cult for reasons yet unknown because for all intents and purposes they still have their core family unit. But her voluntary disappearance broke the family up. That's kind of deep and fucked up now that I think about it.

I know most of the drama is playing out in this one fictional town but I would like to see more of the consequences for the world. Like for example what if a pilot(s) were disappeared while flying a full jet or air traffic controllers or something important like that.

I do like what they are doing with the animals that's tripped out. I'll stick around for the season.

Didn't look like her tho. At first that's why I thought he was so fucked up. Imaging digging out your wife and then she's just .... gone.

That would fuck your mind up. Then I thought, oh he was fucking that other bitch came home and found out his wife was gone.

Now I don't know WHAT to think. That scene was mad emotional tho.

"I was at home, cleaning out the shutters," was most likely not fucking his wife.

And yeah, he could just be being polite and not telling a stranger his business, but I don't think we get to see (and we presume is) what he actually was doing then follow that up with a lie if he's not lying about it.

It was pretty trite but who knows, maybe that's how high school parties are nowadays. Losing your virginity is as easy as spinning an iPhone.

I really dig this. Yo...did something happen to Liv Tyler's character (besides the QR following her around) that made her want to join. I remember she stole Amy Brenneman in the jaw but did something specific happen that made her change her mind?

With shows like this, I usually get stuck on waiting for an explanation about what caused the supernatural occurrence. I don't think we're going to get an answer on that. There's still that question of what/why but focusing on the characters' reaction to the disappearances almost makes me forget that there's a big mystery.

there was just a general blandness to everything...acting. writing. cinematography. music.

the whole thing just felt like a boiled, unseasoned chicken breast.

the acting, all around, felt second rate, especially when inevitably compared to the other dramas on HBO. and i didn't believe a single moment involving the silent cult. just so contrived and unnatural.

the story has an interesting premise, but the world-building so far is pretty awful.

i was shocked to see Peter Berg's name in the final credits cuz i love the naturalistic, human performances he got in Friday Night Lights. it's difficult to overstate how wooden and unbelievable the acting was in this episode.

i'll stick with it for a couple more episodes. and i'm hopeful, but the pilot was basically an hour-long, low grade annoyance.

maybe Starz or a second-tier AMC show. but if you just compare the visuals to other HBO dramas (or even a show like Louie) , it's definitely out of its league. the shot selection, the framing, the staging of scenes are all...lethargic.

and I get it...everyone's sad, it's all about grieving, and I guess they're going for an understated, somber visual tone, but it just comes off as flat and limp. and coupled with some serious miscastings, the whole thing just feels cheap.

It established the world we're in quite well, actually.

This story lays out really well. I was reminded of the various character threads from the book. And no, they all don't "pay off" there, either. Which is fine.

Acting and tech specs were also quite good.

This shit is dark as fuck, but well worth watching.

There's zero reason to give a solitary fuck about anyone in this show.

The Super Secret Silent Smokers Squad are boring and do nothing but stand there and look super duper mysterious and creepy. Aerosmith's daughter was the only thing good about them, and that's only because she did such a great job at venting for the rest of us, screaming WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?!!!? At least.... until she does some WWE shit and jjoins S5.

The Angsty Teen Fuckathon was nothing but tawdry, voyeuristic, and cheap. Generic Main Character Who Is Conveniently The Police Chief's daughter did noting but mope and look like she really enjoys Linkin Park albums.

Oh, and everyone is connected! How clever and new. Generic Police Chief Guy's wife is in the S5 cult, his son is the transporter to an even more mysterious group headed up by Magic Black Guru Man.

The whole thing is just bland, bland, bland with bland, boring, generic, atmospheric music that's played way too fucking loud.

I'm not familiar with the book, but however good or bad that is, this adaptation is off to an awful start. It's fitting that Lindeloff's involved with this, since it's like all the shitty, annoying elements of Lost without the intriguing premise, engaging characters, and interesting mystery to make up for it.

