They can really focus on character and story development and not making the show reliant on references to other superheroes, cameos and tie-ins to the Avengers.

Then people will be even more excited on the rare occasion that there is a cameo thrown in.

call me cheesy, but they had me right there. the possibilities are really endless with this show. if you know the comics SHIELD has so much going on that doesn't even need to involve too many costumed heroes. just the sheer amount of agents they can introduce is staggering. tying in stuff from the Avengers (Chitari artifacts) and other MU movies (Extremis, SS Serum, etc) is a good touch in my opinion. i can see this being a little bit like Fringe every week. curious to see if the adversary is going to be AIM or HYDRA (or maybe some mixture of both). i'm looking forward to it.

they totally can go so many areas...

but will they?

shout out to ABC for putting together one of the most dull castings ever.

Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, and Chloe Bennet (Skye) were the only characters who stood out to me and ones I'd probably care about.

the others were so interchangeable and dull I was struggling to remember who they were after the episode ended.

but, i'm cautiously in...though I won't be watching this LIVE every week.

I'm going to need to see where Jed Whedon and Mo Tanchoren (sp?) go with this. They won't have Joss to fall back on for snappy dialogue and witty writing from here on out (y'all know the network brought Joss in to fix the writing on the scripts because they weren't impressed with what they were seeing...that never sounds good).

Plus, I want to see who THEY are as writers....

I'm really starting to think network tv is where sci-fi goes to die.

The characters all seem cut from the BuffyGang mold and none of them stood out. Casting J. August Richards as the 'down and out brother with no work' made it even worse.

The action is 'eh', the plot is dry and the art design seems mad generic.

I'll stay....for a while. But not long.

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.

im sorry but Coulson's entrance from that dark corner, and him pointing it out (due to missing bulb), had me LMBO. Lola's transformation at the end reminded me of the start of BTTFII, i dunno bout yall, but BIG TIME BTTFII vibes right there lol.

J. August Richards has been one of the coolest dudes since ANGEL, man. big big fan of his work on that show (its my co-fav show of all times). seein him on tv again, on a Whedon-related thing no less, is frickn uhsum. even despite that massive fan bias, i thought he knocked it out the park with his performance. really drove home the point of the show, highlighting the massive gulf that now exists b/w the regular dudes and the gods, monsters and superbeings. for a sec there i was REALLY hoping he had actual powers, but then again im kinda glad they didnt go that route and make it too "Heroes"y. him gettn hit in the head was such a fake-out, first u think he's been killed, then everyone starts smiling at each other in slo mo (n wifey's like "...why are they all smiling? cos they shot that black guy in the head?"), then u see the gun and u remember the special bullet n then moments later its confirmed he's allgood lol.

that whole opening scene is badass, btw. kind of bittersweetly represents what Angel season 6 woulda looked like for J (Gunn woulda been vamped up & superpowered).

this Coulson in Tahiti thing should play out interestingly. im not gonna go with the life model decoy (is that wat its calld?) theory, i think he's telling the truth in that he DID die momentarily, but he was lied to about exactly how Fury and the team went about getting him better. i know absolutely nothing about the pre-established comic universe so im goin into this blind (minus the MCU films, of course), but im assuming at this point they did somethin to him thats maybe not all that great, but did it to keep him alive.

i'll shuttup now.

Mae's sketchy backstory. RON GLASS (Firefly fan ova here). heaps of continuity with the MCU. they did a lot in the pilot.

it was pretty straight forward setting-up-the-ongoing-arc-and-standalone-story stuff (which the J. August story helped illustrate, and how they're both connected in that there's an individual story to tell, and then that individual should hopefully become part of the larger story).

it delivered everything i needed it to. exactly what kinda epic expectations did u have after only one episode of this show? if the Whedonverse architects output is anything to go by (Jed and Mo included), they love the longform storytelling. cos they're awesome at it. which means if i gotta get a 'not great but good' pilot instead of a stellar one just so it could setup stuff that's guna pay off down the track, then so be it. i gots faith. and even if it wasnt the absolute best it could be, i was pretty frickn entertained.

butyes, the extent of the negative feedback IS surprising, considering it seemed like this entire board was excited as shit whilst waiting for it.

people are giving their opinions and many didn't care for the first episode and everyone or mostly everyone gave their reasons for why they didn't like it: bland characters, questionable set up, etc.

i don't see why that's such an issue for you to comprehend.

