Rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. With BJ Britt
Trip returns to the fold in the second season premiere of 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' this Tuesday!
When BJ Britt first joined the cast of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” as Agent Antoine Triplett, he worked under Agent John Garrett, completely unaware that his superior was actually the villainous Clairvoyant.
Now, after helping take Garrett down, Trip has decided to stay on with Director Coulson as he sets out to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. from the ashes in the series’ upcoming second season.
Britt spoke with Marvel.com ahead of the season premiere this Tuesday at its new time, 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC, to explain why Trip made the decision to stick around,
Marvel.com: When you first got the role of Trip last season, did you think that would eventually become something where you’d be able to come back this year?
BJ Britt: No, actually. Even now it’s still amazing to me, even to this day.
Marvel.com: Going into this new season, it’s obvious Trip stuck around with Coulson and his team. What do you think it was that made it want to be a part of him and a part of rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. under Coulson?
BJ Britt: Trip’s a really good guy, but Trip likes to make sure everything is in order and he likes to make sure that everything is going smoothly. Last season, when they found out Garrett was Hydra, a lot of people thought that Trip maybe could have been Hydra as well. The fact that he’s sticking around and he’s proven himself to be a worthy advocate for S.H.I.E.L.D., the people and the fans are loving that aspect of him. He’s going make sure that stuff doesn’t go wrong. He’s one of the good guys. Trip has that charm as well, which is one of those things that I liked that the writers brought to his character. He has a sense of humor and a charm about him. Something that’s likeable about him, you know? You can see that in certain scenes where he flashes that smile, but if something goes wrong, hey, all right, I can kick your butt and go.
I really didn’t know anything about Marvel up until I showed up on set--my agent Joe was always telling me to go watch Marvel movies with him, like Captain America or Thor, and I was like, “Nah, I’m good.” Because my parents never let me watch anything that was violent growing up, so I didn’t get a chance to jump on the bandwagon of the comic books and all the different characters and everything. Once I auditioned for it and I booked it, my agent was like, “Hey, you booked Marvel. You booked ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’” I started doing my homework. When I had to go watch all the Marvel movies in order, I’m like, “Oh my god, are you freaking kidding me?” I’m calling my mom telling her, “I’m so mad at you for not putting me on to this way earlier than now.” I’m showing up to set as a big fan. I’m showing up to set as a fan of Trip, and just to come into an already huge hit because Marvel’s just huge! Being able to interact with some of the characters and having a good time with it, I’m pinching myself everyday.
Jeff , the producer, was telling me how much he enjoys Trip and the interaction between the characters, and I was like, “I enjoy playing Tripp just as much as you love watching him.” Seriously. It’s phenomenal. It’s a lot of fun.
Marvel.com: Last season we saw a little bit of flirtation between Trip and Simmons. As a fan, would you want to see those two characters get together at some point?
BJ Britt: As a fan, I would love to see that happen. Elizabeth is a sweetheart, everybody in the show is just so awesome. But the thing is never let you know what’s going to happen until you show up for the read through for the next episode. So you’re like, “Are they going to elaborate on this?” It’s so funny between the characters, especially with the fanbase, because some people are like, “TripSimmons, we love that!” And then other people are like, “Hell no! FitzSimmons. We want FitzSimmons! Forget Trip! I love Trip but it’s FitzSimmons, not TripSimmons.” It’s going to be interesting how it plays out in the second season. It’ll definitely be interesting.
Marvel.com: Since you’ve had at least half a season’s experience playing the character now in the first season, where are you interested in taking Trip this year, and how would you like to see his character evolve?
BJ Britt: That’s a good one. I would to continue to see him just be pro-S.H.I.E.L.D. because like I said, you never know, you show up for a table reading, next thing I know, I’m Hydra! You never know! I love the fact that he’s working with the team. Even now I still feel like Trip has something to prove. That’s going to cross over to the second season where Trip wants to show Coulson that he can trust him. It’s hard to get Director Coulson’s trust. And Trip, knowing that, I think every episode he needs to prove, “Hey, I can do this. You need the airbus fixed? I can do that." Trip’s a man of different trades, not only can he get the girl, he can fix the airbus and he can fly it! All of the above! Tripp can kick your butt too. I mean, you name it, it’s on Trip’s resume. I just want Trip to continue to build on his resume and continue to fight for S.H.I.E.L.D. We’re the good guys. Like I said in one of the previous episodes, “We won once. We’ll do it again.” Good guys won before, we’ll do it again. I like that idea, I like it a lot.
Catch the season premiere of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Tuesday, September 23 at its new time, 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC, and stay tuned to Marvel.com for the latest on your favorite agents!