We only saw Jill come in and go up the stairs

There was no reverse shot revealing the state of the kitchen

And unless I missed a line where Kevin told Jill that she was two days late with his car or something, all of this action took place on October 14

Liv Tyler's character mentioned how she's been with the GR for weeks while she was yelling out of frustration in the woods. There's another mention of how much time has elapsed since the first episode. I think it was the sheriff's character who said it's been 2 weeks that his men have been trying to look for the man in the truck (the guy who shoots dogs).

Even with the story time in between episodes, like Zoo, I don't know if there was a shot of the kitchen.

It's an intriguing show but it's a long ways from a great one. I was alone in my apartment and audibly sighed at the Magical Negro. I also wish all these characters weren't interconnected.

Had to save the pilot for tonight, I just felt like this was a show I'd need at least two episodes in a day to know where I'm at with it.

I was also cracking up throughout the actual use of James Blake in the episode. Peter Berg went and made a late-90s Bad Boy video out of that thing.

Like I had mixed feelings for the reverend. on the one hand, you see his life and you kind of empathize because this is all he has. he lost a lot...but then on the other hand his sister straight up was like "if you stop with the paper, i will give you the money..." and his need to talk about the about the bad ppl who disappeared outweighed his love of the church and wanting to keep it.

like i'm sure most of the ppl know everyone who left wasn't raptured. but that's like someone coming out with a paper of all those who died in 9/11 on some "why memorialize these fools when they were terrible" such a mess.

I fully expected him to get his ass whupped over that money tho. watching that scene and i was like why didn't he have an escort walk him to his car...why didn't he go directly there...WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS WIFE ?!?! the caretaker said she was only staying the night...did she roll out when he didn't return?

so many questions!!

it was a cool episode.

This show just makes you think so much

Key moments

-The casino and parking lot scene. I would have had 3 big ass Indian dudes escort me to my car. And why did he park so far away from the door? Have a valet go get my shit! And then I'm jetting the fuck off. He just sitting there basking in the glory.

-Meeting his wife and finding out what happened to her and bringing it back to the beginning. That was so depressing and tragic and really added to the damaging effect that loosing people randomly causes.

The conversation with his sister, with him revealing that her husband was cheating. Did anyone else notice that the picture of her husband was dude that played Lucas on House of Cards? I don't know if there was any significance to that by using a recognizable actor (at least to me) and not some random extra. Unless they are going to do a flashback or something later.

Lori in the backyard. I find her story really intriguing and I hope that we will get some kind of reunion with the Garvey's which looks like it's going to happen judging by the previews.

The Guilty Remnant buying the church on some fuck you shit. I saw that coming. Man that was so cold! Those fucking people are trolling the hell out of that town. And where are they getting funding from? They bought a whole cul-de-sac and now the church with cash. And they got to be going through gallons of bleach a day. Clorox ain't cheap.

From the look at the weeks ahead it seems like shit is going to get real!

All the scenes with the reverend were so intense; I'm glad they are showing him to be more of an annoyance in the background. Him getting robbed at the casino and missing the deadline was kinda predictable, but still very well done.

So messed up that he got knocked out trying to the GRs, only to lose his church to them.

ultimately the GR reveals probably won't be entertaining, neither will the magical negro.

However, this was gold, felt like a perfect episode of the Twilight Zone

She's pregnant with Holy Wayne's baby

>She also has a power and isn't allowed to touch people

No power, but she's naive and telling too much of her business and causing trouble.

>...also has true dreams? Therefore the white body bags?

That I'm not clear on it could be a sign or a coincidence. Also technically not body bags. Those we're silicone real dolls of the departed. They talked about those last episode.

That really pissed me off because the GR's are now turning into emotional terrorists. That's some real troll ass shit to break into people's homes during Christmas time no less and steal folks pictures of their loved ones. It's one thing to stand on a corner and smoke and stare but to actively fuck with folks that are hurting on some your life doesn't matter shit is fucked up and I'm not surprised they will be hunted down in the coming episodes.

Last night's episode was dope and moving as shit.

Just when they had me like fuck those trolling ass GR's and I don't give a fuck what happens to them. I was about to cry when Glady's was being stoned that was fucking awful and when she started speaking and begging my heart almost broke. That last stone made me jump and I don't get like that easily.