You do realize this show isn't written just for fans of the comics it's written for a mass audience...the show has to appeal to EVERYONE.

Not everyone across the board liked it. And this need to assume and believe everyone did is faulty.

and people here were excited for it. Then they saw it. Posters acknowledging they thought it was okay and are hoping for it to improve isn't critical..it's being objective.

you are sure you need a few more eps to get on board.

straightforward or not, if a person isn't impressed, they aren't impressed and may need more eps to get on board.

it seems like you're more shocked that people didn't like it because they don't have the same attachment to it that you do. that's okay.

but, this "shock" and "awe" at folk not being as impressed with it as you and people, not just here, but critics and many fans are expressing that though it was okay, it's clear there's a lot of room for improvement and people are on board *BUT* they need to see how the next eps unfold...

um, welcome to the american viewing audience.

I mean, i think my post was pretty direct about how I felt. And I was hoping to be wowed.

For all the promotion for this which has been going on for *MOST* of this year to see what they came up with...I wasn't impressed.

I'll keep watching because i'm curious to see how they improve.

but, this need to essentially peg folk who aren't wowed by the first episode as "going in way too hard" or being "overly critical" when in fact many of us aren't is extra as hell and kinda faulty.

but, i'm standing by my opinions. if it improves i'm on board to see where they go with this.

if it doesn't, I will bail. plain and simple.

i guess u came off the most vocal about ur disappointment in this poast, but im cool with ur stance. i fully admit i'm blinded by the fanboy light on this one, it's gonna be hard for me to be let down. spesh if they keep casting past Whedonverse regulars. i get geeked just seeing em all on screen again. perhaps my lack of involvement in the comics side of tings shields me (hah, im funny, and did not know it) from other potential disappointments.

i will say in terms of overall Whedon-related pilots, it's probly one of the weakest ("Angel" wins as one of the best, btw). but i had hecka fun. it'll only get better with time, in that i do trust.

I mean, you guys were expecting the greatest thing ever? It was good, Clark Gregg has Coulson down, rest of the cast was good, if a little typical, but it's just the first episode. I'm more interested in what really happened to Coulson, and what Skye's real name is (perhaps... Jessica Jones??). I'm going to play ball.

please. it wasn't that good either.

um, if ABC is hyping this up to be *THEIR* show for the season with all this press and promotion, people WERE expecting them to come hard.

They didn't. at all.

its just the first episode for a show that for all the hype and hubub, didn't fully deliver.

will it get better? I would hope so.

But, the first episode was quite bland and safe.

And for all this promotion, ABC should have given the SHIELD writers enough of a ball park to go in and go hard.

yea 12.1 million viewers on ABC is great...but stacked up against CBS? it sucks.

and ultimately, S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to have to do WAY MORE if they intend on competing with the NCIS juggernaut.

but y'all keep acting like this is some brilliance when it's not.

and to say we were expecting the greatest thing ever is such a backhand.

It's clear none of us were. But to say that and see the fact that folk weren't impressed and gave viable reasons why?

smh

no i'm giving my opinion of what I saw. and i'm hardly going hard at all.

there are people in this post who are way more harsh than I am.

and here some more reviews: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/agents-shield-tv-review-632539

http://screenrant.com/agents-of-shield-reviews-ratings-characters-discussion/

most of the reviews given here have praised the pilot or not, but all agree that it can still be improved on.

to assume I have a bad day beacuse I watched the pilot, didn't like it, but am more than willing to see where it goes because it is a new show and they have to introduce characters and set up the show, but doing it with bland characters is silly.

but, hey, i'm totally having a rough day. *sarcasm face*

no i'm not. i'm always prickly and stank at 8:40 am EST in the morning on the tail near the end of working a 12 hour shift at a law firm...catch up, shock!

but i think there is a LOT of potential for the show to mature into something really good.

BUT, let's not act like this shit was banging and "the best pilot ever shown" which is what i'm getting from a lot of people in this post who clearly need to dial that down, stop, say the phrases "Breaking Bad", "Lost", "X-Files" five times out loud for great pilots (shit throw in Hannibal since it effectively portrayed the universe it exists in. yasssss )

and to act like this was such a hit? when ratings wise, it's not.