I told y'all that Dean (the dog shooter) was real. Maybe they did it on purpose but that reveal was loud and clear. Not only did the 50 GR's see him, but just to be sure they had the police detain him, and the whole town see him and react to him too. Also revealing why nobody didn't know who he was before and his truck. He didn't live there originally he moved there.

I think Matt did it. That parable that he spoke to Kevin sure sounded like a confession to me. If not him then someone who's close to his new bible study group.

Lori is fucked up it's sad what she has done to her family and seeing Kevin cry his eyes out is heartbreaking. You can tell that he's doing the best he can.

By the way I don't know why it wasn't clear in the second episode because I saw it. But his kitchen is still damaged from whatever animal busted it up. The shots just lingered a bit longer.

A lot of people who criticize this show and claim it doesn't give any answers probably don't pay attention because everything is right there on the screen. I always knew Dean was real based on the first episode when we saw him interact with the bartender on camera. They cleary showed Kevin's kitchen still fucked up in episode but yet folks not too much on here but in other forums and podcasts rant about not seeing any answers and it being ambiguous. It's all there.

yeah...last night's episode was moving indeed. That opening scene was just brutal. I have no idea who was behind that attack. maybe a group we haven't been introduced to yet. It could be Matt but I don't think the few followers he has would go on an attack like that.

I really, really need an episode dedicated to why Laurie joined the GR. I got hyped when she walked out to join Matt. I thought she was about to go home to her fam. but no...she showed Patty that she was a true O.G. (Original Guilty) and screamed (whistled) on him.

Curious to see what becomes of Holy Wayne.

For me the jury is out
They seem to be taking the GRRM approach and staying light on the supernatural stuff
Interesting to do since to date the only thing
Which is admittedly huge and we are witnessing the lingering effects
Is the disappearance of all those people
But there seems to be no other signs of other supernatural events
I'm not willing to rule it out though

I think Wayne just has the great power of persuasion but in a post-departure world it's easier for people to be "healed" by him because people are in a lot of pain and he knows how to get them to let go of their pain. And as we saw in the intro, Nora is in A LOT of pain and is desperately searching for a way to end it. Speaking of the intro, I was really hoping that we were going to see some nice lesbian action but nope

I like that we got to see a glimpse of the world outside of Mapleton. Seeing those activists in NY demanding answers from W.H.O. kinda made the story more real to me. we know that the departure affected the whole world but I think this is the first time actually seeing how people outside of Mapleton are reacting to the it.

Knowing what to tell a person in pain can only go so far, and there are hints of other elements of his "power" as well... like prescience in the form of seeing his own death, or knowing that Christine is "the one". In a show based on a supernatural premise, I'm willing to explore extensions of that.

Solid episode overall though. First one all season where I wasn't rolling my eyes at something.

another solid episode. Carrie Coon could get it.

The storyline with Wayne's cult seems out of place. We know that Kevin's stepson is in the cult and that Nora got the John Coffey hug from Wayne but there's really not much connecting it to the main story in Mapleton. Hopefully we'll see it all tie together by the end of the season.

This was another GREAT one, finally with some answers regarding the GR (somewhat, still quite a bit going on there obviously) and some great twists. Their ultimate plan that I see coming is going to be something to see. I'm really liking this show.

Yeah...this show is my shit!

Glad that we got some insight on the G.R. Patti said that they don't answer to anybody so was she the one running the whole thing and if so, who's gonna run shit now?

R.I.P. Patti...deaths on this show are fuckin' brutal! I thought she was about to attack ol' Kevin but nope...she took that shard straight to her own neck.

I didn't see the Tyler Durden-esque arc for Kevin coming. I knew he was blacking out but didn't think he'd beat/kidnap somebody during a blackout spell. I thought it was gonna be revealed that he was the one that organized Gladys' stoning. Why the fuck would Gladys agree to a brutal death like that? I'd be like "yo, Patti...I'll go out like a true O.G.R. but can you just Walter White one of my cigarettes or something? we don't need to bring boulders into this" LOL!

I really hope Jill joins the G.R. so we don't have to hear her talk anymore. I hate her almost as much as I hated Kim Bauer.

So his wife could step up
Which made me mad
This means she knows all of it
Probably was involved in killing Gladys
And they are about to do so e sick shit even without patti
Nicely set up for us to redirect our disgust to her

Interesting will be her daughters reaction
Who has conflicting reactions to group think as already shown
And the newest still too vocal member

Nice to get a better understanding of exactly what was happening in their lives at the time of the Departure. Makes me have even more sympathy for my homegirl Nora.

Interesting to see how some of the characters kinda "wished" away the people that were causing them stress and got exactly what they asked for.

It was dope to see everyday life in Mapleton Pre-Departure. there isn't even a glimpse of that life now. Shouts out to Nerdy Jill. I like her much better than Emo Jill. LOL!

Alot to analyze from this episode. gonna watch it again tonight

for example that Laurie was Patti's therapist
which makes me like 0_o

that she still followed her after because she still sounded nutty as a fruitcake to the husband after the rapture (and i presume to the rest of us) let alone before but losing that baby must have affected Laurie deeply

and now i'm worried about the GR because with the zaniness before and patti as leader was nuts i cant imagine with a semi sane person Laurie who knows how to mess with folks heads

I was captivated by every scene and at the end I damn near cried. It really hit home to how an event like that would really fuck with your head and profoundly change your worldview.

I know a lot of people gave up on this show early on and didn't give it a fair chance because of their baggage with Damon Lindelof and folk demanding "answers" from the pilot but I always thought that this would be a great series and last night proved it.

having it come so late caused a lot of frustration Im sure as there has been a lot of criticism of the show for it being stagnation of grief/negative...

it actually made the timeline pay off much more and have more emotional hit then if they had that earlier or even the beginning

this was some shit

was a great move.

It really put things in a clearer perspective of these guy's worldview and also really moved you because we're invested in the characters.

If this came out as the 2nd episode, it wouldn't have had as much punch.

I don't like people playing on my phone? Like ya'll just going to let that slip by?

This was an outstanding episode by the way. It was as others have said masterful. There really was the feeling that certain people were given the ability to just blink away their stress and the people who were making their lives more difficult at THAT exact moment. So crazy.

The perspective gained from this episode was a game changer.

Like everyone else said, this episode really tied everything together.
I've been wondering this whole time how GR got started, and how Patti was its leader. It's clear now why. And I loved how they showed Tommy so close with everyone in his family; his self-exile seems even more significant now.

That deer was some shit though. It kinda makes sense now why they (and Kevin) seemed to just gloss over it showing up and mashing in Kevin's kitchen, since he's experienced it before. Guess it's more than one then? Or Crazy Deer re-manifested itself after the first one died?

And at this point, I'm guessing Magic Wayne detected a disturbance in the force just like Patti did... except he came up with another way of dealing with it. Philosophically, it seems like his ranch and the GR are diametrically opposed.

Lotta questions answered, and even more pop up. Really hoping for a "post-Departure aftermath" episode next season showing the moments that led the characters to their spots in the pilot.

One thing that seemed off though was Kevin and Laurie's relationship. It was clear something was bothering her, and I assumed it was knowledge of Kevin's infidelity (which didn't happen until right before the Departure). There were moments of tension here and there mixed with moments of tenderness but nothing significantly terrible stood out to me to the point where Patti could comment on it. I'm hoping they provide more exposition on their relationship later.

Other than that minor confusion, really great episode all around. Might give the season a rewatch after the finale.

Would make sense why it would drive him to cheat on her in the moment

However, not sure if that explains why he's been so secretive around her with the smoking and whatnot... that conversation in the kitchen felt like there have been other times he's lied to her/kept secrets from her.

Either way though, I think you're on to something

So the scene where he's sitting on the road in his white t-shirt/light sweats and smoking a cigarette and a car pulls up next to him and says "are you ready?" or some shit, and then they realize he's not who they think he is and say "nevermind" and roll on....

that was some GR thinking Kevin was one of them, right? I thought that was obvious, but my gf said she didnt realize that but that in hindsight I'm right...

and does that mean/imply that the GR knew what was coming? We already knew there were GR before the event from the NatGeo pop-pop was looking for.