Yea, ABC thinks it's a "hit", though if S.H.I.E.L.D. can't match and/or surpass 12.1 million viewers a week from here on out *AND* manage to beat The Voice (NBC) and NCIS (CBS) in the 18-49 demographic weekly, then the show will be in trouble.

so let's see how Jed and Mo (EP's of the show) develop this show this season (at least for the first 13 eps)...and i'm personally rooting for them because they're both great writers (the two of them co-wrote some of the stronger episodes of Dollhouse, which isn't saying much but it kinda is)

I mean, i'm being as fair as I can. It wasn't shitty, but great? please. not even close.

and this is the exact same set up. It's a brave new world out there with super heroes and super villains. Someone has to protect the new ones from themselves and the rest of the world. Shit they even had the juiced up black guy. There's a lot of room for them to do other things of course, but as far as characters go... nerdy couple have a cute chemistry... could careless about anyone else except maybe what really happened to Colson.

Seriously this is no better than a SyFy show at this point, and would take a hell of a lot of plot and character development to rise in the ranks.

nah, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Agent Coulson and Skye are the standouts on that show. And I totally agree with critics who say that the writers on this show should develop them as main characters and their backstories and minimize the others but have them occasionally be front and center at times.

or do an ensemble around Coulson and May (right now, it's not even that.

but other than that, you are right. As much as I clown, you brought up some damn good points.

So far the only interesting character is Sky and that's because I like quirky (and it's something Whedon can do in his sleep).

If everyone else died in an explosion at the end of the episode I wouldn't care with the exception of the character Ming Na is playing and because I am interested in what makes her afraid of working in the field even tho she apparently kicks ass at it...which is more a future plot point then any real character meat on her bones.

Ill give it a few episodes for the actors and writers to find strengths to play with in their characters but as of now...it could use more charisma.

Marathon'd two episodes in a row after watching three The Bridge episodes in a row. So I needed something light.

It's a great show, really. It's corny at times but that's network TV. The characters I'm definitely a bit meh about.

Why they keep bringing these people onto SHIELD that are gonna take em down? Why'd Coulson just let those rebel folks just walk around the plane like that? How is that Rising Tide chick just gonna get brought on board, knowing she's trying to bring them down or expose them?

Anyway. Plotholes aside, I'm still impressed by it. The Fury cameo was great.

Yeah, we're going to have to kill the fish tank.

i'm out.

i think someone else said it somewhere that they used a villain that's known enough to comic heads but not so known that he'd be needed for any of the movies. they can have him all to themselves for the show.

having said that, dude is pretty powerful in the comics. the times he has shown up, it took the whole Avengers crew to take him down. curious how they're going to work that into the show. i still want to see more HYDRA.

They can't stray too far from the mandated path.

Whedon shows do tend to get better as they go, though. This third episode was already so much better than the first two.

LOL!! I'mma stop with that one.

There was some intrigue left with the last ep, but with old girl and old boy essentially being the lead, the only thing interesting between them is old girls legs in a dress. The motivations of both are just so text book it's like *yawn*. And with old girl borderline unbelievable. They should have trumped up a bunch of charges and forced her to work with them or risk jail. Cause this, Oooooh i was a hacker bringing down the man, but now they got me a cute trainer I think I might be down, shit is meh.

"Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a resolutely okay TV show. Its neither great nor terrible, neither inspired nor boring. This in itself is an accomplishment. SHIELD lets just call it SHIELD, okay? sits at an uneven borderland between a wide variety of corporate realities. Its an unprecedented in-continuity TV spinoff-sequel to the equally unprecedented Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its produced by Marvel Studios and airs on ABC, which are in turn both owned by Disney."

Coulson is a more boring Hal.
Ming Na Wen is the more boring #2/bad ass female ala Gina Torres
Ward is smarter, duller Jayne
FitzSimmons is Kaylee and Wash
Skye is the useless, pretty face like Inara

Skye is a huge issue because it makes no sense that she's there, the "I want to find my parents" idea was groanworthy, and you can't have a key element of your team be a hacker since it makes most of your climatic moments, "CAN SHE TYPE FAST ENOUGH?!"