That was my first "Lost" moment I've had with this show. Like "fuck, lindelof! you tease!"

what an intriguing bummer this show is. I coudn't get enough.

That sequence with Gladys being stoned was masterful. I fucking hated her old trolling ass, and was actively cheering the rocks hitting her face, then felt completely terrible for her by the time it was over. i think Patti just told Kev that it was them just to fuck with him.

Norah, and the rev are probably my favorite characters. Absolutely loved their respective episodes.

I'm not convinced Wayne has any actual power other than being a really good con artist.

Kevin didn't really fuck with Aimee, right? I felt like she just told Jill that because she was pissed that she asked. There's some clear tension there though, and it's not just on Aimee's part. And he told her something, or at least put it out there a little when she was taping up his hand, but i don't think it actually went down though.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes to me was Laurie dumping that lighter down the drain (even tho she went back). Even with everything we saw in the flashback episode, I don't empathize with her one bit.

so it seems that the GR's Memorial day thing is that they used the pictures and clothes they stole from houses to make fake bodies (like the guy from the convention), and put them on peoples lawns or some shit? it makes me hope they all get stoned to death.

There was some odd tension here and there initially, but once Kevin found Nora that "spark" (if it could even be called that) disappeared.

And agreed, I think Aimee just said that something happened because she was so offended that Jane would even consider it.

Aimee seemed more happy for Kevin than showing any kind of jealousy.. The hand bandage thing happened after Nora though, so we don't know what happened or was said there.

I just got finished reading the book. I wanted to read it to see if could get an idea of where the story might be going but there are a lot of differences between the show and the book to try to figure anything out. I like the tv show better than the book. The development of the characters on the show is a lot more interesting. The show is a lot darker, also. The only thing I like better about the book is that Jill isn't as emo. she and her dad actually have somewhat of a normal relationship.

Not sure id look forward to next year without her

It took its time getting good, butThe last two episodes were great, very good finale. Just not sure what more they can do with it. I think another season is all they should go for. This concept just isn't made for a 5 season run

Nora was already in the picture, but at least Tom is back and that might help bring Laurie back. Plus, he almost lost Jill and didn't realize it.

Of course, all these things were set in motion anyway and the wish didn't matter. I wonder if Kevin, Nora and Tom will share notes on Wayne and he made them believers.

Seemed to me he just left the baby and went back on the road. If he came back to stay I don't think he would leave the baby unattended on the porch.

Great point about the Wayne connections, I'd love to see them piece that together next season.

> 'The Leftovers' Director Unravels Finale Mysteries
11:00 AM PDT 9/9/2014 by Austin Siegemund-Broka

What's with the Garveys' new dog?

(Warning: This story contains spoilers from this Sunday's The Leftovers season finale, "The Prodigal Son Returns.")

Tensions exploded between the citizens of Mapleton and the Guilty Remnant on Sunday's first season finale of The Leftovers.

The episode is the third directorial effort of the series for Mimi Leder, who shot one of the show's most shocking installments — the stoning murder of Gladys (Marceline Hugot) — and the introduction of Garvey Sr. (Scott Glenn) and his National Geographic magazine, a storyline on which the finale touched in Garvey's (Justin Theroux) fascinating dream sequence.

It had its fair share of metaphysical and character-driven questions: What was Garvey's wish,
and did Holy Wayne (Paterson Joseph) truly grant it? How did Laurie (Amy Brenneman) and Tom (Chris Zylka) happen to end up in the same park? What's the effect of the Bible verse on Garvey and the baby on Nora (Carrie Coon)? What's with the dog?

Leder has answers (except when it comes to the dog; she says, "you just have to read into it yourself what you bring to it"). But she says her finale's themes are those that run throughout the entire first run of the ambitious HBO drama, which will return for a second season. "I think there's a common thread of anger, despair, grief, loss — of, is there hope for humanity?" she tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The director explains her episodes and discusses the season with THR.

HR: What was hardest to get right in the finale?

ML: One of the scenes that was so very hard to achieve, especially because it was shot in two days, was the burning down of the cul-de-sac of the GR's houses. It was an intense, difficult scene to shoot. We're not an action show, so my approach to it was to try to get into the head of Kevin Garvey — to follow him on this journey of seeing what has happened to his town, seeing it through his eyes. He's discovering that the GR has done the unthinkable, has made them remember, after he's gone through quite a confession himself.

That was a very difficult sequence to shoot. It had a lot of visuals and effects, like the fire. It was very emotional, seeing the bodies being thrown on the bonfire and Laurie being thrown out of the house, hearing her voice for the first time in all the episodes except for the flashback.

HR: Were there scenes you thought would be difficult but that came together very naturally?

ML: One of the scenes I feared the most was Nora Durst discovering her family and how that would work, and after the first take, we all just fell apart because it was just so painful to witness and so pure and honest a scream. We took the sound out of it, which made it even more difficult to watch. Just as you think that she's recovering and moving on, you realize that you can never move on, as Holy Wayne says in episode 6 ... "will I forget them?" and he says, "never." And the Guilty Remnant will never let them forget. For Carrie Coon, who is a great discovery and a deeply affecting actress, she went there. She went to the floor literally in seeing her Loved Ones.

Another that was difficult was Justin Theroux's reading of the Bible, in an extraordinarily brilliant performance that went so deep. It was just difficult to modulate not that performance, but the whole episode. You have that scene where he’s deeply affected by the words, and Matt Jamison (Christopher Eccleston) has definitely helped him in the reading of those words. But how far do you go with the tears, when you know you have a scene coming up where he confesses to Matt that he wanted his family gone?

The scene with Wayne was quite beautiful and quite powerful, and we wanted to do it very simply. There was the coincidence of Holy Wayne being in that bathroom, having had a huge effect on Kevin's son's life, and granting Kevin the wish that ultimately comes true, perhaps, in the last moments of the show.

HR: What was he wishing for?

ML: What I told Justin was that he was wishing for a new beginning, a rebirth, to start over. In that moment, when Nora comes to the doorstep to leave the note and leave him and leave Mapleton, leave everything behind, she finds this baby. All she says is, "look what I found," and you can see that in the midst of all this anger, grief, uncertainty and loss, there's hope.
There's the possibility of love, the possibility of a new family.

HR: How do Laurie and Tom figure into this new beginning?

ML: In the show's arc, (creators) Damon (Lindelof) and Tom (Perrotta) so brilliantly crafted a closeness between Laurie and Tom. Laurie and Tom were both drawn to cults, they both sought out answers. I think Laurie is at this point very disillusioned by everything she thought she believed in, and Tom in his arc during the series has been disillusioned by Holy Wayne, feeling that perhaps he is the fraud that Wayne himself feels he is. (But perhaps in his moment of death Holy Wayne is not a fraud; perhaps the wish he granted Kevin will come true. We don't know — we'll see.) Their stories are about what we as human beings have the ability to believe in, how deeply we believe things can come true if we will them to.

Laurie and Tom have a very special connection. Kevin married her, fell in love with her and raised Tom as his son, but Laurie and Tom have a special connection. Where she goes at the end is where it all began in the pilot: the memorial park. It was another coincidence — how does he show up and find his mother? I said to him and to her, this is the place where you guys would meet. This is the place where your mom would take you. This was their place. So just when she thinks all is lost, she looks into the water, into the abyss, she turns and sees her son.

He's delivered the baby to Kevin's doorstep, because he was abandoned by his father and Kevin took care of him. He took the baby to the only place he knew the baby would be taken care of.

HR: So in the aftermath of the burning of the GR, Laurie's disillusioned with the group?

ML: In the aftermath, when Laurie is looking at her family again — I was reading some reviews about it, and people thought it was Kevin wanting her back. But it wasn't. It was a moment about, "don't come near us." It was a moment about, "you've hurt us so much."