They also need to stop with the vague mysteries of zero importance. What happened to Coulson? Who cares? Who is Skye's dad? Who cares? What is up with Rising Tide, the group that is so nefarious that you just invited one of their people to decide whether or not she wanted to join S.H.I.E.L.D?
ABC probably deserves some of the blame because I would bet that they wanted more of the standalone episodes early and push the serialized stuff, which has made the Caterpillar stuff less interesting. This episode last probably should have been the second episode because it clearly sets up the bad guys and their goal and gives S.H.I.E.L.D a purpose. Right now, there's no reason for this special unit of S.H.I.E.L.D who seem to just keep flying around for no reason until something pops up.

Things will get going once the main villain become more prevalent but I think the only way they can do to really save the team is to kill off Colston; Ward gets promoted, has Ming Na and Skye trying to direct him on what he should do and make Simmons want to take a bigger role in the field (since she and Fitz are basically the same character right now.)

At this point, I'm tapping out and just reading recaps until it seems like they get thing going. It's just not a good show. It makes me appreciate Arrow more.

and they need more characters (even if just cameos) to pop in. there's too many people associated withe S.H.I.E.L.D. to leave them out. having said that, the show is not that bad. i still think we need to give it some more time.

yes, Arrow is a very awesome show so far. but let's be honest, we're all kinda shocked how good that show is. not to mention it's had more time to establish. and they only have one character doing comedic relief (and she's the smart hacker chick too). but no one was expecting a show about Green Arrow (who was kinda meh on Smallville) to do well. it's kinda excelling because we all had low expectations. S.H.I.E.L.D. is quite the opposite as it's coming in with crazy high expectations.

there wasn't a lot of fanfare when Arrow first started. a lot people didn't even know it was coming out. SHIELD doesn't have that luxury. from the jump it was billed as a follow up to that smash hit movie from last summer. so people where expecting to see a mini TV version of Avengers ... which is is not. if SHIELD has any advantage is that it's going to probably get a longer leash than most shows. hopefully it starts to get better that just average.

nope they can't. this is the show Y'ALL GETTIN.

plain and simple.

Joss is tied up doing Avengers movies and script doctoring their spinoffs (he re-wrote Thor 2, Captain America and did a run on Guardians of the Galaxy allegedly)...

he's cashing them per episode checks as an EP of the show, but he's not in the writing room.

but nope, Joss is too busy with his projects to devote time to this.

but sorry, y'all got Whedon lite. deal with it.

and that means, you're getting a low budget ass version of Joss Whedon.

I gave the show THREE episodes to improve.

I was done.

but some of these folk up here? whining about how "oh if joss ran this, it would be way better"

actually, no it wouldn't. remember what happened when he did network tv shows?

that didn't go well.

plus, a joss whedon show takes episodes to develop the tone, something network/broadcast tv has *NO* time for...

so i doubt Joss would have had a go of it either.

but this show? this show sucks massive ass. And ABC is only keeping JUST to recoup the costs it paid to develop, and put it on the air.

Joss' influence would help TREMENDOUSLY. That we know.

but, the fact that the two showrunners are so GREEN is obvious (yea they worked on Spartacus and Dollhouse as writers but they're still NEW showrunners and their "greenness" shows)

and i don't want you to think I was making the connection that cancelled equal a shitty show. far from it.

Cause Terriers, Chicago Code, Wonderfalls, etc. are all quality shows that were cancelled before they had a chance to grow.

I mean, even Dollhouse, yea it was a hot fucking mess of a show. BUT, there was an interesting idea in the show that, had it been given a change to flourish, could have been really damn good. But it was on a network (FOX) that, up until recently, wasn't know for giving shows time to flourish.

that's changing now but it wasn't always like this.

But A.O.S.? It's just not a decent show. It should have been. But, it's like the writers aren't really utilizing the universe of characters and worlds the show is clearly living in...

I hope they do soon. because the show has potential to be that superhero show THAT WORKS on broadcast/network tv...

I just never got the clear impression Jed and Marissa know how to get to that point yet...or even find their way there.

She spun that good "we don't know what the fuck we're doing and are hoping for the best" web of lies on you lol

That's probably what she's been told to say.