She's disillusioned and feels the shame of having put her daughter in jeopardy. One of the scenes that was most interesting and most difficult in many ways was the sequence in the house where her daughter (Margaret Qualley) is there and her daughter says, "talk," and she says not, "go away, go home, it's dangerous." She wants to protect her daughter, but she wants to carry out what she has been planning with her group for all these months. The conflict of being the mother and that instinct coming out was a great challenge to her.

HR: Where does this episode leave the GR, in particular Liv Tyler's character Meg?

ML: Liv Tyler has just been an extraordinary force. People see Liv as this very fragile kind of waif, and she's really this strong, tough, powerful woman. I loved shooting her coming out of the house, taking over Patti's (Ann Dowd) role as the leader and filling those shoes.

The GR will never let anyone forget what happened — you can go on with your lives, but you can never move on. They're the realists. So are they a cult, really? It made a lot of sense in many ways. They'd rather live in reality than in denial.

HR: You directed the series' other most devastating moment of violence against the cult, the stoning of Gladys. How did you go shoot that scene?

ML: When I read it, I thought, "Oh my god, how am I going to shoot a stoning? How am I going to do one of the show's most shocking scenes?"

I wanted everything to be very still before they abduct her, and then I wanted everything to be so wild that you could barely see, just the struggling of being dragged through the woods and tied up and having this vow of silence. I shot it very simply in terms of camera angles. Once we got there, we needed to be still so that we could feel the effects of the stones hitting her face and destroying her life and the tragedy of her begging for her life even though she martyred herself. It was a very powerful thing to shoot, very frightening to shoot.

HR: In your episode centered on Kevin's father, what's your sense of the elder Garvey's mental state? Is he crazy?

ML: My interpretation is that he is hearing voices and that he's not crazy. I think he snapped after the departure, the voices really do come and talk to him. That's why I did the shot of his reflection in the window — who's he talking to? He's definitely talking to somebody. He definitely hears the voices, the voices are telling him what's important, and he tells his son to listen. This is Damon's brilliant crafting — in episode nine, we go back and we see Garvey Sr. tell his son, "this is it. This is your purpose in life. You need to accept it. There isn't any more than this." In that moment, your mind will hopefully go back to this episode seven. It's part of Kevin's arc, finding out what is his purpose in this life.

HR: Has he found it?

ML: I think he's still discovering it. I think he's just, in this finale, confessing to what happened at the moment of departure and what he was wishing for. He was wanting his family gone, and he feels the guilt. He is still looking for his purpose.

This show hooked me from the start. I went in apprehensive when I heard that the people who made Lost were involved.Never got into Lost, tried many times; couldn't get the appeal.

This one has a refreshing theme; it's kinda emo; it's not for everybody but it raises questions that I wish we heard more about. Loss, how to survive after losing loved ones, Is forgetting and acting like it never happened the way to keep on going, or not allowing ourselves to forget and dedicate ourselves to their memory?

Justin Theroux is awesome in it for me.Kevin is not necessarily likeable but we easily empathize with him as we see that World through mostly his eyes. I love how a lot of what he sees has us questioning if it's real.Is Dean real? What's the story with the dogs? What's the deal between him and Aimee? Is the national Geographic mag real?

I agree that Nora and Matt are the most interesting character on the show, along with Patty and I wish Aimee had more to do, her banter with the twins and how uneasy she makes Kevin always makes me laugh, Glenn Scott steals every scene he's in.

My favorite cameo was Alvin from the Cosby Show asking Tom if he needs help before punk ass Christine gets the vapors. And the intro from the finale with Nina Simone doing Ne Me Quittes pas ( My favorite song of all time)was amazing.

Can't wait for season 2.

Both grim and hopeful at the same time. I really dig the positive change in tone as the season has gone on and I'm someone that typically prefers "the darkest timeline".

I'm thinking GR as we know it is done, but Meg is gonna continue its principles in some form or fashion.

And it does feel like Holy Wayne does have a mystical element with him, although at this point I doubt if they ever explicitly explain it. Not that that's a bad thing... I'm willing to give the show the benefit of the doubt in not having to explain every little thing.

First of all. ELVIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Second of all...That was one of the most depressing and creepiest hours of television.

My heart broke when Nora saw the replicas of her family in the kitchen. That was just some sick shit!

What was even sicker was Patti getting on Kevin's lap. Ewwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matt is a true friend

Is Wayne a fraud?

What do you think Kevin wished for? I think he just wished to keep his family safe.

Justin Theroux is a pretty damn good actor.

I thought for a second that Jill was gonna die and I started to feel bad for hating her all this time. Like for real, on some..."Stay up, Jill! Don't die, Jill!"

Can't wait to see what they do next season because...

BOOK SPOILERS!

it will be all original storylines so it'll be interesting to see where they go with the characters. the way the finale ended was pretty much the same in the book with Nora writing the letter and finding the baby on Kevin's porch as she was about to deliver the letter. even the last line in the book was the same with Nora saying "Look what I found." Her character wasn't nearly as unstable as she is on the show. She didn't do anything as drastic as hiring hookers to shoot her.

The G.R. didn't do anything like in the finale though they did do some odd stuff. Patti wasn't as prominent as she is on the show. The G.R. storyline focused more on Meg and Laurie's bond as mentor/student.

No mysteries were really brought up or solved. It seemed like the story was just about the characters finding a way to move on. With the G.R. out of Mapleton, I don't see where the tension will come from but I'm sure Lindeloff will come up with something interesting.

So if the GR didn't do anything as drastic as in the show, how did the climax in the book go?

And is Wayne's "power" as ambiguous in the book as in the show?

220. "Climax of the Book (SPOILERS, obviously)"

>And is Wayne's "power" as ambiguous in the book as in the
>show?

Wayne is pretty much in the background for most of the book, mostly seen in flashbacks with Tom. In the book, there aren't any violent shoot-outs with the ATF or the government or anything, but Wayne does get arrested early on. Tom takes the pregnant Christine around the country to a safe-house where she can safely have the kid, but then Wayne takes a plea deal with the government and admits publically to being a fraud. That gets Tom and Christine kicked out of the safe house, and sends Christine into serious depression. The rest of it is similar to the show. Christine runs off, and Tom takes the baby back to Mapleton and leaves it on his father's doorstep. He doesn't stick around though, it's implied that he's going to go off to look for Christine.

>So if the GR didn't do anything as drastic as in the show,
>how did the climax in the book go?

There's not really an action-based climax. The GR tells Laurie that they want her to shoot and kill Meg; like the show, another member of the GR had been killed earlier in the book, but it was a shooting, rather than a stoning. Meg tries to shoot Meg, but relents at the last second, so Meg shoots herself instead. Laurie is then immediately driven out of town by other GR members to perpetuate the mystery.

Jill never actually joins the GR. At the end, she's on her way over to central house to join, but runs into the twins and changes her mind and decides to play ping-pong with them instead.

Thanks for breaking that all down. It sounds like some of the show departures were extremely effective then... the stoning in particular seems like an especially inspired departure. I thought it was poignant how Gladys broke her vow of silence in her moment of distress, similar to how Laurie did when Jill was in danger.

And so if Wayne publically declared he's a fraud, I'm presuming the rest of the book takes a more "grounded" approach to the story? Or is an unexplained supernatural element (the deer, Nat Geo, Kevin's Dad's voices, "The One", etc.) still present?

Yes, that's true. The Deer, the crazy dogs, Dean, the issue of Nat Geo, the voices, things disappearing, "The One," are all inventions of the TV show. When they do talk about Tom first meeting Wayne, he recalls that he actually did "feel" something when Wayne hugged him, but it's left ambiguous whether or not he's magical or not. There's not even a suggestion that there even may be answers out there as to what happened. Everything is people trying to cope.

Also bear in mind, that Kevin's father is also a complete invention of the show; in the book, Kevin is the mayor, not the police chief, and his father isn't around. There's also a vague mention of a guy from the town running around shooting stray dogs, but it's more shown as the guy is a pain in the ass shooting dogs who's owners have "disappeared."

Looks like they were expecting (hoping) the show would get extended past the first season, so the supernatural elements help open up future storylines.

I never watched Lost myself, so here's hoping the showrunners know where they're going now that they're exploring past the known blueprint.