It's clear they're still trying to figure out where they're going. Fine

But they really need to figure that out quickly.

This was a drunken 2:30 AM bar discussion. (And right after she told me some amazingly juicy stories about Castle and why Nathan Fillion is so fucking fat now.) I think she truly believes in the show.

And they've got a whole season left to figure it out. They've still got a bunch more episodes to write/shoot, Whedon is still involved (albeit in limited fashion), and since it's a Top 10 non-sports show for adults ages 18-49, I'm betting it'll get renewed for another season, which gives it even more time to improve.

This Thor crossover is a great opportunity to pick up and keep new viewers if it's well-done. I'm interested to see what happens.

I'm obviously rooting for it, as this type of show is totally my thing (bet your ass I'm writing a spec for it this spring, lol), and I have friends with their hands in the cookie jar.

you better write a solid ass pilot too. I'm just saying from what I've been told from a writing mentor in LA now, get them pilots ready for staffing season.

but honestly, i am going to give it another shot. I struggled early on. But, I think I'm willing to lightweight give it another shot...

Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/11/01/agents-of-shield-thor-2-crossover/

'Agents of SHIELD' doing 'Thor' crossover directed by Jonathan Frakes
By James Hibberd on Nov 1, 2013 at 8:21PM

Its official: Marvels Agents of SHIELD is doing a crossover episode with the upcoming film Thor: The Dark World.

After Dark World is released in theaters Nov. 8, the Nov. 19 episode of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Well, will continue where the film left off. Heres the official description: In the aftermath of the events chronicled in the feature film Marvels Thor: The Dark World, Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pick up the piecesone of which threatens to destroy a member of the team.

The episode is directed by sci-fi TV luminary Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation), who previously directed an episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. co-creator Joss Whedons Dollhouse.

Theres a slew of announced guest stars in the episode, but none from Thor 2 (so no Chris Hemsworth stopping by to wave his hammer at Coulson): Peter MacNicol as Professor Elliot Randolph, Michael Graziadei as Jakob Nystrom, Erin Way as Petra Larsen, Toby Wilson as Neils, Alex Neustaedter as Maynard and Sylvia Brindis as Elena.

If there's one thing I've learned about sci-fi series it's that they'll never meet your expectations so its better not to have them. (the second thing i've learned is right when they get better/good someone pulls the plug but ignore that one for now)

I mean let's be real this isn't any worse than the movies. It's a nice way to fill in the time between movies to help shape the universe.

and shit there's some improement this week. i actually cared about colson for a minute. ftitzsimmons too.

there's nothing mind blowingly awesome wbout it but shit I used to watch Mutant X. This shit is more than good enough. LOL!

it's alot worse than the movies, and there are great Sci-Fi shows out there like Supernatural, Arrow, Continuum, even Orphan Black...

...THIS SHOW CAN DO alot BETTER, AND THEY'RE TRYING, SO I'M TRYING TO STICK WITH IT, BUT IT'S A SLOW, BORING, BURN....

of course that's almost as low as you go but that doesn't make the highs spectacular.

the show you listed are all great plot driven shows with characters that developed well over time. but there's no stellar acting happening on any of them, tons of cheese throughout as well. we let that shit slide.

marvel movies are great action pieces but there's tons of just shitty shitty things from dialog to characters etc. plenty of cheese. there's plenty to make up for it, but let's not pretend that its incredible movie making.

so now they bring the uiverse to the small screen in a primetime format. sacrifice effects, lose the super heroes and introduce a team of haracters that aren't already integraed into the universe while staying on (and expanding) the brand. yeah they doing fine. yall can nitpick as much as you want but this is a decent effort.

But she was especially bad this week. She's supposed to be part of the team now. They got that whole "Are you with us or against us" thing out of the way two episodes ago. How is she gonna hack into the computer systems and then rope British girl into helping her who fired a weapon on a fellow agent? I know you suspend disbelief, especially in a show like this, but they didn't even get a slap on the wrist for their actions. *SMH*

Marvels Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Well
By David Sims
Nov 19, 2013 11PM
Grade D+

Okay, S.H.I.E.L.D. Im at my wits end with you, and I think Ive been very patient so far. Give the show time to breathe! Id argue. It needs a few weeks to flesh everything out, like any Joss Whedon show! Well, Ive had enough. This is the most expensive new show on TV, and its set in the fascinating, fun Marvel Cinematic Universe, full of great characters, 60 years of story ideas, and so on and so forth. This week, we crossed over with Thor: The Dark World, a legitimately awesome romp of a movie that had me spellbound in the theater from start to finish.

show is having some identity issues and has somehow turned into Dawsons Creek...on a plane. cept DC had way more interesting characters. and dialogue.

My guess is that SHIELD will play into the potential dissension in the SHIELD ranks as Captain America 2 gets closer and the Tahiti revelation will cause Coulson to question his allegiance.

Granted, this is based off my skimming the AV Club reviews of the last few episodes since I tapped out a while back.

...it's an adventure show without a real adventure...it lacks balls....i don't really mind that it's cheesy, but to be so cheesy and then give us these bad stories we're supposed to care about is foolhardy....

all that said, I wonder which one of them is Skye's parent, Coulson or Ming na??

They darkened the tone up a bit, which, IMO was all it really needed. I wonder when they're gonna reveal the Colson is a robot and Sky is Agent May's daughter.

Let's just get on w/it.

They purposefully won't reveal her name.

She's a double agent.

She's got the look.

Lack of superheroes and comic book characters thus far makes me think that they got some reveals of some sort for her and Coulson.

They are trying their best (but failing imo) at making her one of the show's focal point characters.

There was a big nerd story about this when it was announced that they both (or rather just Q) would appear in The Avengers: Age of Ultron AND X-Men: Days of Future Past, but different characters and actors. Apparently, the Fox deal is everything to do with X-Men, including the use of the term mutant.

So, for Avengers, they can't reference Magneto or mutants, so I'm assuming they are retconning them to be Inhumans, who are making a big comeback of sorts in the comics right now. And, honestly, Inhumans are very, very similar to mutants anyways.

For X-Men, they are not allowed to mention their affiliation with The Avengers (and presumably more... I think they will both be called the superhero names, but use different real names).

Bill Paxton Joins Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Posted on Monday, January 13th, 2014 by Germain Lussier

Bill Paxton

The fate of the second season of Marvels Agents of SHIELD is still up in the air will there be one? but while the first season is still on, showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon are pulling out all the stops. Theyve already tackled the Agent Coulson mystery, ramifications of Thor: The Dark World, theyll be dealing with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Stan Lee will be appearing soon. Now a surprising actor is joining the cast. Bill Paxton, best known for his work in Aliens, Twister and Big Love, has been cast as Agent John Garrett for a multi-episode arc.

TV Guide broke the news of Paxtons casting. He previously played a spy in James Camerons True Lies where his character admitted to having a little penis and peeing himself. God, I love that character.

Back to S.H.I.E.L.D., Whedon said the reason they added Garrett was We wanted to bring in a rough-and-tumble former cohort of Agent Coulson with a little bit of attitude and cigar-smoking swagger. They wouldnt comment on the exact role more than that, but did describe him as follows:

When Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesnt like the formalities of S.H.I.E.L.D. Hes going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two.

So will Paxton follow the comic book arc of becoming a cyborg? Anything is possible. Well find out in late February/early March when the Paxton episodes begin to air.

Got another supervillain introduction (Blizzard), albeit a small character, but nonetheless...

Skye has superpowers? And we still don't know her real name? I'm still thinking this will lead to a big reveal.

Speaking of big reveals, I'm all in on Coulson being Vision, and Peterson being Deathlok. What this means is that the show has the slow build to what Arrow has been doing all along with random characters popping up here and there. Will patience pay off? I'm still watching, and the last 2 episodes have shown this show is getting better, which is fine by me. It's depressing this hasn't been announced for a S2 just yet, but I see it coming. It's good enough to warrant more, and popular enough to warrant more too, but they better come to something even better to keep up.

TCA: Deathlok & Lorelei Characters Joining Marvels Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

By DOMINIC PATTEN | Thursday January 23, 2014 @ 4:42pm PST

The Marvel Comics character Deathlok will appear on ABCs Marvels Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. beginning next month, Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb said today during the shows TCA set visit presentation. The character Mike Peterson, played by J August Richards on the show, will become the cyborg. Weve been leaving breadcrumbs along the way, Loeb said. This is a major Marvel character appearing on TV, on film for the first time. Earlier in the presentation, Loeb showed footage of Bill Paxton on the series; he is joining for several episodes playing Agent John Garret. It was also confirmed that comic creator Stan Lee will appear in a cameo on the February 4 episode. Also coming aboard is the character of Lorelei (played by Elene Satine), a villain from Thors home of Asgard; footage was shown of her and Lady Sif (Jaime Alexander) facing off. Its epic adventure, the human spirit and humor, said Loeb of the Marvel DNA. Anything in our publishing, our feature films, our TV, comes from that.

While this was kinda obvious given what we've seen of Michael Peterson, it still is cool as hell. I had a feeling we'd be seeing some things like that, and still will.

Characterizations on the main cast gets better, there's comic characters that make appearances (Victoria Hand, Glacier, Deathlok), and hints of what/who Coulson and Skye are.

That episode finally showed the promise of the show. The fight scenes were excellent and it had the great Whedonesque balance of humor and gravitas. My favorite bit was Ward and Coulson trying to work the 3-D scanner.

that said, these latest eps have been really really good ...

for the record, i'm one who actually PREFERs a slow build in a story...i have never minded when shows let the environment and characters slowly develop over time....like i said, i actually PREFER that....AS LONG as i feel like there is a 'plan behind it all'...and, with Whedon behind it, i KNEW there would be an overarching plan....so i was never worried, concerned or bored....not saying the show was always 100% perfect or anything, but overall i was always 'in'...

for me, the characters of Coulson and Melinda have always been intriguing to me. Intriguing enough to keep me 'in' even in episodes that may not have 'seemed' to have a lot going on. And wjhen i say intrigued, i'm talking more than just 'what did they do to Coulson?' intriguing....i'm talking more about their psychological makeup, what drives them to do what they do, be who they are, react the way they react and why both on a professional and personal level...

and let's all agree....Robert Clark Gregg as Coulson is just plain awesome. He NAILs that character...i owns that character, he IS that character. And Coulson the character is 'the shit'. love him.

Ming Na as Melinda is also friggin awesome. SHE also nails that character, and i totally believe her. and its not just her bad-assedness that she nails, but i believe the 'depth' behind the stoic attitude that Melinda tries to give off...i think thats hard for an actor to do, and Ming Na is nailing it...and with sexy style too i must say....

so yeah, i'm 'in' ...

and yeah (SPOILER)...i am ALSO glad that they are starting to bleed in some of the semi obscure Marvel universe characters that so many of us hoped we'd be able to see come to life on screen....(characters who may not be 'Big Movie Franchise worthy' but who are still appreciated & loved on many levels by many of us who grew up on the comic books...

....so cheers, here's to a Season 2...

the coming few years have the potential to be one of the 'real life' fantasies of my adolescent self back in the 70s...Marvel universe coming to life and expanding on the screen....pretty damn cool if you ask me...

Another good episode, this one featured Bill Paxton as friend of Coulson/Ward, some further exploration into Coulson's recovery, and a sneak peak into another Marvel character they are bringing into the fold for next episode, Loralei (and Sif from Thor and Thor: The Dark World will be cameo-ing too).

This show isn't without its complaints (the family angle is pushed a bit too hard; and I wanted more Deathlok!), but it is still much better than what it used to be.

But the average person didn't get this far, and if I wasn't as tuned into OKP I don't even know if I would've dared to care this much.

The Sif tie in and is exactly what this world was created for, not to see Coulson two british kids and a sexy killa ass asian rep for 47 minutes.

The appeal to me with SHIELD was watching a government agency trying to operate in the new SUPERHEROES EXIST! world. I thought that could be very intriguing (Hell, I've written a spec pilot that is basically the same concept so I'm happy they didn't go that route.)

How does SHIELD try to win over people while also rein in superheroes and smaller supervillains in this post Battle of New York world? That was how a lot of the early ads portrayed the show but that concept has been all but lost from episode 1 and all we got was what basically amounted (in the episodes I watched) a procedural with lousy characters and cases that are solved with a simple hack. Throwing more cameos into the mix just adds more flash to a show that needs to focus on heart. (Although, speaking of flash, they need to also figure out how to make the show look better because, visually, it's mediocre at best.)

SHIELD could have really been topical as it is about a government agency trying to stay ahead of the curve but without threatening the freedoms of the people.

The best thing for the show might be if Captain America: The Winter Soldier kind of blows up SHIELD and Coulson and his crew become rogue agents ala the A-Team. Add a new layer to the show, get them off of the goddamned plane, and limit their resources so every case isn't solved by people waving their hands over a computer.

In response to Reply # 242

a corner unexplored by the big movies. The problem has been with the core group not being explored enough, not that the focus has been on them in general. Coulson was always a supporting character, now he has a little team to go with him to explore the smaller events. But the focus on them being a 'family' needs some exploration, b/c that is what is truly lacking.

I understand completely why people would have dropped out, and most of the reason I've stuck with it is my intrigue with Marvel's idea of a larger combined universe and bias for Marvel in general. The show has gotten better, depth has been added (a little at a time, but still), and characters, like Deathlok, Sif, Victoria Hand, Bill Paxton's SHIELD agent, are being introduced.

Someone in this universe, you said yourself you even wrote a spec for it. So you're already invested and care about how they play in this world.

MOST muthafuckas don't care about that, we just trynna see some super hero shit. Why does arrow work and this one doesn't? Because its focuses on dude, and the other well known and lesser known hero characters. The main group surrounding Coulson sucks and the fact that this is a light weight procedural makes it suck even more. All those damn computers and them annoying british kids do not make the show good. I understand what the ORIGINAL concept was, but no one was checking for that. Its just not that interesting. More Fury, More powers, more better.

Skye, the main dude (not coulson), brits, and shitty looking show with wonder computers is not good.

We may not agree and that's fine I'll just not watch.

I know basically nothing about The Green Arrow and his villains. When a guy in a mask pops up it does nothing for me because it's just a guy in a mask to me. (And the spec I wrote was my own original show with heroes I made up; it wasn't a spec of SHIELD) What makes Arrow good is that it has interesting characters with legitimate relationships and storylines.
As you noted, SHIELD's problem is that it's a bunch of bland characters flying around in a plane and working on computers. That's not a problem with the original concept; that's a problem with the execution. (Hell, even the few action scenes that I saw weren't even shot that well.)
I'm not sure that adding more Nick Fury and more powers is going to help because it'll just be Nick Fury on the plane and heroes using their powers in the last act to get the writers out of the corner they wrote themselves into.

The writing is bad, the action scenes generally don't work, other than maybe a few of Ming Na's jounts. There hasn't been a large enough investment into the team to warrant giving a good holy crap what happens to them.

the thing is though, if they're going to continue down this path of tepid ass writing then you've got to have a cape or mask to make that shit interesting.

every reference to "The Battle of New York" when it was SIX MOTHERFUCKERS against an entire army shows just how mortal they are. any one of the problems they face in SHIELD would be light handiwork for any of the top four Avengers. Seeing them struggle and not have any special powers or tools to work with gives more layers to these characters for when the next Avengers movie comes out. Coulson, Hill, Fury for sure, but perhaps some other agents will figure into the next big screen flick.

It will be interesting to see how they maintain some strand of continuity between Marvel movies and the show.

In response to Reply # 238

Following Tuesday's episode and the injection of whatever from what most are believing was a dead Kree (I keep reading people talking about it maybe being Atlantean leading to Namor, but Namor's rights aren't with Marvel proper, so I don't know why that keeps coming up) ... I've been looking around at fan theories on the net and here is a running list of guesses as to who Skye really is in the MCU....

- Jessica Drew/Spiderwoman
- Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel
- An Inhuman
- Tsu-Zana/Ultra Girl

I like the Ultra Girl hypothesis best. Let the film franchises handle the good characters, and let's use the TV show to load up on the D-list. Goddamn it, let's bring in Squirrel Girl.

Ms. Marvel will make the jump to the big screen at some point, JD seems the most logical choice, and a big !!!! moment for this show to hit fans with to draw them in a bit.

at least half Asgardian. they've been referencing Asgard a lot this season.

i'm not mad at the Inhuman idea either though it seems a bit much for the TV show. seems more like film material.
